never a reply.......2003-09-20
Am a successful full-time freelancer for past 14 years, selling illustrations consistently to Fortune 100 companies. Every year, I mail out at least 50 sample packages to various listings in this book, and in ten years, have NEVER received a paying job.
The occasional postcard acknowledging receipt perhaps, but that's about it. One sample package sent to a company in a neighboring state not listed in the book got me a year's worth of work. That place was discovered by me on my own with no help from them. I suppose you could infer that maybe it's me or my approach or sample package. Yet, time and again, the exact same cover letter and materials sent to places I've discovered by myself have yielded work. I think the companies listed here, with the possible exception of the magazines paying $15 for a gag cartoon, aren't really in the market for work or if they are, it's very rare. I mean, $200 spent sending work to every greeting card company that was applicable to my work and not a SINGLE postcard or reply?! I once sent a sample package to a publisher, received a "no thanks" letter from them and then ONE week later, my agent called with work from the same publisher. This leads me to believe that they pay no attention to submissions that have originated by people reading this book. Again, efforts on my own have had much better results. If others have found this book useful, good luck to them, but anyone looking to make more than $20 an illustration, don't bother. Spend the money on phone calls and postage.
Must Have for Artists.......2003-07-11
If you want to get your work out there to be published, this is the book for you. It is a must have for any kind of artist. I was amazed to find all the listings they offer in here. Each listing is detailed into type of work, contact info, and the book is indexed real well. It is categorized and also you can look people up by their name as well. Another great feature of this book is there is a glossary in the back if you are unfamiliar with any terms used in it. This book will be so valuable to me. If you are serious about getting published but you don't know where to even start, get this book. Very important tool.
2003 Artist's & Graphic Designer's Market.......2003-04-11
Perfect transaction. Prompt secure shipping. Would definitely buy from again.
THE ONLY RESOURCE.......2003-03-28
If you're looking to market your illustration or design work, particularly, this book is the ultimate resource. I've been buying it for years and have to say it is always up-to-date and a real time saver for me. I don't think I could remain in today's competitive freelance market if I didn't have the help of a book like this doing the lion's share of the market research for me. BRAVO, again, to Mary Cox, editor, for another fine edition of this invaluable resource.
I never miss an issue.......2003-03-12
An invaluable resource for any artist who wants to be a part of the current marketplace, this book is also good for fine artists, to increase their income and gain visibility.
Aside from the thousands of listings, there are many articles, as well as interviews with people who have gained success in their field, that are informative and useful. I especially appreciate "Crash Course in Copyright", which simplifies a complex subject, and makes it understandable; it is a must to read before signing any contract.
Everyone will have favorite chapters that apply to their specific talents; I have 3 which are heavily underlined and often read.
The listings, or "Markets" are:
1. Greeting Cards, Gifts & Products
2. Magazines
3. Posters & Prints
4. Book Publishers
5. Galleries
6. Syndicates & Cartoon Features
7. Stock Illustration & Clip Art Firms
8. Advertising, Design & Related Markets
9. Record Labels
There are also listings of Artist's Reps, Web sites, and a glossary of art-related terms.
Many listings have web site addresses, which enable one to see if the "look" the company projects is a right match for your style, before mailing samples; also the contact person, and what type of work they are looking for, method and range of payment, and much more.
This is a book I buy yearly, as every issue has new listings, updates, and deletions, and I consider it a worthy investment.
One of the listings in the "Book Publishers" section is Artist's & Graphic Designer's Market: When you have collected enough freelance work from companies in the listings in this book, send them the printed pages, photographs or tear sheets, and your work might get selected as one of the numerous illustrations that are used as examples in the book.

Book Description
In this toe-tapping jazz tribute, the traditional "This Old Man" gets a swinging makeover, and some of the era's best musicians take center stage. The tuneful text and vibrant illustrations bop, slide, and shimmy across the page as Satchmo plays one, Bojangles plays two . . . right on down the line to Charles Mingus, who plays nine, plucking strings that sound "divine."
Easy on the ear and the eye, this playful introduction to nine jazz giants will teach children to count--and will give them every reason to get up and dance!
Includes a brief biography of each musician.

Excellent Just Needs A Musical CD !!!!.......2007-04-23
I love this book! My son is 20 months and loves this book the rhythm of the words, the numbers, the clapping the sounds of the instruments. What would be excellent if there was an auditory accompaniment to the book. A taping of someone reading the book who can demonstrate the sounds or even better a taping that included musical instruments playing.
I know a lot of people would LOVE to hear it as well and it would be an excellent teaching tool. Please forward this to the appropriate individuals and if possible keep me updated on the release date of the cd. Thank YOU for writing such an awesome, entertaining and needed book!
Encore! We want more!.......2007-03-22
Oooh, this book made me what to rap and tap and beedle-di-bop! Which is quite somethin', since I don't have a musical bone in my body!
This is a great book-the text jives off the page and the illustrations thimp dumple thump right along. What a great way to teach kids about jazz legends!
Hats off to Ehrdhardt and Roth for a beautiful book!
Encore!
A great read aloud for kids!.......2007-03-07
I am an elementary school media specialist for grades 1 - 5. I read this book to my first and second graders. By the third jazz man they were chanting along with me. By the fifth man we were all singing along with the familiar song tune. They loved the scat phrases and repeated them over and over. What a bonus that these men are actual jazz legends. I highly recommend this book for a great musical read.
Jude's Review of Jazz Man.......2007-01-21
I'm 3 and my Grandmother Helene reads this book to me. She said that my Doctor Beth gave it to me and my sister Scarlett and the author signed it. That made me smile.
I really like this book. My grandmother sings me it and i like music and instruments and can name the saxophone and trumpet and drums.I like the pictures of the conga drums.
I usually say, " read it again" when she's done and I can almost pick out all the numbers now too. Jude Stulb, Pueblo Colorado
This Great Book! (More and More Honors!) .......2006-10-05
Note: Since writing the review below, I've discovered that "This Jazz Man" has received three (and counting) prestigious honors in the last month or so: A Nick Jr. Book of the Year for Children, one of the N.Y. Public Libraries Top 100 books to Read to Kids, and one of a very few named by National Public Radio as a best children's book of the year!
February 2007 Update: This Jazz Man is on the cover of the February "Crickets" magazine! In addition, it was shortlisted as a top book by the Cooperative Children's Book Center, and is being used as a teaching tool for a Smithsonian Museum (yes, that Smithsonian!) exhibit.
If you've bought this book, you and I share a certain nose for kids' books; if you haven't, you'll discover a book that's snappy and swinging, fun and informative. My original review follows.
"Doodly-doodly-Doot-doot! Toot-Toot!"
That's Karen Ehrhardt's delightful take on a Dizzy Gillespie trumpet line, and like the rest of this sparkling first book, every note rings joyous and true. In a somewhat daring move, Ms. Ehrhardt airs out the musty English poem, "This Old Man," with jazz-infused lyrics, and distills the essence of nine jazz giants: Louis Armstrong, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, Chano Pozo, Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, Art Blakey, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Charles Mingus.
The improvisations in "This Jazz Man" are authentic and fun--the text is made for reading out loud! Listen to this evocation of Charlie Parker, for example:
This jazz man, he plays five,
He plays bebop, he plays jive,
With a Deedle-di-bop! Bebop!
Give the man a hand,
This jazz man blows with the band.
Within the 5-line format of the original song, the author conveys the sound and spirit of these artists, while keeping the tone light and understandable for her young, perhaps jazz-naive audience (about 3 to 7 years-old). Along with each Jazz Man's stanza are the sounds and rhythms of his performance -- depicted in text incorporated with each illustration. When drummer Art Blakey "plays solos with his sticks" and "beats with the band," the percussive sounds "Chikka-chee! Chikka-chee! Bubbuda-bubbuda-bubbuda-BOMP!" pulse over his vibrating cymbals. Following the `performance,' older readers (and adults) can learn more about Blakey -- his innovation of the "press roll" and his role in nurturing new talent -- in the book's afterward. Riffing on the customary introductions of band members at jazz gigs ("Playing 4, form Washington, D.C... Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington"), the book briefly spotlights the life of each Jazz Man.
Illustrator R. G. Roth complements Ehrhardt's narrative pictures with multi-media illustrations that are playfully retro yet fresh and child-friendly. Airy compositions help children see the relaxed, expansive pose of the smiling Louis Armstrong, the verve and rhythmic creativity of "Chano" Pozo (how many times have you seen him in a jazz book for kids?), the playful attack of Fats Waller, and the stature and majesty of Charles Mingus. Roth displays a repertoire of textures and soft, engaging colors, and makes subtle references to Birdland, the Newport Jazz Festival, and other venues along the edges of book's `stage. For the small fry, a cute and playfully elusive mouse plays hide and seek throughout the book. "This Jazz Man" has an exhilarating finale -- after each man plays (1 through 9), all of the jazz icons appear on stage together:
This jazz band, they play ten,
We beg them to play again,
With an "Encore, we want more!"
Give them all a hand"
These jazz men make one great band!
"This Jazz Man" gets it right, rhymes it tight, and entertains without misrepresenting. (To put this achievement in context, too many kids' "jazz" books really focus on the blues--usually the rural blues, seen through an awkward sentimentalism--or solely on dance. Sometimes they confuse eras, portraying any jazz singer as a combination of Bessie Smith, post-WWII hep cats, and 1950's beats, with a dash of oddly misplaced 1970's styles.)
"This Jazz Man" is a natural for school or library audiences, rambunctious group singing, the first efforts of beginning readers, or as a bedtime treat for toddlers. One doesn't need to know one lick about jazz to enjoy the musicality of the rhymes and the understated but compelling jazz portraits: They stand on their own. In addition, teachers can easily adapt "This Jazz Man" to language units, numbers and counting, music appreciation, art, solo and group singing. Older students may delve further into the lives and times of the musicians through Ehrhardt's rich yet compact biographical sketches in the afterward. (Offhand, I can't think of any book--for kids or adults--that so succinctly and eloquently describes each musician's significance.) For readers who'd like to sample the actual music, Ehrhardt recommends recorded works for each Jazz Man: a couple tracks for each musician, and even two feature films (available on video) that display Bojangles' tapping talents. (Perhaps in future editions of this book, the publishers could include a companion CD/DVD.)
With apologies to the author--though inspired by her:
This jazz fan, I count one,
"This Jazz Man" is lots of fun!
With a smile and a nod and an "ain't that grand!"
Let's give Ehrhardt a great big hand!

Customer Reviews:
I have to agree with all the other reviews of the Stride Pianist here.......2007-01-02
The book is complex but worth the labor. You'll sure be figuring out the fingering if you have small hands that can't reach a tenth like myself. This book is stride jazz piano at heart. Posnak did us a great deed and favor bringing back Fats through written sheet music to us. I highly recommend this book if you want to learn Harlem Stride Hot Piano. It is going to take a great learning curb to learn these TIMELESS SOLOS!
Very, Very Difficult. But Good........2005-05-21
This is truly a must-have for any stride pianist. The transcriptions are meticulously detailed. If you want to sound like Fats himself, buy this book. The downfall, though, is that it is incredibly difficult. If you can play these transcriptions like Fats did, you're a freak!
Great book!.......2003-12-14
Posnak has faithfully transcribed Fats exactly as originally played by going through a painstaking listening and transcribing process. You too can sound like Fats if you can manage to play these tunes up to tempo. The harmonies are rich, the stretches in the left hand are wide, and the tempos are not for the faint of heart. But you can always play them a little slower and still sound great. This book is like having an old player piano roll of a great artist. If you want to learn stride style, this is the book to have.
Take it all in stride...piano, that is..........2001-04-23
If you are at all familiar with Fats Waller, you undoubtably have been in awe of his work. His keyboard mastery, his compositions, his "tickling tricks"...all combined with his irrepressable humor made him the genius of his time. And deservably so.Noone could touch his ability on the keys. This book, beautifuuly put together, gives you the music of Fats. My hat is off to Posnak. I have no idea how he was able to transcribe some of this material, as some of it is quite complex in harmonies and rhythms. Posnak himself must be a thrill to hear. The world of stride piano fanciers and admirers owes him a world of thanks for this labor of love. Here you will find one of Fats' signature pieces- "Handful of Keys". Folks, this is not for the faint of heart, as the chords are full and rich, and the "tricks" are numerous. I only wish that he had also included James Johnson"s "Carolina Shout", as Fats also had a winner with his interpretaion of that one, written by his teacher. "Ain't Misbehavin'" is great, and sounds just like the recording that Posnak transcribed it from. If you know this piece and are able to play it already, do yourself a favor and augment your rendition with some if not all of this version. I have already gleaned much from it, and indeed, play this version in it's written form, as you would have a hard time improving upon it without muddying it. "The Viper's Drag" and "Keeping Out of Mischief Now" are, once again, so faithfully brought back to life that it is eerie. It is as if Fats himself is sitting there just GIVING this material to you, as Posnak delivers the true sounds and life of the pieces. If you have guessed that I think the world of this book, you got it! If you love stride piano, or for that matter, just damn good piano, and have the patience to sit and work on the material, you will have treasures in your hands. But I will warn you just a bit- the material isn't for the beginner or even novice; this IS going to take some experience, reading ability and comprehension. Most of us will have to spend some time working out the fingerings and rhythms. as a learning aid, try purchasing several good Fats Waller tapes or CDs that have these pieces on them.Knowing how they are supposed to sound can be of benefit. Just try not to compare your ability with Fats.. we are all not worthy!!! So turn on your piano lamp, get a cold glass of tea (or your favorite adult beverage....Fats would be proud), and work at it. It is surely worth it.
A Giant "Stride" Forward For Musicians!.......1999-01-28
Simply put - this book is a monumental endeavor and no less of a tribute to "Fats". After long hours on end trying to pick out these fabulous solos myself with my all-too-imperfect musical ear, this work is a dream come true. If only more musicians of this calibre would pick up the torch as well and transcribe other solos for "Fats" (unfortunately, his marvelous rendition of "Tea for Two" is not included here), as well as other pianists (Art Tatum, for one)! The accuracy in transcription here is astonishing. Two copies are recommended, because you will be wearing the first copy out in no time!

Customer Reviews:
A superb portrait of Fats Waller.......2007-08-06
In 1969, for me, modern jazz had hit a dead end. The same riffs, the same key changes. Four soloists in search of an ensemble. To paraphrase Hemingway, the musicians were having all the fun and the audience none.
The critics had come to rule the roost and acted like political commissars on what was correct and proper jazz. Who influenced whom? Who was selling out? It had become boring and tiresome, and I was not alone in this feeling or rather I was alone...alone or nearly alone when I went to hear live jazz. It was over.
When visiting a cousin, I happened to hear an RCA Victor Vintage LP of Fats Waller (produced by Mike Lipskin who wrote the forward to this biography.) The first cut was "Got a Bran' New Suit." I laughed until I cried at first from nervousness at the corniness of the song but gradually from the pure joy of the record. It had a short but wonderful piano solo, he sang and clowned with the lyric, and then the band played a few ensemble riffs and a couple of short solos. In 3 short minutes, that music had sounded more alive to me than anything I'd heard in a long time. Later, I discovered that "Bran New Suit" was hardly Fats Waller's best work. It was nevertheless like a revelation.
I was most struck as I listened to the rest of the cuts on the album by the piano solos. Waller played piano with both hands and used the whole piano. He played with a great touch and technical proficiency. His brief piano solos said more in 30 seconds than I had heard in years of listening to music. It opened the door to all the older music that I've come to enjoy for many years.
I was not predisposed to reading books about jazz. Too often they were filled with score settling that came out of the old bebop wars. So, I missed this book by Fats Waller's son much to my regret now.
Fats Waller the biography is fine portrait of a very gifted, but very human celebrity. He overcame many obstacles with sheer talent but also created many of his own. There is also a lot of insight into how Harlem became Harlem and the story of the music world in the 1920's. It also tells some of the story of James P. Johnson and his important contributions to the music of the first half of the 20th Century, not the least of which was his mentoring of Fats Waller.
The book also answered one question I had about Waller's piano playing. Occasionally, he would play a few bars of boogie bass piano. While it was technically proficient, it sounded false, phony. Why, I wondered? According to his son, he hated it. He even had contracts written so that he didn't have to play it. Now it makes sense.
Fats Waller was a giant of American music and is today the most underrated piano player in jazz. Yes, that's right, the most underrated.
First Rate, Fantastic, BUY THIS BOOK!.......2001-04-13
I just finished reading this wonderful book a few hours ago. The book is so well written, so full of honesty and family anecdotes, it make me feel almost as if I were a member of the Waller family. Maurice Waller (Fats' son) has written a classic, seminal book about the greatest pianist/singer/comedian/actor/composer of the twentieth century. I place Fats' untimely death at age 39 in the same category in terms of the tragedy and loss to the world of music, as the tragic death of George Gershwin in his 30's. (Gershwin and Fats were good friends, by the way. It was Gershwin who suggested to Fats that he study counterpoint and harmony with Godowsky). There are so many good things to say about this book that I wouldn't have room to list them all. Maurice Waller, born in 1927, should in my opinion win a Pulitzer prize for this book. I have already begun ordering CD's ...in order to better appreciate this great man's musical output. Fats was taken under J.P. Johnson's wing when Fats was 16 and J.P. Johnson was 26. Fats himself personally taught Count Basie how to play the organ. Fats was a truly wonderful human being. Over 10,000 people came to his funeral in Harlem when died in 1943. Thank you, Maurice Waller, for writing this monumental book about a monumental man.
I most highly recommend this book!.......1998-06-19
I love Fats Waller, which is why I wanted to read this biography by his son, Maurice Waller. I had high hopes and expectations, and I was not in the least bit disappointed! This is a great book! The biography is filled with Maurice Waller's fascinating anecdotes, one of the most notable being the one about how Fats was kidnapped by Al Capone's men. I was also intrigued by the ways in which Fats acquired his musical education, and with the accounts of how he composed his music. The authors also bring to life the context in which Fats Waller lived and worked: the rich culture of Harlem, the way in which the jazz greats nurtured each other and promising young musicians such as Fats, how they created their music, and how Fats and the others dealt with racism in the performing world. It also provides a fascinating look at the young recording industry. The book includes several appendices of Fats Waller's recordings and compositions. This book is short, fast-moving and easy to read, and absolutely packed with information. It enhanced my appreciation and understanding of the great Fats Waller and his work. Anyone who loves jazz should read this book!
