        5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2000-06-01

This series is amazing, and never leaves you at a loss for whatwill happen next, but the suspense is overwhelming! Tag and Walkertogether make the strongest pair of friends I have ever seen in a novel. Their lives span centuries and their stories capture you! I strongly recommend this book, and the others in the Walker of Time series, to enjoy over and over again as I have!

4 out of 5 stars Action sequel beats the original........2000-04-02

This sequel easily got 4 stars. In the beginning Tag the main character travels through timefrom 1250 to a lot of different times. All through that time he protected the canyon he lived in with his best friend from grave robbers. In the end he finds his dad and the canyon is protected. I thought that the author characterizied Tag and the people he met well. It is very suspenseful and made me read on. This is a very good book to read if you like the Indian culture or action books.

                  Book Description

The tools of design research, writes Brenda Laurel, will allow designers "to claim and direct the power of their profession." Often neglected in the various curricula of design schools, the new models of design research described in this book help designers to investigate people, form, and process in ways that can make their work more potent and more delightful. "At the very least," Peter Lunenfeld writes in the preface, "design research saves us from reinventing the wheel. At its best, a lively research methodology can reinvigorate the passion that so often fades after designers join the profession."

The goal of the book is to introduce designers to the many research tools that can be used to inform design as well as to ideas about how and when to deploy them effectively. The chapter authors come from diverse institutions and enterprises, including Stanford University, MIT, Intel, Maxis, Studio Anybody, Sweden?s HUMlab, and Big Blue Dot. Each has something to say about how designers make themselves better at what they do through research, and illustrates it with real world examples--case studies, anecdotes, and images. Topics of this multi-voice conversation include qualitative and quantitative methods, performance ethnography and design improvisation, trend research, cultural diversity, formal and structural research practice, tactical discussions of design research process, and case studies drawn from areas as unique as computer games, museum information systems, and movies. Interspersed throughout the book are one-page "demos," snapshots of the design research experience. Design Research charts the paths from research methods to research findings to design principles to design results and demonstrates the transformation of theory into a richly satisfying and more reliably successful practice.

                  4 out of 5 stars Primer.......2007-10-13

A primer for all designers - this book contains many useful case studies that underpin the quintessential need for research before beginning any design process.

                  1 out of 5 stars Choking hazard.......2007-10-02

I enjoy some of her earlier work but this one is misleading, in particular for those wishing to study (methods of) design research. Laurel neither relates nor contributes to the discipline of design research in this book in a direct way. Design postgraduates looking for a good book on design research are better advised looking at Design Research by Peter Downton, which is more difficult to get but worth it and newer.

5 out of 5 stars A must for design thinkers!.......2007-02-07

This book is an excellent, comprehensive collection of design-related essays and research studies. It is inspirational and practical (and doesn't hurt that it is well designed)!

5 out of 5 stars Diverse and Inspirational.......2005-12-28

Brenda's collection is still the most comprehensive collection of diverse design research methods I can find. I use her book to inspire, intrigue, and sometimes perplex students, exposing them to lots of new ideas. I use the book in combination with Kuniavsky's more practical how-to information in Observing the User Experience. He provides too much detail and not enough high concept. The combination ends up working very well.

If I could choose only a single text, I would choose Brenda's design research book. I can fill in specifics about different techniques drawn from many books and web sites, but the creativity of methods and the clear belief in the power of design research conveyed in the book needs to come from real world writers, not just from the professor claiming it is so. Her book makes the case!

                  4 out of 5 stars A great browse.......2005-02-08

The varied opinions among the existing reviews suggests this is somehow a strange subject area. I can only report on my own response, and I think this is a cool book. Before thumbing through to the preface you'll encounter a neat symbol of good design - a two page spread of the what's in the book. A true "table of contents," whose rows represent various aspect of design research, and whose columns are the book chapters. Each table cell is marked if that chapter pertains to that aspect. Pleasing to the eye and enormously useful, especially if you wish to use this as a text or part of some focused study.

Many chapters are authored by one or more designers who reflect on their own approach and experience in design. I found this to be a rich source of material for thinking about ways to create new things. I would think that nearly anyone whose job requires creative output will find here some interesting and useful tools to add to their collection.

Psychological research has veered away from qualitative design, often because the methodologies have been misunderstood. Dr. Camic and his colleagues offer us a great deal in this book. Chapters talk about both attitude and strategies. Some are familiar methods, others are newer. It is an essential book for students and researchers, and I hope it will bring more psychologists back to qualitative work.

                    Book Description

Computer technology has revolutionized many aspects of building design, such as drafting, management, construction - even building with robots. This revolution has expanded into the field of design creativity. Presented in this book is an up-to-date, comprehensive picture of research advances in the fast-growing field of informatics applied to conceptual stages in the generation of artifacts - in particular, buildings. It addresses the question how far and in what ways creative design can be intelligently automated.

Among the topics covered are: the use of precedents; the relations between case-based, rule-based, and principle-based architectural design reasoning; product typology; artifact thesauruses; the inputting and retrieval of architectural knowledge; the visual representation and understanding of existing or projected built forms; empirical and analytical models of the design process and the design product; desktop design toolkits; grammars of shape and of function; multiple-perspective building data structures; design as a multi-agent collaborative process; the integration of heterogeneous engineering information; and foundations for a systematic approach to the development of knowledge-based design systems.

The papers provide a link between basic and practical issues: - fundamental questions in the theory of artifact design, artifical intelligence, and the cognitive science of imagination and reasoning; - problems in the computerization of building data and design facilities; - the practical tasks of building conception, construction and evaluation. The automation of creative design is itself considered as an engineering design problem.

The implications of current and future work for architectural education and research in architectural history, as well as for computer-integrated construction and the management of engineering projects are considered.

                    Book Description

Rather than presenting each experimental design in terms of a set of computational formulas to be used only for that design, the authors use a model comparison approach to present a few basic formulas that can be applied with the same underlying logic to every experimental design.

                    5 out of 5 stars Second Edition.......2006-06-18

This edition is similar to the previous one. It is without peer in terms of scholarship. It is also not easy to read and digest, and that's the way it should be for a serious treatment of research methods. After all, the applications of such methods and the interpretation of results can profoundly affect our lives.

                    3 out of 5 stars A good book but a terrible textbook.......1999-09-15

Without any doubt, this is a comprehensive book in this field. However, because the authors tried to demonstrate their superior english writting abilities, they made the whole text hard to understand for students. From my point of view, as a new professor, I don't believe that recommending this book is appropriate.

                    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous book.......1999-06-11

This is a practitioner's book, not a scolar's. I'm not a scolar -- never have been and never will be. I love this book. It's lucid, it's sensible and it's great statistics. It goes thoroughly into the logic of linear model ANOVAs yet the bulk of the exposition is in the simple English language -- it has no calculus and no eigenvectors and almost no matrix algebra. You need an acquaintance with elementary one-way ANOVA but no more background than that. The authors pace it carefully and are not afraid of a bit of repetition for the sake of clarity (something I always appreciate when I'm reading new technical material). It's one of the best $105 dollars I've ever spent. I got loads out of it all the way through and it's a big book. The explanation of multivariate repeated measures is worth the price alone.

5 out of 5 stars This is a scholarly presentation of a difficult subject........1999-04-30

I continue to select this text for a graduate course in advanced experimental design. The book is not easy, and that is one reason why I like it. It presents a thoughtful scholarship on controversial issues pertaining to the use of inferential statistics as a tool to assist the researcher in making decisions about the validity and strength of functional relationships present in the data. The book eliminates the naive overconfidence that sometimes results from cookbook applications of algorithms to the results of experiments. It shows that the process of discovery and data analysis is never complete and that the general linear model is an imperfect technique by which to discern orderliness in nature where intersubject variability is a given.

                      Book Description

One outcome of recent progress in educational technology is strong interest in providing effective support for learning in complex and ill-structured domains. We know how to use technology to promote understanding in simpler domains (e.g., orientation information, procedures with minimal-branching, etc.), but we are less sure how to use technology to support understanding in more complex domains (e.g., managing limited resources, understanding environmental impacts, etc.). Such domains are increasingly significant for society. Technology (e.g., collaborative tele-learning, digital repositories, interactive simulations, etc.) can provide conceptually and functionally rich domains for learning. However, this introduces the problem of determining what works in which circumstances and why. Research and development on these matters is reflected in this collection of papers. This research suggests a need to rethink foundational issues in educational philosophy and learning technology. One major theme connecting these papers is the need to address learning in the large - from a more holistic perspective. A second theme concerns the need to take learners where and as they are, integrating technology into effective learning places. Significant and systematic progress in learning support for complex domains demands further attention to these important issues.
