Book Description
Us and Them illuminates the dark corners of our nation's past and traces our ongoing efforts to live up to the American ideals of equality and justice. Fourteen case studies--enhanced through the use of original documents, historical photos, newly commissioned paintings, and dramatic narrative--bring readers a first-hand account of the history and psychology of intolerance. We read about Mary Dyer, executed for her Quaker faith in Boston in 1660. We learn how the Mormons were expelled from Missouri in 1838. The attack on Chinese miners in Wyoming in 1885, the battle of Wounded Knee in 1890, the Ku Klux Klan activities in Mobile, Alabama in 1981, and the Crown Heights riot in 1991 are among the memorable episodes presented in clear, evocative language that brings to life history that is often forgotten or slighted.

Now is the Time to Revisit the Past.......2007-07-04
Jim Carnes explores the other side of American history. In his book, US AND THEM: A HISTORY OF INTOLERANCE IN AMERICA, Carnes introduces readers to issues in US history that are briefly expressed in textbooks. However, this book has a textbook format, but it is informative and insightful when examining the history of the United States in terms of religious, racial, and social intolerance. Although the book may be geared towards social studies and history classes, grades 5-12, or libraries, it is an effective learning tool towards setting the stage to discuss intolerance that has occurred within American history.
US AND THEM covers the most pivotal events in American history that have had a drastic affect on its people and communities. Carnes shows a birds-eye view of societal indifferences and injustices that occurred in the seventeenth, nineteenth, and twentieth century. Each of the chapters in the book are succinct and detailed, however, they leave the reader with a better perspective of events, such as the Salem Witch Trials, the debacle between Protestants and Catholics in Philadelphia in 1844, the Ghost Dance at Wounded Knee, and several other events that happened in the 1980s and 1990s pertaining to ethnic and gender issues.
The narrative and first person accounts situated within the side margins of the pages are helpful in providing the historical background of each particular event. Two essential sections, "At issue" and "The context" synthesize the facts between the myths, and the graphic illustrations within the text may invoke strong emotions and open the doors for discussion and critical analysis; undoubtedly, questions will arise on why issues such as gender, race and religion were problematic issues in history and continue to be today.
Indeed, Carnes and the preface by the late Chief Justice Harry A. Blackmun acknowledge the importance of the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution and the relevance these documents have toward excluding intolerance and ignorance within society during critical periods, times of war or economic hardships. This book reiterates the importance and the understanding of laws and rights, and should be recommended reading for all ages, especially when judgments of the past are being reinterpreted and transformed.
Racists hate this stuff. .......2005-08-24
I would like to start by saying that c. page is correct in saying that this is nothing new, and niether was the ignorance in his/her review. There are hardley any new 'isms' in the world, but there are people (usually younger students) who have been brainwashed into believing that racism is something that is gone in our greater American utopia. Not so, and for those students, this book is a great way to balance out the racist ommision of textbook bias.
Regurgitated Self-loathing Diatribe .......2005-07-13
This book was a disappointment not only in its poor writing style, but all in the fact that it does not break any new ground. It is little more than a string of regurgitated self-loathing diatribes written to target an already pre-defined and well-established group of readers who scoop books up like this so that they can cite secondary sources to justify their world view. Rather than taking a balanced approach with each of the topics they addressed, these authors rush to a conclusion unsubstantiated either in fact or analysis and little true "discovery" is ever made.
I have much more respect for authors who seek to do some spade work in uncovering a new point of view, balanced and justified with deductive reasoning, not recitations of pre-packaged pabulum already in circulation in dog eared white papers written by disenfranchised college professors.
Fortunately, I bought this book used and my personal loss, other than the time I spent reading it, was minimized.

The Face of Prejudice.......2001-07-31
In an age of sanitized history and calls for revisionism that make people feel comfortable, there is a great need for more books like Jim Carnes' history of intolerance in America. With 128 pages of text and 16 concise chapters this book corrects much of the white washing that is taking place in much longer history texts, even at the college level. Religious liberty, Native American exile, freedom from slavery, racial extermination, and ethnic tensions are highlighted with graphic images and easily accessible narratives. The trials of diverse groups such as Mormons, Catholics, Chinese, Native Americans, Jewish immigrants, Mexican Americans, Japanese citizens, and just playing Americans are dramatically highlighted in an unforgettable montage of images and words that give the lie to the "melting pot" that is the United States.
Paintings, etchings, drawings, and photographs illustrate in no uncertain terms would hate has done to this country. More than that the pictures combined with the simple prose personalizes each inequity that is introduced. For example, "A Rose for Charlie" presents photographs of the community disrupted by hate, as well as that community's response to the hate. From photographs of hate speech scrawled on walls to portraits of citizens mourning the victim of a deadly hate crime present a view of America that could not be farther from the Norman Rockwell ideal we all wish this country would be. For those interested, a fictionalized account of this particular crime can be found in "The Drowning of Stephan Jones" by Bette Greene, which chronicles the death of the young man simply because of who he loved.
It should be an essential book for all classrooms.
An important book for educators.......2001-01-17
I used this book in both my 6th and 8th grade classrooms with great success. I embarked on a diversity project using it and the video (which I strongly recommend); it's an excellent starting point because its scope is so wide and yet it gives very detailed accounts of intolerance in America, starting from the beginning (you see, we have a rather long history of intolerance). Middle school students find it interesting and easy to understand, and it's perfect for the teacher because it covers many ethnic and racial groups in the U.S.. Use this book! It's very important.

Real nice refrence book.......2006-01-27
This is a pretty decent refrence book to penning and like all How to draw manga books they also show you some basic drawing ( i dont understand why they do this since they already have a MHTDM volume for it ). What I loved about THIS MHTDM volume was the drawing style as well as the angles, UNLIKE the first volume the art style is more current and not 80s feel like the first one. Provides info on what type of pens and pencils should be used when penning as well as shading info.
fantabulous - not just for inking!.......2005-06-17
this book is just as excellent as the reviewer before me stated. however, there are also some other reasons to get this book. even though i plan to CG my sketches, i bought this books anyways. why, you ask? is has a surprisingly large selection of different body and head poses, especially downward and upward angles (which i find difficult). and many of the techniques shown can easily be adapted to digital inking as well (i.e. modulating lines, tapering, etc.) by all means, give this book serious consideration.
Much better than I expected.......2004-12-05
I've been drawing for about 15 years, 10 of them SERIOUSLY, I mean, with REAL dedication and study. 9 years ago, I discovered my love manga-style, and wanted to learn more. And every time I got stuck on the same point: I don't know how to ink. I have about seven books of the HTDM series now, and when I found out this one, I wanted to take the risk of ordering something that has no review. And I found the following:
-Yes, IT DOES TEACH YOU HOW TO INK, with description and examples of materials, techniques and all the stuff.
-It gives you good advice on texturing and shading, even to express the character's personality through inking. And to make your drawings look professional.
-It covers a lot of manga related subjects, from the inking point of view, like the use of special "codes" (sweat drops, X's and the kind).
Yup, it's not for the rookie artist, but you just need to know this: if you already do a good work with pencils, now you won't ruin it anymore on the ink process.
Summing up: buy it. You wont regret it (well, unless you're a skilled inker, and even then you might get some usefull advice).

Never a DULL moment.......2002-03-18
In the spirit of MADD, you KNOW the editors will never let you down.
The Laughs are enless, the satire is diehard and the art is truly amazing
FOR MADD FANS ONLY>>>>
I'm a huge MAD fan, but this book is disappointing!.......2001-07-06
I consider myself one of the biggest MAD fans in the world, but this book is a bit lame to the high standards of MAD. Maybe I just can't relate to all the movies because I'm not a big fan of the movie spoofs. Tha reason the book got two stars was merely because of the comics about movies in general, and a few good jokes by the likes of Dick DeBartolo and other great MAD writers.
Isn't It Ironic?.......1999-12-09
The satires are tremendous. The artwork and dialog are right on.as they once said. I only regret that the editors (both are MAD blue pencil people) and Time-Warner's marketing/merchandising machine took advantage of this material to promote themselves and their 75th anniversary (who cares?). I'll bet that they didn't spend a lot of money on this particular promotion, since MAD is owned by these mega-moguls. No, Time-Warner guys are mega-moguls. Meglin is simply a mega-Meglin and Ficcarra is, well, misspelled.
Cool magazine, cool book!.......1999-07-19
I love Mad magazine and I love all movies, so this book was the BEST thing that combines the two!

Another lacking Uncanny X-Men entry from Chuck Austen.......2004-09-21
With Grant Morrison's prolific run on New X-Men nothing more than a memory, this TPB takes place after the cataclysmic events in his Planet X and Here Comes Tomorrow arcs (both books you're better off picking up than this). With Magneto dead (yeah right), New York City in ruins, and the mansion in shambles; the X-Men re-group to pick up the pieces. Bright New Mourning manages to bridge the gap between the events of the aforementioned stories and Marvel's recent X-Men:ReLoad event, but the book is hurt badly by some atrocious dialogue and weak storytelling, courtesy of longtime, and long criticized, Uncanny X-Men scribe Chuck Austen. It's only saving grace is the art of Salvador Larroca, which was also the only saving grace of the previous Uncanny X-Men arc, She Lies With Angels. It's worth checking out if you missed these issues, but other than that this is best left on the shelf.
good but confusing entry.......2004-08-22
After She Flies with Angels broke up the continuity of this series this entry seems confusing. I also hate the fact that I'm going to have to hunt down the destruction of NY and the death of Magneto to truly understand this entry. That said the storyline and art are extremely solid in this collection. good to round out the collection.

Book Description
When tourists become lost, overwhelmed, tired, inspired, bored, enlightened, confronted, hungry, upset or tipsy, when they get cheated or fall in love, perceptions change and surprising associations and experiences come to light. In trying to figure out a city, they are mostly investigating themselves. In this madcap tour through five important international cities, Martin Lorenz and one guest artist per city gave themselves 48 hours to experience their destination, to document it and create a visual diary without the use of computers. The resulting evidence reveals places and situations that could never get mentioned in the guidebooks, offering exhibitionistic glimpses into the personal lives of the reporters and the real energy of each city. This volume covers Frankfurt, Copenhagen, Berlin and New York.

Intended for the first time owner of a digital camera........2004-03-20
This is the perfect book for the first time owner of a digital camera. The author explains basic terminology and how pixels and resolution effect the photographs, and guides the reader through how to transfer, edit, process and archive the photos.
It is not a guide on how to take photos, nor is it highly technical. It is designed for the first time user answering many of the questions and easing the confusion felt when entering the digital world. I am buying it for my sister-in-law and my 75 year old father, who both recently purchased cameras and are struggling with the understanding what resolution to use, how to print the photos, etc.
I wish I had this book years ago when I purchased my first digital camera.
A Book for Author's Friends Only.......2004-01-16
I'm afraid I for one cannot figure out the purpose of this book. It reads like something the writer should have simply photocopied and passed out among her friends. It is neither a very knowledgeable digital photography book, nor an amusing account of the author's introduction to digital cameras. (Shenton's illustrations are quite funny, however!)Lessing's description of memory fails to even mention SD or MM cards. Her description of photo software just covers her opinion of the few she has used. She's a Sony user who states there are no really good HP or Kodak digital cameras; although she admits her opinion there might become outdated, which it certainly has. Actually, the whole book is outdated, even though it was just published in 2003, and just hit my local library as a "new" book.Take my advice, which is no worse than the author's advice--take the money you would spend buying this book, and instead get a year's subscription to PC Photo magazine.PC Photo will give you the latest information on digital cameras, memory, scanners, printers and software...and will give you much, much more knowledgeable, as well as easy to understand, advice about picture taking, storage, editing and burning.

Choices.......2007-08-23
I really enjoyed Curbside Boys. Besides all the awesome music references ("I wish I'd taken pictures..."), the story was truly heartfelt. I loved Drew's progression. He still had a lot of insecurities, but he still grew so much by the end. I particularly loved the panel where Drew decided to work out. I have friends who like to joke that any gym membership is supporting "body facism." But Drew didn't become a muscle queen, he just decided to take concrete steps at addressing his low self-esteem.
On a personal note, I really appreciated the fact that Curbside Boys had people of color as main characters AND as random love interests. It was clear they weren't just tokens. Kevin was just uptight, pragmatic, stable Kevin. Not "the black roommate." Curbside Boys was definitely money well spent!
Love These Boys.......2007-08-06
I've been a Curbside fan for years. The strip has a sweet worldliness and wry, askance view of gay city life that has always been a refreshing counterpoint to the bad puns and pseudoporn of other gay comics. It's a warm, funny, realistic, perspective I've always admired. It's funny, realistic, and grown-up; If you find that "depressing," well I guess there are other happy endings out there you could read.
Terrible.......2007-02-06
Way too much text per frame, so much that the artwork is overwhelmed. Which is probably a good thing, since the artwork is horrible, amateurish, the kind of doodling you would see from a young boy with an interest in art but no training. The most important problem is that the strip is not in the least funny. Most of the strips are depressing; the "gags" evoke sadness, even despair. I can't tell if the author is trying to depress his readers for some crazy reason, or if he thinks he's being funny. Either way, he should take a look at some of the best gay comics.
One of the best graphic novels there is, very touching.............2002-12-17
When I got "Curbside Boys" in the mail, I spent the entire evening reading it, forward and backward, every page, and I still can't get enough of it. I have been a fan of "Curbside" since I was in college and no other comic strip comes close to capturing the pathos and "bittersweetness" of the characters as "Curbside" does. You (as the reader) are able to connect with the characters on a more personal level, sympathize with them (such as Drew's mourning of his deceased professor/lover), get annoyed with their calculating antics (eg. Nathan's fear of commitment), but love them at the end, faults and all. It's too bad that Rob only had a few cameos (unlike the first "Curbside," in which he and his husband Tony were the protagonists), and since I'm a woman I wished there were more female characters besides the occasional lesbian and Nathan's mother. Otherwise, I would say that EVERYONE should read this book (unless you are only into (and/or only allowed to read) G-rated material- some of the strips are rather "raunchy"), laugh and cry along with, and cheer for the characters. Thanks Rob!
Thrilling Gay Relationship Comic Strips.......2002-11-20
Robert Kirby's "Curbside Boys" is an enjoyable romantic melodrama largely following the life of Nathan, a handsome 20-something guy in New York City.
Nathan, introduced in Kirby's previous collection, "Curbside", has just moved from Minneapolis to Manhattan. Nathan finds work in a coffee shop and shares an apartment with two new characters, Kevin and Drew. Kevin has an on-and-off relationship with boyfriend Rain. Drew is a young, inhibited writer-wannabe who keeps a nervous eye on Nathan. Bob, an important character in "Curbside" makes an appearance as a confidante to Nathan. While Nathan and the others cruise about, stirring up action, the real drama is the growth of emotional bonds between the main characters.
While it isn't necessary to read "Curbside" first, people who like "Curbside Boys" will want to check it out.
Kirby captures the relationship-based hopes and fears of the young, urban, gay community.
I look forward to the sequel!

Wonderful reading for young and old alike!!.......2003-02-06
I couldn't put this book down from the moment I picked it up!! Arthur Griffin :-) captured the Revolutionary War from the perspective of a young boy approaching manhood.
The reader will see how communities were split between fighting the British or supporting the revolutionaries..... see how communities viewed the Indians..... and how a family struggled as they saw their son, Asa, leave for adventure, only to find romance.
If you are a youth looking for insight into how the Revolutionary War made young Asa struggle with his place in the world, or an adult looking for a historical narrative of Revolutionary War times, neither will be disappointed!!
Two thumbs up from this reader!!
