Book Description
In this riveting narrative of family, betrayal, vengeance, and murder, Lillian Baptiste is willed back to her island home of Dominica to finally settle her past. Haunted by scandal and secrets, Lillian left Dominica when she was fourteen after discovering she was the daughter of Iris, the half-crazy woman whose life was told of in chanté mas songs sung during Carnival: Matilda Swinging and Bottle of Coke; songs about a village on a mountaintop and bones and bodies; songs about flying masquerades and a man who dropped dead. Lillian knew the songs well. And now she knows these songs -- and thus the history -- belong to her. After twenty years away, Lillian returns to face the demons of her past, and with the help of Teddy, the man she refused to love, she will find a way to heal.
Set partly in contemporary Washington, D.C., and partly in post-World War II Dominica, Unburnable weaves together West Indian history, African culture, and American sensibilities. Richly textured and lushly rendered, Unburnable showcases a welcome and assured new voice.
Customer Reviews:
Takes a while to get started.......2007-09-07
I took a little while for me to get into this book. I, quite frankly, didn't care about Lillian the main character until I was almost a third of the way through. The most dimensional and complex characters were of course Matilda and Iris. Once the novel's focus shift primarily to them, it becomes a page turner. If you feel like investing the time to get to the heart of this tale, give it a read.
Chimamanda Adichie's comments on Unburnable.......2007-07-23
Chimamanda Adichie (Half of a Yellow Sun, Purple Hibiscus: A Novel) had these wonderful things to say about UNBURNABLE in the book review section of London's Guardian newspaper on Saturday June 23, 2007:
"I read Marie-Elena John's novel Unburnable on the plane from New York to Copenhagen. I laughed aloud so often reading this wondrously intelligent book about Dominica and the United States and Africa, about gender, class and race, about love and sexuality, that the bespectacled man sitting next to me put his Wall Street Journal down and leaned over to see what the title was. He asked what it was about. I could have told him how it dealt honestly with issues without ever forgetting to keep character and soul as its centre, but instead I told him a tiny anecdote from the book about black women and thongs. And I much enjoyed his blush."
A Must Read.......2007-03-27
This is a great book to kick back in silence and just immerse yourself into suspense, deep thinking, and a few tears. I was just a little disappointed with the ending, but all in all this was a great read.
Not a Fluff Read!.......2007-01-14
I have been blessed enough in the last week to read not one but TWO great books this one being the greater. I will admit I wasn't wrapped up in the book by page two but by page ten I was all caught up in this story. Marie-Elena John is an EXCELLENT story teller. Her words are beautiful and her descriptions come off the page so effortlessly. I could've easily believed this was her third novel instead of her first. I laughed, I cried and I called all my friends and advised them to please read this book. I did not know anything about Dominica before picking up this novel and now I cannot learn enough. This book intrigued me to no end and I cannot wait to read future publishings from Marie-Elena John. This story is not in the least predictable and her knowledge on the subject matter is outstanding! If you are looking for a mind challenging novel that will shock and educate you at the same time then look no further.
Long Story Short.......2006-11-08
Interesting story, you have to continue to read this book and not stop or you might get side tracked if you put it down for too long.

Book Description
Stunning artwork depicts the lives and daredevil raids of famous pirates such as Blackbeard, Madame Cheng, and Captain Kidd, while clever cutaways and authoritative text reveal the day-to-day life on board their ships. This is the perfect book for young swashbucklers!
Customer Reviews:
Lots of Info! Argh!.......2006-08-22
This book is chock full of beautiful pictures and offers a brief discussion on: What are pirates?, On the High Seas, A Pirate Ship, Life aboard a ship, Tools of the Trade, Barbary Pirates, The Spanish Main, Piracy in the Caribbean, African Coasts, The Orient, Pirate Women, Buried Treasure, Rules of the Game and Pirates of Today. The book also includes a short glossary of some of the terms used in the book.
While the book itself is short (32 pages) it is well written and could certainly hold the attention of any person (young or old) with an interest in pirates. This particular book seems to be aimed at the 9-12 age group, but the pictures and text would keep them coming back to it again and again.

A must for any Pens fan!.......2001-02-26
This book is great! It provides a sentimental and personal insight into the Pens' 1992 Stanley Cup season, complete with many interviews with the players. It is obvious that Molinari cares about the Penguins because of the emotion that this book can bring out in any Penguins fan. A great book to read to relive the early 1990s dominance of the Penguins.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book........2007-01-05
The topic is very well covered. It offers some very good harmonic devises.
Hybrid Picking is just mindblowing........2006-08-03
If you want to be original in your playing, this book is for you. I have gone through all the exercises, and believe me, it will take a lifetime to explore all the permutations that can happen in this method. I tried using this method in my playing employing my own bass runs and other sweep picking techniques. The results are truly amazing. The best part of this book is that the writer encourages creativity. It is not that show and follow sort of books you get often. This is the ultimate guide for original playing. A must have for the independent guitarist.
Great addition to your library !!!.......2006-06-06
This is a great book/cd combo. The compositions are fantastic.I have been working on the study #1 and it is really beautiful. When you think what a single lesson costs this becomes a bargain of the century .My only complaint is that the standard tab lets you know which note at which fret but not which finger plays that note. Most of the times this is pretty obvious though.Definitely the best book of its kind that I have seen .
"Highly recommended" (Lee Prosser - Jazzreview.com).......2006-02-26
By LEE PROSSER - JazzReview.com
Recognized for his unique stylings and innovative approaches, Gustavo Assis-Brasil shares with guitarists his many intricate insights for a complete method of combining pick and fingers for hybrid picking. His book will educate and entertain. In creating this fine book of instruction, the author provides step-by-step exercises. He gives standard notation and tablature, and there is a CD with examples and compositions included. The user of this book will learn how to combine legato, alternate, and sweep with hybrid picking. Chapters include an excellent section on hybrid picking lines, melodic pairs, 12 tone lines, harmonic exercises, permutation chart, and voicings. Each chapter covers in-depth its subject matter in concise, clear writing and examples. Highly recommended for those interested in developing hybrid guitar picking skills.
An Excelent Book That Fills A Real Need In The Realm Of Guitar Pedagogy.......2006-01-16
I'm a professional guitarist and guitar teacher and am submiting the below review based on many years experience performing and teaching the guitar in a variety of styles.
Many guitarists' right hand technique is limited to the use a pick only. Others favor the use of their individual right hand fingers exclusively. The technical exercises required to excel at each approach vary somewhat and the strengths of each approach also vary. For example the pick is a wonderful tool for creating a consistent sound while performing complex, linear single note lines while the use of individual fingers allows for a more contrapuntal approach and excels when wide intervals are required.
Since both techniques are strong at bringing out different types of musical material the obvious question is; why not use both approaches at the same time and get the best of both worlds? In fact a number of great players have been doing just that with what has come to be called Hybrid Picking technique for quite some time but, up to now, no one as knowledgeable as author/guitarist Assis-Brasil has taken the time to really address the technical challenges that a person encounters when trying to get a significant level of mastery in this area.
Hybrid Picking For Guitar is a well organized book that finally addresses this neglected area of guitar technique: the art of using a guitar pick held between thumb and forefinger combinded with the remaining available right hand fingers together as a powerful and well integrated 'team' which then allows the player to optimize the strengths of both approaches. The beauty of the approach is that the player doesn't have to sacrifice anything; if an idea sounds better with a pick it can still be performed with one whale a phrase that can only be played using individual fingers can also be executed with ease and each phrase could be part of one longer integrated line.
The book explains the technique extremely clearly and lays out a series of well thought out exercises that are designed to help the student gain strength, independence and control. The curriculum then progresses to examples which both help the student extend facility while also showcasing some of the musical ways in which the technique can be used. Perhaps the highlight of the book is the section at the end which features a series of wonderful and varied compositions by the author. The pieces are both very instructive and very musical which is not always the case in instructional books.
Most essentially author Assis-Brasil does a great job of giving a sense of how Hybrid Picking technique can be used both to transcend the limitations of existing guitar technique and the confines of traditional guitar vocabulary and/or play traditional guitar phrases with more ease and speed. It soon becomes obvious that, as a guitarist, one may be able to play musical ideas that have previously seemed only possible to execute on piano or saxophone for example.
Assis-Brazil has made a great contribution to guitarists by writing this excellent book because it lays out a methodical approach to mastering the technique and gives inspiring examples of it's application in real music. I strongly recommend Hybrid Picking For Guitar to any student of the guitar especially those who want to expand their technique and musical vocabulary in line with their imagination not limited by traditional guitar technique.

Fala Brasil.......2007-03-10
If you really want to learn Portuguese, this is the book to use. I highly recommend.
Book Description
With the intimacy that has become his trademark during a photographic practice covering more than 40 years, Ralph Gibson now captures Brazil in all its carnivalesque splendor. Here are the vibrant colors, both natural and manmade, of the tropics; the beating sun on the beaches and the beating drums of a joyous band; and, of course, the faces and figures of that country's famously exhibitionistic women. Gibson's photographs have often focused, with unusual sharpness, on a single geometric element (the corner of a room, for instance) or a single human gesture (the curve of a hand). Now his remarkable eye picks up on the neck of a guitar, framed against the white sands of the beach, a reminder of his exploration of the three dimensional within photography. The chiaroscuro of shadow and white linen evokes his previous black-and-white portraits. And a portrait of a man whose head is obscured by a soccer ball, a witty quote of Magritte, connects with Gibson's lifelong interest in Surrealism. The art, music, and culture of Brazil is growing increasingly popular around the world, and those who want a master's look at this endlessly fascinating land will enjoy this collection of photographs, all of which are published for the first time here.
Book Description
This is the ideal text for first-year students of Brazilian Portuguese at the college or high school level. The book is divided into 20 lessons with structural, communicative and cultural goals. It is accompanied by a language lab/writing manual and an audio program, which can be heard at our web site.
Customer Reviews:
Very colorful and useful.......2007-04-04
This third edition of Brasil! is a huge improvement over past editions. It is very colorful and useful as a textbook. Compared to other textbooks in the university store, the price is extremely reasonable.
this is a terrible textbook.......2005-10-11
This review is about the 3rd edition. I am currently using the book in my 101 classes. The first remark: the authors sell the textbook as if it were a comunicative method. One has just to examine the first chapter to see it is not the case, so they either do not know what a comunicative approach is or it is just a lie. It is a teacher centered book, no doubt about it. In order to give the word to the students I have to come up with a lot of interactive activities myself so they don't get bore and end up dropping. Overall I feel a great deal of imballance in this textbook: there little if none articulation between grammar topics, vocabulary and cultural themes: i.e., chap. 2 is about adjectives but it does not include the parts of the body and personality traits. In chap. 4 the verbs ir, vir, fazer and ver are not applied in any of the readings: absurd! Not to mention the misleading explanation of the prepositions a and para used in conjunction with ir. I was outraged by the absence of a note about the colloquial use of "em" instead of "a" in informal language. I am a native speaker still the way it is explained there got me very confused! One can say there is an abundance of imput from real Brazilian university students in the "vozes brasileiras" section but most of the times I do not have time to do it all. The fact that the book shows only Sao Paulo is definitely a weakness. The author could have dedicated a chapter to each one of the states, instead. Brazil is not only São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro, just like it is not only the Amazon forest, it is also Caatinga, Cerrado, Pantanal and Pampas: it is absolutelly necessary to avoid essentialisms when dealing with culture! A question to the author: if the book portrays only Sao Paulo why then the need to teach students in the intro to brazilian pronunciation and later on recorded material the tchee and djee sounds that are definetelly not from the paulista variant? For me it is an indication that this book was created in different layers through time: it seems to have started as a grammar centered book with lists of vocabulary, then they added on some texts, probably the dialogues with translation in the end of each chapter, then they added on the sections "vozes." Then they got the vozes brasileiras, a new audio on mp3 to make it look modern and "voilà." The problem is that the layers often do not correspond between them creating a disconcerting disorientation and a disappointing challenge to the one teaching the class. The teacher's manual carries a numeration of pages that does not correspond to the one in the TB. It also does not suggests games and interactive activities: it just suggests how to present grammar topics and follows with tons of traditional exercises. The speakers they chose for the recording do not have a good voice: I'm sorry but the girl's voice seems that she is about to cry! Last but not least in the list of aberrations contained in this book:there is a plethora of errors, I found a terrible one in chap. 2 when the author indicates a wrong preposition to use with states. Sometimes the author uses continental portuguese lexical terms that do not apply to brazilian port without saying nothing about it. This book proves that there is market out there for someone competent enough to write a real comunicative book from scratch. Meanwhile I'll have to stick to it because the choice was not mine (I would have turned it down from at first glance just by looking at the uggly illustrations and the poor, confusing layout. I'd rathe have the trouble to use a continental portuguese book that using this for another year. This book is like a Frankenstein monster: Brasil Lingua... proves that an assortment of unmatching text parts sown together does not live up to the challenge of creating a fun and functional textbook! It is not suitable for a class: I'd say buy at your own risk only if you are studyig alone and have some previous knowledge of the language "e olhe lá!"
A culturally biased and deeply disappointing textbook.......2005-02-03
I find Brasil! Lingua e Cultura a deeply disappointing textbook. The emphasis on colloquial spoken Brazilian Portuguese is fine, but the grammar sections should make a clearer distinction between colloquial usage and what is acceptable in the formal written language as used for example in newspapers. Brasil! is also culturally biased as most of its real language samples are from young (college-age), urban middle-class (or upper middle-class) speakers from the state of Sao Paulo. In fact, if you read Brasil! without any prior knowledge of Brazilian socio-economic reality, you might be tricked into believing that going over the weekend with friends to one's parents' beach apartment or country cottage is a normal passtime for any ordinary young Brazilian !
3rd edition (2002) is wonderful!.......2004-04-15
The 3rd edition of Brasil! is a much improved revision of the second edition. The text is now in full color at a very reasonable price and is loaded with new photos, realia, exercises, and explanations useful to native speakers of English AND Spanish. The audio lessons are available online (in a downloadable RealAudio format), which reduces the cost to students. After looking at and using three different Portuguese language textbooks, I can confidently recommend Brasil!.
Furthermore, I have recommended this book to several students who are interested in learning Portuguese on their own. The text and ancillaries allow for such independent study. Finally, LinguaText provides excellent customer service both for professors and their students.
Addendum to My First Review.......2000-02-05
Brasil!: Língua e Cultura is probably one of the better Portuguese textbooks on the market despite some of the aesthetic problems that I mentioned earlier. It should be noted that ALL textbooks have some errors or other minor "burps". I would like to again reiterate that the Lingua Text personnel were always very helpful.
Book Description
A firsthand survey of the most original graffiti scene to emerge in the past decade.
From the startlingly distinctive achievements of the internationally renowned twin-brother painters Os Gemeos to the visual powers of the ubiquitous daredevil Pichadores, Brazil's graffiti captivates with entirely fresh ideas, techniques, and messages. Whether one's taste is for the extraordinary creative extremes generated amid urban deprivation or for crafted murals at their most elaborate, Graffiti Brasil offers both stunning photography and in-depth history and insight.
Graffiti Brasil is the result of collaboration across three continents. Tristan Manco is from England, and is the author of the best-selling Stencil Graffiti and Street Logos. Caleb Neelon (SONIK) is an artist and writer from Boston, who has been traveling to and painting in Brazil since 1997. Ignacio Aronovich and Louise Chin are "Lost Art," and have for many years documented the streets of Brazil from their home city of São Paulo.
With graffiti worldwide becoming more homogenized, this book is a reminder of the strengths of creative independence and the rich fruits of cultural diversity. 440 color illustrations.

Graffiti Heaven.......2006-06-27
The absolute be all and all for information on the capital of contemporary street art graffti style. From the hi to the lo, this book covers the anthropology of this growing art form.
Vivid Photography and Smart Commentary.......2005-12-25
Great book that shows a cross section of the Street Art scene in some of Brazil's cities. The author interviews some of the artists, and is able to talk to the history and techniques used, so it is more then just pretty pictures.
Since when is Brasilian Graff JUST Sao Paulo?.......2005-10-31
This is a nice book and all - the photographs are of high quality and the writing is relativley on point - but there is one glaring problem with the book. Considering that the title of the book is "Graffiti Brasil" I find it at the same time strange and disconcerting that all it ammounts to is a circle jerk for the Sao Paulo graff scene.
Although littered with great shots of murals, throwups and pichacao from all over SP there are only a handfull of photos from Rio, Salvador, Minas, Curitiba or any of the other large cities in Brasil that sustain their own very unique scenes. And, to add insult to injury, the pictures collected of cities that are NOT Sao Paulo are shots of some of the most widley seen graffiti in each city. Hell, the one shot of any Bahian graffiti is a small piece of a huge mural in the middle of the tourist section of old town Salvador. Good job Tristian Marco, way to really go looking for new, unknown and unique pieces.
If you're a Paulista or are afflicted with the notion that Brasil doesnt exist outside of SP, this book should be great. But, if you want to actualy LEARN anything about Brasilian graff, you'd be better off saving the money from buying this book and putting it towards a plane ticket.
melton magidson.......2005-10-30
Tristan Manco did it again, i think he is a writer that tells it
straight, and he is so easy to read and comprehend. I loved the book.
thanks a lot,

South American Road Atlas.......2007-01-09
This road atlas is invaluable for driving in the Southern part of South America. The best maps are for Argentina and Argentine cities. The Chilean maps are not quite as good, but will at least get you to the town for which you are looking. E-mail and internet are non-existent in the boonies (and intermittent in Argentine cities) so internet devices will not work in all rural areas, making a paper map a necessity unless one has a reliable GPS.
