Book Description
(Book Jacket Status: Jacketed)
From Nobel laureate Naguib Mahfouz: the three magnificent novels—published in an omnibus edition for the first time—that form an ancient-Egyptian counterpart to his famous Cairo Trilogy.
Mahfouz reaches back thousands of years to bring us tales from his homeland's majestic early history—tales of the Egyptian nobility and of war, star-crossed love, and the divine rule of the pharoahs. In Khufu's Wisdom, the legendary Fourth Dynasty monarch faces the prospect of the end of his rule and the possibility that his daughter has fallen in love with the man prophesied to be his successor. Rhadopis of Nubia is the unforgettable story of the charismatic young Pharoah Merenra II and the ravishing courtesan Rhadopis, whose love affair makes them the envy of all Egyptian society. And Thebes at War tells the epic story of Egypt's victory over the Asiatic foreigners who dominated the country for two centuries.
Three Novels of Ancient Egypt gives us a dazzling tapestry of ancient Egypt and reminds us of the remarkable artistry of Naguib Mahfouz.
Customer Reviews:
some lovely writing, but maybe not the author's best work.......2007-05-30
Apparently these are the first three of the author's novels. This is a beautiful edition and it is also cheaper than buying the three paperback novels separately. There is an introduction, a chronology of the author's life, and then the three novels.
The introduction is a missed opportunity. I think that I might have appreciated these novels better with the help of some information about the culture in which they were written. However the introduction offers little more than plot summary. I recommend skipping it. The chronology is nice, but not tied in with the introduction.
The first novel, Khufu's Wisdom, seems to be about fate and moral choices. It tells the story of a king whose efforts to defy his fate only help to make that fate happen. It is set during the construction of one of the pyramids, but there is not much in the way of historical detail (and I think there are also some historical inaccuracies). It reads more like a biblical fable than a historical novel. It is beautifully written, but the story is somewhat simple by modern American standards.
The second novel, Rhadopis of Nubia, is much better than the first. It tells of a disastrous love affair between a king and a beautiful courtesan. It is also beautifully written, in a lavish, sometimes over the top style.
The third novel, Thebes at War, did not grab my interest and I didn't finish it. Maybe I'll try again later.
The three novels have three different translators, but all of the translations read well and have a similar flavor.
If you have not read any of the author's work before, you might also consider starting with the Cairo trilogy.
Excellent.......2007-05-21
I am so happy to have read this book. Naguib Mahfouz is a master. The stories were unique, thought provoking and powerful. I could read his work everyday forever.
Customer Reviews:
excellent introduction to Nubia.......2000-08-17
This book, divided in two sections, was compiled during the course of the 1993 exhibition of the same name. It collectively portrays the fruits of knowledge of it. In the first part, the author introduces this fascinating civilization, by explaining its politics, religious beliefs, society, culture and history from the Bronze Age to the Napatan Meroitic Period. The second part contains more than 300 black and white pictures presented at the exhibition. This is a valuable work for those needing to learn more about Nubia.

Genesis of the Pharaohs

Book Description
Ethnic groups are often seen as distinctive, well-defined units. Yet recent research suggests that ethnic boundaries are permeable, and that ethnic identities are contested, manipulated and overlapping. This is particularly true when cultures come into direct contact, as with the Egyptian conquest of Nubia in the second millennium BC.
Smith uses Nubia as a case study to explore the nature of ethnic identity. He begins by using the tools of anthropology, examining the ancient Egyptian construction of ethnic identities with its stark contrast between civilized Egyptians and barbaric foreigners--those who made up the wretched Kush of the title. The book then turns to archaeological evidence for ethnicity on Egypt's southern frontier, in the fortress community at Askut and the pyramid cemetery at Tombos. The multiple dimensions of ethnic identities and boundaries are highlighted as the author juxtaposes the political use of the ethnic "other" in texts and monumental art with archaeological patterns of mutual influence and intermarriage across ethnic boundaries.

Book Description
Following the Napolenoic military campaign in Egypt (1798-1801), Europe rediscovered the ancient Egyptian civilization, and later expeditions deppened and amplified knowledge of the country's archaeological momuments, giving birth to a new science - Egyptology. This volume recounts the era of early Egyptology at the start of the nineteenth century, and presents the ,ost beautiful plates from Rosellini's original work made following the long expedition.
Customer Reviews:
A Beautiful Glimpse at Lost Art Treasures.......2007-02-02
Rosellini traveled throughout Egypt and Nubia during the early-to-mid 1890s in the company of such illustrious companions as Champollion. They were present for the openings of many Theban tombs and recorded the inner temple paintings of Abu-Simbel before anyone in the West had heard of it.
Rosellini's paintings were originally published in 5 gigantic volumes, so what we have in this book is simply a sampling of his overall work. But what a joy for the eyes and the mind these images are! The colors are brilliant and the images are exactingly reproduced by both Rosellini and the publisher.
The paintings are divided into sections according to subject matter. I found the descriptions of the paintings rather scant, but the majority of the original tomb paintings Rosellini copied are now either devoid of color or, more often, destroyed, thus making this record invaluable. Unfortunately, Rosellini's work is not often reproduced, so don't miss this rare glimpse into the past and the splendid artwork copied when it the originals still looked so fresh and perfect that the artist might have just stepped out for a break.
My only complaint/cry is for more of Rosellini's work to be reprinted in fine, oversized form like this and for a price as reasonable as this book's. There's not much text, but you'll find your friends can't keep their hands off this book, even the ones who are normally bored by Egyptology.
Book Description
In this diary, engineer and explorer of Egyptian antiquities Giovanni Battista Belzoni (1778-1823), recounts a life story as entertaining as the best fiction. Beginning with his childhood in Padua where he was one of 13 children, moving on to his early adulthood in England where he was a member of a circus troupe, and, finally, his later years spent searching for antiquities in Egypt in an era when the desert sands concealed boundless treasures, Belzoni's diary chronicles an extraordinary life. His discoveries, including the temple at Abu Simbel, the pyramid of Khafre, and the tomb of Seti I, made a fundamental contribution to our knowledge of ancient Egypt, yet Belzoni has remained obscure-until now. His journal gives readers fresh insight into an exciting time in the history of archaeology and into the career of one of the pioneers of Egyptology, later praised by Howard Carter as "one of the most remarkable men in the entire history of Archaeology."
Customer Reviews:
Excellent and Entertaining with a few corrections..........2007-05-19
First: This book as published contains some errors so be sure to correct them in your copy. Corrections are listed after the review.
This book is an excellent book if you are interested in the early explorations and excavations of Ancient Egypt. It reads like an adventure and puts you in the shoes of the first archaeologists. In fact, Howard Carter, the man who discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922, referred directly to this book written 102 years earlier saying "Belzoni's account of his experiences in Egypt...is one of the most fascinating books in the whole of Egyptian literature." (pg 68 in both The Discovery of the Tomb of Tutankhamen by Howard Carter and A.C. Mace and The Tomb of Tut Ankh Amen: Volume 1: Search Discovery and the Clearance of the Antechamber (Duckworth Egyptology) by Howard Carter and A.C. Mace)
This book was originally written and published as "Narrative of the Operations and Recent Discoveries within the Pyramids, Temples, Tombs, and Excavations in Egypt and Nubia; and of a Journey to the Coast of the Red Sea, In search of the Ancient Berenice; and another to The Oasis of Jupiter Ammon" by Belzoni in 1820 in London with publisher John Murray, Albermarle-Street and printed by Thomas Davison, Whitefriars.
That said, this 2007 version is a nice hardcover of the original 1820 version (word for word), with a few color pictures but minus many of the plates and a detailed table of contents as in the original. Also, the entire account by Mrs. Belzoni entitled "Mrs. Belzoni's Trifling Account of the women of Egypt, Nubia, and Syria" has been omitted. Additionally, the appendix written by G. Belzoni containing "An explanation of some of the Principal Heiroglyphics", is also missing. Both sections together account for nearly 100 additional pages of Belzoni's original work as published.
One can find the entire narrative in pdf form online through some museums if interested with these sections included, just search for the original title. However, when compared to a digital version, this version is already printed on paper, the typeface very readable, the binding is very sturdy, and the book is compact making it ultimately more portable and more likely to be read. Compared to reading a 500+ page pdf file on a computer screen, I would much prefer to read Belzoni's account in this book and then refer to the digital pdfs for the extras not included in this book. Also, the original 1820 version is out there, but since it sells for anywhere from $5K to $20K, you are much better off with this version from Amazon if you just wanted to read some cool history.
Now, the corrections. In the museum copies, there is an Errata page just after the table of contents which was included in the 1820 version but somehow has not been carried to this 2007 version nor have the corrections been made before publishing. As a result, the errors still exist in this book. However, a pen and some time and you can correct them yourself so here are the corrections and the corresponding page numbers to this 2007 White Star Publishers Edition.
Errata for White Star Edition:
pg 9, line 6, for "1900", read "1800"
pg 36, line 28, for "Memnion", read "Memnonium"
pg 78, line 2, for "El Shal", read "El Shag"
pg 123, line 4, for "Todfa", read "Taffa"
pg 123, line 24, for "large", read "small"
pg 234, line 6, for "opposite Deir, we found the Cacheffs were not there, but at Tomas.", read instead "we found that the Cacheffs were not there, but at Tomas opposite Deir."
pg 383, line 22, for "six hours", read "twelve hours"
(also from pg 383, the original narrative contains 2 additional pages of greek text before the translation which this volume omits, I can't read it but it gives the feeling of authenticity to the original work.)
pg 440, line 1, for "Fedmin el Hanaiser", read "Fedmin el Kunois"
There you go...now you have a corrected edition. Perhaps White Star will come out with a second edition with both the corrections, the omitted sections, and more plates, but until then, this will do.
Travels in Egypt and Nubia (The Great Adventure).......2007-05-14
The price and service from Amazon was GREAT!I had ordered 2 books the other being Belzoni's Travels: Narrative of the operations and Recent discoveries in Egypt and Nubia. This book needed to be ordered from one of your used book vendors(out of print...guality and price were terrific). As it turned out the new book that I ordered from you covered Belzoni's First, Second and Third journey's into Egypt and Nubia. It was a duplicate of the other book less drawings and additional chapters.I wish I had known this at the time....would have purchased only one book. Thank you!
One of the Best Works of Non-Fiction for 2007.......2007-04-03
Not since I visited Egypt many years ago have I been as enthralled with the mistique of that country. Belzoni brings the experience back to life once again, but as the original discoverer of so much rather than as a mere tourist. Here you will find the original diaries of Belzoni -- complete with their original spelling and punctuation mistakes -- that detail not only his uncanny ability to discern the best places to dig, but also the intense rivalries that existed at that time with other archaeologists. Add to this the confused state of affairs resulting from his mode of travel in the early 1800s, and the regional Arabic feifdoms he had to deal with to get anything done, and you have -- in my opinion -- one of the best works of non-fiction for 2007. This book is absolutely fascinating. It would make a great movie.

Book Description
Bankes appeared to have it all, he was rich, confident, handsome, he had been educated at Cambridge where he became friends with Byron, he travelled extensively and was a passionate explorer. His travels on the Grand Tour left him with a great love for archaeology and he amassed a wealth of notes, manuscripts and drawings in subsequent visits to Egypt and the Near East between 1915 and 1919. However, scandal in his private life put an end to his promising parliamentary career and his two arrests for homosexual offences led him to seek exile in Italy, leaving his unpublished archive behind in England. This is the story of Banke's life, travels and his contribution to Egyptology.

Fine legacy of an intrepid explorer.......2007-07-21
This work of bibliography and history tells the story of pioneer Egyptologist William Banks (1786 - 1855), the heir of the Kingston Lacy estate in Dorset. From 1815 to 1819 he journeyed through Egypt and the Middle East compiling a huge portfolio of manuscripts, notes, drawings and paintings by himself and artists with him. The accuracy of these makes it a unique and valuable record of ancient inscriptions and monuments that are now damaged or lost.
Besides describing his travels with frequent quotes from his correspondence, the book also appraises his substantial contribution to Egyptology. The chapters follow his life from his political career in the UK through his travels in Egypt, Nubia, the Sinai, Syria, Greece, Asia Minor to Jerusalem, Petra, the Dead Sea plus his subsequent explorations down the Nile. The 2nd Nubian voyage reached the second cataract and the third reached the ruins of Meroe. Chapter 12 looks at his collection and his legacy.
The quotes from his notes and correspondence are often humorous, provide insight into the people and places that he visited and open a window on the England of his time and the contacts that existed between various famous explorers of the Near East. The book has a Chronology of Egyptian rulers from the predynastic period to Roman times, a Glossary, copious Notes, an extensive Bibliography and an index.
The real treasure of the book is the plates, a set of about 112 drawings, paintings and photographs. These are in colour and black & white and includes inter alia portraits of Bankes and Lord Byron, drawings by Bankes, Henry Salt and Henry W Beechey and paintings by Louis Maurice Linant and Alessandro Ricci. Not only monuments and inscriptions are depicted; there are also portraits of local rulers and illustrations of village life among the Nubian people.

A good resource for black and white ornament.......1999-02-01
An interesting resource. The designs are primarily of logo like graphics, although they do not bear any business names. A ton of different professions and merchants are represented from agriculture to zithers. There are dozens of individual images, the last 28 pages of the book contain full page layouts using various graphics from the previous pages, all of the text in the full page layouts are in German.
