Book Description

This beautifully illustrated book now tells the rest of their story, revealing the full range of Viking life and culture. The Bergers present the Vikings' notable accomplishments as skilled craftsmen, hard-working farmers, prosperous merchants, explorers of faraway landsand as firm believers in personal independence and democracy. (And they didn't even wear those funny horned hats!) Readers examine the magnificent sailing ships that enabled the Vikings to rule the seas for more than 300 years, and learn how they traveled throughout Europe, into Russia, to North America, and even to the Middle East, changing the face and civilizations of much of the world. A vivid look at exciting timesand a great resource for school reports!

a good overview for interested kids.......2006-11-21
This book gives a balanced perspective on Vikings culture and living. It shows the influence on European art and nation building. I like the balance of pictures and text.
Thoroughly researched, engagingly presented text.......2003-11-17
The collaborative effort of Melvin and Gilda Berger, The Real Vikings is an outstanding children's picture book that strives to answer the question of what the Vikings of legend and history were really like? There was a great deal more to the story of the Vikings than their legends of being fierce raiders. Most Vikings were farmers who stayed on the fields in Scandinavia, while others were accomplished explorers. Not all Viking used the seas to raid; some were merchants and traders, while others sought out new lands and navigation routes. Thoroughly researched, engagingly presented text, and filled from cover to cover with magnificent full-color illustrations, The Real Vikings is a very highly recommended addition to family, school, and community library World History collections for young readers.

A great series!!! I love it! It is very interesting and exciting, but not scary. I would definitly recommend this book.
Christian Irish girl captured by Vikings.......2007-07-02
This is the first of the three "Viking Quest" series, which is continued in the "Raiders from the Sea" series. Bree is a young Irish girl who is captured during a Viking raid. Her brother is also captured, but effects an escape, thanks to his sister. The story begins with the first suspicion of a raid, and is concluded with the launch of Bree's escape from the Vikings.
Through the story, Bree battles her fear, anger, and resentment toward her young captor, constantly turning to the Lord for strength and courage. The Christianity did not seem at all forced or contrived, but flowed naturally, as it would in the life of a Christian.
I was pulled into the story, especially as I enjoy this time period. It was written for children, but adults will enjoy a nice quick read. The plot is not simplistic, and moved right along. It is Christian and clean, but not preachy.
I'm going to have to get the other books in the series! This book is followed by "The Mystery of the Silver Coins."
Series Probably Won't Appeal to Non-Christians.......2007-02-12
I knew that this book came from a Christian publisher, but was hoping that the faith of the characters would be an organic part of the narrative, rather than being inserted forcefully into the story. I was disappointed in that respect; sometimes the author laid it on a bit thick, especially with the "miracle" at the end of the book. I thought that it was the Christian belief that we love God just because God IS, and not for what God can do for us in the way of supernatural pyrotechnics. Does this give the young reader an accurate idea of what faith is? If we are in trouble and call on God for a miracle and it doesn't happen, what happens to our faith then?
I also didn't like the disrespectful way that the religious beliefs of the Vikings were treated. To boil religious diversity down to "My God is stronger than your God" is not a particularly helpful message to be putting out into a world that is still filled with religious conflict.
The best book ever! A million stars!.......2006-11-25
I'm thirteen...and I'm reading this series for the third time! It's a book that never gets old! You'll read it over and over again and never get tired of it! If you could give it a million stars...I would!
The way the book is written...is magical! You want to read it slowly to get every word, yet at the same time yourself reading it as fast as you can! It's got mystery and danger...but unlike most...it's so real! The best thing is that the characters always turn to God when they need help instead of panicking or thinking they can do it on their own!
I'm not gonna tell you what happens...cause you need to find out what happens for yourself! You'll find yourself totally rapped up and lost in the book without even realizing that hours that have gone by!
This is defiantly a must read! For everyone!

A Strong Finish to a Wonderful Series.......2007-05-15
The Raider's Promise is an outstanding last book in the Viking Quest series! It's a page turner with high suspense popping up when you least expect it. Author Lois Walfrid Johnson's thorough research takes you right into Leif Erikson's expedition to the new world. Main characters Bree and her brother Devin have unique experiences and many surprises. Mikkel, the Viking raider, comes even more alive in this moving story. Bravo for a satisfying and wonderful culminating book in this series!
The best book ever! A million stars!.......2006-11-25
I'm thirteen, and I just got these less than a year ago...and I'm already reading this series for the third time!
As soon as I was done reading the first, second, third and fourth book...I picked up #5! The first one was a million stars, the second one was even better, the third was even better than that, and it just keeps going up and up! The bigger the number...the better they are! (If that's possible!)
I'm not gonna tell you what happens...cause you need to find out what happens for yourself in this one too! You'll find yourself totally rapped up and lost in the book without even realizing that hours that have gone by again!
Although I was really sad to find out that this one was the last one in the series...I knew I could read them again! And that's what I've done! Starting all the way at the beginning to the happy ending! Only unlike fairytale endings...this happy ending is so real!
This is defiantly a must read! For everyone! No excuses!Even people who don't like to read will lose themselves in these books!
(And believe it or not: So far...every single review for every single book has five stars!)
Raiders Promise.......2006-11-03
I've read all the Viking Quest books. It is just about my
favorite series of books. This was the last book in the series and I
disliked my Viking adventure coming to an end. But your Viking adventure
could just be begining. After you read the first book, Raiders from the sea, you will probably just want to go on to the next and the next until you get to the last book. I highly recommend this series.
Morality Review.......2006-06-13
I thought that this was an excellent, Christian book written in a biblical worldview by a very wise woman.
Sensuality:
All the sensuality in this book is more romance than anything, and is very God honoring and appropriate for 7 year olds to 107 year olds.
Violence:
There are very tense parts in this book, but no gory battlefields or anything of the like.
Drug/Alcohol Use:
I don't believe that it mentions anything, but if it does, it talks only about a sip of wine.
Crude or Profane Language:
Absolutely none.
Conclusion:
The basic plot has be written about by several others, but I will give my opinion: I highly recommend this book to anyone, at any age!
The Raiders Promise.......2006-04-17
This book is the last in the Viking Quest seris. I highly reccomend this book. It is a compelling page turner. Any one any age will enjoy it a benift from it (just read what people have said at the beginning of the book). This is one of the best books I have every read.In fact, it is the best seris I have ever read!

Useless to me.......2005-08-31
I have no need for a picture book. I am looking only for tutorial types of books, at this time. I want to learn and understand how to do this beautiful art form. It had nothing to help someone that is trying to learn. There were 4 things in the entire book that even caught my eye. Good for others that enjoy just seeing the works of other people, I guess. I totally loved the work by Laura Liska Oakes, hope she has another book showing us how to do some of her beautiful pieces!
Thanks to all who reccommended this book!.......2000-01-22
After first purchasing a dud, I was skeptical that this book was all the reviews said it was. I was wrong! This book was exactly what I, as an experienced artist new to polymer clay, was looking for. I will wear this one out looking at the ideas and techniques.
Insipirational.......1999-08-07
This is an absolutely incredible book packed with unique artworkby over 50 different & highly talented artists. As an intermediatepolymer clay artist I look to this book when I need new ideas & inspiration.
Background information is given on each artist including education, technique & style. One or more the artists' best works are then displayed with basic information on the how the artwork was created.
Contact information for all the artists in located in the back along with a small dictionary & a list of reference books the artists' use. Several of the artists also answer questions about their working techniques.
Some on my favorite pieces are a chess set, a mosaic sunflower, a mushroom fairie & a millefiori trade rattle made out of a gourd. I also enjoyed the numerous pieces of jewelry including butterfly, fan & African animal pins.
Fascinating visuals of an extraordinary "new" art medium........1997-06-30
For any reader of Nan Roche's "The New Clay," this new book, "Artists At Work: Polymer Clay Comes of Age", is a refreshing addition to communicate the beauty, imagination, and intricacy of the polmer clay medium.
Having personally seen the works of the the authors as well as contributing artists, this book demonstrates the limitless ways this medium allows artistic expression, from whimisical to serious.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in seeing the best of polymer clay artists "performing" today.
