A 'must' any serious coin collector needs........2007-06-18
A Guide Book of Buffalo and Jefferson Nickels is the eighth entry in the Bowers Series of numismatic references: while general-interest holdings might find it too specialized a reference, any library strong in coin collecting must have this. Fine historical background accompanies detailed high-resolution enlargements of coins and discussions of mintages, market values in different grades, and even a reference to error coins. The chronological arrangement and discussion lends not only to quick identification, but to quick assessment of background history and values, making for a 'must' any serious coin collector needs.

Book Description
Taylor Morrison reveals the history and making of the buffalo nickel through the story of its creator, American sculptor James Fraser. As a boy growing up in the Dakota Territory, Fraser witnessed the virtual extinction of the buffalo and the effect their loss had on the Plains Indians. As an adult, he honored both in his sculptures and his design for the buffalo nickel. Morrison's striking illustrations capture the broad sweep of the landscape and demonstrate the intricate process by which coins are designed and minted.

5 Star Rating.......2007-05-16
This book is perfect for homeschooling unit studies or just pleasure reading. My four year old daughter was zoned in from start to finish. Absolutely beautiful artwork and very interesting subject matter. Highly recommended!
For Gifted Children.......2002-10-09
Having been a teacher of gifted children, it is exciting to have a book such as "The Buffalo Nickel" to offer them. Morrison's telling of the non-fiction story develops their appreciation of American history; the beauty of the artwork teaches a sense of dignity; and the respect for the sculptor helps all children learn about the importance of excellent work. Gifted children need fiction and fantasy, but they also need the challenge of great minds working on great things. This book takes them behind the scenes and tells an interesting story of an important American.
Well rounded illustrated book for kids..........2002-04-27
This book would make a fine gift for someone wishing to introduce a child to a little history of the old west, while at the same time acquainting them with an outline of the coin minting process. Accompanied by many illustrations (nicely printed book), the text is suitable for younger children (I'd say up to 10 years old or so) and will offer a pleasant insight into the life of the man who designed one of our nation's most distinctive coins. Definitely recommended.

Book Description
We are very proud to announce the release of the 14th book in the DLRC Press "Complete Guide" book series. The Complete Guide to Buffalo Nickels, 2nd Edition, by David Lange is now available for shipping. This long awaited update to Dave's 1992 edition is filled with everything you need to know about the series and is a true necessity for anyone who collects this widely popular issue.
Overview of the Series
Lange recounts in almost perfect form the history of the Buffalo series. He takes you from the conception of the series to the last circulating mintage in 1938, incorporating details and accounts that showcase the vast research and time spent in creating the text. Lange provides one of the best-written and interesting case studies of how any series of coinage came to fruition. This section has been largely improved over the first edition. Discussing the design and popularity of the series, Lange leads us into little known and fascinating facts about the Buffalo nickel. The discussion of the history of the Bison used for the reverse design (and what happened to the poor creature), the three Indian models needed to make the final portrait of the Chief on the obverse and the brief biography of the designer, James Fraser, makes for wonderful reading and adds even more substance to an already rich series of coins.
Date & Mint-mark Analysis
The biggest benefit of this book to any collector is the thorough analysis of each date and mint issue. Lang updates and improves his reporting from the first edition with current values and newly discovered varieties. Each date is fully analyzed from mintage, strike and luster to rarity ratings in various grades. David has done the same with an entire chapter devoted to the Proof issues. Strike is a major aspect of any series, but none so much as with the Buffalo series. Many dates are known for the weak strike (15-D, 24-S, 26-S to name a few) and Lang is quite thorough in attributing those dates. This information alone is worth many times the price of the book.
All this and more...
Following the format of all books in the "Complete Guide" series, rarity ratings are given for each date based upon grade and mintage as well as total certified populations from both NGC and PCGS. Also included is information about errors, counterfeit and altered coins, and grading specifics. Virtually everything you need to start or continue your Buffalo Nickel collection is in this new edition. This book is truly a must-have for anyone who collects or is thinking of collecting the Buffalo series.
Collecting Buffalo Nickels
Buffalo nickels are one of the most popular issues of U.S. coinage. They offer a piece of Americana for the history buffs and are also a challenging but obtainable set. Minted from 1913 to 1938, the series is not very large, with fewer than 70 coins to assemble in a standard set. The more advanced collector may choose to add the 1916 double die or the 1918/7-D overdate to create an elite collection. Common date mint state pieces start under $50 and even the key dates are affordable in lower grades.
The most challenging aspect of the Buffalo series is finding these key dates in affordable grades with good strikes. You will often find the 1926-S seems to be more common in MS64 than in AU50. There are two reasons for this anomaly: the coins tended to wear rather quickly, thus making many of the nickels very low grade, and there are so many collectors for the affordable grades that they don't make it onto the market for very long. Don't let this discourage you from starting a collection. Most Buffalo nickel collections are quite varied in grade, with many spanning from XF to MS66. With a little patience, a nice collection a Buffalo Nickels set is a very rewarding endeavor.
Customer Reviews:
I ain't Bufalloin' ya, this is the Best Coin Book I Own!!!.......2005-03-01
Hats off to the author and editors of this book, for it is EXCELLENT!!! This is one of the best laid out, best produced and most thoughtfully written books on coins that I own and, indeed, have yet seen. I highly recommend this to anyone who has an interest in Buffalos. Yes, it is spendy, but with hardcover and good quality reproduction and paperstock (certainly not the highest quality, but good nonetheless), this has to take its place as one of the best values in the coin book world. What I like about this book is that it lays it all out right from the beginning with a protracted but not uninteresting discussion of how the coin came about and including all of the technical/political issues facing the artist, engravers and minters, etc., including lots of pithy back and forth amongst them all as issues are resolved. Next is a chapter on how to grade Buffaloes, one that discusses varieties and rarities and, importantly, then takes on the issue of fakes, frauds and counterfeits that attempt to mimic the rarities. Finally, comes a coin by coin discussion singling out each year and mint with a discussion of relative rarity in various conditions, strike anomalies and, most helpfully, includes photographic examples of important varieties. This is really a super and helpful reference book and I think you would do well to own.
Product Description
Buffalo nickels were struck from 1913 to 1938. This nickel series is considered to be one of the most collectible issues struck by the US Mint. Its unique design lends to its charm and popularity: the portrait of Chief Irontail of the Sioux tribe on the obverse and an American Buffalo or bison on the reverse. It is a small piece of history from a time that was rife with political, social, and economic growth. Walk along the pages of history in the newly added Date-by-Date sections in the Business and Proof Strikes chapters. Includes new information on rarity and striking characteristics for each date and mintmark, and population reports. Also new to this book are a large number of new Buffalo nickel varieties, among the hundreds already discovered - Doubled Dies, Repunched Mintmarks, Overdates, and 3-1/2 legged specimen. With hundreds of images, this book was written to aid the collector and to provide an invaluable tool to identify all the different varieties in their collection.

5 star appeal to RPM/OMM collectors 3 for all else.......2007-09-22
At approx. 320 pps. this is certainly not a demure or weedy tome, and as a 2007 publication it is definitely timely. Having said that, I believe that this book is not an essential acquisition for the straight forward Buffalo Nickel collector (that book would be Lange's 3rd Ed. on the Buff). However, if you are a variety collector it is right up your alley. The book's discussion of the general issue coins is uncannily similar to the format of Lange, and the authors propose to provide the same information as Lange with a couple of added kickers in the form of historical pricing information by grade, and population studies of NGC and PCGS slabbed coins by year and mint. While I found the historical information marginally helpful but definitely welcome, the population guide was a really, really smart idea and a big help. I'm sorry to say that the year by year analysis of the business strikes seemed a bit paltry in the information department. However, the section on the Proof strikes has a lot of new (to me) information and is a big improvement on Lange's book. The real strength of this book is all of the time and effort spent on the known varieties found in the Buffalo world. The lists within are quite extensive and are accompanied by numerous helpful and unhelpful blown-up pictures. A really great addition to this panoply is the inclusion of 'de-listed' varities, i.e. those previously catalogued varieties that have subsequently been deemed not to be. A large part of the book is taken up with a discussion of what a variety makes and related information not specific to the Buffalo. At present, there are numerous used copies of this book available on amazon at prices well below the retail or issue price. As such I would encourage you to acquire it because at the lower prices it is a huge value.

Book Description
Through intensely passionate prose, this unique autobiography charts Salas' dramatic coming of age in the conflicting shadows of two older brothers: one drug addict and a petty criminal, the other an intellectual prodigy.
Customer Reviews:
this book ain't just about boxing.......2005-09-24
Floyd Salas' autobiography, told through a series of vignettes, reads like a novel and yet captures the feel of life as it is lived.
Buffalo Nickel follows Salas' relationship with his brother Al, a James Dean-like figure who has the misfortune of growing older, spending much of his life in and out of prison. Trapped in a bad marriage and unable to hold down a job, Al makes the transition from theif to husler, later becoming hooked on heroin. He becomes a tragic figure, unable to take responsibility for his own life.
Buffalo Nickel begins innocently as an entertaining coming of age story but ends as a frightening tale of an entire family addicted to drugs. As finely crafted as any novel, this autobiography is powerful and disturbing, creating a stunning portrait of the darker landscapes of contemporary life.
Important, moving tale of brotherly love and drug addiction.......1999-05-15
Buffalo Nickel by Floyd Salas is a poignant and moving tale of a man and his older brother. The strife and hardship experienced by the characters within their complex relationships allow the reader to experience a true-to-life story about the effects of drug abuse and suicide. The metaphor presented early in the novel of the buffalo nickel can be applied to the relationship of the brothers Floyd and Al Salas. In the first chapter, Al presents his little brother Floyd with a buffalo nickel. Floyd had just been in his first fight. Al later asks for the nickel back; Floyd returns the nickel. It is this metaphor, the giving of something desired and the subsequent demand for its return, that runs throughout the relationship between Floyd and his big brother. The physical action of Al giving and retrieving the nickel in the first chapter can actually be found through the entire novel. The promises that Al didn't keep becomes the focus of thier hardship. It is a tale of the anguish involved in loving an addict, the trouble that that gets Floyd into, and the eventual reality of letting go. From the beginning of the book, Floyd loves and admires his brother. After the buffalo nickel incident Floyd remarks, "he'd do that a lot to me before it was over." (p. 15) Al teaches Floyd to box. Boxing would, throughout Floyd's life, be a mixed blessing. Due to his brother's aggression Floyd finds himself in many bar fights that he would otherwise have not been involved in. When Al acts as Floyd's coach he is supportive when Floyd is winning, and extremely abusive when he feels Floyd could have done better. It became a bond between the two boys when they were young and remained to be one their entire lives. Boxing would later be extremely important and lucrative to Floyd, as it would earn Floyd a scholarship to college at University of California. Al taught Floyd how to box. He helped him earn this athletic talent. Eventually Al would waste his talent, and desert it for drugs and alcohol. Many of Al's fights were illegal and unfair, and he often got Floyd involved. He gave Floyd something valuable, the drive and ability to box; but he often used his own and Floyd's abilities for the wrong reasons. Floyd completely trusted his brother when it came to boxing, from the very beginning. When Al puts Floyd in the ring with a gypsy-kid a lot taller than him Floyd is fearless. "My brother had put me in there, though I was scared, I wasn't afraid." (P.22) Due to his drug addiction Al had an extreme tendency to steal and be involved in illegal and unfair business. This ultimately would harm the whole family; and early on it harmed Floyd. The second chapter foreshadows Al's future. Al plays with Floyd by pretending to steal his saved money. When Floyd is caught stealing from a store with another child, Al ironically reprimands him, "...don't let anybody lead you into anything like that again." He says to Floyd, "You don't want to end up in reform school like me." (P. 29) Al had saved Floyd this time. Later, Al promises to help Floyd buy a bicycle, because he doesn't want him "...hanging around the streets..."(P. 32) to sell magazines. It seemed as if Al was going to really let his little brother down (again) when he offered a pair of Levi's instead. Then their father stepped in. If he hadn't it would have been the buffalo nickel all over again - promises unkempt. Floyd often feels optimistic about his brother and their relationship during his childhood. As the two of them rode home on the brand-new bike he remarked, "He'd come through again. My brother." (p. 36) Al often warned Floyd against the evils of drugs and crime. During the time that the two were training together Al would say, "Never lie, never cheat, never drink or smoke... and don't take many from people... always be loyal to your buddies..." (p. 64) The extreme irony in these statements become evident as the story progresses and Al proceeds to do all of these things. Worse than that, he encourages Floyd to participate in them. Despite his apparent efforts to steer Floyd away from this kind of life Al's influence gets Floyd into trouble time, and time again. Floyd and Al would end up swindling people for their money as a collaborative effort. This is something that Floyd had watched his big brother do for years. When Al quit training and began drinking and using drugs heavily, this was how he used his time and made his money; he would then blow his money on booze or smack. Floyd is eventually able to use his intellect and his talent to help him overcome the heart breaking disillusionment that Al's unreliability as a brother caused. Through establishing his own separate life and through his poetry and writing Floyd is able to free himself from the invalid personality of his brother Al Salas. When Floyd notices he is being followed by the police he realizes that Al ratted him out. "...The one thing I knew: I could never trust my brother Al again." (P. 276). Ultimately, Floyd is able to release his pain caused by his brother, his addiction, and his unreliability through his writing. A boxing match helps Floyd get out his aggressions as well. During the match Floyd hits Al for some of the many wrongs Al has done him: "...that's for forty years of bullshit!" (P. 341) Floyd is even able to tell Al, "You've cheated everybody you've know and manipulated every situation to your own benefit! To this very day!" (P. 344)
Salas Delivers Hard Hitting Bio.......1997-08-20
Floyd Salas, author of the classic Tattoo The Wicked Cross (a novel that was originally written as a short story about a rape in a juvenile detention center)delivers with a memoir about the love and respect he had for his family, his life, and particularly his older brother, a man who would have a tremendous affect on him. Honest, tough, funny, and sometimes so sad it's hard to read, Buffalo Nickel is written in the same stark realist fashion as Fred Exley's A Fan's Notes and throws the same righty-cross Charles Bukowski hit us with in Ham On Rye

The Mother of all Page Turners!.......2007-10-18
I dare anyone to put this gem of a book down...
It reminded me of Steinbeck in its efficient ability to weave a complex and rich story full of vivid atmosphere out of so few words. A clever mix of genres too - a modern, original story with shadings of the CSI procedural, the murder mystery, and the spaghetti western. That it also manages to include a believable and satisfying love story makes me wonder if it's already being made into a movie. If so, I can't wait.
Quite simply it's a great story told with fascinating characters that leaves you begging for more. And I'm pretty sure that's all I ask for when it's time to curl up with a good book.
The Buffalo Nickel.......2007-10-03
Buffalo nicle, turned out to be a very enjoyable read.
the setting is in AZ and the writer captures the residents down to the tee.
the Homicide detective in this book is very beleivable.
I recieved this book at noon and I did not put it down until evening meal, completed in at bed time. great book.
this is the same author whom wrote BOATSWAINSMATE, so if you enjoyed that book, you will, really enjoy this one.
Southwest Crime conected to a wonderful U.S. Coin.......2007-09-25
Pat Johnston has created a wonderful crime novel that takes place in the southwest and blended the crime to one of the finest coins ever minted that honers our old southwest traditions: "The Buffalo Nickel".Adding in bits of history and interesting characters in his book that takes place in Arizona, makes this a great "who-dunnit" read! I'll be looking for more of Pat Johnston's work!!!Harry Moore, Oregon
Good summer read.......2007-09-11
I really enjoyed this mystery. It reflects the small towns in Arizona and frankly, ended up getting so into the characters and the plot that I finished it in one night. Definitely worth a read.
I wrote with gusto........2007-08-26
As the author, I am biased, but can't help but be enthusiastic about the story. Set in Arizona, I tried to convey the beauty and vastness of the desert in my descriptive passages. The novel moves across the landscape describing the natural features and historical highlights of the region, all in the quest to solve a viscous murder and bring a dangerous killer to justice.
The buffalo nickel, found near the unidentified body by the highway, is a vital clue.
The buffalo nickels were produced from 1913 until 1938 and were considered one of the most distinctive American coins ever minted.
This book should keep you on your toes and turning the pages. "I read it in one night..." a reader recently told me.

Book Description
Kate Field, a journalist, actress, and lecturer once referred to in the Washington Post as the "foremost woman in America," was so moved by Charles Dickens' readings in Boston and New York that she decided to write an account that would allow those unable to attend as close to the first-hand experience of seeing Dickens perform as possible. Her initial attempt in 1868, a 38-page pamphlet, proved to be so successful that she decided to expand it into a book, 'Pen Photographs.' Her own narrative skills were impressive enough to allow readers the "virtual reality" of seeing Dickens perform. The book was published in the U.S. in 1871, and, despite its popularity, was reprinted. Few copies of the original are known to exist. Moss provides the original text and engravings, and a brief introduction.
