The 13th century Sufi mystic Jalal al-Din Rumi was a storyteller who spoke like a songwriter--in metered prose and rhyming verse. Whatever the translation (and there have been many), his words always seem to fall like lilting petals, drifting in a delicate pattern toward some grounded truth. This sensually illustrated version offers yet another new translation in which readers will find a mixture of Rumi's parables and poetry interwoven into each story. Thus, readers will start off firmly planted in Rumi's straightforward, storytelling voice. Then, about four paragraphs down, the translators will insert one of his ecstatic poems, then the tone will return to the story voice. It may seem like choppy editing, but it actually swirls and circles around like a joyful Sufi dancer. The chosen tales are all spiritually inspirational, as Rumi always is, yet they are also a pleasure to read as simple stories told by a master. The illustrations and attentive design artfully enhance the grace and fluidity of Rumi's words. --Gail Hudson

His poetry is a guide to spirituality and wisdom. It is deep,simply-written and interesting. Anyone who reads this book will enjoy it.
The Illustrated Rumi : A Treasury of Wisdom from the Poet of the Soul.......2006-07-01
a masterpiece!!!
Inspiring, contemplative, rich.......2005-10-10
This book is beautiful if only for the artwork, but couple that with the unique parables of Rumi and this is a rich treasury to be enjoyed and savored.
Common heritage of mankind.......2005-05-25
The ultimate source of Rumi`s work is the original work of Mathnawi, in Persian, it has a delicate taste of poetic dimension too, but even without the poetic contribution, Richard A. Nicholson has translated all the 6 volumes of Mathnawi with an excellent translation, eloquent, lovely and elegant. Rumi is an ocean, "The illustrated Rumi" is a very nice sampling taken from these six volumes. The illustrations are taken from the early islamic art, most of which, one has to remind himself, were performed bofore the Renaissance. It has a taste of Arabic Nights in the pictures, what is more important though is the quality of the samples. Nicholson has the best work accomplished, and I recommend it to anybody, to me that book deserves to be written with gold and silver. Still Illustrated Rumi will give an idea of Rumi, especially with the wonderful introduction of Huston Smith, who himself is a leader in religious studies, this book is like cream de la cream of Matnawi as an introduction. The book is worthy of being read carefully at least once. I would recommend reading this book to those people left undecided between a foot long sandwich and a glimpse of the soul.
A Translation Worthy of the Master's Works.......2000-10-04
For those who know Rumi, here at last is a translation and presentation whose majesty match the wisdom of the message. For those who do not yet know Rumi, this exquisite book opens a window to insights that will always be treasured.

The perfect introduction to Persian Cuisine..........2006-07-12
As a Persian who's trying to learn to cook persian food, this is the best Persian cookbook I have. It lists the most popular foods, the receipes are easy to follow and turn out great! Almost as good as my own mom cooks them... I would definitley recommend this book!
Love it, gifted it, traveled with it!.......2006-02-02
I have used many of the recipes, modified them, cooked them with friends and family. I have given my first copy away to my mom and then had to search bookstores to replace it. I even took it on the plane when I visited my family to make a special dinner for my dad's birthday with the whole family there. Grandma even loved it! I especially like to make the crusted saffron, yogurt rice for others. The presentation is great, but best made with a friend to share in the prep. As the author says, nushjan!

Introduction to Persian, Thackston - poor tool for language learning, but a decent reference.......2007-10-03
This book was assigned to our beginning Persian class by a former student of Thackston, who clearly shares many of his thinking styles. The book is not, despite the title, an introduction to _learning_ the language. There are many technical terms from the very outset, and the book assumes knowledge of basic linguistics and grammar at a level appropriate for an upper-year linguistics or language undergraduate. It would be a useful reference as a grammar, but is poor on vocabulary and has little to no contextual situations. Thackston is also highly inconsistent with exercises; only some phrases are transliterated (which is odd, considering the book demands a level of competence with the Persian alphabet that makes those examples superfluous), and does not give answers to any of the various exercises he sets forth. I recognize that there are not many good Persian language instruction texts extant, but this does not help. A good and detailed reference, but not an easy read and extremely dry at many points. I don't recommend it unless you badly need to know Persian syntax/grammar or have already had a modicum of exposure to the writing and vocabulary.
The best - but not very good.......2007-09-12
Unfortunately, good Persian courses are very hard to find. As for learning the grammar, this is the best course out there, and there are also other positive things to say about it. Apart from the grammar descriptions being exceptionally good, I especially liked that both the Persian letters and the Roman letters are used in this course. This should satisfy both those wanting to learn to read Persian and those more interested in first learning how to pronounce and speak.
The main problem, or perhaps the only problem, is the vocabulary. A course with 2000 words would have been excellent and 1500 words would still have been decent. Not even 1000 words means that you are left on your own too soon, without a sufficient basic vocabulary to move on. While I still recommend everybody to buy this book over Teach Yourself Persian (even smaller vocabulary, bad grammar explanations, no transliteration) and give it a slight edge over Colloquial Persian (more conversational). However, I hope a more extensive course will be published soon - one that features grammar explanations and transliterations as good as in this course but with at least twice the vocabulary found here.
Your second book.......2007-02-09
This is a more scholarly work than Mace, and I would suggest that it is only valuable for someone who wishes to speak grammatically perfect Farsi. It is well written, and possibly has the fewest errors of the range of books I have used. Its major downfall is the lack of keys for the exercises provided, which makes performing them into a very frustrating experience.
Best for the intended purpose.......2007-01-03
Thackston's book is one of the best out there for learning Persian. Admittedly, there aren't too many books out there. This book is the best if you're taking a course in Persian, are a heritage speaker, or otherwise have an elementary grasp of the fundamentals. While Lambton's book is much more thorough, Thackston spares us the dense grammar as well as the use of superfluous, hyper-technical grammatical terms. He does cover some material so quickly, e.g. subjunctive, that the coverage appears cursory. But again, this should not be bought as a sole introduction to Persian. Also, the coverage of modern spoken Persian is weak. If you're interested in colloquial, Rafiee's book is the best. Nevertheless, overall, as your second book (or first if you can speak it already), Thackston is a must-have.
The Incoherence of Thackston.......2006-07-07
I am no stranger to technical language, nor do I detest grammatical terminology. I have spent my entire academic life learning or reading Latin, Greek, Syriac, Aramaic, Coptic, Arabic and Persian; I have, therefore, come accross many textbooks of varying usefulness and presentation. Let me say in the strongest possible terms that Thackston's text is the absolute worst text that I have ever used: the book is dry, lifeless, imprecise, and thoroughly frustrating. For reasons best known to himself, Thackston renames all the Persian verb tenses, invents new grammar terminology, attempts to illustrate grammatical concepts with seemingly contradictory examples (esp. the quibbling over the indefinite vs. definite nouns), and rushes through topics here and reintroduces them there (esp. the subjunctive). The book is not thoroughly cross-referenced, and it is written in one of the basest and most insipid forms of English that I have ever read. Is this the best that a Harvard professor can do? It seems that it is, for I also own Thackston's Syriac grammar, which is equally horrid. My entire class hated the book, as has every student of Persian to whom I have spoken at the University of Toronto. I may also point out that Thackston's frequent use of English transliterations without any Persian spelling is positively daft. As many others have mentioned, Thackston's text in comparison with Lambton's is as a candle next to the sun.
Book Description
The mention of Persian painting conjures up images of beautifully illuminated manuscripts filled with tiny, intricate pictures, each a miniature festival of color. Anyone who has seen Persian miniatures up close will attest to their captivating power. In this book, the renowned historian of Islamic art Oleg Grabar introduces Western audiences to Persian painting, which consists primarily of miniatures illustrating works of literature, but also includes murals and small ceramics decorated with pictures. The masterpieces of this painting have a visual richness that requires the use of the intellect as well as the eye for their appreciation, and Grabar seeks to situate the reader within their world, that of Islamic culture in Iran from the Middle Ages to Modern times. Through a series of chapters on various aspects of Persian painting, he helps us understand its history, the characteristics that define it, and the delights to be discovered in it.
Grabar argues that this genre of painting offers a remarkable example of how books are illustrated in general and of how an Iranian secular taste emerged during centuries dominated by religious art. He shows that the peculiarities of its historical background gave rise to specific characteristics: striking colors, dematerialization of space, subtle evocations of emotions, simultaneous lyricism and epic. The qualities of Persian painting created a unique aesthetic mood that is related to Persian poetry and Islamic mysticism.
It was only at the beginning of the twentieth century that the Western art world began to discover Persian painting. Inspired by its use of pure geometry and vivid palette, Matisse and Kandinsky were among the first modernists to incorporate attributes of Persian art into their work. And now, a century later, interest among museum-goers continues to increase. The allure of Persian painting lies in its absorbing complexities and in the surprising way it speaks to large questions about the nature of art and the perception of its masterpieces. Grabar has written an incomparable book that both explains and re-creates the pleasures of this art.

A Concise Thousand-Year History of the Persians........2006-10-24
In about 235 pages, Maria Brosius has done a remarkable feat in presenting in a condensed form, over a thousand-year history of the Persians, in her recent publication: The Persians - An Introduction, published by Routledge in 2006. The book is published in the series "Peoples of the Ancient World" which states: "This series stands as the first port of call for anyone who wants to know more about the historically important peoples of the ancient world and the early middle ages". Truly this book is the essential beginner's guide to Ancient Persia and ideal for students and general readers alike.
European history from the middle ages till the mid-twentieth century, essentially describes the major Persian empires mainly based on the history of the Greeks and the Romans, who regarded them as politically, culturally, and socially inferior. Yet these Persian civilizations were one of the most highly developed of the ancient world. Its society with its many different languages, cultures and religions, had a profound and continuing influence on the Western World. This study vividly introduces the reader to the history of Persia in its own right, as the authoress in her own words states: "With this volume I hope to open a door to the fascinating world of the empires of Ancient Persia to a wider audience ... who want to look beyond the artificial constuction of the East-West divide."
The book introduces the reader to the history of Persia from the heights of the Achaemenid Dynasty (559-330 BC), the first monarchy to create a world empire, to the heterogenous empire of the Parthians (247 BC-224 AD) and the susequent Sassanian Empire (224-651 AD), epitomized in the rule of Khosrow Anushirvan. It also has chapters on separate issues as society, economy, gender, power and defence. The book is well illustrated with several black and white figures, detail maps, an exhaustive bibliography, and an exhaustive genealogical table of the three Persian dynasties on pages 201-203.
Zarathushtrians and Parsis the world over, would do well to give this book their undivided attention, and use it in teaching their young ones the fundamentals of the three major Persian civilizations. Many colleges and universities may want to use it as an introductory text-book for an introductory course on Ancient Persia/Iran. Kudos to Routledge for putting out an excellent paperback.
Best Introduction.......2006-07-08
This book is an introduction to "The Persians" by providing a balanced presentation of the three major periods/ dynasties of the ancient Persian Empire - the Achaemenids, the Parthians (Arsacids) and the Sassanians. Each of the periods is covered in 60-70 pages, where five aspects (Historical Survey, King and Court, Organisation and adminstration of the empire, Religion, Art and Architecture) of the periods are discussed.
There are no other books that I am aware of which cover the 1000+ years of pre-Islamic Persian history, except for a very similar study published by Josef Wiesehofer first in German and subsequently translated into English about 10-15 years ago. As this book is just published and does not burden the reader with convoluted discussions of issues with "Sources," I believe this is a better introduction on the topic.
The strengths of the book are its writing style (careful academic writing yet easy to read), the balanced proportions, nice printings with sufficient maps and illustrations (all placed very conveniently), and a nuanced perspective which highlights (but not in an annoying way) how classical accounts of the Persian Empire were burdened with ideologies of the Greeks and Romans who defined the Persians as the "Other" in developing their own sense of identities for political mobilization.
What comes out fairly clearly in the text is that there is significant continuity in the history, culture and organization of the three periods/ dynasties. This leads me to believe that the presentation of the Persian Empire would have been more complete if the discussion includes the Seleucids -- obviously, they are not Persians, but casting aside classical prejudice, the Seleucids were in fact a dynasty of the Persian Empire.
