Book Description

Noted for its innovative coverage of the West and the environment, this best selling U.S. history text provides students with a clear political narrative that incorporates social, cultural, military, and economic history.

Each chapter begins with a dramatic vignette that both draws students into the chapter and presents the chapter's main themes. The vignettes are followed by three to five focus questions that provide a framework to help students understand the most important topics in the chapter.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Read me a story.......2005-09-24

This book is a joy to read because the text flows in such a way that one would think he was reading the History Channel. While that may seem terrible to some, the book draws not just on secondary sources with a "hindsight" attitude toward the subject matter, but rather engages the reader by reflecting on primary sources, on individual stories while still giving the bigger picture. The incorporation of culural history is one of the main reasons I enjoyed this text, but I also liked how modern finds about certain events (such as the spainish american war) were given alongside the popular thought of the day.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book, But Expensive and Difficult in High School.......2005-06-11

I used the third edition of this book, it was only one volume covering from clonial age to the first election of Clinton. This was the book assigned to my high school and AP history class (my setup was weird 4 periods a week of standard High School history, and 2 a week of AP level history). This book prepared me really well for the AP US Exam, while I have not yet received my score, I am very confident I knew the material well. This book also really helped me for the SAT Subject Test: US History, on which I scored a 96th percentile 780. While this book is good for intense history courses, I believe it is too hard for a standard high school level US History course. This is because it covers too much material for that type of class. This book is very well written, and at times can often be interesting to read, what other text books can say that.

4 out of 5 stars Very Concise.......2003-03-27

This book was very detailed and comprehensive. I used it along with two other books in my AP US History class. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because it jumped around too much perhaps it could have talked about the 1930s in Chapter 24 then back to the 1920s in 25.

5 out of 5 stars Informative and readable.......2002-10-23

Lets face it a lot of history texts are prozaic and they do not have to be. Boyer and the other contributers deliver a text that is well written in the sense that it is somewhat enjoyable. The most important aspect of a text book is the information and The Enduring Vision does not fall short here either. I have used this book for background information in American history as a serious history student. It is a great source for quickly refreshing your mind on seldom visited topics. This would also make an excellent high school history text, but was really written for introductry college courses in American history from the colonial era to the present.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive "Vision" Provides Powerful Insight.......2001-05-11

I used The Enduring Vision as a text for my AP US History class in high school. The organization, development, and discussion in the book increased my understanding of each era of our history. When used as one of two or three texts for the AP class (which I do recommend), The Enduring Vision provided me with insight into the major aspects of our history. The Student Manual to accompany The Enduring Vision was also a helpful tool in preparing for the AP Exam.

Be warned -- the latter half of the book's title has been chopped off of the webpage! This is the second volume of a two volume set, covering (if I recall correctly) 1861 onwards.

2 out of 5 stars Don't forget to check spelling when you write a book........2001-09-19

The book has lots information. It's just organized poorly. It has several spelling mistakes in a couple of the chapters in the beginning. I haven't looked at the rest yet. It is a shame that this is the quality of educational material that people are satisfied with.

4 out of 5 stars Review of Enduring Vision.......1999-11-29

This book is read in my AP US History class at school. It gives a very clear picture as to what was going on historically in the United States. It is easy reading for the class and is great preperation for the AP US History Exam. The only problem with the book is it gets out of chronological order at times. For example at one part the presidency of Jefferson is talked about before a president who came before him chronologically. Despite the book being somewhat out of order it is good reading material for preparation for the AP Exam.

    2 out of 5 stars Too Much!.......2004-05-13

This is history by committee. There are 6 different authors listed for this book, and each of them should have just written a text about their own area of expertise. The text is dry, droning on and on, yet somehow not really getting to any point. I suppose it just lacks a voice or a focus.

It doesn't help that the publisher has crammed in so much to a relatively small trade paperback book by using a small font (about a 10 or an 8). They've also used a light ink on a semi-gloss paper which makes reading uncomfortable. Yes there are full color illustrations and maps throughout, but frankly, I would rather have a text that's more engaging and easily read.

Like its corresponding full-size version, The Enduring Vision, Concise, features an engaging, elegantly written narrative that emphasizes political, social, and cultural history within a chronological framework. The Enduring Vision was the first U.S. history survey text to incorporate sustained attention to cultural history, and is also known for its innovative coverage of the West and the environment.

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Well laid-out reader, but needs more objectivity.......2003-12-21

This is a good general history of the United States, however it too often offers you only a one-sided viewpoint. This book presents problems from a blame America viewpoint too often, including nearly blaming primarily the US for World Wars I and II. It seems too often, and conveniently, important data was left out to lead readers to believe the half-truths contained within.

The inside of the book is quite colorful and easy to read. The layout was well thought through and contains well laid-out information on a broad variety of subjects. As a general reader, I found it quite good in most areas of history. The only part of this history I found lacking was in the more controversial areas, where only one viewpoint was offered and seemed to be the only one accepted.

As the book gets to more modern history, the reader is left no doubt that Reagan was an evil and deceptive man, and Clinton was the saviour of the US people. While some agree with this viewpoint, the authors only present this viewpoint and none other. A look into the author's backgrounds should provide any objective reader information on where the authors were coming from and why they feel this way. I personally like seeing different views of history, and to do this I recommend buying the accompanying document sets and essay sets - they contain different analysis.

This book does present some historical events from both sides, however it too often represents a one sided opinion or presents only half of the story. Even though the reason could be it is a condensed history, it is an unfortunate possibility that certain information was left out in the interest of bias.

As a teacher I had once said, you pay your money and pick your views... there are many different interpretations of the same information in history. I prefer seeing more than one viewpoint in a general history reader.

          3 out of 5 stars Hmmm.....O.K........2005-02-06

Well, I stay in INDIA and i bought this book through a book dealer who charged me 10$ extra than the price @ AMAZON. The book is GOOD nothing more nothing less. But is amazingly attractive. Flipbook is USELESS. packaging is simply AMAZING but THE DVD BEING STUCK IS *BAD* u can get it out albeit a few scratches. OVERALL JUST ABOUT OK.

3 out of 5 stars Didn't inspire or excite me too much........2004-12-31

I had been holding out buying this book for awhile due to the price and then someone bought it for me for Christmas. Yes, the packaging is unique and creative. Yes, there are lots of examples of motion graphics on the DVD. But overall, it just didn't get me excited or inspired which is why I wanted this book in the first place. The book itself is actually a little hard to read due to the awkward way you have to hold it. The little flip-book just seems like a useless gimmick. My DVD was not glued in like the other reviewers of this book, and came out easily.

But in the end, I didn't find anything special about the book or DVD and probably won't watch or read it again which disappoints me.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2004-10-04

The fact that the DVD contains Virgin Airlines "safety" video on it is alone worth the price of admission (or purchase, as the case may be...) Additionally, though, the book offers a very nice overview of motion graphics, complete with a separate flip book for added amusement. The graphics are inspiring for anyone looking to stimulate their creative juices and present something new and interesting to their client.
Using the aforementioned Virgin Air safety video as an example, this is a brilliant example of what can be achieved in pushing the envelope while still making the relevant and important information easily understandable to the end consumer.
Also, regarding the DVD, I had no problems removing it. Perhaps there are two versions of this book/set out there?

3 out of 5 stars the cult of package design.......2004-05-16

okay, so the dvd was a *tad* hard to get out, but it did get out unharmed eventually. once you get past this 'obstacle' though, the rest of the packaging is really cool.

the book present itself as a suitcase of sorts with all these 'stickers' stuck to the front. the cover is a hologram/lenticular graphic which means depending on which angle you view the cover from, you'll see different stickers. the flip book fits snugly into your 'suitcase' as a set of shirts and pants. while pretty novel, is still nevertheless fun to flip though and see segments of the various animations contained on the dvd (except for a McFetridge one which wasn't - baaad!).

the dvd is mastered a bit weirdly though. you can't actually navgiate through all the items individually - only by sections which was mildly annoying. the content however is pretty consistent (even though i wish it was in PAL instead of bleedy/fuzzy NTSC - sorry NTSC people!) which is more than i can say for another motion graphics/animation book i got at the same time (flips animation 7)

the book itself is great, even if it was a bit hard to read when stuck to the heavy cover. if you're easy amused though, you be prepared to forgive these little 'sins' and just enjoy a all round pretty solid book & dvd!

4 out of 5 stars A few issues, but in generl, this is fantastic.......2004-04-09

I also had a similar problem with the DVD being glued into the book. I was able to remove it with a tiny amount of damage - the DVD image got a little scratched. No big deal, and the DVD works fine, but it *is* disappointing. My flip book came out of the package without any issues though.

This really *is* an incredible experience, though, and I highly recommend it. If you love experimetnal format books, this is especially for you.

The biggest issue I have with this is the navigation of the DVD; it is broken into foru sections: commercials, Idents, Music Videos and Animation. Navigation between individual pieces within each category doesnt seem to be possible, which is puzzling.
