Book Description
From the courage and beauty of Esther to the reforming spirit of Catherine the Great, here are essays about ten queens by an author who has been called arguably the best writer of social history for children and adolescents ever. Meltzer, by his own description, is accustomed to presenting history from the bottom up, but he takes a top down approach for these monarchs, revealing the personal and political natures of women who commanded power not because they happened to marry a king but because they ruled in their own right, by themselves. Or if they sat on thrones beside kings, they had as much or more to say about governing than their husbands. Most were, by today's standards, astonishingly young. Many were physically powerful, accomplished women. Some were schooled to rule, others not. But all were ambitious, passionate, and determined to hold power. All were subject to suspicion and envy. And all, in their successes and failures, ideals and compromises, assumptions and privileges, present interesting contrasts with the lives of women today.
Customer Reviews:
Well laid out book.......2007-04-30
I enjoy reading stories of women from pre-history to modern times so this one intrigued me, even though it was written for younger readers. This was a well laid-out book overviewing queens. Sequentially, it went from oldest to newest and spanned queens from 5th century A.D. to the 1700's. Each were from a different place and culture. This book was well researched and was easy to read. The illustrations were done well, giving it an air of mystery, romance and dignity. It's one that I'll keep on my shelves to reference when I want a quick, easy to read overview.
Vaguely Entertaining...........2004-03-29
(...)"Ten Queens" gives the life story of ten monarchs from diverse time periods and cultures, along with the effects they had on their realms.
The problem with "Queens" is that it reads like a textbook, dryly listing fact after fact. It would be perfect for a research report or biography, as it includes firsthand accounts and scholar's analyses. However, the entertainment quotient is somewhat lacking - as I mentioned before, I could read a textbook and be equally intrigued. However, Mr. Meltzer does manage to portray the personalities of these extraordinary women, and certain passages convey how spectacular their lives must have been.
The illustrations nearly make up for how tedious the text of this tome is. The colorful, barely abstract paintings add an air of fun to the otherwise stringent chapters.
Overall, I suggest "Ten Queens" for those wishing to pen a report/biography on Queen Esther, Cleopatra, Boudicca, Zenobia, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Isabel of Spain, Elizabeth I, Christina of Sweden, Maria Theresa or Catherine the Great, but if you are seeking entertainment, look elsewhere.
Great for little girls.......2002-03-28
I found this book at the library by chance. I was looking for a more books about Queen Elizabeth I. This book is a great introduction to women in history. It is easy enough for my then 8 year old to read for the Texas Reader's club. I am definitely checking it out for my 7 yr to use for her TX Reader's club requirements.
Very, Very Good!!!.......2001-12-13
I checked "Ten Queens" out from my local library to brush up on my reading of some of my favorite historical figures of all time- Cleopatra VII and Eleanor of Acquitaine.
While the book shed great light on two of the most famous women in all of ancient/medieval history, the author also brought to light lesser known queens. All of a sudden, I have a great respect for the fearless Zenobia, the corageous Boudicca, and, of course, the Biblical Esther. He has done an oustanding job of researching all of the queens and presenting them all in a favorable light (though let's not forget Christina's hypocritical ways, Cleopatra's love affairs, and Catherine the Great's promiscuity- for history's sake).
All in all, a great book worth the money.
Broad based overview of Queens makes excellent reading........1998-10-24
My nine year old daughter thoroughly enjoyed this overview of famous women rulers from ancient times to the 18th century.

Book Description
This new volume, which draws on an international selection of entries from a great number of countries, testifies to innovation in the planning and management of events, as well as offering professional designers, event managers and the fair-going public a range of visual delights and exhibited inspirations. To research this work, design journalist and insider Conway Lloyd Morgan visited the most significant trade fairs, examining small and large trade fair stands in Detroit, Bologna, Paris, Amsterdam, Basel, Berlin, Munich, Hanover, Frankfurt, Las Vegas, London, Los Angeles, Tokyo, among others.
Customer Reviews:
Trade Fair Design Annual 2002/2003.......2003-04-29
The focus of this edition of TRADE FAIR DESIGN ANNUAL 2002/2003 is put on stands at international trade shows and on exhibits up to 15 000sq feet. Among the 27 examples are stands for Mercedes Benz by KauffmannTheilig and by American stars in the fair business like Mauk Design for Sony Computers Play Station or Lorenc+Yoo for Sony Ericsson.
Although many of the extraordinary stands displayed come from German designers the book shows that today good exhibit design is also made in the UK and in the United States.
As with most trade fair design books coming from avedition this book shows respect to the great overall design idea, presented in sumptuous king size pictures, ... an impression that is backed by the total appearance of the book.
The book consists of five chapters, showing fair stands for transportation, life style, b2b, communication and out of the hall. The design ideas are commented in typically English twinkle toed text, which comes from the London Journalist Conway Lloyd Morgan.
Another new book on the design of stands for fairs and trade shows comes from the German interior design publicist Ingrid Wenz-Gahler and - in total contrast to the book by Conway Lloyd Morgan - concentrates on SMALL stands.
In spite of its English title BIG IDEAS FOR SMALL STANDS the publisher abstained from an English translation - very unusual for books by Ingrid Wenz-Gahler - so you will have to order the book via friends in Europe through amazon.de.
Corresponding with its subtitle - Success with Small Stands - this book concentrates on the 90 percent of all stands for fairs and trade shows which are smaller than 250sq feet. The book shows 66 examples of stands from almost all sectors of business, presented with numerous photos, floor plans and their design and marketing concept. - A guidebook for all those marketing people or designers who are responsible for their companies or their clients performance at a trade show. Although the stands are small many of them have been conceived by stars in this business such as Fabio Novembre, Simone Micheli, Stefan Zwicky, Jordan Mozer or Lorenc+Yoo.
Both books complement one another and provide ideas and arguments how your presentation at a fair or trade show can be more efficient.

The best children's publishing market guide, as usual.......2004-01-02
I'm a children's book editor, and run a web site called "The Purple Crayon," where I review this book in detail. Here are some excerpts from that review:
Children's Writer's and Illustrator's Market has established itself as an inexpensive "yellow pages" of children's publishing for authors and illustrators in the United States.... This year's edition seems to me to be at least as good as its predecessors.
As usual, the core of CWIM is the Markets section, which includes listings of publishers of books, magazines, greeting cards/puzzles/games, and plays, with a special sub-category for young writers and illustrators. The Book Publishers part is just over 100 pages long, as it was last year, with short profiles of 9 "insiders" (writers, illustrators, editors) interspersed throughout. This year, a sub-section of Canadian and International book publishers has been added.... The magazine section is also quite sizable.
Before the Markets section come 19 articles, of which the first four--"Just Getting Started?", "How to Use This Book...," "Before Your First Sale," and "The Business of Writing and Illustrating"--appear every year. The remaining articles cover a wide variety of subjects, such as writing query letters, how to deal with rejection, whether unknown and unagented authors can get published, and self-promotion for illustrators. Two I particularly enjoyed--though everyone will have their own favorites--were "Writing Through Rejections: Advice from Jane Yolen & Vivian Van Velde," and "When Size Matters: The Synopsis...."
After the Markets section come a variety of materials in the Resources: listings of agents and art reps; organizations, conferences, and workshops; book, magazine, and web resources; a glossary; and a useful index to the publisher listings, which enables you to find publishers by age level or subject.
Comments: As I have said before about CWIM (this quotation actually appeared on the cover of their 2003 edition): "You need a market guide with detailed information you can't find elsewhere. This book is the best available." CWIM remains the leading market guide for children's writers and illustrators with the 2004 edition. All active US children's writers and illustrators should get this guide, and should strongly consider buying a new edition every year. Yes, you could gather much of the information you'll find in it on your own, through diligent searches online, phone calls, and guideline and catalog requests to publishers. But the time spent doing that is time lost from your real work.
What an amazing resource for children's writers!.......2003-11-20
I knew that there was a lot to learn when trying to get my first children's book published and I couldn't have found a more complete source in one book. There are pointers and advice given by many published authors. There is a market section where all the publishing houses are listed along with their contact information, what types of books they publish, web addresses, submission requirements and any other relevant information for each specific company. This is an invaluable book for any aspiring children's author.
