Customer Reviews:
Lots of show, little substance.......2001-08-12
I found this book to have lots of great ideas for folding paper and putting together some cute books. But what I found lacking in the book was any real substance regarding the content of the children's books. The emphasis was clearly on the appearance of the projects, and the author had little to nothing to offer as far as how the books affected the writing level of the children, except for quantity. Quality was overlooked. I found a later book by this author much more informative. This was Literacy and the Book Arts. I bought A Book of One's Own to fill in the gaps about making some of the children's books he referred to in his later book.
Hooked on Books! (book arts to develop literacy).......2001-02-24
This book is the first of Paul Johnson's 2 books on developing writing skills in elementary school kids through book arts. The book is useful in two important ways. First, it contains a good number of easy to follow instructions for a wide range of relatively simple paper folding and paper engineering bookmaking strategies. Someone with little experience in book arts can easily make these books. For that practical aspect alone, this book is an excellent resource.
But the second reason is perhaps more important. Johnson makes persuasive arguements for integrating the act of writing with the making of books. The book structures provide creative points of departure that tap into visual and spatial modes of learning. Johnson gives sound reasons to employ such strategies in "publishing centers" found in many elementary classrooms. He gives many practical tips about what one can expect from various age-groups of kids and the degree of facilitation required by the adults in charge.
For a day to day reference and useful tool for unit and larger curriculum planning this is a gem. Johnson's second book, Literacy Through the Book Arts expands the theory dimension of A Book of One's Own. For teachers who truely want to pursue integrated curriculum strategies I highly recommend both of Johnson's books.
I have used Johnson's book to explore possibilities for both my kids' book-making projects (and facilitating projects in their elementary school classrooms) and those of my college students (I teach printmaking and book arts at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill)
Read Johnson's books and you'll be hooked!
Book Description
Go behind the curtain of one of the film world’s least understood art forms with the visual architect of 007
Who can forget the eloquence, sex appeal, and sheer luck of James Bond? The bombshells may vary, Bond might be played by Sean Connery or Roger Moore, but the style remains constant, an expectant suit of clothes simply waiting for the right actor to dive in and hoist his (shaken) martini in the air. Populated with international intrigue and riddled with gadgets, the world of Bond introduced a new kind of cinema, the look and feel of which was engineered by Ken Adam.
The mastermind behind seven of the first eleven Bond films, including Dr. No, Adam has been lauded as one of the world’s greatest production designers. First recognized during the filming of Around the World in Eighty Days, he has managed to cultivate a rapt following in one of the cinema’s most underappreciated professions, and with it a reputation for grandly expressionistic sets, such as the war room in Dr. Strangelove and Blofeld’s volcanic headquarters in You Only Live Twice. In this career-spanning series of interviews with Christopher Frayling, Adam shares the inspiration behind his work—from rebuilding eighteenth-century galleons to designing Bond’s moonbuggy—in the process revealing little-known anecdotes of a life begun in Weimar Berlin and nearly ended in World War II, only to piece itself back together and revolutionize the medium of film in its color-saturated golden age.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book. A must have for any school or studio..........2000-03-03
This book covers all the primary points of commercial art and reproduction in a clear, comprehendable manner and has lots of illustrative photos to boot. A must have for any designer.
This book explains the complexities of commercial printing........1999-06-14
This book explains the complex world of color printing and the designer's relationship to the printer in a well-organized, well-illustrated, easy-to-read style. You will find everything from trapping to common paper folds, printed examples of good halftones and bad, how to make sure things go right, but also how to compromise when things go wrong. I have made it required reading for my desktop design staff of 4. In short, this is an excellent introductory book. I strongly recommend it for both classroom teaching and less experienced designers. This few hours of reading could replace years of experience.

Customer Reviews:
The best scanner book I've seen so far........2000-11-22
I have several books on scanners and scanning, and I don't think any of them come close to matching this one in the clarity of the text and the illustrations used to make the point. The only drawback I could find was that I do wish the authors would all get together and use the same terms when talking about dpi, spi, lpi, and ppi. It makes it pretty difficult for us right-brain folks to be able to sort it all out. However, I still consider 'Make Your Scanner a Great Design Tool' to be very useful and a worthwhile investment, particularly if you are getting into doing any sort of image-tweaking for optimum results. I have recommended it to several artists who want to scan their work.
One of the Most Useful Books on My Shelf.......2000-09-22
I reference this book every time I scan a difficult photo. I think it is an excellent guide for designers, especially those working with small clients who can't afford professional photography. The book has advice on how to work with common "problem photos", which is a great help when you need to get a usable image out of a snapshot with poor lighting.
I see the other reviewer's point about too much space being taken up by discussion of various types of scanners. It would have been nice to see less about scanner types no one uses and more space devoted to techniques for improving scans. Still, the information that is there is very useful.
The information is directed at print designers, but many of the tips are useful for the Internet in a general sense. It would be nice to see specific advice for online images, but maybe that's for another book. All in all I found it a very valuable resource and have recommended it to several other designers.
Review by Scanning Basics Teacher.......2000-06-14
For four years now I have made reference to Make Your Scanner a Great Design & Production Tool, and it's previous version, in my Scanning Basics non-credit classes at a local community college. I refer to the page for finding the sweet spot on your scanner because it explains how "noise" can be introduced into a scan. That, and some other technical information, has been useful to me in preparing for my class. The target audience of the book is graphic artists/designers; I believe it meets the needs of that group. However, my classes are attended by family members doing geneologies, librarians, or small business owners who want to scan for the internet. The book does not contain enough examples geared to their needs.
May Not Be The Best For Beginners.......1999-12-31
I bought this book feeling that it would take the mystery out of scanning. It did not. The problem is that that the autor uses terminolgy that is never referenced in your run of the mill scanner manual. The author talks about SPI and other terms but my scanner manual only references dpi. This book will be a disapointment to those trying to gain some basic knowledge of how to scan.
question.......1999-11-10
I would like to know if there is a scanner out there that you can scan a letter lets say and you can change the wordings, fonts, etc. If there is any body out there that can tell me the answer please let me know.

Book Description
With more emphasis being placed on the cost and quality of new products and on reducing the lead time to develop them, attention is turning to the increasingly important topic of design for manufacturing (DFM). This involves the collaboration among research and development, manufacturing, and other company functions and is aimed at accelerating the new product development process from product conception to market introduction. A company can create a competitive advantage for itself by managing the process and its related organizational dynamics effectively. This collection of essays focuses on the development of strategic capabilities through use of DFM tools and practices, the role of DFM in specific product development phases, and the social, political, and cultural context within which DFM is introduced.
