5 out of 5 stars Nature has not always been so open-armed........1999-07-13

How then does light return to our world in the San Juan Mountains after the setting of the sun? Miraculously. Boldly. In broad stripes. It hangs like a glass cage. It is a hoop that seemingly cannot be captured.

Next moment a flash of a camera. Then an image is recorded as if earth were breathing in and out, once, twice, as if for the first time. In this camera sharp place where the only electricity is in such thunderous lightning, there are no sounds in an afternoon save the hum of a rainbow. It is so spectacular, so luminous, so fresh, that we intruders feel also quiet, intense and strangely tiptoe, as if in anticipation.

The mountains throb purple and green, and gradually the valleys below drink in red, brown and gold. Suddenly a mountain stream snatches a blue light. The earth absorbs color like a sponge, slowly drinking the mountain sun. It puts on weight; rounds itself; hangs pendent; settles and sways beneath our feet through the lens of Kathleen Norris Cook. There's no telling what a collection of such beauty, power and insight might inspire.

The Roman poet and orator Horace once wrote: "Ars longis; vitae brevis." "Art is long; life is short." There is never enough time in the San Juans to enjoy these mountains fully, yet in this volume one is able to savor it's spirit over and over. Kathleen Norris Cook is a great photographer.

5 out of 5 stars The Inquisition is alive in Chicago.......2005-04-15

In answer to Culver's review I am surprised at his effort to turn a complex time in history into a veridical, simple one. Juan de la Cruz is the proper Spanish name, not John of the Cross, and the reasons for the distinction are given in the book. To what Christianity does Culver refer, Protestant, Catholic? This was the time of the Reformation and Counter Reformation, of Catholics killing Protestants and viceversa in the name of "their" Christianity. Yes, the Saint influenced T.S Eliot, the book shows T.S. Eliot plegiarized the Saint. The reason I wrote the book and translated the Saint's prose and poetry is because the English translations I had come across were not accurate or faithful to the Saints intentions, not even to his grammatical ones. It is not often that a Castilian can translate into English, and this is my advantage, and hopefully my service to the reader. And by the way, the same Church that canonized him had the Inquisition investigating him up to the eve of his canonization together with those other Spanish mystics Teresa de Avila and Ignatius de Loyola, founder of the Jesuits.
Peace.
Antonio de Nicolas

2 out of 5 stars The writings are excellent, but the editing has an agenda.......2005-03-29

ST JOHN OF THE CROSS: Alchemist of the Soul is a collection by Antonio T. de Nicolas of writings by the 16th-century Spanish mystic, along with a brief biographical sketch.

The editing seems very amateurish and irrational. de Nicolas bitterly complains about how English-language writers call the saint St John of the Cross, asserting that Juan de la Cruz is the only option and all else is "colonizing" by the English language. A foreword is provided by Seyyed Hossein Nasr which begins by lightly praising the poetry of St John of the Cross before hijacking the foreward to laud the supposed Islamic forebears of the saint. Instead of seeing the saint as one faithful to the Christian faith, as history would suggest, the author and Nasr would rather see him as a liberator from the perceived evils of "organised religion". The same Church which canonised him is attacked as a force trying to suppress his writings and influence. This a bizzare book.

The actual writings of St John of the Cross are certainly worth reading. Fortunately, the original Castilian Spanish of the poetry is presented with an English translation on the facing page, enabling the reader with even the slightest grasp of Castilian the opportunity to see the saint's ingenious use of language. The prose consists of excepts from the Spiritual Canticle, Ascent of Mount Carmel, and Dark Night, in English translation only.

St John of the Cross is one of the greatest spiritual writers in history, with enormous influence down to our time (especially on T.S. Eliot). His writings are very highly recommended. However, I would suggest getting them through a different collection than this. The author's agenda in attacking organised religion is unpleasant, and certainly doesn't provide the edification which those attracting to the saint's work are often looking for.

5 out of 5 stars Selected life details and writing excerpts.......1998-05-01

Organized approach to life, poetry and prose tracing the spiritual journey made by St. John. Life details are summarized into a chronology. The original Spanish and English translation of famous poems such as "Dark Night" are included. The prose focuses on the Saint's explaination of the poems and omits portions written to address the Inquisition.

        Book Description

Let author MaryJoy Martin introduce you to the old-timers of San Juan County, Colorado. They are a colorful lot of characters-miners, barmaids, men in search of fortune, and brave pioneers-who have been around since the Gold Rush and are still going about their business.

During the early 1800s, people from around the world left their homelands, said goodbye to their sweethearts, and flocked to America with gold fever. Along with their belongings, the brought native folklore. Tommyknockers sprang from Cornish gripsacks. Banshees and leprechauns slipped out of Irish satchels. Poltergeists and kobolds escaped German trunks, and domoviks squeezed out of Russian apron pockets.

Some of these souls continue to search for their fortune, and others will not rest in peace until being reunited with their lost lovers from a land faraway. Tommyknockers are still working the mines up around the Old Hundred properties, watching out for the living miners and forewarning them of life-threatening cave-ins. Outside Virginius, you might hear the soul-soothing music of Scotty, a Highland piper, who was discovered frozen to death in the snow.

These tales and more from the San Juan weave a unique tapestry, matching the mystery and majesty of the mountains.

Yikes! This author is into child abuse, recommending beating little kids with objects. Dangerous advice, unless you're in the mood to get arrested. Try directing your anger on a pillow or punching bag instead. It's a lot safer than beating up your child. Try accepting normal child behavior and keep your cool.

I don't think I read the same book as the reviewer below. This book was fun summertime reading - I could barely put it down until I finished it. Ellen goes to Oddlode to sell her parent's cottage, as they've moved to Spain. She finds it in a total state of disrepair. Fate throws her with Spurs Belling, the handsome village outcast who's just returned after 10 years. The two fight their attraction for each other- Ellen because she's just coming off a long relationship and Spurs because of secrets in his past. There are also all of the eccentric village residents and Ellen's friend Pheely, who also has secrets. Fun stuff!

Very upsetting- I had looked forward to a weekend off and this book, I would have been happier working then i was, reading this book.

I just received this book last night and ended up reading it in one sitting with no distractions. I was that caught up in it! It moved me to tears! Yes! I actually cried! The author really captured the true emotions of what it's like to be a larger woman than the ideal and I caught myself nodding at it in total amazement that here was my heart described so plainly in a book! As of last night, I now have a new favorite book!

5 out of 5 stars IT GIVES ME HOPE.........2000-06-20

A WHOLE LOT OF LOVE is a beautiful story revolving what modern day society would call an "odd couple". It's sad but very, very true.

You see, Kayla is not your average sexy heroine with a to-die-for body. No, she is like many of us, beautiful in so many ways but made to feel the opposite due to her size. Granted many readers may think that a size 14 or 16 isn't very big, well, for those of us who are that size, it's definely a big deal. I for one range between 14-16 and it's definitely been a problem not only socially but emotionally. But I must say, after reading this wonderful story, I felt truly blessed. I was reminded that unquestionable love does indeed exist. That there is that one special person that will see you for what you are inside and will let that emotion reflect upon how they see you on the outside. I guess that's why I absolutely adored Ethan. He's every woman's dream come true. And you know what? He's really out there just waiting for YOU to see inside of HIM.

I cannot express enough the joy I felt after reading this book. It was truly an inspiration and motivator. But find out for yourself. Purchase it and treasure it. I know I will.

              4 out of 5 stars I feel a glom coming on!.......2000-05-28

I read mostly historical romance, with a smattering of contemporary and series romance. Most often, a series romance is like snack food for me, and not a true meal. Sorry about the food references in regards to this book, but the analogy is generally fitting. However, Justine Davis' A Whole Lot of Love, which features a handsome and brilliant executive who just so happens to be kind as well, and a woman who's been told all her life that she has "such a pretty face!", is definitely more than snack food.

This is my first book by this author, and I've already decided she's worth a glom, because she managed to create real people in this book. There's no hero who does hurtful things in a fit of pique, there's no heroine who behaves in accordance with the story as opposed to the story progressing naturally because of the characters. And, thank goodness, there's no villain or suspense sub-plot.

No, there's just two people who are more than their appearances would lead you to believe - two people who have to work through painful issues that are holding them back.

I recommend this book strongly, and hope author Davis will write a story for the heroine's best friend and another for the hero's sister. They deserve to find love too!

Layla Laraway telephones Ethan Winslow asking if he'd be willing to be auctioned off at a date auction fundraiser for Alzheimer's research. Ethan is captivated by Layla's silky, sensual voice and her equally smooth, friendly but persuasive manner.

Layla knows how it will be when Ethan sees her in person, though; it happens every time. His face will register his shock and disappointment that her body doesn't match her sexy voice. After all, she is a big woman--5' 10" and not at all thin. I picked this book up at the recommendation of Mona and others on Romance Readers Anonymous--I was so glad to finally find a romance with a large size heroine!

However, at first, I felt kind of gyped that this large size heroine was probably only a size 14, maybe 16 (numbers aren't given). To me, a size 28, that's almost as alien as a size 8! At first I felt like, "What the hell is she bitching about, she probably doesn't weigh more than 160 or maybe 175 at most!" But then I remembered how I felt back in the days when I was that size--I thought I was huge, and everyone else thought I was too, and didn't hesitate to tell me. I had boyfriends just like the jerk Layla dated, Wayne. So I got to be okay with Layla being big but not super size. However, I still feel kind of sold out that her physical fitness was so emphasized. Yes, being fit is A Very Good Thing, and certainly one needs to be fit to sail (as she and Ethan do)... but it made me feel like, okay, she's fit so that makes her being large acceptable--if she wasn't fit, she wouldn't be acceptable.

Overall I'm VERY pleased that Justine wrote this and that it got published. I know that a few years ago editors and agents felt that the market wasn't ready for a queen size heroine. I'm glad that someone big (different kind of big ;) and respected in the genre (Justine has won a few RITAs) could start pushing at the market limits and show that yes, we readers want some characters like this! It's a step in the right direction, just not as big a step as I had hoped.

I am also impressed by the cover. I usually ignore covers as best I can because the artist's renderings rarely match up with the picture I have of the characters in my mind's eye. On this one, the heroine is actually shown as described--black dress, blond hair up (tho I hope she did the front of it better than the artist did), and--gasp!--not thin! Not fat by any means, but very curvy and well-rounded. Yay!

A WHOLE LOT OF LOVE isn't just for big women, of course--it's for anyone who likes a touching story of real people, told by a master who not only gives her characters growth, but teaches the reader more about herself. I enjoyed Layla and Ethan's banter and the way they *talked* to each other (and listened!) and had a good time together. The Alzheimer's part (both Layla and Ethan work in different aspects of Alzheimer's research) was VERY well done--one scene near the end brought tears to my eyes--and I think could serve well as a guidebook of how to act and not act around people afflicted by Alzheimer's and similar conditions.

Thanks to the folks on RRA-L for the heads up on this book. Thanks to Silhouette for publishing it. And very very big thanks to Justine Davis for writing it--I think for this one you deserve another RITA.

4 out of 5 stars Good but not great.......2000-04-17

When Layla was described, I pictured someone like Kathleen Turner or Kirstie Alley. Voluptuous with a sexy voice etc... but so much of a deal was made about "how could he be with her" that it was distracting. I LOVE the idea of a heroine who is not model thin, but both Layla and Ethan seemed to have trouble with it for a while. I really liked how they had other things in their lives, interesting jobs, sailing, biking...they were interesting characters. But dump the friend Bill! What a jerk. I'd like to see more books with larger woman as heroines. This is a nice start, but I'd like to see their size be an issue to address not an overwhelming obstacle....then again I'd like to see that in real life!

5 out of 5 stars Superb for All Single Women.......2007-01-16

I LOVED this book b/c it seemed like the author was speaking directly to ME. This book is ESPECIALLY perfect for older singles: 30 and above. (Not to say that it doesn't speak to younger singles.) I'm 41 and divorced, and I found this book very encouraging; whereas, I got through approx the first 50 pages of another similar book, "What's a Girl to Do? While Waiting for Mr. Right," which was on the depressing side for me. Hardaway's "I Kissed A Lot of Frogs" doesn't prepare the reader for any "prince" or a "Mr. Right"; rather, it simply speaks to our situation of singleness and it helps the reader to be content in singleness and to maintain focus on our spiritual "prince," which is Jesus. "What's a Girl to Do?" seemed like it focused on "preparing" the reader for Mr. Right. I'm not looking to be prepared for Mr. Right, and I'm not looking for help in what to do until "Mr. Right" comes along, as "What's a Girl to Do" focuses on. Hardaway's book encouraged me to simply enjoy my singleness and not to feel like an oddball b/c I'm NOT looking for an earthly "prince" right now.

Kathleen Hardaway takes an interesting look at the choices a woman must make if she chooses to remain single and true to her religious beliefs of purity before marriage. By the time I finished reading her book, I was pretty sure I knew why she was not married. She has chosen this life, whether she is fully aware of it or not. It seems she does realize she has dedicated her life to God and yet she still seems to remain open to the possibility of marriage.

Like many women in her situation she came very close to being married, only to find her Prince changed his mind at the last minute. As a woman who went through the same situation many years ago, I can fully understand her pain and her sense of loss. At that point, she had to force herself to continue living, to continue to strive for a higher goal, a more spiritual aim, destiny itself.

Kathleen is a spiritual woman who desires God's blessing on her life and her book will encourage women who want to follow a similar path. After reading numerous books about the single woman, written by men, it was refreshing to read about a woman who was willing to sacrifice her sexuality in order to love God and follow biblical teachings.

I think Kathleen has made a very difficult choice and I hope she is rewarded and eventually finds the man of her dreams. There are men out there who will respect her choices, although they may be few and far between. I think there is a way to be sensual and spiritual and it is definitely a balancing act. Most of us don't have enough self-control to remain single and celibate and if you are struggling with these issues, this book will give you spiritual guidance and advice on how to remain pure until you marry.

I so loved reading this book. This is one of the few that I'm going to hang onto even after the last page has been read...I have a feeling it's one I'll be reading again (and again). While Kathleen Hardaway expresses the deep pain and anguish she has felt in the past about being single, in the latter chapters of the book she goes on to describe how she feels that God has blessed her with singleness (me too!). Her emotions are quite palpable, and if you really give yourself to the content of the book, you will find yourself crying and rejoicing right along with her, because so many of us have those same feelings, and she expresses them so well. I agree with one of the other reviewers who felt that Ms. Hardaway could have expanded this book to include proper responses to those snide and hurtful comments made by some. As a single mother, I also wish she would have touched more on the issues that I, and those like me, deal with (although what she did include was very helpful and encouraging). However, as it stands, this is a wonderful book, a very easy and possibly life-changing read. Thank you Kathleen!!

I Kissed A Lot Of Frogs: But the Prince Hasn't Come completely changed my perception of my own singleness. I found myself in every chapter of the book. Some parts made me laugh while others brought me to tears. I could relate to every disappointment, every hurt, and every doubt. Being a single
woman in my late 20's, I do often wonder what is wrong with me or why God hasn't sent me a husband, as I am sure many other single women often wonder. Growing up in a Christian home and church family, I have always been told that God will give you the desires of your heart if you just ask Him. Well,
my desire is to be a wife and mother, but I often feel very discouraged that God doesn't have the same plans for my life. After reading this book, I finally realize that it isn't about me at all; it is all about Him. I have been distracted by my wants/desires, and I have taken my focus off of Him. It is difficult to wait on the Lord, but after reading this book, I have decided to trust His timing and serve Him faithfully in my singleness. And as I do wait, although not always patiently, for my earthly prince to one day sweep me off of my feet (that is still my heart's desire), I anticipate even more the return of my Heavenly Prince who in all of His glory, will one day look into my eyes and say, "Well done my child."

I Kissed a Lot of Frogs but the Prince Hasn't Come is one of the best books I've read for single women. The author shares real life stories that all women can relate to. She conveys her own struggles of singleness but also calls the reader to live life with a passion regardless of marital status. Singles and those who minister to/with singles can benefit from the insights in this book. There are waiting periods in everyone's life. How great to know life is worth living because the True Prince is coming- Jesus Christ! I plan to buy several copies for friends and for my church library.

Vondell Prince's collection of short stories expresses her vivid imagination of true and fictional characters using humor to its fullest. Her first work, Life Is Too Short For Long Stories: Light-hearted Tales of Sex, Love and Life and Lots of Humor is a hilarious view of clippings from life. Good reading for the heart, the soul and laughing out loud.

"Mullgillicutty Sisters" captures the essence of delightful scenarios of three sisters shopping around for the perfect man. Clotilda tiptoes into a romance that quickly turns into a sad love song, while Wilmeda experiences the thrill of her life and Lou Ann seductively tells her man that she hopes he is wearing black draws for their tryst.

In "Replaced by two "C" Batteries" Grace tells Tom that what she has will whiten his teeth and freshen his breath.

"Never Underestimate a Woman with Plans" immerses the reader in the exploits of that "infamous couple" after having been expelled from Eden and their special son a "chip off the old ass-kicking block".

Discover in Life Is Too Short For Long Stories: Light-hearted Tales of Sex, Love, Life and Lots of Humor reflections of the lighter side of life.

I have read this book once and have attempted to read it several times again and I have found that once was enough for me. I am going through a love hate relationship with Fiona WALKER. A couple of her books are fantastic then theres one like this, ho hum. I like Fiona WALKER because she doesn't fill the book up with smut and usually has good story lines. This has a O.K story line, (not great) and the characters are not particularily interesting. For reading at bedtime to put you to sleep it is not going to keep you awake with anticipation and excitement

Lots of Love and a Spanking! is a disciplnie plan for children using the old-fashioned method of spanking to teach obedience and respect. But spanking with a difference! Not the screaming, red-faced, violent beating that many people imagine when they hear the word; but "a few hard whacks on the bottom, given by a calm parent, followed by a loving talk explaining how much the child is loved, why he got a spanking, and how to avoid getting one in the future." This book explains why current discipline philosophies are not producing polite, obedient and cheerful children, and that our entire country is seeing the results of those inadequate discipline methods. This book combines the "firm hand" approach of our forefathers with the self-esteem and anti-violence concerns of today. A one-of-a-kind book!

                  Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars From my perspective..........2007-07-19

I have suffered severely at the hands of people like this author... who believe in spanking as a solution to every problem. Parents like these are completely unaware of the effects they have on their small, trusting little children when they spank them as a first, second, and last resort to every behavior. The severity, frequency, and motivation of these spankings (which this author is encouraging) can have a brutal, irreparable effect mentally and physically on a child.

I have researched this topic for months, from Discipline Without Shouting or Spanking: Practical Solutions to the Most Common Preschool Behavior Problems to Spanking: A Loving Discipline : Helpful and Practical Answers for Today's Parents, and everything in between, trying to find out if there is a way to raise a happy, healthy, well-balanced child while using spanking as a discipline.

From my perspective as a still-recovering victim of this woman's type of teachings, I have decided for myself that spanking a child is not cruel or abusive, and can produce normal, happy children. HOWEVER- IT MUST BE DONE IN MODERATION, AND ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS IN LOVE. I cannot stress this enough. If you grab a child by the arm, spin him around, and smack him until he wails in terror, you have GONE TOO FAR. Comparatively, the long, drawn-out, painful spanking rituals, processes, and steps that this author condones are not healthy, and are certainly not loving! Her methods intend only to force a child to behave through violent force and use fear of pain to control their every behavior. Parents should never, never, never, never spank their child in anger.

There are healthy middle grounds to this type of discipline. And, in contrast to what this author believes, spanking is not about the pain of the punishment. More pain does NOT mean better behavior.

Finally, I must stress that one of the biggest factors that contributed to my own suffering was the horrible idea that the child must be stripped bare from the waist down in order to what... feel the spanking? The only thing that this will do to a child is cause unnecessary humiliation and shame. The only time a parent should force their child to remove their clothes is when they are very young, and desperately need a bath. Even a child has rights to the boundaries of their own bodies... and to intentionally violate these boundaries and force them to expose themselves for punishment is very simply not conducive to a healthy child. This sort of spanking practice will leave a child feeling helpless and violated, unable to defend or protect themselves from their physically stronger parents.

I am seventeen years old. I have never written anything so difficult in my life, but I have written it in hopes that it will spare even a couple of children from the harmful effects of the type of spanking that this author condones.

                  5 out of 5 stars It works.......2006-11-29

Corporal punishment has been used as a discplinary tool for millenia. There's no reason to think it stopped working all of a sudden. My son is 10 and my daughter is 12 and they talk back to neither me or my husband. The fact is that the presence of a paddle in our household keeps our kids mindful of consequences. A sore backside isn't the end of the world.

1 out of 5 stars the heroine rides in with the paddle.......2006-06-20

Once again, yet another "fundamentalist supermom"-- paddle in hand,
rides in to save the day from bratty, horrible kids.
At least this author is not a former child actress, and at least
she has the courage to use the word "spanking" rather than the standard fundamentalist euphemism "discipline."
When are all of these fundamentalists going to realize that they are damaging the cause of Christ with all of this thinly veiled S&M stuff? Eegads!!!

                  1 out of 5 stars A lot of crap.......2006-05-10

I grew up being spanked on the bottom with the hand exactaly 3 times and i turned out okay. I luckly live in Germany, were spanking i totally forbidden since 2000 (good thing, even thought i don't find hand spanks so bad). Anyone who spanks their children with a ruler, paddle or wooden spoon is crazy to me! Whenever something else than the hand is used it isn't spanking anymore (to me) it's child abuse.

1 out of 5 stars Beat up little children.......2006-01-03

Good grief, what a stupid book! Unless you want to create aggressive offspring, who turn into messed-up adults inclined to BDSM.

Normal people don't feel the need to beat up little children with a "ruler, wooden spoon, or small paddle" like Pritchett does. Pritchett is an uneducated moron who shouldn't be writing books about children.
