if you are looking for books; you need this.......2007-07-09
There are a lot of book collectors who invest time in garage sales, estate sales, etc. to find something else for their own personal library. Everyone (yes, everyone) really thinks they will find a signed first edition in the 50 cent bin. Not likely, but this book is small enough for pocket or purse to check quickly a book that just may come close to the prize you are after. Well, worth the investment.
If you really want to make sure it is a first edition hard cover.......2006-12-30
Anyone seriously, or casually, collecting books should have a copy of the Pocket Guide to the Identification of First Editions by Bill McBride with them whenever they are on a book hunt. This little book has more information, organized by publisher, about first editions than any other book I have used.
Whenever someone asks me questions about editions, print runs, or how to identify a BCE (Book Club Edition) after answering I recommend the consider purchasing this guide. I have had every edition since the 3rd and would not be without it.
A Pocket Guide to the Identification of First Editions.......2006-03-30
I think Books and a Mission are in the shipping business instead of the book business. $3.49 charge to ship a 3"X 5" 1/4" thick pamphlet?
And this is an expert?.......2005-05-30
I keep running into Booksellers, Book Collectors saying "But McBride's Books Say". Please take all and any information with a grain of salt, when some of the information are just what others are saying. There are mistakes with all EXPERTS, remember the Earth is round not flat. Do research of your own, most(99.5%) of the correct information is available for free, the rest is theory. Keep that in mind.
TOO BAD THERE'S NOT A ZERO STAR RATING!!!.......2004-12-31
This is NOT a book!! It is a fold of about 25 half-size pages stapled in the center with a cover of card stock printed in black. The information was totally ho-hum. Common sense and an IQ of more than 20 will give you the same information with a quick look at the front of any book. Then there's the cost!!!!! $15.95 plus $3.49 shipping. The book would have easily fit into a #10 business envelope and shipped for forty cents. Needless to say I returned it ASAP.

If you are a serious collector or serious seller, you need this book. It truly is THE bible of identification of 1st/1st's. Worth every penny.
First Editions: A Guide to Identification.......2006-03-29
I purchased this book for me and one for a friend. Once I spent time and learned how to use this reference it is the most comprehensive reference book on first editions. It is a wonderful addition to your collection in assisting you in identifying first edition books. I am glad I purchased this book.
Bible of First Edition Identification: Accept No Substitute!.......2004-01-26
This is the standard reference for first edition identification in the used book world. McBride guides paraphrase Zempel and cannot possibly be better because the Zempel guide reprints information obtained directly from the publisher. To quote from the Introduction, "Every statement, however, was prepared with the full cooperation and participation of the publisher." Unless it is believed that publishers want to intentionally mislead readers, this is the best possible guide to identifying firsts.
The guide is very easy to use. Publishers are listed alphabetically and their method of identifying first editions organized by year. Publishers change their practices over the years, so a Scribner first edition from 1924 will look different on the copyright page than a first from 1935. There is also an incredibly useful section on identifying book club editions which would solve many problems in identification, particularly in the cesspool of errors known as eBay. This book is built upon a guide to identifying firsts which originally appeared in 1928, using the same methods. The quality, quantity, pedigree and specificity of the information is second to none and there is no substitute for this book.
This is a reference book for the office, so the McBride guides would be a decent supplement for hitting the road. Also, this relates the practices of the publisher as obtained from the publisher, so this book will not give you points (book term for specific oddities about a particular book edition) on printing errors or on separating issues of a dustcover. For that kind of info, you need a specific bibliography such as provided by the Ahearns or the FPAA by Bruccoli.
If you are in the book world and do not have this book, you are an amateur regardless of sales volume. This is where first editions are defined, so pick it up or risk returns and ridicule from savvy collectors. Better yet, quiz your bookseller to see if they are ignorant or informed about identifying firsts.
Format.......2000-03-28
While I was grateful for this book and the information contained therein, I found that the format is a bit confusing at first because of the format. Once I became proficient at using, I found it invaluable in my book-collecting.

Official Price Guide to Books, 5th Edition (Official Price Guide to Books)
ASIN: 0965342921 |
From the Publisher
Here, for the first time, is a book dedicated to helping the serious collector of first-edition fiction. Written by the owner of The Book Emporium, a nationally recognized book business specializing in providing high-quality, first-edition fiction to a highly discriminating clientele, this book is a complete How-To for both the beginning and the advanced collector. Information previously confined to the author's reference file cabinet is now professionally compiled to provide:
* description of terms commonly used by book dealers and collectors,
* in-depth discussion of grading and the effect of defects on grade,
* first edition points for today's most collected first editions,
* tabulation of values for six different grades of book and dustjacket,
* description of first issue dustjackets.
This is not merely a printout of auction sales or catalog prices. This is a price guide (the previous editions of which were offered for sale only to used and rare book dealers) that tells how to identify first editions and what they are worth.

I have no compaints.......2003-10-05
In spite of the negative reviews, this book is just what I was looking for regarding first editions. I have an earlier edition of the Ahearn's book and that was a waste of money.
Talk about a limited scope!.......2002-04-19
I'm not sure exactly how this guy came up with his criteria for what to include in this book and what to leave out. There is no Kurt Vonnegut, no Toni Morrison, no Saul Bellow, and no J.D. Salinger. Morrison and Bellow are both Nobel laureates in "20th century fiction"! And Salinger's first edition of Catcher in the Rye is probably one of the most sought-after books in this category. On top of this, the book is full of editorial errors. Not worth the trouble.
this book (...).......2001-12-12
a very shoddy and error-filled attempt at a reference manual for modern firsts. has peter benchley, but not james ellroy, dean koontz, but not dennis lehane, micheal dorris, but not robert crais. a waste of money.
OK, but............2001-07-12
Some useful info but it's absurd that this is a "2000 edition" and covers books up to about 1993! What did he do when he updated this book, close his door and stay inside from 1993 to 1999 writing this book, ignoring any books written after 1993? Weird.
What boggles my mind is how few books there are on pricing and grading first edition books, and the ones that do exist are not very good, including Aherns. Why can't someone come out with a decent one like they do for comic books (Overstreet, etc)?
MISLEADING!.......2001-05-12
Mr. Lee, at least in the brand new 2001 Edition (and I can only assume that this edition would be an improvement over the 2000 edition), pays little or no attention to British Editions, especially when he's considering British authors.
The first three entries in this new edition are Douglas Adams, Eric Ambler and Jeffrey Archer, all British, and in each case he either disregards the TRUE First Edition (British) or lists the American Edition first. By listing the American Edition before the correct British Edition he implies that the US is the true first. THAT is not only dispensing inaccurate information, but for beginning collectors, misleading information.
I am not certain if this was an oversight, or if it was done deliberately. The reason I say that is that perhaps Mr. Lee wants to sell his own American Editions and by listing them first in the guide, he fools neophyte collectors into believing that a Simon and Schuster Edition of Jeffrey Archer's best book, "Kane and Abel" is the only appearance of that book. That the Hodder and Stoughton TRUE First Edition doesn't exist.
That attitude is irresponsible.

Customer Reviews:
A worthwhile buy.......2003-05-01
The first time I saw this publication was on a book fair in São Paulo and I found it amazing from the very first moment. I bought it from Amazon some weeks later and it really paid its value.
It covers the story behind each building that have become world famous landmarks.
You can go directly to a specific building you're interested in or read it throughly from beginning to end. Both ways you'll be pleased and surprised with the information provided.
The only thing that disappointed me was the very little coverage on South American landcaspes such as Machu Pich ruins Oscar Nyemeyer's Brasília
However, it's an excelente book anyway. If you do appreciate good architecture, you won't regret buying it.
Needs a Second Edition.......2000-04-02
I was enthralled in the book. Buildings that Changed the World is a spectacular photographic adventure. For anyone that loves history and architecture it is a fantastic book to look at. Reading, however, is different. The author, understandably, has little room to explore the different intrigues of every building. There are fantastic stories to some of these buildings that are not mentioned. Again, I do understand the limited space but I would love to see a second edition to this book that goes into the buildings more in depth. The author uses the Kremlin as a whole but, I believe that the buildings individually should have been addressed. Specifically, St. Basil's Cathedral which has a fantastic history of construction under Ivan the Terrible.

Book Description
Whether they span rivers or harbors, cultures or countries, bridges have long been a symbol of man's ingenuity, perseverance, and thirst for exploration. Starting with ancient bridges built by the Mongol and Roman Empires through future bridges that exist only in blueprints, this newest addition to Prestel's highly successful "Changed the World" series travels the globe to examine fifty of the world's most important bridges and the history, legends, and people behind them.
In stunning two-page spreads filled with photographs, plans, drawings, and accessible, informative text, this colorful architectural and historical journey explains why bridges continue to fascinate us, both as examples of engineering genius and artistic vision. It reveals little-known facts that deepen our appreciation of the science and technology of bridge-building, introduces historic events in which bridges have played a central role, and offers surprising reexaminations of some of the world's most familiar bridges. From the glory of the Golden Gate to the grace of the Ponte Vecchio, the imposing presence of London's Tower Bridge to a stone structure in Afghanistan's Quala Panji that is still used today, Bridges That Changed the World is a celebration of our steadfast desire to connect with and discover the world around us.

Fascinating book with great info and pictures.......2007-04-01
I bought this book for my son who is almost 5. He is fascinated by bridges. So I got this book for him and he loves it. It has some really unique bridges with great pictures. (He likes it mostly for all of the pictures, but he will ask what country they are from, etc). I also find it interesting because they have detailed descriptions regarding the bridges.
So this is a great book, even if you have never had interest in bridges. Kids like it too!
A satisfying blend of striking photos and technical detail blended in with a history of bridge-building around the world.......2005-12-03
Over fifty famous bridges and their stories are gathered in a survey which will appeal to a far wider audience than the usual specialty bridge book. Here is a satisfying blend of striking photos and technical detail blended in with a history of bridge-building around the world. The real surprise lies in a lively writing style paired with discussions of bridges in regions which usually don't receive much mention, such as a sand-cast iron bridge in Coalbrookdale from the 1700s or the 1800s Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol.

Good Inspiration material.......2007-08-23
I don't often rate items here on Amazon but I felt it necessary after reading some of the reviews here. A number of critics have blasted the recording because of the "boring narrator." Which narrator are you talking about? The one that reads the first 2 books or the other 3 narrators? I am only on book 7 (out of 8) but so far there seems to be a total of 4 narrators.
It seems obvious that the critics never got past the first 2 books. Furthermore, I found his voice pleasant enough and did not feel as if I was being put to sleep. These books are classics with a lot of heady ideas. Personally I feel that some people are just not ready to accept these ideas and so thier minds rebel and force them to do things like go to sleep...
Not just one, but 9 great classics on achieving financial success!.......2007-06-28
Everyone deserves to be rich...this outstanding collection of motivational classics takes the mystery out of prosperity and teaches listeners how to achieve the riches they deserve. It's a collection that has enriched millions over the years. It's interesting, motivating, and I highly recommend it!
Good, but old advice.......2006-11-04
Its a lot of old advice that is good to hear, again.
I recommend this collection........2006-04-24
The material in these collection is like finding lost wisdom.
Great content, I think the readers are in sync with the writing style. which is very old world - it was a glimpse into the distant past and the stories remain true today.
Great books, not so great in THIS format.......2006-04-10
I must agree with other reviewers that the narrator is a great person to listen to if you need to get to sleep! Great information, poor narration.
