    Book Description

Insect Sampling in Forest Ecosystems highlights the problems faced by entomologists working in forest ecosystems. It suggests ways in which their methodology can be modified so as to be understood by ecologists and become accepted within the general fields of ecology and entomology.Insect sampling, although firmly based on standard ecological census techniques, presents special problems that are not faced by other ecologists. With the small size, varied life cycles, rapid rates of increase, and ingenious adaptations to habitats of insects, ecological entomologists face problems that are somewhat different to those faced by vertebrate or plant ecologists. Furthermore, forest ecosystems, whether natural or manmade, present special problems to the ecologists working beneath their canopies. This book will be essential reading for advanced students and researchers as well as teachers across the whole spectrum of education.

Garhwal, boasting the four sources of the Ganges River in northern India, must qualify as one of the most sacred stretches of land in the world, and novelist Stephen Alter transports us there in his travelogue Sacred Waters. Countless pilgrims make the same trip every year, but whereas they now travel by bus, Alter does it the old-fashioned way, trekking to each of the headwaters on foot. Since this is also Alter's birthplace and childhood stomping grounds, we couldn't ask for a better guide. He knows each species of plant, bird, and beast by name and tells the grand tales of Hindu mythology associated with the ancient terrain. Fluent in the local languages, he also makes us privy to his chats with pot-smoking sadhus, greedy Brahmins, simple nomads, and pilgrims that he meets along the way. Although Alter has the tendency to slip into the emotionless detachment of a journalist in his descriptions, there remains enough wonder at the power of the natural landscape and color in the fantastic myths to make Sacred Waters a trek worth taking. --Brian Bruya

      Book Description

This is an account of a journey taken in India. The destination is the source of the Ganges, the holy and most famous of Indian rivers. It is a physical journey, involving train rides across the vast plains and passages on foot far into snow-covered valleys and mountains. It is also a spiritual journey, taking a man deep into the heart and soul of the ancient religious culture of India.

Stephen Alter, who was born in the Himalayan foothills, crosses many miles, and several millennia, to search for the source of Indian religion. Along the way, as he reaches one holy spot after another, meeting grounds for pilgrims, remote towns, and forgotten temples, he delves into the myths and traditions of an antique land. He explores the tales of heroic derring-do, evil and good, and recounts the great stories of death, warfare, passions, and sacred wisdom that animate the vibrant history and religious traditions of India. As every pilgrim learns, a spiritual search involves travel but ultimately returns to the inner self. Sacred Waters is a richly told narrative of a beautiful land and of a man's interior journey, and is for readers everywhere who seek to plumb their own spiritual sources.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Introduction to River Ganga.......2004-07-14

Surprisingly, there exist very few good books on the rich myths, and natural history of the hill districts of Garhwal and Kumaon. Till date probably the best known figure from the region is Jim Corbett of the "Man Eaters of Kumaon" fame.

Stephen Alter's latest book titled, "Sacred Waters," is a beautifully written narrative of his journey to the sources of River Ganga (or Ganges) in the Garhwal Himalayas. For the Hindus, the Ganga is a sacred river.

Alter's book is a welcome addition to the few goods books that exist about this region. The book is a wonderful introduction to understanding the history of the region, and the central place the River Ganga occupies for many Indians.

The book is an interesting mix of natural history, myths and Alter's own personal experience of River Ganga, whose source is hidden in the beautiful and rugged mountains of Garhwal, often called as "Dev Bhoomi," - the land of the gods. Alter paints a fascinating picture of the changing moods and nature of the river as it bursts from the mountains and courses down to the dusty Gangetic plains, and into the ocean.

Alter is a second generation Pahari-American, who was born and brought up in the hills of Uttaranchal. Pahari means someone from the mountain in Hindi.

      5 out of 5 stars Sacred Travel.......2001-10-29

Stephen Alter's marvelous book is reminiscent of fine nineteenth century travel writing in which the writer, in lucid, and sometimes poetic, style brings the reader with him to see and experience things most people never would otherwise. His credentials are impeccable: the son of missionaries who was raised in northern India, fluent in Hindi and conversant in other Indian languages and possessed of an encyclopedic knowledge of the flora and fauna of the region. A non believer, he traces the steps of an ancient pilgrimage, feeling the spiritual attraction of the place while wryly commenting on the religious hypocrisy he encounters along the way. For all of its gifts it is the writing that commends this fine book. For the author's wise and seasoned view of the world and understatement of the rigors of his journey I would compare it to Bruce Chatwin's, In Patagonia.

      Book Description

A moving and emotional story about one girl's adoption

While growing up in an Indian orphanage, Asha Miró dreamed of someday being adopted. Her wish finally came true, but only at the misfortune of another. When Asha was six, a Catalan family was in the process of adopting twins but one of the children suddenly fell ill and died. This twist of fate led the family to adopt Asha instead. Leaving a life of poverty behind, Asha was given a second chance.

Twenty-one years later, Asha takes a heart-wrenching trip back to India to uncover her native roots. Full of unexpected encounters, this adventure informs and touches Asha beyond her expectations. She visits her old orphanage, speaks with her former caretakers, explores the land that she might not have ever left, and comes to form a more solid identity. Yet one trip is not enough. Eight years later she returns. This time she journeys to the small rural village where she was born. As well as uncovering the details behind her adoption, she finds the only living member of her immediate Indian family: a sister she never knew she had.

4 out of 5 stars Warm Reading About Adoption.......2007-08-29

With the proliferation of books about adoption and adoptees on the market Asha Miro's story of retracing her roots in India will seem familiar.

However, what was truly wonderful about this book was Asha's gentle touch. Bitterness does not overtake this book.
There is so much love in this book. Usually, nuns in orphanages are portrayed as mean and cruel. Not so in this book. Instead, you find a group of women doing the best they can for Indian orphans with extremely limited resources. Usually, parents who give their children up in other countries are portrayed at best as pitiful and at worst as little more than savages. Definitely not so with this book.
Asha meets up with her biological family. It is a joyful reunion. By the time she finishes reconstructing why her family gave her up, and also her biological sister's life, her family feels about as exotic as people down the street.
And you understand why they did it. You're rather left with the feeling that you would have done the same in that situation.
I found Asha's portrait of her biological sister fascinating, and I kept thinking about it afterward.

      5 out of 5 stars A bestseller in Spain.......2006-04-10

This is lovely book about a woman now in her late 30's, adopted at the age of 6 by a Catalan couple, searching for her birth family in India. Very sensitively written, with great respect both for her adoptive parents (entries from her adoptive mother's journal form a part of the book) and her birth parents, about whom she discovers a great deal. A must for all adoptive families and recommended for anyone interested in Indian culture. This book was a huge bestseller in Spain and documentaries and a followup book have also been written by Ms. Miro. I have not read the English version; I hope it does the book justice.

        Book Description

A collection of new and previously-published essays that sheds light on the intersections between psychoanalysis and Indic Studies.

While Indian academics and clinicians have been familiar with psychoanalysis for many decades, they have kept this Western model of the mind separate from the spiritual and philosophical traditions of their own country. Freud Along the Ganges bridges this important lacuna in psychoanalytic and Indic studies by creating a new theoretical field where human motives are approached not only psychoanalytically but also from the perspective of the teachings of Buddha, Tagore, Gandhi, and Salman Rushdie. The authors of this collection show how the insights of these Indian masters give a new force to the Freudian discovery by providing a basis to better understand the social and psychological Indian makeup.

The book begins by questioning the applicability of the psychoanalytic method to non-Western cultures. It then traces the history of the psychoanalytic movement in India from its onset while it emphasizes the intricate overlap between Indian existential and mystical traditions and psychoanalysis. Freud Along the Ganges offers a unique study of the ways that Indian thought and psychoanalysis illuminate and enrich each other.

          5 out of 5 stars A Timeless Classic.......2004-03-25

These are recipes you won't find anywhere else. This is a cookbook you will take down again and again. Malvi Doshi writes concisely and in an easy to follow manner from the novice to the expert. I had the good fortune to frequent her restaurant, "The Ganges" when she had it. Alais, there are only two ways to get her cullinary expertise now, live in the Berkley area and attend a class, or this cookbook. Her original cookbook, "The Ganges" while out of print remains a well loved (if not food smeared) classic.
I personally stopped "collecting" cookbooks with the advent of web based recipe searches, but this book, this book, is more than something to hold a distinguished place on any fine cooks shelf. This book is one to be used and treasured for a lifetime.
Thank you, Mrs. Doshi for your wisdom and guidance. I have waited along time for more of your wonderful, mouth-watering recipes!

          5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2003-10-08

I consider myself a very experienced amateur cook, with special interest in Asian and Indian cooking. Although I'm not a vegetarian (too many tasty meat dishes to give up), I bought this book based on friends and acquaintences ravings about Ms. Doshi's former restaurant in San Francisco.

I have not been disappointed. Unlike most other Indian cookbooks, this one specializes in a relatively unknown regional cuisine of Gujurat. There are many recipes I have not found in other books. Despite the relative obscurity of these recipes, the book manages to describe them very thoroughly and all the recipes I have tried thus far have been fairly easy to follow. An added plus is that minimal oil is used so this book would be very good for the health conscious.

In summary, the strengths of this book are the great number diversity of recipes, excellant writing, thoroughness of descriptions, and inclusion of relatively hard to find recipes. The only major weakness is the paucity of illustrations. I would highly recommend this cookbook to Indian cuisine afficianados who want to learn more about Indian cooking beyond the usual curries and tandoori dishes.

5 out of 5 stars a super resource for vegetarian Indian cuisine.......2003-09-07

I have been using this book for over 2 months and I can't express in words how much I've enjoyed it. A good friend of mine, who used to live in San Francisco and was a regular customer at The Ganges restaurant, recommended purchasing any cookbook written by Malvi Doshi. I'm new to Indian cooking so I was a bit intimidated by Indian cooking with all its spices. However, this book is very easy to followed and detailed so that I felt at ease, even as a beginner, in preparing these meals. There are tons of recipes, many of which I have never heard of or tasted at any Indian restaurant. Evertime I have cooked meals from this book for a dinner party, my dinner guests have been very impressed by the tastiness and uniqueness of the meals. I consider this cookbook one of the best I have ever owned.

5 out of 5 stars Great authentic recipes.......2003-01-18

Compared to most Indian cook books, I would rate this very highly. I've been waiting to purchase this book based on reviews I've read of Ms. Doshi's other cookbook, which is no longer available. This new book is quite long, with many recipes so I haven't been able to try many of them yet. However, the recipes that I have attempted thus far have been great. Much of the recipes are unique and cooking instructions are very easy to follow. The only criticisms I would have is that, because of its size and dimensions, it does not easily lend itself to cooking while following the instructions--it's hard to keep the pages open--and the book could have benefited from more illustrations. Otherwise, this is a first rate cookbook.

5 out of 5 stars The last Indian Cookbook I Will Ever Need to Buy.......2003-01-10

A vegetarian who grew up in India, but who never really mastered Indian cooking (I was what Americans would call a "military brat") I find this book to be absolutely essential. The recipes I've tried thus far -- my favorites being the Biryani (spicy rice with yogurt) and the 'Gulab Jaman' dessert (rose-flavored dumplings) -- have yielded dishes that remind me of the best meals that I enjoyed in India, when I last lived there.

In addition to the hundreds of scrumptuous, majority low-fat recipes in this book, I particularly appreciate Chef Doshi's attention to detail in explaining procedures and ingredients. Chef's Doshi's knowledge is vast, and the wonderful stories with which she embellishes her text are an added delight.
Highly recommended for novice and advanced cooks alike!

          Book Description

In this rich ethnographic study, Kelly D. Alley sheds light on debates about water uses, wastewater management, and the meanings of waste and sacred power. On the Banks of the Ganga analyzes the human predicaments that result from the accumulation and disposal of waste by tracing how citizens of India interpret the impact of wastewater flows on a sacred river and on their own cultural practices.
Alley investigates ethno-semantic, discursive, and institutional data to flesh out the interplay between religious, scientific, and official discourses about the river Ganga. Using a new outward layering methodology, she points out that anthropological analysis must separate the historical and discursive strands of the debates concerning waste and sacred purity in order to reveal the cultural complexities that surround the Ganga. Ultimately, she addresses a deeply rooted cultural paradox: if the Ganga river is considered sacred by Hindus across India, then why do the people allow it to become polluted?
Examining areas of contemporary concern such as water usage and urban waste management in the most populated river basin in the world, this book will appeal to anthropologists and readers in religious, environmental, and Asian studies, as well as geography and law.
Kelly D. Alley is Associate Professor and Director of Anthropology at Auburn University. In addition to being a prolific writer, she has conducted research on public culture and environmental issues in northern India for over a decade. Alley is currently overseeing a project to ameliorate river pollution problems in India.

          Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Colonial agenda and biases..........2006-01-30

Chapter 6 of this book mentions that British authorities in colonial times criticized Hindus for their superstitions which lead to pollution in Ganga. And yet throughout the book Ms Kelley D. Alley has done precisely the same what British did. The book severely lacks the balanced outlook. How Hindu leaders have utlized Hinduism to save the ecology.

Another, major drawback of the book is it fails to give a picture of how much pollution is actually done by industries around Ganga, which have nothing to do with Hindu beliefs.

A better approach would have been a balanced perspective showing how industries are polluting Ganga in a major way (and Hindu immersions in a minor way). And yet Hindu leaders such as Veer Bhadra Mishra, are one of the Hindu voices who are working hard to save Ganga.

            Product Description

The River Ganges has a thousand names. Hindu priests regard it as a sin to call her a river at all. She is a goddess, the source of the world, her waters holy and healing and still sold to Hindus all over the world. Ilija Trojanow travelled along the Ganges, from the source, where it breaks free from the eternal ice in the Himalayas, to the great cities, by boat, by bus, on overcrowded trains. He visited the great Hindu festivals and talked to those who warn of ecological disasters resulting from gigantic dams. His colorful report describes a country between ancient traditions and astonishing modernity and the holy river that crosses it for hundreds of miles.
