In the Shadow of Revolution

Book Description
Asked shortly after the revolution about how she viewed the new government, Tatiana Varsher replied, "With the wide-open eyes of a historian." Her countrywoman, Zinaida Zhemchuzhnaia, expressed a similar need to take note: "I want to write about the way those events were perceived and reflected in the humble and distant corner of Russia that was the Cossack town of Korenovskaia." What these women witnessed and experienced, and what they were moved to describe, is part of the extraordinary portrait of life in revolutionary Russia presented in this book. A collection of life stories of Russian women in the first half of the twentieth century, In the Shadow of Revolution brings together the testimony of Soviet citizens and émigrés, intellectuals of aristocratic birth and Soviet milkmaids, housewives and engineers, Bolshevik activists and dedicated opponents of the Soviet regime. In literary memoirs, oral interviews, personal dossiers, public speeches, and letters to the editor, these women document their diverse experience of the upheavals that reshaped Russia in the first half of this century.
As is characteristic of twentieth-century Russian women's autobiographies, these life stories take their structure not so much from private events like childbirth or marriage as from great public events. Accordingly the collection is structured around the events these women see as touchstones: the Revolution of 1917 and the Civil War of 1918-20; the switch to the New Economic Policy in the 1920s and collectivization; and the Stalinist society of the 1930s, including the Great Terror. Edited by two preeminent historians of Russia and the Soviet Union, the volume includes introductions that investigate the social historical context of these women's lives as well as the structure of their autobiographical narratives.

Inessa Armand: Revolutionary and Feminist
R. C. Elwood Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0521894212 |
Book Description
Inessa Armand was born of French-English parents in Paris in 1874, raised in the family of a wealthy Moscovite manufacturer, and buried at the age of 46 next to the walls of the Kremlin. In this biography, Professor R. C. Ellwood explores her relatively short life as a Tolstoyan, a lady philanthropist interested in rehabilitating prostitutes, an underground propagandist arrested five times by the tsarist police, an important Bolshevik organizer in Western Europe before the revolution, and a leading Soviet feminist from 1917 to 1920. Armand's unique life is made even more interesting by her close friendship with Lenin and this study examines their stormy relations, casting doubt on the conventional wisdom of an extended love affair.

Selected full alphabets and letterforms are presented with text on their origins and analog or digital evolution, and work produced by a wide range of designers shows how these typographic forms are applied. The authors then assess how these forms will continue to evolve.

Experimental Layout (Design Fundamentals)
Ian Noble , and Russell Bestley Manufacturer: Rotovision ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 2880466105 |
Book Description
This is a study of contemporary experimental approaches to layout - the essence of graphic design. At the heart of Experimental Layout is the sheer breadth of the discipline of graphic design, its adjustments and accommodation, the innovators and their idiosyncrasies. The theories behind contemporary graphic design are explained by the authors in essays (`Spatial Dynamics', `Form Follows Content' and `Words and Pictures') which provide insights into current debates and the context within which experimental designers work. Interviews with Mark Pawson, Peter Willberg and Ian Warner reveal the processes behind the work, the intentions and motivations.
Ian Noble and Russell Bestley have selected work from around the world which they believe is united in its concern to try different and challenging approaches, not for the sake of being different but because it is grounded in difference. Diaries, magazines, exhibition catalogs and books are among the work included in Experimental Layout. Projects range from rarely-seen personal projects to large-scale commercial work. In each case, the work questions or extends the boundaries of graphic design.
