Great.......2006-01-17
Jim R. McClellan has done students a great service in publishing 100s of primary sources and secondary sources of certain events in Americas past. In this volume is many documents at the time the events occurred giving the reader the chance to come to his own conclusion about what happened. Also there are excerpts from what historians have said about the event since the time the event occured, in doing this the reader will see how historians have changed many of their interpretations of Americas past.

Sound Truth & Corporate Myth$: The Legacy of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill
ASIN: 0910055548 |
Book Description
Ten years later, the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill in Prince William Sound remains the largest tanker spill in the history of North America, and in its devastating effects upon wildlife and habitat, arguably the most damaging tanker spill in the history of the world. First released in 1991, John Keeble's account, Out of the Channel, combined on-the-scene witnessing of the oil spill's lethal results with analysis of its ramifications upon ecology, community, economy, law, the nature of public information, and upon the American mythos. The aftermath of the oil spill, and no less transforming, the spill of Exxon's money and power, reached into every sector of Alaskan life as well as into the conscience of the people of the lower forty-eight states. The event is now seen as one of a handful of signal ecological disasters of the twentieth century.
The new "Tenth Anniversary' edition of Out of the Channel adds to its evocative, original text a new and full assessment of the permutations and twists of big money, big litigation, and "petroleum speak" from the vantage point of several years' remove, as well as an account of the 1991, $1 billion civil settlement between Exxon, the U.S. Justice Department, and the State of Alaska-the largest such environmental settlement ever. In this now definitive book on the oil spill, all the primary concerns of the first edition are updated with new material, including the cause of the ship's grounding on Bligh Reef, the fate of Captain Joseph Hazelwood, the long lasting effects of the spill, the projected death toll among animals, the little-known 1993 fisherman's tanker blockade, late-developing evidence about the true quantity of oil spilled, the benefits and abuses of professional science, as well as the heartening results of citizen pressure to improve oil shipping procedures in Prince William Sound and to protect fragile habitat.

Universal guilt.......2001-03-25
Newspaper stories about the oil spill created the impression that the cause of the accident was simply that the captain was drunk. This book shows that the real situation was far more complex. The captain was definitely not drunk. He did have a few drinks, which is against regulations. Even after all the analysis it is not clear what exactly went wrong. The fact that the captain had a few drinks was not the only breach of regulations. None of the officers had a six-hour off duty time in the twelve-hour period before departure. The ship was single hulled instead of double hulled as was foreseen when the oil terminal was built. When Congress granted permission to build the pipeline and the terminal one of the conditions was that there would be a state-of-the-art contingency plan for oil spills. There was nothing of the sort. A Vessel Traffic Services station was supposed to monitor the movement of the ships through the strait. Due to cost cutting measures the station was unable to monitor the movement of the ship. A major cause of inefficiency in the clean up was the lack of clarity about who was in charge, the Coast Guard or Exxon. It is not just the captain that acted irresponsibly, so did all parties concerned. This is described in one part of the book. The second part of the book describes the impact of the oil spill and especially of the clean up on the communities affected. Each of the communities split in the middle. Half of the members took the position of trying to squeeze as much money out of Exxon as possible whilst the other half did not want to have anything to do with Exxon. Exxon did not succeed in engaging the communities in a positive way. The third part describes the nature in Alaska. These descriptions are wonderful and make you want to go there. These three parts are interwoven. The advantage is that the reader gets a three dimensional understanding of what happened: the responsibility for the disaster and the clean up, the impact on different members of the community and the impact on nature. The author places the ultimate responsibility on the consumer. He writes, " the American population prefers to live in a fog and is willing to accept almost anything in return for the opportunity to keep its gas tanks topped up" (with cheap gas). The combination of corporations maximising short-term profits and consumers closing their eyes to the consequences of their behaviour makes one worried. There must be a better way.
A humane account of a whitewashed catastrophe.......1999-10-30
Out of the Channel should be required reading for anyone who thinks environmentally ... not just environmentalists, but students, political and economic theorists, and most of all, writers. I had the good fortune to learn a great deal about writing from John Keeble, and reading his book is an education all by itself. As a rigorous study of the physical and human impact of the Exxon Valdez disaster, Out of the Channel is a comprehensive anatomy, a text that does not shirk any of the heavy load its vast subject demands. Without taking the easy route of righteous anger, Keeble explores every nuance of the oil spill, and he follows that tenacious blot of Prudhoe Bay crude as it seeps out of the tangible world and into the minds and spirits of the permanent and temporary inhabitants of Prince William Sound. This tenth anniversary edition, with the expanded coverage allowed by the perspective of time, is a gift that should not be overlooked.
A brilliant account of the Valdez oilspill and its aftermath.......1997-12-04
John Keeble, whose writing focuses on the issues facing the American Northwest, paints a memorable picture of the Exxon Valdez oilspill and its aftermath. Asked by the Greenwich Village Voice to write an article on the spill, he travels to Alaska and observes first-hand the efforts made to restore the land and the wildlife. However, the more he observes the more he is haunted by two observations: 1) that the size of the oil companies, and the entangled relationship between the companies and the government, is enormously greater than we have suspected, and 2) that the vast amounts of money poured into the clean-up effort causes many to view that money as their goal. His investigations into the clean-up follow a theme he develops in his other works: that the intrusion of a company or government upon the land inevitably causes exploitation; and those who live in that land must invariably suffer the consequences. Torn between the desires to make money, to clear the oil, and to downplay the scope of the incident, the people involved with clean-up waste a good deal of their effort. The more damage Keeble assesses, the more in tune he becomes with the suffering of the people and animals truly hurt, and ultimately, the reader, too, feels the chill that shakes the author at each new discovery.

Book Description
Landscape, that region of the earth saturated by human cultures, is today a place of deeply conflicting ideas about the natural world and our relation to it. Wilson traces the responses of Canadian, U.S. and aboriginal cultures to the land. He examines the environments we have built on this continent over the past fifty years as we continue to discover, exploit, protect, restore, and re-enchant a natural world in convulsion.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating Book that Questions the "Naturalness" of Nature.......2004-01-05
In "The Culture of Nature," Alexander Wilson argues that our sense of what counts as nature or as natural is by no means a "natural" or spontaneous perception of a preexistant and untouchable Nature. Instead, he demonstrates that how we experience and think of nature are largely shaped by the cultural, social, political, and economic forces that surround us and pervade our experience even when we think we have escaped them by leaving the city and venturing into the great outdoors. To support his argument, Wilson offers compelling anaylses of theme parks, forest preserves, wildlife conservation programs, scenic roadways, car, truck, train and air travel, and more. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the city versus the wildnerness experience, in how cultural forces affect our sense of what is natural, and in the role that government and financial forces have on our experience of our surroundings--especially of our "natural" surroundings.

Helpful.......2002-05-25
I liked the book, it was helpful as a source of inspiration for a new business card I was having designed. I will say that based on the pages in the magazine each month, they could have come with with a MUCH better selection of cards for originalities sake. But nonetheless, I am sure the proprietors of the establishments represented (you will recognize some of them) are pleased. I liked the book and founf it useful for my project, but as a lover of all things paper, I will stick to the pages of the magazine for really striking cards.

Book Description
Contemporary magazine design at its best is presented in this reference guide of examples from around the world, accompanied by interviews with key designers. The book discusses how editorial designers use elements such as navigational devices, photography, illustration, and typography to make a product that is understandable and attractive. Also covered are Web-based magazines and the unique restraints and practical design solutions that arise when designing for the Internet.
Chris Foges, the editor of Graphics International and author of Letterheads & Business Cards, lives in London.
Customer Reviews:
Designer Porn.......2002-10-10
I have to echo some of the plaudits and complaints about this book. Yes, it does provide a very nice look at design work from some of the leading magazine designers in the field, with tons of spreads and covers from such ultra high-end publications like Colors, Matador, and the like. But while these can be exhilarating to look at, they're unlikely to be of much practical use except to maybe the 5 or 10 designers in the world who are given the unlimited resources required to produce such works of art.
For the average magazine designer (like myself), the book isn't particularly helpful in helping us try and arrive at elegant design solutions to our problems. The book's emphasis on high-end magazines is of no use for those of us grappling with text-heavy magazines with very little photography. The book does attempt to provide examples of the full gamut of items: from barcodes, to spines, to navigation, typography, and so forth. However in many cases, the text and examples provide only the most cursory of insights-navigation systems in particular was a big disappointment. Obviously, the book is much stronger when it comes to photography-related issues. Extremely vexing is the lack of any discussion of advertising, for example, how to integrate 1/3 page and smaller ads into the overall design. Also irritating is the book's own typography, which is often squint-inducing.
So, I guess I'd file this under "designer porn". Nice to look at, but unless you're a superstar (or rich), you'll never get near any of this stuff. On the utility scale, this rates way low although there is a nice bibliography at the back.
Rather disappointed.......2001-02-13
I was rather disappointed by this book. It is beautifully designed, but rather empty: I would rather appreciate more exemples and less white space - I specially missed more text, more pictures of beautiful design, specially good design from everyday magazines. The author's background seems to make him favour mostly design and architecture magazines. He seems to forget that some people would also like to know about design for day-to-day magazines. Not only design's state-of-the-art, but also the bread-and-butter of design. The book seeems to have been written for the appreciation of other designers. Well, I'm no designer, I'm a journalist. And I'm not interested in obscure swiss design magazines, but on good exemples of everyday magazines I could take as references for my understanding and practical work as a journalist. Also, the interviews are not interviews at all, but abreviated biographies of a few leading designers. Perhaps they explain something about magazine design, but they seem to be mostly designers' eulogies, for the sakes of the book's content. Even so, it might be a good buy, as I have not been able to find other books on magazine design...
Comprehensive and Sophisticated Survey.......2000-12-21
Having read the previously posted reviews, I feel compelled to shed some informed light on the matter. To be clear, the book provides several hundred very sophisticated magazine layouts designed by the most influential designers of our generation. The book design itself is an informative and elegant demonstration of capable page layout, composition and pacing. It is not a low-level how-to instructional for beginners. The book speaks to a higher-level design audience regarding the conceptual value of the work surveyed. A comprehensive showcasing of progressive magazine design, the book concisely covers critical editorial components including format, navigation and systems, and provides commentary on the emerging Webzines trend and its impact on the industry. Perhaps most importantly, the text is insightful and informed.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in reading a comprehensive survey of progressive and influential editorial design on an international scale. A design library must-have.
Huge Disappointment.......2000-07-06
I'm a self-employed graphic designer who was recently commissioned to redesign a magazine. Looking for inspiration, I bought this book but was sorely disappointed to find no magazine layouts whatsoever-this book is pure photography. No editorial spreads, text layouts, headlines-nothing of the sort you'd expect with a title of "Magazine Design." To boot, there were 4 images of bare-breasted women in the first few pages I flipped through - these editors clearly have an aesthetic to push, which I don't share. I returned it immediately.
Truly Inspiring.......2000-05-16
I am currently researching Magazine Design in my final year of a Graphic Design degree. I found the copy in this book to be extremely helpful but it was the illustrations that made it for me. I find myself going back to them again and again to enjoy the visual playground that I find presented to me.
Customer Reviews:
A stunningly beautiful visual display........1998-08-28
As a person just starting to design letterheads and business cards, this book provided a feast for both my eyes and imagination. It also left me satisfied that I too have the ability to design letterhead and business cards that are as attractive and distinctive as those in the book.
The designs in the book range from the comic to the sophisticated. While many of the designs are for graphic artists and are therefore more graphically adventurous, there are also examples of work for: a dentist, neurosurgeon, glassblower, realtor, shopping mall, communications firm, and photographer among others.
In addition to having a plethora of design ideas, the book also has information on design and production costs. The only drawback to the book is that some of the papers used for the letterheads do not photograph well.
In conclusion, this book helps the designer by providing a starting point for the imagination. It also helps the designer work with the client by giving the client examples of work to look at. The client can then show the designer both what he/she likes and what he/she does not, aiding the design process for both client and designer.

George Lois was the genius graphic designer responsible for the legendary series of covers of Esquire magazine that were an icon-shattering and icon-defining commentary on the '60s. This collection of the best of those covers includes short anecdotes by Lois, but the chief interest is in the pictures he created. His covers were generally poster-like and free of excess words, and yet these pictures say plenty. The list of subjects is stellar: Marilyn Monroe, Norman Mailer, Muhammad Ali, Andy Warhol, Germaine Greer, and Richard Nixon. Sometimes the picture is a tease for the story within, sometimes it subverts it (as in the cover of a hangdog Roy Cohn with a ridiculous halo that accompanied a self-justifying piece written by Cohn). Only one of the covers reproduced here, a nude shot of Jack Nicholson, was cut before press time.

A few great entries, but too many average ones.......2000-06-05
This book is just "okay." The book itself is not designed in a way that I find particularly handsome (can a graphic design book be judged by its cover?). Similarly, some of what's inside is not very impressive, but the things that strike me (maybe a quarter of the things in the book) are really great.

Nice look back at 50's ads.......2007-01-12
This is a Japanese book (seemingly for a Japanese audience) on American fashion ads from the 50's era . The ads are reproduced as close to full size as possible and are shown in original colors and are lovely. There is no commentary on the ads to tell you why these ads are interesting, significant, or representative, but the ads themselves are fun to read and look at. Would have given 5 stars had there been discussion. Great library find, but not so much a buy unless you just want the ads.
