          Book Description

This comprehensive guide shows how photography became possible: from the early experiments with light, to sophisticated camera equipment and the stunning work of famous contemporary photographers.

Highly illustrated throughout in colour and black and white, the reader is taken on a fascinating photographic tour through history. Whether you are a student or dedicated enthusiast, this book will further your understanding of photography.

Written as an introductory text, the book is divided into two main halves. The first half deals with the main technical developments and describes the groundbreaking work of inventors that eventually led to the capture and permanent storage of an image. Developments in camera technologies are also described - from portable camera obscuras to modern day compacts and sophisticated electronic systems.

As the technical aspects of photography evolved, so too did its application. Photographers realised they could express a point of view, or use the medium as a language. For some this meant a romantic portrayal of a subject, whilst others documented the reality of situations, like war or poverty, or became obsessed with the visual appearance of subject shapes and forms. The second half of the book concentrates on what and why photographs were taken - showing how technique has become a means to an end, particularly in the hands of artists.

The late Michael Langford FIIP, FRPS was the former Photography Course Director at the Royal College of Art, London. He acted as external assessor for several schools of photography, was past chairman of The Society for Photographic Education, and an advisor to national examination boards for photography. He also wrote hundreds of articles for British and American magazines and was the author of three other best-selling textbooks for Focal Press: 'Basic Photography', 'Advanced Photography' and 'Starting Photography'.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Story of Photography: How it grew to be an Art.......2000-03-25

This fascinating story of how photography developed from a technical invention to a foremost art should be in the library of everyone who is interested in how our world came into being. Photography not only shows us the world, it helps us to interpret it; and this book clarifies how that came about. It traces the accomplishments of the inventors and their inventions, as well as those who use photography as their art or profession. In addition, it contains an excellent glossary; and a helpful Timeline, relating technical developments, photographers and movements, and historical events. This concise book is liberally illustrated, and contains a summary at the end of each chapter. For those who would like to apply what they have learned, there are also assignments that clarify the subjects. Overall, this book is a highly informative and enjoyable read.

This reprint of Orchard’s 1917 book on porcupine quill decoration is fully illustrated and features a color center section with examples of the art form. The plates and diagrams show every facet of quillwork from plaiting through wrapping. The step-by-step instructions are easy to follow for the craftsperson and the pictures and text make this a treasure for anyone interested in the craftwork of Native Americans. Porcupine quill decoration is a craft that is unique to the Indians of North America; a craft that can be found nowhere else in the world. Prior to about 1840 it was the principle means of decoration among most of this continent's Nations and as such one would suppose that there would be innumerable studies, books and articles about the subject. One of the reasons for this edition of Orchard's work (which was originally written in 1917) is that such is not the case. Some eighty years after the first publication, this work remains the best single source on traditional porcupine quill work and Orchard remains the acknowledged expert in the field.

The book is fully illustrated and features a color center section of examples of the art form. The plates and diagrams show every facet of quillwork from plaiting through wrapping. The step-by-step instructions are easy to follow for the craftsperson and the pictures and text make this a treasure for anyone interested in the craftwork of Native Americans.

As was done in the 1971 reprint of the first edition, no attempt has been made to revise the original text, figures or plates. However, four of the plates were destroyed and have been replaced by photographs of quilled articles taken from the editor's personal collection. The map was created for the reprint by Mr. Douglas Waugh and has not been changed.

This book is an enduring classic and the Eagle's View edition is currently in its sixth printing.

                        Book Description

For fifteen years, Peter Rosenstein has been scouting the boroughs of New York City to photograph the very best graffiti murals. His curiosity and energy, along with his extraordinary ability to capture the essence of the murals, has resulted in nearly two thousand color images and an unparalleled documentation of an art which very often is destroyed. Tattooed Walls features over one hundred photographs from Rosenstein's expeditions to the Bronx, Harlem, Spanish Harlem, the Lower East Side, the East Village, and Brooklyn.

The contemporary urban murals in Tattooed Walls depict a wide range of the human condition. They celebrate life; they mourn death; they express religious devotion; they are a communication medium for gang rivalries; they assert political opinions; and some simply bring a splash of color to a drab neighborhood wall. Down the block from vibrant spray-can creations are trompe l'oeil murals, a centuries-old technique meant to deceive the eye. Memorial murals are particularly moving in the lives they commemorate and in the statement they make against neighborhood violence.

Though a few New York muralists—such as Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat— achieved worldwide recognition, the majority work in obscurity and exist in a tight-knit world in which their fame is limited to their peers. Tattooed Walls includes a brief interview with the legendary artist and political activist De La Vega whose territory is Spanish Harlem, and a commentary from the artist Chico. It also features a foreword by artist and gallery owner Stefan Eins, who was one of the first in the broader art world to recognize and promote graffiti art.
