Book Description

In this first major study of French colonial and postcolonial cinema, Dina Sherzer compiles essays by some of the foremost scholars on the subject who interrogate and analyze the realities behind the images of the nation's past and present. Through an examination of France and its colonies, multiethnic contemporary France, and cinematic discourses which have been and are being produced about France's colonial past, these authors explore how the images relay underlying assumptions and their relation to historical and political facts. A variety of subjects and viewpoints inform these studies, which cover the entire range of films on that topic.

The authors expound upon the role French and Francophone films are currently playing in reconstructing and imagining France's colonial past. Not only do the essays examine how French cinema has represented the encounter of French citizens with individuals from former colonies during the colonial era; they examine how French cinema has portrayed and has come to terms with the immigration of former colonial subjects to France. In addition, the book features another postcolonial facet by analyzing films of directors from the former colonies who give their own representation of colonialism and presentation of their culture.

This study is a major contribution to postcolonial research. Race, gender, and geography are central themes throughout this book that presents innovative material that contributes to the history of French cinema and emphasizes how cinema participates in and is a part of national culture.

The relationship between colonial/postcolonial studies and cinema as a means of expression has been a hot topic on campuses in recent years, and this book is a good introduction to film's ability to express what sometimes gets lost in written works that have continued to go untranslated.

As John and Martha sit dreaming about what they could ask for, a chance remark by John prompts the appearance of some sizzling, succulent sausages! But the argument this causes between the couple leads to a very silly situation, which only their last remaining wish can put right. Jessica Souhami’s gorgeous cut-paper artwork and short, rhythmic text make this a perfect book for younger children or for sharing in a read-aloud.

      Book Description

Long before Edith Piaf sang "La vie en rose," her predecessors took to the stage of the belle epoque music hall, singing of female desire, the treachery of men, the harshness of working-class life, and the rough neighborhoods of Paris. Icon of working-class femininity and the underworld, the realist singer signaled the emergence of new cultural roles for women as well as shifts in the nature of popular entertainment. Chanteuse in the City provides a genealogy of realist performance through analysis of the music hall careers and film roles of Mistinguett, Josephine Baker, Fréhel, and Damia. Above all, Conway offers a fresh interpretation of 1930s French cinema, emphasizing its love affair with popular song and its close connections to the music hall and the café-concert.
Conway uncovers an important tradition of female performance in the golden era of French film, usually viewed as a cinema preoccupied with masculinity. She shows how--in films such as Pépé le Moko, Le Crime de Monsieur Lange, and Zouzou--the realist chanteuse addresses female despair at the hopelessness of love. Conway also sheds light on the larger cultural implications of the shift from the intimate café-concert to the spectacular music hall, before the talkies displaced both kinds of live performance altogether.

In the first book on this subject, Pascal Kamina unravels the complexities of film protection in the fifteen member states of the European Union, giving special emphasis to the United Kingdom and France. As well as addressing key aspects of film copyright, Kamina also deals with the protection of film works within the European Union in the context of European harmonisation of copyright laws. He details the main features of the domestic legislations of EU member states, and identifies the difficulties awaiting a further harmonization of copyright and neighbouring rights in this field. This book will interest practitioners, academics and students. The developments on contracts and moral rights will be of particular interest to lawyers outside continental Europe.

          “On a summer’s eve,
          a long time ago,
          I made one wish,
          on the brightest star
          in a twinkling night sky
I wished for a cottage by the sea…”

At the seaside, where our narrator lives, there sits a cottage “in a fragrant field of Queen Anne’s lace.” There is a porch to sunbathe on, a beach full of treasures waiting to be discovered, sandcastles are conquered by the incoming tide, and a young girl’s wish comes true.

Beautifully detailed, realistic, double-page illustrations make the ordinary extraordinary in this gentle picture book that is a memorable way to explore the seaside with even the youngest of readers.

17 of the author's best tales, compiled for the first time in one volume, range from comic ghost stories ("Haunted Subalterns") to psychological terror ("The Wandering Jew") and chilling accounts of the returning dead ("The Lost Legion"). Also includes what is widely considered Kipling's finest horror tale, the celebrated title story.

            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Kipling in Weird Mode..........2001-05-29

Kipling was the pre-eminent man of letters circa 1900, but pretty much unread today. Here S. T. Joshi has assembled 17 short stories by Kipling, in chronological order of composition. Contrary to the book's subtitle, these aren't horror tales, and many have no supernatural aspect at all.

It is notable that the stories grow steadily better as one goes through the book. "The Phantom Rickshaw" is a total absurdity, but by the time we get to "They" Kipling, like Barlowe and Lovecraft in "The Night Ocean," is looking ahead to the type of story that would be written by the likes of Robert Aikman in the 1960s and 1970s, probably the ultimate (to date) literary development of the horror tale, before it backslid into the EC-comics imitations of Stephen King and Dean Koonz and other currently and undeservedly popular writers.

Kipling is noted for fiction and verse set in India, but the best stories in the book, for me, had nothing to do with India. These included the before-mentioned "They," and "The Finest Story in the World," both of which appear to be based very loosely on real experiences of Kipling, and both of which seem to break genuinely new ground within their respective themes.

            S. T. Joshi contributes his usual perceptive introduction.

            Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Masterpieces of the occult.......2001-05-01

S.T. Joshi edits Mark Of The Beast & Others, a collection of horror tales by Rudyard Kipling, which pairs his lively manner with chilling tales of the dead and psychological terror. Some, as 'The Phantom Ricksaw', have been widely published and will be familiar to fans of the genre; others such as 'Lost Legion' may be less so. All provide masterpieces of the occult.

And, you learn from the book about animals that are important in India history and mythology. I think many of the pictures would be marvelous just framed. I am not a child and would certainly put them in my library!

4 out of 5 stars My Lord Beast .......2007-07-15

Lord Breme (Aubrey Drelincorte) is a man tortured by a memory that he can't remember. On a trip to India in 1842, Aubrey found out that his lovely wife Susannah had been having a long time secret affair with his cousin and heir apparent Rupert Hindley. Aubrey was devastated by the news and aimed to confront the pair. Though he remembers nothing of this incident, Aubrey was told that he shot and killed Susannah and was then himself mauled by a tiger. Sure that he had killed his wife, injured, and suffering from malaria, Aubrey fled back to England.

Lilias Merrit is the youngest daughter of a merchant. Lilias' sister Pamela had recently wed Squire John Trevell for a sizeable dowry. Now the girls' father has arranged a marriage between Lilias and Richard Landham, a good looking wealthy man with an unattractive personality. In an effort to flee from Richard's grips, Lilias petitions Lord Breme for help.

My Lord Beast is a historical romance with a well developed storyline. The author has done a very good job at seamlessly interweaving historical relevant issues and cultural norms into a timeless love story that can be both enjoyed and appreciated by the modern reader. Thus, the romance portion of this book seems a natural extension of the events of the story rather than the complete point of the entire book.

              4 out of 5 stars Clever.......2006-03-26

As romance books go, this 1 is both literate & charming. Mixing -Beauty & the Beast-, -Rebecca-, &-Kim- [at the very least], Lennox creates many charming people in this tale of a man mauled by a tiger & the pretty maid who rescues him when he returns from India. From their first meeting, Lord Aubrey is captivated by Miss Lilas Merrit, a non-traditional Englishwoman w/non-traditional beauty. Forced to marry & breed an heir, he quickly discovers the charm of her musicial, Gypsy-loving free spirit.

Nothing outstanding, but i *did* enjoy identifying the sources!

Step back in time to England where arranged marriages were often marriages of convenience. We are first introduced to Audrey Drelincourte, Earl of Breme, arriving home from India to save his reputation, his family home and to wed and produce an heir. Is he the beast everyone believes him to be?

Then we meet Lilias Merritt, feisty, outspoken second daughter of impoverished merchant Geoffrey Merritt. Lilias flees her father's home to avoid an arranged marriage to Richard Landham. In her escape she runs to the gypsies who plant her on the doorstep of Breme and directly in the path of Lord Breme himself.

Read along and see how the two clash and strike out against the feelings that pull them toward their destiny.

Having his carriage stopped on the road, Lord Breme listened to his man, Ram Dass carry on a conversation with a lady on horseback. As the carriage started again he commented, "Rather cheeky assassin." His thoughts stayed with Miss Merritt as he wondered about a woman "who went out on a winter eve with no groom, when a gentlewoman would have taken a carriage and an abigail. But she spoke like a lady and had just taken to task the owner of a coach and four with a gold crest emblazoned on it." Even ill, Audrey could find amusement in that.

Arriving at Breme, Lilias proposes to be a nurse the ailing master of the house. Only to be told, "I don't need a well-bred nurse-companion." With hopes of sanctuary here dashed, Lilias wonders what will become of her.

Although Lord Breme relents and keeps her on, their relationship is rocky and built on distrust. She wonders about the rumors, and he is there to stop the flow of rumors.

Did Lord Breme kill his wife? Can he clear his name? Can he remember what happened that fateful night? Will he be able to marry and produce an heir, and save his home? How does Lilias fit into all of this? Does she avoid marriage to Landham? Can she earn the trust of the lord of the manor?

All this and much more will be found in this book. Mary Lennox gives you very believable characters. Her sense of the times is uncanny. England's ton can make or break a person and she uses this knowledge to further the plot. It was a delightful read.

5 out of 5 stars Not quite a beauty and not exactly a beast.......2005-12-18

I loved this gothic-style interpretation of the beauty and the beast story. Lilias doesn't consider herself a beauty, nor does she consider Aubrey a beast. Lilias is strong and works hard to help herself and the man she loves. I hope Ram Dass has his own follow-up story.

5 out of 5 stars fine nineteenth century gothic romantic mystery .......2005-05-25

In 1842 with her merchant family in ruin, Lilias Merrit believes she is caught between a rock and a hard place; her options are limited to marrying an abusive man or accepting a job at Breme Castle, rumored home to an aristocratic beast. Lilias meets her new employer Aubrey Drelincourte, but shocks him as the repulsive scars on his face do not frighten her. Instead she expects his dark brooding will lead to rages that goes contrary to her feeling attracted to this depressing lord.

Still suffering from Malaria he caught in India, Aubrey also feels guilty over his wife's death though he remembers nothing about it except awakening holding the murder weapon while a leopard stood near her corpse. He fears that remembering what happened will affirm that he is a murdering beast. Though Aubrey expects to be tried as a killer, this does not scare him, but his odious cousin inheriting Breme does. He wants to marry quickly and beget an heir before the law comes for him. With little time available he chooses Lilias as his bride, but expects she will refuse to wed a killer.

This nineteenth century gothic romantic mystery hooks the audience from the moment that Lilias decides the unknown "evil" is safer than the known "evil". All the evidence cleverly points to Aubrey as a spousal murderer leaving fans to wonder how the male love interest could be the killer. Aubrey has doubts about his innocence and as he begins falling in love with Lilias, worries about her safety especially from him, his biggest fear. He insures MY LORD BEAST is a fine historical romantic suspense.

As World War II rages in the Pacific, U.S. and British soldiers fight their own battles in the steamy jungles of Burma. But, in an American military hospital in Calcutta, something terrible is amiss. This historical fiction features the internecine battles for Indian independence between those advocating the violent removal of Westerners and those loyal to Mohandas Gandhi.

I enjoyed this book from cover to cover. Pinkerton's story of heroics in the face of treachery in WWII-era India had me from the initial pages. Her research provides a realistic backdrop for the novel, and I think she wrote her key characters very convincingly. Congratulations to her, and to Pocol Press of Virginia for finding this jewel.

When I started reading Beast of Bengal, I wasn't expecting to get hooked into the story, but I did. I loved the historical details as well as the pure suspense and rich descriptions. India came alive for me. I knew nothing about the China/Burma/India theater of World War ll, but now I at least have some sense of it. The characters are staying with me, long after I finished the story -especially Richard. I can honestly say, watch this writer and read this book!

They do not sweat and whine about their condition, They do not lie awake in the dark and weep for their sins, They do not make me sick discussing their duty to God, Not one is dissatisfied, not one is demented with the mania of owning things.
