Customer Reviews:
Not bad for quick look at who Mussoilini was.......2007-05-15
the book is what it is advertized as--a weekend read of benito mussoilini. The author does a nice job of giving the reader a big picture view of the times and reasons for mussoilini's rise to power. I recommend the book to anyone who has never read any history of mussoilini--only heard of his death and being hung in the city square. It gives a nice reference point for conversations on WWII from Italy's perspective.
Solid introductory biography.......2005-09-27
Short, solid introductory biography written with craftsman-like prose, which places Mussolini in historical context and is especially good at noting the political and cultural boundaries that limited his "totalitarianism."
Amazing!.......2005-05-03
How can such profound scholarship read like a novel. Best buy I've made in ages, and I buy much.

Book Description
How did Mussolini come to fascism? Standard accounts of the dictator have failed to explain satisfactorily the transition from his pre-World War I "socialism" to his post-war fascism. This controversial new book is the first to examine Mussolini's political trajectory during the Great War through his journalistic writings, speeches and war diary. The author argues that the 1914-18 conflict provided the catalyst for Mussolini to clarify his deep-rooted nationalist tendencies. He demonstrates that Mussolini's interventionism was already anti-socialist and anti-democratic in the early autumn of 1914 and shows how in and through the experience of the conflict the future Duce fine-tuned his authoritarian vision of Italy in a state of permanent mobilization for war.

Illustrations to add a nostalgic touch.......2005-06-16
The early years of the twentieth century were a much simpler time in terms of technology, relationships and activities. Everyday events were captured in the form of drawings and these drawings were published in women's magazines. The illustrations in this collection were taken from those magazines and are now in the public domain. Therefore, they can be used to add a nostalgic flavor to graphic projects. People are depicted doing many things, doing farm and household chores, celebrating holidays, and modeling clothes. With so many different high quality images, you can no doubt find something for your project in this collection.
A fascinating glimpse into the past.......2001-07-21
"Spot Illustrations from Women's Magazines of the Teens and Twenties: 828 Cuts of Women, Family, Home, Garden, etc." is a valuable historical sourcebook. The collection has been compiled and arranged by Judy M. Johnson, who also provides an introduction.
The illustrations in this book depict the hair styles, clothing, and hat styles of this era. The illustrations also depict ideal women engaging in various activities: dancing, going on a horse drawn carriage ride, cooking and doing other household chores, etc. There are pictures of wedding dresses, home exteriors and interiors, etc.
Yes, these pictures undoubtedly present a sanitized portrait of the era. But this book is an interesting visual resource which opens a window onto the social values of the years from 1910-1929.
Wonderful collection of graphic art from the 1910's & 1920's.......1998-04-26
This Dover publication is a collection of graphic art from magazines and children's literature published in the
1910's and 1920's. The cuts are in black and white and
are mainly line drawings and silhouettes. Many I can remember from my mother's childhood books that she
used to read to us as children. The illustrations were
collected by the author and her family over the years and limited permission is given for their use in graphic
and crafts applications. They would be wonderful for
use in newsletters, invitations, scrapbooks, decorative
painting, etc. Most of the illustrations are of women and
children, but there are some of men, scenery, and special occasions such as Christmas, Easter, winter, and spring. A companion book by the same author is
'Vintage Spot Illustrations of Children, 795 Cuts from the
Teens and Twenties'.

Customer Reviews:
Not what I expected.......2006-08-21
I thought that this would be a book with reproductions of typical art deco motifs but it turns out to be one artist's interpretations of Art Deco, and in my opinion the results are pretty ugly...
these are not authentic.......2003-10-12
i assumed, since this was a dover book, that the designs would have been originally published in the 20s and 30s. not so. they are 'interpretations' by an artist born after deco ended and created in the mid-80s.
the designs are not horrible, but they're not wonderful, either. there may be one of two that, with tweaking, i might use, but most are pretty ordinary.
Book Description
Over 700 appealing, royalty-free graphics by Charles Dana Gibson, Dr. Seuss, Rube Goldberg, Milt Gross, Oliver Herford, and over 90 other leading illustrators of the period include appealing vignettes of flappers in cloche hats, young men alongside sleek sports cars, an anguished entrepreneur reading a stock market ticker tape, and more.
Customer Reviews:
a plea from the editor.......2001-02-23
I, Herb Galewitz, edited this book for Dover Publications. Why do you have it listed as edited by Anna Samuel. Who she? My name is on the book cover.
Book Description
1,049 whimsical images by George du Maurier, Randolph Caldecott, and others: art, music, transportation, grooming, more.
Customer Reviews:
Great for many uses.......2000-01-29
This book contains quality art for use in various publications. You are allowed to use as many as ten in a single publication without written permission. Very nice.

Brings back childhood memories!.......1998-04-26
This Dover publication is a wonderful collection of cuts
from magazines and children's publications from the
1910's and 1920's. The illustrations were collected by
the author and her family over the years. The collection
includes children of all ages and in all areas of life -
including various seasons - Christmas, Easter, Hallowe'en, - and children of different cultures. There
are some lovely sets of cut-outs - children with different
sets of clothing with tabs like the paper dolls we played
with as children. This book would be a wonderful source
of clipart for many applications, including scrapbooks.
Limited permission is given to use the cuts for graphic
and crafts applications. A companion publication by the
same author is 'Spot Illustrations from Women's
Magazines of the Teens and Twenties'.
