I was disappointed with this book - perhaps I had misread what it was about. Firstly it is in black and white on quite ordinary paper. I was expecting a tutorial book but found this leant more to the history of Quilting in the Amish community. Perhaps this might be acceptable to someone who had not heard of the Amish people and their association with quilts.

No color, no patterns, no quilt specifics. Just general Amish-info. Mostly talks about present-day quilting for sales to tourists, polester batts and poly-cotton fabrics, as though more traditional quilts are just history.
If you're a quilter, spend a few dollars more to own intriguing and satisfying books -- e.g, *****Amish Crib Quilts from the Midwest: 90 color photos which clearly show every great color combination and quilting pattern + dimension, date, fabric info, etc. Any quilt pictured can go straight to big-bed size w/ application of a little arithmetic. Also gives us a new appreciation of cotton chambrays & simple warm baby quilts.

I lived in the same general area as Swander describes although I know nothing about living among the Amish. I appreciated her comments about having to relearn eating again.

Swander is a wonder.......1998-10-04

Feeling in need of healing myself, I read "Out of This World," with delight. It's an Iowan's book, or a Midwesterner's, and it helps to live near an Amish community. Swander can depict the Amish people as individuals, because she interacts with them and respects their simplicity and spirituality. I especially enjoyed the description of her Christmas celebration and of her animals' lives. To me, she writes like E. B. White crossed with Annie Dillard--the domestic life interwoven with the natural, seamlessly.

Rambling, self-absorbed & poorly written........1998-01-18

My copy of this book is titled "Out Of This World: A Woman's Life Among The Amish", NOT "Out Of This World: A Journey Of Healing". I was disappointed. I was expecting a cultural anthropology of an "English" woman's experiences living in a primarily Amish neighborhood. True, there was some of that in the book. But it was mostly a rambling, self-absorbed personal memoir. The author was writing about her trials in coming to terms with her Environmental Illness. By the end of the book, I was thoroughly bored with her hypnotherapy sessions, her dreams about eating, the many frog legs she actually ate (including details on their capture and slaughter) and exactly how she chewed her yucca. In addition to not being the type of book I was expecting, it appeared to be written in more or less a "stream of consciousness" style, with no logical organization or chronology. In other words, I didn't particularly enjoy the book and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Known in Pennsylvania Dutch as brauche or braucherei, the folk-healing practice of powwowing was thought to draw upon the power of God to heal all manner of physical and spiritual ills. Yet some people believed, and still believe today, that this power to heal came not from God, but from the devil. Controversy over powwowing came to a climax in 1929 with the York Hex Murder Trial, in which one powwower from York County, Pennsylvania, killed another powwower (who, he believed, had placed a hex on him).

In Powwowing Among the Pennsylvania Dutch, David Kriebel examines the practice of powwowing in a scholarly light and shows that, contrary to popular belief, the practice of powwowing is still active today. Because powwowing lacks extensive scholarly documentation, David Kriebel's research is both a groundbreaking inquiry and a necessity for the scholar of Pennsylvania German history and culture.

Lovely, "insider's" look at this unique culture.......1999-03-19

This book is a loving look at the Pennsylvania Amish culture, and it really captures that world, with simple words and luminous illustrations. Instead of being kitschy or tacky like many feeble attempts at representing the Amish, it's very esthetically pleasing--a gorgeous coffee-table book, at an unbelievable price, and very engrossing to read. You really enter another world when you open it. Americans tend to idealize the Amish, with their old-world values: They live on beautiful farms, raise organic food, and seem to thrive without tv, cars, and other modern conveniences. I think of this book as sort of "soft-core" anthropology, because while the illustrations are beautiful and museum-quality, the Amish aren't idealized. You realize how hard they work, and what their limitations are. It's clear that Bowen actually spent a lot of time "among" them, observing their life respectfully but giving a very clear picture of it at the same time.

Interesting but incomplete.......2007-02-22

I read this book with great interest; I find the Amish and Mennonite to be beacons of true Christianity in this era of materialism and hedonism, and am always seeking to gain a better understanding of them. That, of course, leads me to seek out books like Dr. Frau, yet at the same time it places me in the unfortunate position of creating the demand for books that pry into their personal lives.

This book deals with one of the most guarded aspects of Old Order Amish and Mennonite life--the birth of children. The author of course understands this fully and deals with the actual births in a brief and respectful manner; the stories focus primarily on the circumstances surrounding particular births, such as driving through heavy rain or blizzards, having to hurry between several births on the same day, etc. There are also some stories about her medical practice in general, attending to non-Amish/Mennonites, and rural life.

Unfortunately, I can't say that the author is a particularly good writer, or a natural storyteller. The stories were inconsistant, at times somewhat mundane, and in the end I was left with the sense that this book wasn't entirely complete.

This is one of my absolute favorite books. The stories are a fascinating look both at the life of Amish people and human nature. These chapters will make you laugh, feel and think. You can't go wrong with this book and Dr. Kaiser's second book, "Detour" if you have any interest in Amish life and culture.

It's been awhile since I've read this book, but I really enjoyed it. Dr Kaiser's book takes you inside Amish homes where she delivers their babies. What really struck me was the fact that many Amish women keep working...canning food...sewing...cooking... right up until the time they are ready to lay down and push the baby out! Dr Kaiser fights her way through snow storms, battles attacking farm dogs and deals with some quirky Amish people which makes for some very entertaining reading!

Dr. Kaiser was a no-nonsense country doctor for many years in the Pennsylvania Dutch country. She delivered babies at home for the Old-Order Amish and Mennonites, sometimes arriving at the farmhouse by sleigh, if necessary. She writes with astonishing detail about her patients, their humor and lifestyle. Dr. Kaiser got stuck in mud, snow, was sometimes unavoidably to late to get the baby delivered, but she always treated her patients with deep respect and loving care.

A truly educational experience in the first person. Grace Kaiser has done an excellent job of documenting her many years of experience as a Practicing Physician living amongst the Amish people. She leaves nothing to the imagination on her birthing experiences. Learned much from reading this book of short stories.
