Book Description

From woman's suffrage to Babe Ruth's home runs, from Louis Armstrong's jazz to Franklin Delano Roosevelt's four presidential terms, from the finale of one world war to the dramatic close of the second, War, Peace, and All That Jazz presents the story of some of the most exciting years in U.S. history. With the end of World War I, many Americans decided to live it up, going to movies, driving cars, and cheering baseball games a plenty. But alongside this post-WWI spree was high unemployment, hard times for farmers, ever-present racism, and, finally, the Depression, the worst economic disaster in U.S. history, flip-flopping the nation from prosperity to scarcity. Along came one of our country's greatest leaders, F.D.R., who promised a New Deal, gave Americans hope, and then saw them through the horrors and victories of World War II. These three decades--full of optimism and despair, progress and Depression, and, of course, War, Peace, and All That Jazz--forever changed the United States.

5 out of 5 stars Bravo!.......2005-05-24

Bravo, Joy Hakim! History was never really enjoyable for me-not boring, just not really captivating. This book, number 9 in A History of US, is my favorite so far. The others were really well done, and I enjoyed them, too.
She really writes it more like our countries big story. The famous men and women are introduced more as characters than as names. From the "Lets just have a good time" 20's after World War I, through racial bigotry, the Depression, the attack on Pearl Harbor to the end of World War II, she explains everything in detail. Hakim throws in funny and interesting facts, pictures (the second edition is in full color) paragraphs out of books, autobiographies and letters, making you feel that you understand almost everything you can. I think this, the 1918-1945 period in history has been the most interesting for me. So much was going on! It seems like she packed a lot into one book, but even her summarizing jobs are amazing.
I really admire her truthfulness, and the hope she always seems to have that things will get better in the future, and that we'll try not to repeat old mistakes. She acclaims people who helped change the nation for better, and doesn't justify or smooth over the bad. Even while she's telling about all the evil of Hitler's government, she is letting you know that America's government made some pretty bad mistakes too, like not accepting the 2,000 refugee children from Germany that Hitler was willing to send over.
One thing I like most about her books, and especially this one, is she never makes an excuse for the hate groups, rioters, and even famous people that she admires. She pulls out the faults, and explains carefully why they did the things they did . Hakim does it in a way that makes you understand, if not accept, their acts. There are still things I don't (and don't think I ever will) understand in history, but Hakim really helps me grasp them better. Kids will really enjoy these books a lot more than the huge history textbooks. Hakim put some really hard issues and photos in her books, but after all, they are history.
Five stars definitely!

4 out of 5 stars Not Perfect, but Pretty Darned Good.......2005-05-17

American kids have a hard enough time caring about the post-Vietnam era. For an author to make the years from 1918 to 1945 come alive, and particularly the Great Depression, is a feat indeed. Hakiim has accomplished it with this book. The criticisms about its sympathies to Communism are well-taken, but a good middle or high school teacher can remedy that in short order, or simply assign selected chapters instead of having kids read all the way through from start to finish. I have had students tell me that they are reading this volume for enjoyment, which is also a remarkable feat.

3 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware.......2004-07-20

I doubt there's any US History textbooks more excitingly written for kids age 9-12 than Joy Hakim's. (This series is the one used in one of the best private schools in Silicon Valley.) They're glossy and beautiful, and well-nigh irresistible. What an incredible shame. What's the problem? The problem is they contain a version of history so slanted as to amount to an utterly shameless propagandizing of children. I'm a liberal atheist, but, really, these books should be sealed into a time capsule, to entertain future historians.

I assume Hakim simply doesn't know any better, but even a Marxist with a PhD in American History would blush a little to discover that a child reading this series would never suspect that close to 100 million innocent men, women, and children died under the yoke of socialist regimes, nor that a third of the world was plunged into an unnecessary grinding poverty for decades. On the other hand, they will learn, as they should, that National Socialism murdered six million innocents, and that the Ku Klux Klan `grew hugely' in the 1920s. But they won't learn that any other serious totalitarian movements also grew hugely in the 1920s, or that five million innocents died under the rule of Lenin's first experiment in socialism in the 1920s.

On the contrary, all anti-Communism in the twentieth century is presented as nothing better than a witch-hunt. Indeed, anti-communism is literally referred to as a `witch-hunt,' several times. Come on. So, was the fight against Hitler's National Socialism a `witch-hunt'? Why such a palpable double standard for twin evils? Hakim teaches children that while National Socialism was indeed a real and present danger, and even worth waging an unprecedented World War to fight it, on the other hand, international socialism, or Communism, was, as she tells it, never any real danger to Americans.

For instance, there's a chapter on the HUAC hearings in which McCarthy is referred to as a 'liar' about a half a dozen times. The chapter literally begins with the opening sentence "Joe McCarthy was a liar." Sure, he's controversial, but the latest research by historians just doesn't back up Hakim's wild-eyed account of liberal anti-socialism in America as nothing better than a nefarious `witch-hunt' conducted by `liars' and oppressors. Totalitarian Communist Lillian Hellman is profiled as a hero, and the overall impression is given that none of these people really were Communists, but, instead, were all just as falsely accused as the supposed `witches' of Salem.

This conclusion is then used to prove the statement that Americans are a fundamentally paranoid people, who basically lose their marbles very once in a while. (See book "Not Without Honor." on McCarthy and PBS documentary on Salem to find out why even Salem wasn't actually paranoia after all, but a toxic crop of moldy rye.)

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best History Books I've Read.......2003-03-14

"War, Peace, and All that Jazz" was one of the best history books I've ever read. It has a good approach of talking about things like the Stock Market Crash without seeming boring, and actually goes into more details than many other History books I've read. It also has really good pictures of everything from Babe Ruth to Charles Lindbergh to World War two. I really liked this book and want to keep it, even though I orignally bought it only for a college term paper.

5 out of 5 stars I loved it!.......2001-05-08

I loved this book and all of Joy Hakim's books. She makes history interesting, not just interesting, but FASINATING! I would recomend this book to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars The Great Depression and World War II in one volume.......2004-06-17

"War, Peace, and All That Jazz" is the ninth and second to last volume in Joy Hakim's series A History of US, and it covers a lot of ground. It starts with the end of the First World War and ends with the end of the Second World War. In between it throws in the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression, and the New Deal. Even though it starts on November 11, 1918, Hakim sets up this book as covering the start of a new century, establishing the idea that after World War I everything was different. The preface even underscores the point with a photograph showing a public gathering in Munich on August 1, 1914 when a crowd cheered Germany's decision to go to war; among those photographed in the mob in an enlarged circle was a smiling mustached 25-year-old Austrian watercolor artist named Adolf Hitler.

This volume basically breaks down into three main sections. The first deals with the complete transformation of the United States after World War I, with Prohibition, Women's Suffrage, and the Red Scare. The Scopes "Monkey Trial" gets an extended sidebar and chapters are devoted to both Babe Ruth and the Negro Leagues (with references to Jesse Owens and Joe Louis as well). Modern technology is represented by the achievements of Edwin Hubbel, Albert Einstein, Robert Goddard, and Charles Lindbergh. The second section sets up "The Prosperity Balloon" that popped when the Stock Market crashed. Having established the problem, Hakim presents Franklin AND Eleanor Roosevelt as the solutions, devoting a half dozen chapters to each of them before FDR runs for the White House.

The final section deals with World War II, starting with the idea of Hitler, Francisco Franco, Benito Mussolini, Joseph Stalin, and even America's Father Coughlin, as 20th-Century monsters. Hakin deals with the Nazi's Final Solution to exterminate the Jews in Europe and the scientists who warned FDR of the threat of Germany developing the atomb bomb, before Pearl Harbor draws the United States into the war. While dealing with the high points of the two-ocean war, Hakim also devotes chapters to the interment of Japanese-Americans as "Forgetting the Constitution," and the death of FDR before final victory. After the dropping of the atomic bombs on Japan and the arrival of peace, the final chapter, "Picturing History," ends the book with works of art including paintings by Edward Hooper, Georgia O'Keefe, Joseph Stella, Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, and others.

In "A Note from the Author" Hakim talks about the first half of the 20th century in terms of the famous opening lines of "A Tale of Two Cities," where Charles Dickens declares: "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness..." The emphasis here is on the idea that there are lessons to be learned from the horrible things that happened during this period by the young students reading this book today.

This series remains ideally suited for children who are being home schooled because Hakim brings the same sort of involvement to her historical narrative that you would want to see provided by a teacher in a classroom. This book pays as much attention to Louis Armstrong's jazz as it does to Babe Ruth's home runs and consistently relates things back to the thesis that these three decades full of optimism and despair, progress and Depression, and war, peace and all that jazz, forever changed the United States. In response to the twin challengs of the Great Depression and World War II, Franklin Roosevelt essentially set the stage for the United States that emerged in the second half of the 20th century.

5 out of 5 stars A refreshing approach to teaching history!.......2000-05-25

I was introduced to Joy Hakim's series as an undergrad and have yet to find a more stimulating resource for teaching history to children. As a child, I (like many, I suspect) dreaded the dry, bare-bones, sketches of American history. Boy, do I wish I had had this book years ago! It brings vibrant life to the wonders of our country's past. This particular volume blooms with exciting stories such as those little-known facts of real life sports heros of the day - including an introduction to Babe Didrickson, a female dynamo that history has virtually ignored ... until now! Art, music, presidents, controversy, WWII, they're all here in juicy detail!

very complete and well explained, with interesting comments. It gives you ideas and opens your mind if you are a not-so-expert person on the subject

1 out of 5 stars Design Trumps Function?.......2007-03-11

For a design book, it would be fabulous except for the fact that you need a magnifying glass in order to read it (what appears to be 5pt type set in gray). For this reason, when design and layout of the book negates the purpose (function) of the book, it is rendered useless. Rockport is well known for its beautiful graphic design books, but I have noticed several of their other titles also designed this way. Sorry I bought it, sold it for a loss.

                1 out of 5 stars Almost unreadable.......2007-02-02

Most of the type in this book has been done using a size 6 Font which as far as I am concerned makes it practically unreadable. The content may be great, but I can't tell as I refuse to ruin my eyes trying to read type this small. It remainds me of the disclaimers that advertisers use at the bottom so you can't read them. Unless you absolutely must have this book, I would strongly advise finding another one

                5 out of 5 stars strong examples.......2007-01-29

this is a great book, it give a very nice examples about the best graphics in the market and how it was made. It can inspire you.

1 out of 5 stars Great for Big City Designers, but not for me.......2007-01-22

I produce newsletters for non-profit's on a true shoestring budget. I am constantly searching for inspiration that is do-able on a shoestring budget (no color, no fancy paper, no long-winded discussions about the "role" of the designer - "sheesh") but found literally nothing in this book helpful to me, that makes the book worth keeping on my shelf.

If you have big budgets and staff, this book might be useful for you.

When going with two colors is a "challenge" you know that the designers whose work is being held up as the best of design really have no clue about the challenges faced by those working for needy but worthwhile agencies who cannot afford to hire "designers" but need to get information out, and attempt to do so in a visually pleasing and accessible way.

                  Book Description

Billions of dollars are spent every year on promotions, and for some, the payoff is huge. The key is creating promotions that cut through the clutter to delight, astound, amuse, shock, and touch one's intended audience in a memorable and smart way.

This book takes intelligent and well-crafted promotions and breaks down the essential elements in a caption-like format so the readers will get the maximum number of promotions and the information they need in the shortest amount of time. Despite the streamlined approach, no critical information is lost.

Featuring 140 diverse promotions, Innovative Promotions at Work: A Quick Guide to the Essentials of Effective Design deconstructs each and provides answers to designers' six most important questions: What was the promotion for? What was the concept? What was the goal? What were the challenges? What did the client require? Last, how successful was the piece?

The answers to these questions give readers the insight they need to construct a roadmap to a successful promotion of their own.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on direct marketing!.......2001-05-10

Loved this book. I bought this book after seeing David Katz lecture... His writing style is just as good as seeing him in person! Informative, great examples, persuaded me to create even better direct mail...

5 out of 5 stars This book earned money for me, WOW!.......2000-01-13

It was directly based upon an inspiration generated from this book, Design for Response, that I sold my latest design project. There are many great examples in this book that have kept me thinking of new projects.

5 out of 5 stars useful book, filled with applications for all DM'ers.......1999-03-02

I liked this book for its gallery sections, over 200 photographs of great DM examples that spark new ideas and methods of execution. The chapters and discussions are well described and give many references and referals I found useful. I particularly liked the discussion of The new Census 2000 Form and the very clever Otis Elevator campaign based upon a Frank Lloyd Wright letter.

5 out of 5 stars Wow, a new idea in direct marketing literature!.......1999-02-16

Finally a book on direct marketing that is NOT just a biography, a self-promotion, or "Mail Order for Dummies." This book actually uses several interesting examples of direct mail to illustrate the psychology of persuasion vis-a-vis design and marketing tactics. Thank you Sherr & Katz.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for anyone that is involved with direct mail!.......1998-12-31

This book has some great examples of direct marketing that I had never encountered anywhere else, and I have been in the industry for over 20 years...

What I found particularly interesting were the author's comments on each piece, and the detailed case-studies that are the foundation for each chapter.

The case-studies discuss the psychological basis for the responses generated as well as an in-depth illustration of the design elements.

                    I highly recommend this book.

If you are looking for a book that you can read, study and learn from, keep looking. The type in this book is so unbelieveably small as to make it practically unreadable. If you thought that the old "Small print at the bottom of the page" was small, you should see this book. My advice, avoid it like the Plauge!

4 out of 5 stars How to Get the Answer Key.......2006-03-25

To all those who decried the lack of an answer guide: Agreed! However, you can get it by contacting the office of the author, Scott Purvis, at Gallup & Robinson at 609-730-1550, 609-730-1566 (fax), or sos@gallup-robinson.com. You must filling out a form that attests to the fact that it's for professional and not academic use (that is, that you're not trying to get a better grade in an advertising course that uses it for a textbook).

1 out of 5 stars This book stinks!.......2004-06-11

Shame on me for not researching carefully enough to discover that it's just a textbook with NO answers; you have to have the instructor's guide. All by itself, it's nothing less than a ripoff. As a marketing & advertising professional, I'm disappointed.

2 out of 5 stars So which one did?.......2002-12-25

Well this book could be helpful, it has a lot of research talk in it. The ads are black and white. It can be a bit confusing. I'd pass on it if you are a graphic designer, but if you are in market research and analysis it might work for you. I'd recommend it if you can buy it real [inexpensive]! Don't pay a lot for this book it's not worth it. But you may get some information from the "professional" comments. Over all it's a pass up. Don't buy it by the cover! It's not going to answer that question

5 out of 5 stars Do not buy it without the instructor's guide.......2001-10-03

Great book with interesting interviews and side-by-side comparisons of real ads for real products. The book asks the question, but only the Instructor's Guide, SOLD SEPARATELY, gives the answers. Don't buy one without the other.

                    1 out of 5 stars False advertising.......2001-03-03

Although this book would be really helpful IF it included the answer to it's title "Which Ad Pulled Best," it doesn't answer that question in any of it's 50 example ads. I feel scammed! It's not made clear that one needs an answer book. The author should know my first rule of advertising...always be straight-up and honest!
