20th Century Space History: X-15 Rocket Airplane and Spacecraft, Hypersonic Test Program Transiting from Air to Space, History, Images, and Movies (Two CD-ROM Set)

Book Description
This unique electronic book on CD-ROM has the finest collection of documents, photographs, and resources available anywhere about the X-15 rocket airplane and spacecraft. In addition, there is extensive material about two aviation and space pioneers, Scott Crossfield and Chuck Yeager, and detailed information about the X-1 and lifting body programs. The X-15 was a rocket-powered aircraft 50 ft long with a wingspan of 22 ft. It was a missile-shaped vehicle with an unusual wedge-shaped vertical tail, thin stubby wings, and unique fairings that extended along the side of the fuselage. The X-15 weighed about 14,000 lb empty and approximately 34,000 lb at launch. The XLR-99 rocket engine, manufactured by Thiokol Chemical Corp., was pilot controlled and was capable of developing 57,000 lb of rated thrust (actual thrust reportedly climbed to 60,000 lb). North American Aviation built three X-15 aircraft for the program. The X-15 research aircraft was developed to provide in-flight information and data on aerodynamics, structures, flight controls, and the physiological aspects of high-speed, high-altitude flight. A follow-on program used the aircraft as a testbed to carry various scientific experiments beyond the Earth's atmosphere on a repeated basis. For flight in the dense air of the usable atmosphere, the X-15 used conventional aerodynamic controls such as rudder surfaces on the vertical stabilizers to control yaw and canted horizontal surfaces on the tail to control pitch when moving in synchronization or roll when moved differentially. For flight in the thin air outside of the appreciable Earth's atmosphere, the X-15 used a reaction control system. Hydrogen peroxide thrust rockets located on the nose of the aircraft provided pitch and yaw control. Those on the wings provided roll control. Because of the large fuel consumption, the X-15 was air launched from a B-52 aircraft at 45,000 ft and a speed of about 500 mph. Depending on the mission, the rocket engine provided thrust for the first 80 to 120 sec of flight. The remainder of the normal 10 to 11 min. flight was powerless and ended with a 200-mph glide landing. Generally, one of two types of X-15 flight profiles was used: a high-altitude flight plan that called for the pilot to maintain a steep rate of climb, or a speed profile that called for the pilot to push over and maintain a level altitude. The X-15 was flown over a period of nearly 10 years--June 1959 to Oct. 1968--and set the world's unofficial speed and altitude records of 4,520 mph (Mach 6.7) and 354,200 ft (over 67 mi) in a program to investigate all aspects of piloted hypersonic flight. Information gained from the highly successful X-15 program contributed to the development of the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo manned spaceflight programs, and also the Space Shuttle program.
In 199 flights, the X-15 spent eighteen hours above Mach 1, twelve hours above Mach 2, nearly nine hours above Mach 3, nearly six hours above Mach 4, one hour above Mach 5, and scant minutes above Mach 6. It flew to Mach 6.72 (4,520 mph) and an altitude of 67 miles. Twelve pilots flew it, and one of them died. Beginning as a hypersonic aerodynamics research tool, the X-15 eventually became much more than that. The X-15 furnished a focus and stimulus for hypersonic studies, with many great accomplishments: development of the first large restartable "man-rated" throttleable rocket engine, the XLR99; first application of hypersonic theory and wind-tunnel work to an actual flight vehicle; development of the wedge tail as a solution to hypersonic directional stability problems; first use of reaction controls for attitude control in space; first reusable superalloy structure capable of withstanding the temperatures and thermal gradients of hypersonic reentry; development of new techniques for the machining, forming, welding, and heat-treating of Inconel X and titanium; development of improved high-temperature seals and lubricants; development of t

ASIN: 1893472086 |
Book Description
THE BEST TECHNICAL, NUTS-AND-BOLTS DESCRIPTION OF THE APOLLO COMMAND AND SERVICE MODULE IN PRINT TODAY! The Command Module (CM) was the control center for the Apollo spacecraft, providing living and working quarters for the three-man crew for the entire flight, except for the period when the Lunar Module descended to the Moon for landing and return. The cone-shaped CM was the only part of the spacecraft that returned to Earth from space. The cylindrical Service Module (SM) was designed to support the command module and its crew, housing the electrical power subsystem, reaction control engines, part of the environmental control system, and the service propulsion subsystem including the main propulsion engine for insertion into orbit around the Moon, for return from the Moon, and for course corrections. The 22-foot long SM was attached to the command module until just before Earth entry, when it was jettisoned. This WSN Special Report exclusively features the best NASA document on the CSM - the official Apollo Spacecraft News Reference. There are over 170 illustrations, cut-away drawings, schematics, tables and charts. From the docking system to the Service Propulsion System engine, every part of the Command Service Module is described in detail. It is a genuine treasure-trove of facts, figures, and historical information about man's greatest engineering achievement. If you are fascinated by the Apollo era, you'll want this spectacular report!
Please keep in mind that since this is a reproduction of an original historic document, it contains a few minor flaws and some pages with small text. Overall, however, the reproduction is very clear and sharp.

Fantastic Apollo information: highly recommended.......2001-04-16
Wow! Kudos to World Spaceflight News for coming up with these great Apollo documents! For discovering the nitty-gritty technical details of the Apollo moon program spacecraft, these books are absolutely unbeatable. None of the glossy picture books and autobiographies from the last 30 years explain the inner workings of Apollo like these original NASA references.
Every page is clearly printed, and there are A TON OF SPECTACULAR schematics and similar drawings. There are a few muddy black and white old-style photographs, but luckily most all of the "illustrations" are drawings! I found that everything (text and drawings) was legible and understandable.
One of the great things about this command module reference is the description of the guidance and navigation hardware which told the astronauts how to get to the moon. It explains the "verb" and "noun" keyboard inputs to the computer - it seemed that every air-to-ground conversation with the crew mentioned these confusing terms!
You won't compare this to a finely bound volume from a major publisher - but hey, this is the only way to get this "geeky" information. As a lifelong Apollo fanatic, I'm happy to get this material however it comes. I've searched the web for many hours, and I never found this book or anything like it on any website. It is, as they say, unique. Period.
If you love Apollo - you want this book. In fact, you want all three (CSM, Lunar Module, Saturn V) volumes. Highly recommended!

21st Century Complete Guide to the Webb Space Telescope, Successor to the Hubble Space Telescope, Planet Finder, Origins Program, New Visions for Astronomy and Space Science (CD-ROM)
World Spaceflight News Manufacturer: Progressive Management ProductGroup: Book Binding: CD-ROM ASIN: 1592484859 |
Book Description
This comprehensive CD-ROM provides the complete story of the planned James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), the scientific and technological successor to the Hubble Space Telescope. With a 6-meter class segmented active optic primary deployable mirror, and three major instruments (Near-Infrared Multi-Object Spectrometer, Near-Infrared Camera, Mid-Infrared Camera/Spectrometer), this major observatory will be placed in orbit at Lagrange Point 2 (1.5-million km or 940,000 miles from Earth). JWST will allow us to see even farther into space than is currently possible with Hubble and help us analyze the miniscule specks of light that Hubble cannot even detect. These nascent stars and galaxies are so distant that by the time their light reaches us, it has stretched into the longer, redder wavelength bands and is invisible to the human eye. JWST is the centerpiece of the NASA Origins Program:Born of the extraordinary accomplishments of 20th century physics, astronomy, geology, and biology, the Origins program takes up the challenge of answering questions as old as our species. Where did we come from? Are we alone? When the answers to these questions are known, our civilizations will evolve new visions of who we are and what our futures might be. Already we have learned enough to appreciate that the universe is enormous and ancient, but life tiny and transient is its precious jewel. In the first few decades of this new century astronomers will largely complete the study of cosmology: the description of the universe on the largest scales and how it works. With the Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) and the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) we will also begin to write the final chapter of the story of galaxies, witnessing the actual birth of these continents of stars. In particular we will chart the13-billion-year history of the Milky Way Galaxy we inhabit, understanding how the materials for new stars, planets, and life were generated and distributed. SIRTF and JWST will also lead the way in studying the birth of stars with their families of planets, moons, comets, and asteroids, the cosmic Petri dish of life. Led by the Terrestrial Planet Finder, we will peer one-by-one at our hundreds of nearest neighbor stars and inventory their planets, searching for solar systems resembling our own with a balmy, wet planet like Earth.
JWST, Planet Finder, Keck Interferometer, and the Origins Program are comprehensive covered, with dozens of program documents, photographs, charts, and tables.
In all, this CD-ROM has over 17,000 pages reproduced using Adobe Acrobat PDF software - allowing direct viewing on Windows and Apple Macintosh systems. Reader software is included on the CD. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, comprehensive, and portable.

2003 Space Shuttle Columbia Tragedy: Columbia Accident Investigation Board (CAIB) Final Report, August 2003 ¿ The Gehman Board Report to NASA on the Space Shuttle Program
World Spaceflight News Manufacturer: Progressive Management ProductGroup: Book Binding: Ring-bound ASIN: 1592484867 |
Book Description
This is the official final report released on August 26, 2003 by the Columbia Accident Investigation Board (CAIB) on the last flight of space shuttle Columbia, which ended in the horrible, sudden loss of the vehicle and crew during entry on February 1, 2003.The opening statement of the board's report says:
"We sought to discover the conditions that produced this tragic outcome and to share those lessons in such a way that this nation's space program will emerge stronger and more sure-footed. If those lessons are truly learned, then Columbia's crew will have made an indelible contribution to the endeavor each one valued so greatly. After nearly seven months of investigation, the Board has been able to arrive at findings and recommendations aimed at significantly reducing the chances of further accidents. Our aim has been to improve Shuttle safety by multiple means, not just by correcting the specific faults that cost the nation this Orbiter and this crew. With that intent, the Board conducted not only an investigation of what happened to Columbia, but also to determine the conditions that allowed the accident to occur - a safety evaluation of the entire Space Shuttle Program."
This is a color and black and white reproduction of the complete text of the highly detailed and well-illustrated report, including about 100 color illustrations. The report includes hundreds of tables and illustrations, figures, color photos, and line drawings.
The executive summary states:
"The Board recognized early on that the accident was probably not an anomalous, random event, but rather likely rooted to some degree in NASA's history and the human space flight program's culture. Accordingly, the Board broadened its mandate at the outset to include an investigation of a wide range of historical and organizational issues, including political and budgetary considerations, compromises, and changing priorities over the life of the Space Shuttle Program. The Board's conviction regarding the importance of these factors strengthened as the investigation progressed, with the result that this report, in its findings, conclusions, and recommendations, places as much weight on these causal factors as on the more easily understood and corrected physical cause of the accident. The physical cause of the loss of Columbia and its crew was a breach in the Thermal Protection System on the leading edge of the left wing, caused by a piece of insulating foam which separated fr! om the left bipod ramp section of the External Tank at 81.7 seconds after launch, and struck the wing in the vicinity of the lower half of Reinforced Carbon-Carbon panel number 8. During re-entry this breach in the Thermal Protection System allowed superheated air to penetrate through the leading edge insulation and progressively melt the aluminum structure of the left wing, resulting in a weakening of the structure until increasing aerodynamic forces caused loss of control, failure of the wing, and breakup of the Orbiter. This breakup occurred in a flight regime in which, given the current design of the Orbiter, there was no possibility for the crew to survive. The organizational causes of this accident are rooted in the Space Shuttle Program's history and culture, including the original compromises that were required to gain approval for the Shuttle, subsequent years of resource constraints, fluctuating priorities, schedule pressures, mischaracterization of the Shuttle as ! operational rather than developmental, and lack of an agreed national vision for human space flight."

ASIN: 3908247705 |
Book Description
This first retrospective book ever presents Brice Marden's paintings and drawings from 1964 to 2002, incorporating many unpublished works. In a seminal in-depth interview, John Yau and Brice Marden explore the artist's creative development. Examining Marden's approach to the pictorial plane and his use of grids, they reflect on his relation to Abstract Expressionism, minimalism, Chinese calligraphy and the European masters. In the course of their conversation, the complex play of objectivity and subjectivity emerges as one of Marden's central issues. An extensive discussion of Marden's use of color and its relation to memories and places, emphasizes the intricate subjective dimensions of Marden's painting, of his sensitive perception of color's personal and cultural connotations. Yau's acute critical observations and Marden's precise reflections on his paintings and their relation to cultural traditions and natural phenomena underline the richness and complexity of Marden's art and provide a unique key to the work of one of the great masters of abstract painting. An indispensable document for anyone interested in Brice Marden and the issues involved in painting today. Edited by Eva Keller.~Interview by John Yau. Book Description
Visual art in the period following World War II witnessed landmark transformations. Today, drawing provides a powerful and vigorous device for reexamining the art of that period, and for renewing appreciation of the extraordinary achievements of well-known artists--and for discovering others. Even though the art of these years saw radical departures and shifts, drawing, which is among the most traditional of media, played a crucial and consistent role in the work of a great majority of the most significant artists. Drawing from the Modern, 1945-1975, surveys the drawing of the period through the unparalleled holdings of the drawings collection of The Museum of Modern Art. The postwar period saw the development of Abstract Expressionism in New York, followed by Pop art, Minimal art, and Conceptual art, and the Museum's collection has exceptional strength in these areas. Abstract drawings by Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Barnett Newman open this volume, followed by works by such key figures as Jasper Johns, Ellsworth Kelly, and Cy Twombly. Next, drawings by Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, and Andy Warhol signal the arrival of a new figurative art at the forefront of creativity. But reductive and abstract art kept pace, and the Museum's collection offers a breathtaking array of drawings by Carl Andre, Dan Flavin, Eva Hesse, Sol LeWitt, Brice Marden, Agnes Martin, Richard Serra, and numerous others. What constitutes "progress" in art is questioned today, and it is no longer possible to see the development of art as a straight line, with synchronicity among places and geographies. But drawing, by its very nature, encourages established understandings to be examined and accepted values to be reappraised. Many of the artists represented here defy easy categorization, including Lee Bontecou, Louise Bourgeois, Vija Celmins, Bruce Conner, Ray Johnson, Jim Nutt, and Myron Stout. The resurgence of European art is represented by drawings by Georg Baselitz, Joseph Beuys, Marcel Broodthaers, Piero Manzoni, Henri Michaux, Mario Merz, and Sigmar Polke, among others. A number the most important artists working in Latin America in the postwar period are also represented, including Jorge de la Vega, Gego, LeAn Ferrari, Halio Oiticica, and Mira Schendel. While neither the collection nor this volume is encyclopedic, the spirit and achievements of postwar art are distilled and amply celebrated here.Customer Reviews:
