The Best EVER!.......2005-10-28
I have not yet tried the Khmer version of the Oxford Picture Dictionary, but I purchased a Spanish one this summer and fell in love with it! It's the best language-learning tool besides an auditory tutorial. This book is wonderful and I recommend it to anyone. I have been taking Spanish for 5 years and I am a fluent speaker, but I was still able to find so many words I had never seen in a regular dictionary and probably never have learned otherwise. WONDERFUL! I can't wait to try this one.
Perfect for Cambodian Beginner!.......2005-09-08
I'm helping a Cambodian Family learn English and picking up some K'hmy myself. I purchased this book after reading other reviews and have found it to be the perfect helper!
This, like the others, in the series are brilliant.......2000-04-21
I have used the Cambodian-English picture dictionary for teaching both English to Khmer speakers and Khmer to English speakers. As a tool for building vocabulary and provoking free conversation on a one-to-one basis, there can be few better. As a self teaching tool it is also invaluable. Above all it is clear, accurate and attractive to work with.

Dictionary.......2006-03-15
The dictionary is good but the Cambodian letters are too small.
You need very good eyes to read them.
good dictionary.......2006-02-01
This is a good, complete dictionary. While it may not cover everything, it is rather extensive, and includes sub-entries for words or expressions that utilize the main entry word which is very helpful. It does not, however, teach pronunciation like a phrase book would. The reader is expected to know how to read and speak Cambodian. I would recommend buying a "learning Cambodian" book in addition to this book.
Just What I Was Looking For!.......2005-09-08
I am helping a Cambodian Family learn English. They do not speak any English. This Dictionary has helped immensely!
Practical working glossary for field work in Cambodia.......1999-11-03
A thorough glossary of the wide-ranging material covered in the long-time standard Foreign Service Institute Khmer language course. Prepared by a widely loved and admired instructor who has prepared a generation of foreign service officers to assume their duties in Cambodia.
Good quick reference. For the price, it's worthwhile........1999-10-24
This is the most available Khmer-English dictionary, so, there's really no basis for comparison. I have seen better Khmer dictionaries but they are hard to find. Bayon Market in Long Beach has better ones.

indispendsible.......2007-08-23
I have a newly arrived Cambodian college student in my home. We both use this dictionary to communicate while we teach each other how to pronounce words in the other person's language. It has led to many funny moments and great companionship!
Good purchase.......2007-08-02
This book is amazing! Most Khmers books that i'd encounter just have an english word, then a khmer translation that's written in Khmer. This book gives a khmer pronunciation that's written in english, as well as Khmer. I think it's a great book. I got it at the library, I will buy it. Also, it's pocket size, very convenient.
Ditto "A Reader" response.......2007-07-23
The review made by "A Reader" couldn't have said it better. 9 times out of ten the word you want is not there and the translations are often bad. NOT a good reference under any circumstances.
The most resourceful dictionary I have for Khmer.......2006-09-30
This is a life saver for those who haven't yet learned Khmer script but must communicate immediately. The dictionary is in a class of its own because everything is transliterated in english. You can look up a word in Khmer via its english transliteration. This has actually helped me out tremendously when first starting out. The transliteration is relatively easy to get used to and there no funny characters, its all standard english alphabet. I would say about 80% of the time I'm able to find the english word I'm looking for to say in Khmer. You may have to be a bit savy with synonymns to find the english word you want to say, but otherwise there are enough entries in this dictionary to get by in most situations.
I've bought a few dictionaries and I can say this is the one I use most because of its format, good print, english transliteration, and it literally fits in my back pocket.
GREAT!.......2003-08-06
This book is amazing! Most Khmers books that i'd encounter just have an english word, then a khmer translation that's written in Khmer. This book gives a khmer pronunciation that's written in english, as well as Khmer. Somebody here gave it a bad review and I really don't understand why? That person said this book can cause embarassment but I disagree! If you can't play ball, don't blame the ball. Most of the words, if not all are accurate. What I think this book lacks is an audio CD that people can listen to. Otherwise, I think it's a great book. I got it at the library, I will buy it. Also, it's pocket size, very convenient.

Good for Cambodians learning English.......2007-07-13
It does not say in the book description, but do not be mistaken: This book is meant for Cambodians to learn English, not for English speakers to learn Cambodian. It is however well presented with beautiful pictures. I just wish they had the equivalent for English speakers to learn Cambodian.
very useful.......2007-02-16
I brought the Picture Dictionary for my grandsons. They are Cambodian learning English. I am visiting them this summer and I only speak English!!!!!
Can you read Cambodian?.......2007-01-24
I can speak Thai and Laotian fairly well, but like many non-native speakers, I can not read the languages at all. I learned to speak by spending a lot of time in the region and by using CD language courses while in America.
But possibly the best adjunct to learning- while living in a foreign country or while at home- is a good phonetic dictionary: a dictionary that lists its words in English, but then gives the word in, say, Laotian, using the English alphabet.
I would select several words/day from a phonetic dictionary and try to use these in either invented conversation when in America or real conversation while overseas. Yes, you don't learn the language structure this way; yes, your pronunciation will often need be corrected by a native speaker [which is great fun in itself!]- BUT, using this method alone, you can talk to people. Clumsy at first, laden with accent and error- yet, you will be able to cummincate in a surpisingly short time. This, after all, is what most of us want to do- we don't need to write the language [at least, not at first], not do we need to speak the King's Cambodian- what we want to do is communicate.
And so, I bought this book, the New Oxford Dictionary: English-Cambodian, naively thinking it must be a phonetic dictionary. It is not.
It gives phrases in English. Then, it gives the same phrase in Cambodian-using the Cambodian alphabet only. So, unless you first know both the Cambodian and English alphabets, this book is absolutely worthless to you as a learning tool. You can not possibly learn anything from it.
Perhaps if you are a Cambodian who knows the English alphabet, this book can help you- but if you know the English alphabet well enough to read the English words, are you really still ignorant of how to say rudimentary phrases in English, such as, say, "what is your name?"
Unless you like bright pictures, don't buy this book. Save your money for a different book or a CD language course, or better yet, for an extended stay in another culture.

For Cambodians.......2002-03-28
I was unaware that this book was for Cambodians. As a relief worker going to Cambodia for a month, I was looking for a good book to take to get me by. The sub-title on the book itself, and not online, is "(for Cambodians)". It would have been nice to know before I bought it.
I can not really rate the content of the book as I can not read it. Pity.
Book Description
This work is reissued as an aid not only to students of the Cambodian language but also to Cambodians residing in English-speaking countries. The glossary includes some 10,000 words, with definitions that are useful and complete at a general level, beyond the specific context of the published readings that the glossary was originally designed to accompany. Although less comprehensive than a dictionary, it fills an important purpose as an inexpensive aid for speakers of either language.

oops.......2002-07-17
I was a bit hasty saying it didn't have IPA transcrptions. It does use a good amount of them...
Good Dictionary.......2002-07-17
Yes, this is one of the best dictionaries around. Although just because a dictionary has many entries doesn't automatically make it a good dictionary. If you want IPA transcriptions, it doesn't have it. If you don't know what IPA is, then it doesn't really matter to you ;-) But I am referring to the old 1977 printing. Maybe they might've changed in the new printing, but I doubt it. I noticed in a few instances that they used one or two word translations, which isn't good dictionary practice, especially in foreign language dictionaries. Anyways, be careful with bootleg copies of these dictionaries being printed from Cambodia or else where. The printing quality is really bad. The subscripts are a pain to make out. My bootleg has a pink cover and yellow fonts. Sometimes there were faded pages. Sometimes letters on the left edge of the page were cut off during scanning. So ask first before you buy.
Hmm... make sure this is the two volume book. Mines is about 1500 pages. If it is 800 or so, then it just might only be and abridged dictionary or just the first volume. If it is the first volume, then you need to ask for the second ;-)
This the best Cambodian-English dictionary that I have seen........1998-01-25
This is the best and most complete Cambodian-English dictionary published. It would be nice if it were released again, there is a need for a work this comprehensive in scope.

A very interesting book. Full of simple ideas which are not only fun for the children but also helps to be more creative and discover more about the world around them.
What a great first craft book...................2002-09-04
What a great book. As a new to homeschooling, and new to America mum, I find this book gives me not just varied & interesting craft projects for my 5yr old daughter but also suggests reading books that blend well with the chosen craft.
For those that are not the best at artistic & creative thinking this book is a must.
So Many Great Ideas.......2001-01-05
This book is full of great craft ideas. My favorite is the materials and activity indexes at the end. Say you have some extra paper towel rolls you want to make a craft with, just look it up, turn to the pages listed and there are several ideas of how to use them in a fun and creative way with your child. This book has inspired me to try some new things - it's bringing out the artist in my child and I. Each craft project has a list of supplies you'll need, steps to make it, and activities you can do with it. Music, movement, dramatic play, math, language, etc. are included with craft ideas. The author also lists related books you can read along with your project to make it a real learning experience. This book is so much fun! It's not just for teachers; it's a must for parents who want to do arts and crafts with their kids.
