5 out of 5 stars Longman Reader 8th ed.: Still the best single volume reader and rhetorical textbook on the market.......2007-10-05

Comprehensive, detailed, informative, and user friendly, the Longman Reader presents a wide ranging, cogently analyzed, and persuasively organized selection of some of the best recent and classic non-fiction writing. I know of no better resource for developing awareness of and fluency in critical reading, writing, and thinking.

    4 out of 5 stars Nice.......2007-07-03

Required reading for my advanced writing class, I was not too excited in the beginning. However, each chapter is concise and suggests ways to enhance your work, without burning you out. Definately pick up a copy for any writing class you take, or if you plan on a career in the field.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Freshman Composition Reader.......2002-04-23

While I am just starting to use this edition (6th) of the text, I have been happy with The Macmillan Reader since I began using the 5th edition in 1999. The chapters on academic reading and the writing process are thorough (but a bit dry), and the portions of the text that deal with each method of development are well-developed and thought out so as to help students get the best idea of what a "good" essay of each variety should and shouldn't include.

The essays that are included are a wonderful assortment of old, tried-and-true and newer pieces from authors of varying backgrounds, ethnicities, and creeds. Students usually enjoy the readings I give them (I'd say 80% approval per piece), and with the average length being 5 pages, reading an essay for class and completing a journal entry is not too heavy of a burden any night of the week. The readings vary from "perfect" examples of what the text describes to even a few "what not to do when you write your own" essays that my students never fail to identify as such.

I feel that this is, by far, the best reader I have used while teaching Freshman English (this is my fourth text), and I plan on sticking with it for years to come. The price is moderate, the readings enjoyable, and the "educational" chapters stated in a way that both the slowest and most advanced student in the class can come to the same understanding of what "good writing" is.

    4 out of 5 stars Worth It!.......2001-06-30

This may be a textbook, but it is definately worth buying. The instructions on writing were clear and helpful, and the essays were wonderful. I can honestly say that I liked almost every essay in the book!

5 out of 5 stars Most useful english book I've ever used. .......2005-11-08

I bought this book for an English class last winter. Now, I'm a music major and I have tons of music books, but I must say that this is the most useful book I have ever bought. Everything is explained in a concise and direct manner, and is easy to find. Whenever I'm in doubt of how to use a punctuation mark, or how to phrase something correctly I always come to this book. Whenever I have to write a paper, this book is right next to me. I love that its relatively small, too. Great book. Highly recomended.

I absolutely loved this book. Although I am not a writer, I know I will defineatly use this book when I am writing technical papers. This book is so nifty. It has examples and an easy table of contents. It's like a bible for writing. :)

In our ever-shrinking world, where popular Western culture seems to have infected every nation on the planet, it is hard to find even a small niche of unspoiled land--forget searching for pristine islands or continents. This is the situation in Alex Garland's debut novel, The Beach. Human progress has reduced Eden to a secret little beach near Thailand. In the tradition of grand adventure novels, Richard, a rootless traveler rambling around Thailand on his way somewhere else, is given a hand-drawn map by a madman who calls himself Daffy Duck. He and two French travelers set out on a journey to find this paradise.

What makes this a truly satisfying novel is the number of levels on which it operates. On the surface it's a fast-paced adventure novel; at another level it explores why we search for these utopias, be they mysterious lost continents or small island communes. Garland weaves a gripping and thought-provoking narrative that suggests we are, in fact, such products of our Western culture that we cannot help but pollute and ultimately destroy the very sanctuary we seek

            Book Description

The Khao San Road, Bangkok--first stop for the hordes of rootless young Westerners traveling in Southeast Asia. On Richard's first night there, in a low-budget guest house, a fellow traveler slashes his wrists, bequeathing to Richard a meticulously drawn map to "the Beach."

The Beach, as Richard has come to learn, is the subject of a legend among young travelers in Asia: a lagoon hidden from the sea, with white sand and coral gardens, freshwater falls surrounded by jungle, plants untouched for a thousand years. There, it is rumored, a carefully selected international few have settled in a communal Eden.

Haunted by the figure of Mr. Duck--the name by which the Thai police have identified the dead man--and his own obsession with Vietnam movies, Richard sets off with a young French couple to an island hidden away in an archipelago forbidden to tourists. They discover the Beach, and it is as beautiful and idyllic as it is reputed to be. Yet over time it becomes clear that Beach culture, as Richard calls it, has troubling, even deadly, undercurrents.

Spellbinding and hallucinogenic, The Beach is a look at a generation in their twenties, who, burdened with the legacy of the preceding generation and saturated by popular culture, long for an unruined landscape, but find it difficult to experience the world firsthand.

5 out of 5 stars College Student Says: Freakin' Read This Book.......2007-10-02

SUCH a sweet book. Don't be fooled by the (piss-poor) movie adaptation -- the book is excellent. You won't be disappointed. I read this book while living on a beach in Greece and it's still my all-time favorite. If you're into travelling to insane places and creating adventure, or doing anything else that's cool, Garland's The Beach is almost a bible.

5 out of 5 stars The Beach! Period!.......2007-08-09

Since I just came from summer vacation, and decided I ll try my luck at some light hearted reviewing, i couldn't resist reviewing one of my all time favorite books. What can I say. Original and gribbing and mmoody that it's one of a kind. I don't think Alex Garlan will ever know how to write a story this deep an dgripping again!

5 out of 5 stars Great... but don't buy the Penguin edition unless you are a grade schooler..........2007-07-23

This is an amazing novel touching on dysutopian themes. I have nothing to add to the previous reviews other than DO NOT BUY THE PENGUIN VERSION UNLESS YOU ARE IN GRADE SCHOOL. Unfortunately, this is this first version that comes up in the search. It is roughly 1/4 the size of the original. It is a horribly stripped down version (for a mature reader). The fact that it was even readable is a tribute to the original text.

            4 out of 5 stars A vivid, powerful and fast-moving Thai adventure!.......2007-06-04

This is a great read... a powerful and disturbing adventure. The story follows a young backpacker Richard in a fascinating fast-paced trip to the hidden Thai island, Ko Samui, where the seemingly perfect community quickly turns scary and dangerous.
The end is different to the film The Beach (which I watched first) but I dont think I have a preference. Both endings are equally vivid and cleverly thought out.

            5 out of 5 stars Alex Garland's The Beach.......2007-05-23

I had heard of this book but only decided to give it a go because it was a perfect partner with You Are Here (Steve Horsfall). The Beach is in many respects a modern version of "Lord of the Flies". The premise of the story focuses on Richard, a young traveler in search of a hidden beach were there are white sands and clear waters and a life of luxury waiting to be found. Eventually paradise falls apart as more and more discover it. Excellent, I will now try the film although I'm told it's not so good.

                  Book Description

Diplomacy demands a certain style: no capital can compete with Washington, D.C. for the sheer presence, the elegance, and diversity of its diplomatic headquarters. All along the boulevards representatives of world governments live and work in residences that are technically the territory of each nation. Recently, countries like Italy have chosen to build embassies and residences that project their political purpose to the passerby.

Walk through the gates of the mansions on Massachusetts Avenue and enter an array of interiors, gardens, and offices that are designs for international living. The splendid images in this book, captured by Antonio Castañeda-Buraglia, take the reader into the rooms in the heart of buildings where diplomatic history lives. The forty-five homes here are the U.S. addresses for the best art, handicrafts, garden styles, interior decoration, and often, personal history, of diplomats who represent the world to America. These details taken together present a world of international design choices -each room with a very worldy purpose.
