Great on financials, Lacking on creativity........2002-06-02
I was amazed how informative this book is when it comes to getting the business started financially and how to devise a marketing plan, find employees and contractors, and build a readership. However, the book really gives no information on the creative aspect of the business, such as how to pick a layout scheme or weed out useless content. I feel more confident on the business side now, but am still lost as far as building the magazine itself.
Starting and Running a Successful Newsletter or Magazine.......2002-04-28
Woodard does an excellent job of explaining the financial aspects of magazine publishing. She also gives the reader many ideas on targeting an audience and advertisers. However, the book may fall a little short on creativity, such as how to color outside the lines in finding new ways to sell subscriptions and gain advertisers. Direct mailing and newstands can only go so far. Overall, the book allows the reader to get a good handle on the basics of starting a magazine.

I read three books like this one before starting my magazine. This one was definitely the most complete and understandable. She doesn't cover prining, computers or production technology. And she doesn't talk about writing or editing. But she does a great job showing you how to get subscribers, sell ads, raise startup money, and hire good people. If you want to start a magazine, forget the other books and read this one.
Disappointed.......2001-08-20
Admittedly, I was disappointed when I sifted through the pages to find that many subjects listed in the content pages had been barely discussed in depth. Although this is a book about the business of publishing it fails to cover adequately the subject of editorial schedules and disseminating information. The layout makes it difficult (I found) to take in the information and use it to your benefit. There are very little illustrations or visual examples of layouts to guide the inexperienced publisher. Much of the information is written in a general nature and is basically just common sense. I found myself, after reading a few chapters, asking many questions and the answers, I'm afraid, are not in this book. As someone new to the publishing business I was looking for something that I could use as a reliable guide taking me through the process step by step. Alas, this book did not meet my needs.
Solid book.......2001-02-13
Don't let the raw art of the cover deceive you: this is a very good book. It complements Samir Husni's Launch your Magazine, with solid information on the commercial side of a magazine: how to study your market before you launch that dream magazine, what circulation is (and how to target for your audience), how to estimate your fixed and variable publishing costs (and how to balance them with your estimated revenues so as to break-even and then make a profit), and lots of other details. There are a few obvious pieces of info, but I read it twice, and marvelled at the insights and expertise which Cheryl Woodard offers us for a bargain price. Now I guess I'll read it a third time.

This reference book profiles "corporate magazines," those sponsored by and produced for a single business firm. Some of these periodicals are internal, aimed at the company's own employees and retirees. Others are mainly external and are directed at a broader audience of stockholders, customers, and readers outside the corporation's immediate "family." Still others have a dual role, and target both internal and external audiences. Some of these magazines are quite old--the oldest profiled here dates from 1865. Some have enormous circulations, the largest having reached nearly 12 million bimonthly, though they rarely produce circulation revenue. This is the first book to fully consider this genre of magazine publishing. Journalism and communication scholars examine a representative sample of 52 of these magazines in individual descriptive essays, each with appended publishing history and information sources. Bibliographic information is necessarily limited. Entries are arranged alphabetically and each entry appears in additional appendixes which classify the profiled magazine by founding date and geographic location. An end-of-volume appendix provides brief data on 232 additional magazines.

this book is really cool. i bring it on trips,car rides,or a rainy day. i love it and it even has tips on shadeing,bleanding,and al sorts of artisit things. there are the origanel pictures in the back of the book so that you can copy them or color them the way you whant. this is a great ag book.

Firstly, this is not an art studio as American Girl claims. It is a very nicely packaged fold-out sort of binder that contains some colored pencils and a tool to use for "blending." In reality, it is a glorified coloring book. Don't look for water colors, because they aren't there.
Felicity fans can color in 24 drawings, and there are some blank pages as well. If American Girl wanted to produce an actual art studio, they could have taken the opportunity to produce something beautiful and educational that was actually worth the price. Gentry girls in Williamsburg were often taught to draw and do watercolors. American Girl just missed the boat here.

the blending tool gets dirty after one time. it can't even make different colors. it just makes it look painted.all my friends, licy,natalie, lilyann, and martha,agree that the price is way too high. american girl claims this is an art studio, but this is just a coloring book with regular colored pencils and a white marker that makes the picture look muddy. i wasn't very satisfied.
An expensive coloring book -- not an art studio.......2006-03-20
This item is described as an art studio and claims that 5 'watercolor' pencils can be used to blend and create all sorts of other colors to make watercolor pictures resembling those in the American Girl books. My daughter purchased it for $14.95 -- and was almost in tears after she realized that the watercolor pencils were ordinary colored pencils, and that there was no way to blend them at all. The 'blending tool' was apparently a wet magic marker with no color, but as soon as she tried to use it once, for example to get purple out of red and blue, it became dirty and could not be used again.

this was an o.k book. ag claimed that the 'watercolor' pencils could make different colors but they didn't. the blending tool got dirty after a little bit, and when i used it for about the third time, it just got the colors smudged and dirty. i did like the liiustrations, though.i wish ag would lower their prices.
