Great Book!.......2007-01-11
Learning Italian for an upcoming trip....this school book is the key...it's easier to follow (as it's intended for High School)than other self help books....and is full of useful information...I would recommend the workbook to go with it...or just make copies of the pages to work with....Great book...it is helping me a lot.

This is an alright text book. It does what it's meant to do. A person can learn Italian from this book as long as they are also in a class as well, but it definately has some flaws. One -it needs more examples of some of the more difficult grammar points. Two - the order is strange. Why did you start with avere? Somehow essere seems like a better place to start. And the chapter themes! They pretend that they have chapters arranged by topic, but it seems very haphazard to me. Also, several major grammatical topics are missing from this book, and as a result, many of my teachers have had to give us multiple hand outs to compensate. It's ok - but it could be a lot better.
Invaluable resource.......2003-01-14
I read this entire book across two college semesters before moving to Italy. After having spent $500 or so on Italian language books, this is one of the few that was worth the money. Even though I speak fluently, I still refer to this book frequently to resolve difficult tense questions or clarify grammar details. I highly recommend this book to any serious student.
Wait for the next edition, or stick to the 4th!!.......2002-07-28
I took 3 semesters of Italian, with each semester covering 1/3 of the book, so I completed the entire book. This book is good if you follow it in a traditional classroom setting, especially since the proffessor pointed out all the mistakes in this book, which unfortunately, are quite numerous for a textbook. I have also checked out the 4th edition, which is much better than this one as it is better structured and contains useful charts,(which are now omitted) and is thoroughly proofread. The 6th edition just came out, so hopefully it is an improvement from the 5th.

Good Book But Too Expensive and What the Heck is a Bind-In Card???.......2007-08-21
The book is interesting and thorough...but it costs way too much. Also, what is a bind-in card? I asked three sellers and even THEY didn't know what that meant. Fortunately the book is usually used for two semesters of Italian, i.e. Italian 101 and 102.
It didn't have everything.......2005-10-03
This book all though it had the bind in card from the publisher did not have the book key for quia.com which was what my professor uses. I bought online because I thought I was getting everything for less but it ended up being the same amount as if I had bought it in the school bookstore because I also had to purchase the quia key. So the moral of the story is that if you need quia just buy it at the bookstore and then you won't have to wait for your book.

PREGO! : visually-stimulating 7th edition has online learning center .......2007-09-06
PREGO! is an excellent and very popular classroom introductory Italian program, here in its 7th incarnation. Lazzarino and coauthors have created a beautiful, easy-on-the eyes layout with interesting cultural readings and charming illustrations and cute cartoons. (And it's good to see different ethnicities represented in the illustrations.) I began my studies with an earlier edition of PREGO! and have a fondness for this 2-semester program. I've looked at a number of other introductory Italian language textbooks and I believe PREGO! remains a best-seller because it provides a fun and attractive approach to rigorous grammar study. It appears to me to be the most polished and visually stimulating textbook on the market, with updated cultural scenarios (including the increasingly multicultural Italian demographic).
The supplemental DVD follows an "American" journalist in Italy and his Italian friend through chapter-related scenarios. It is a well-produced and entertaining enough and provides an opportunity for listening comprehension (with optional Italian subtitles -- better, I believe, in aiding Italian study than having English subtitles).
Students will likely get the most bang out of these materials in a formal study (classroom or tutor) setting. Those who can easily afford these (relatively expensive) materials might want to purchase them simply for a good workout.

I believe you have to pay for access to the online workbook and lab manual if you choose not to purchase the print versions.
N.B. the "buy together" links don't always link the correct editions of supplementary materials, so use the advanced book search or advanced DVD search to choose the proper materials (if edition is listed correctly) to load into your shopping cart. Also available: AVANTI! by Janice Aski, et al, is a more communicative approach, introductory Italian language program from McGraw-Hill. Avanti!'s emphasis is on repetition. There is much of value in both of these programs. Avanti! is also somewhat expensive and should also be used with other students with an instructor and/or tutor. Those who cannot attend a college course might fare better with the purchase of any number of text + audio programs or all-audio programs (Living Language, etc.) and inexpensive grammar workbooks.
One of the most beautiful countries on Earth is waiting for you -- and your experience will be so much richer with Italian language skills. Please don't be turned off by the fact that acquiring advanced language skills is for most a long-term endeavor. I believe those new to the experience will find the "discipline" of language study very rewarding.

Wrong Workbook.......2006-03-15
The workbook sent was not the 6th edition as advertised but rather the 4th edition and therefore I was force to buy another workbook. This was $50 wasted.

I was very dissatisfied with my purchase and I returned it. The number of the edition should be prominently displayed in the information about the book. I had to pay for S & H, and I have not received a refund jet.

A BETTER CHOICE OF BOOK FOR THE STUDENT STUDYING ITALIAN INDEPENDENTLY IS, "LIVING ITALIAN" BY MARIA VALGIMIGLI. This workbook is filled with excercises that challenge the introductory Italian student without intimidating them. It provides a solid foundation in Italian grammar as well as presents modern terminologies one may not generally find in a textbook.

In response to the interest of millions of Patrick O'Brian fans, here is the final, partial installment of the Aubrey/Maturin series.
Blue at the Mizzen (novel #20) ended with Jack Aubrey getting the news, in Chile, of his elevation to flag rank: Rear Admiral of the Blue Squadron, with orders to sail to the South Africa station. The next novel, unfinished and untitled at the time of the author's death, would have been the chronicle of that mission, and much else besides. The three chapters left on O'Brian's desk at the time of his death are presented here both in printed version—including his corrections to the typescript—and a facsimile of his manuscript, which goes several pages beyond the end of the typescript to include a duel between Stephen Maturin and an impertinent officer who is courting his fiancée.
Of course we would rather have had the whole story; instead we have this proof that O'Brian's powers of observation, his humor, and his understanding of his characters were undiminished to the end.

After spending countless hours with Aubrey and Maturin, this book provides the little bit of closure necessary to walk away without total sadness and frustration. The untimely, but inevitable death of Patrick O'Brian leaves us with longing and wonder about Aubrey and Maturin's ultimate fate. However, viewing the author's actual hand written manuscript somehow leaves one with a connection to the characters and the author. Get this book, read what there is left of these two unforgettable characters, and realize in life there is "not a moment to lose."

The book only gets started and part of it is reproduced script from O'brians hand. It is quite hard to read. This book is a must have for died in the wool Aubrey/Maturin fans, but casural readers would enjoy other of the series more.
The Final Voyage.......2007-06-28
Truely Patrick O'Brian's final voyage. After reading the 20 book set I went into mourning while reading the 21st. I have never been so attached to a group of characters as Aubery and Company and of course to their creator. The 21st book, O'Brian's hand written draft was very personal... and very sad. It is one of my most treasured books.
Deserves a better ending!.......2007-05-17
Having recently read all of the Aubrey/Maturin Series, I was glad to have the opportunity to read the unfinished draft. Like many others, I wished that the last number of pages were typed. It was obvious that Mr. O'Brian had plans for many more episodes and I regret that his fans will not see more of Aubrey/Maturin. I will miss Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin. I have on occasioned thought that I would not want to die before finishing an exceptionally good book. Now I know what that might be like!
Loss of two friends. .......2007-05-12
I wasn't sure I wanted to read the last book knowing that it was unfinished, but I'm glad I did. I found Patrick O'Brian's hand writing very hard to read to I didn't read those very far. I do feel the sadness of not knowing how Captain Jack and Dr. Maturin turnout, maybe it's the best. It is a peaceful thought to think that they are still sailing out there some where and maybe I'll see the HMS Surprise on the horizon from my boat some day. I still suggest stopping at book 20 and the good news that it ends with.
