Oxford Dictionary Spanish/English.......2007-03-10

This is an excellent resource for both English and Spanish speaking individuals. I use it in my classroom and it is invaluable. Volunteer tutors rely on this to find just the right word while trying to explain something to students. The center section about cultural items is interesting and can be used for classroom instruction.

Great dictionary, same as the Oxford Spanish Desk Dictionary.......2007-02-28

I did a lot of comparison shopping among Spanish-English dictionaries of similar size (or slightly smaller) and like this one best.

I wanted to mention an interesting detail: For some inexplicable reason, the Oxford Spanish Desk Dictionary and the Pocket Oxford Spanish Dictionary appear to be the same book, and are the same size. The only difference is that the "desk" dictionary is the hardcover version (the listed dimensions are very slightly larger because the hard cover extends beyond the page edges just a bit). The "pocket" dictionary is just the softcover version of same.

Now, why the "desk" version and the "pocket" version are the same size, I'll never know -- and, in fact, this "pocket" dictionary is much larger than a pocket-sized paperback -- not a big deal as long as you know what you are getting.

Nonetheless, a great dictionary, and I highly recommend it. I just thought this was an interesting bit of information.

Extremely practical and useful.......2007-01-16

This dictionary's best feature is its integration of idioms and phrases with regular entries. You can look up the first word of an idiom or phrase in either language (such has "home plate," "bittersweet," "take part in," etc.) and find the equivalent in the other language. It's a great conversational tool. It also notes which words and phrases are common in which countries. The only drawback is that if you want to read literature or other more complex works, you will probably need a more extensive dictionary.

not pocket-sized.......2006-11-25

This dictionary is not at all meant to be carried around in the streets. It is big even for me, a birder who routinely travels with heavy bird identification guides.

In the middle of the dictionary there is a section on hispanic culture and another on anglo culture, which remind me of "Lonely Planet" guidebooks. These take more away from the efficiency of the book. When I am in, say, Uruguay, I will refer to my guidebook for that information.

The words I did not find while reading a short article were: mesurado, sosiego, and cabal. Also, I only found about 50% of the Mexican slang words I could think of.

The things I always wished I had in my dictionary while learning English (from French), a bilingual conversion table for those maddening units of measurements and a bilingual map of the world, were as usual absent.

Among the better Spanish-English dictionaries.......2006-09-10

My Master's thesis was a review and rating of Spanish-English dictionaries. I find this dictionary, like all the other Oxford dictionaries, to be a good choice.

Here are a few of the factors which distinguish a good bilingual dictionary from a bad one.

To begin with, ignore certain publishers' marketing ploys such as entry and translation counts. They say nothing about the value of the words chosen.

The first valid factor to consider is lexicographic technique. A bad dictionary simply lists translations. Take, for example, the entry in the Cassell's Spanish Dictionary under the English headword loop: "lazo, gaza, nudo; ojal, presilla, alamar; anillo; recodo, comba, curva, vuelta," etc. For the English reader writing in Spanish, this is hopelessly inadequate, as the dictionary provides no clue as to which translation to use in which situation.

Compare the treatment of the same word in the far superior American Heritage Spanish Dictionary. "(length of line) lazo; (coil) vuelta; (bend) curva; (circular path) vuelta, circuito; (fastener) presilla" etc. Here, the user is given glosses in the native language to assist in identifying the right word for the context. Example sentences are also a tremendous help. Oxford is excellent in this respect, presenting good information to guide users through the semantic and syntactic complexities.

Second, a good dictionary should maintain an up-to-date lexicon, including such cultural and technological additions to the language as "baby sitter," "hostile takeover," "software," "flash drive." Oxford is a leader in this respect; its frequent revisions are more than mere window dressing and do a creditable job of covering the most recent additions to the language.

Third, idioms, slang, and cusswords can present real problems to the language learner, and a dictionary needs to handle them in a clear and frank fashion. This dictionary gets it right, giving stylistic equivalents for translations as well as clear advice to the user.

Be careful when you choose a bilingual dictionary, as some of the choices--Cassell's and Vox, for example--are downright terrible. The field of large dictionaries stays relatively static over time, and the best choices in it by far are Oxford, Collins, and Larousse. The field of small dictionaries, on the other hand, has many more players. While not the only good choice, Oxford is a dictionary you would certainly be pleased with.

This is an excellent reference for students of English or Spanish. The book is attractive and durable, with a vinyl cover, and convenient size. The type is readable, with the word to be defined printed in blue for easy lookup. I have used this dictionary extensively in my adult ESL classes and the students have really made use of them.

I have a friend who is a web designer, and she uses the nickname angel. So I was delighted when I came across this CD Rom and now have the perfect gift for xmas (she knows so not spoiling!) There 100s of full colour angels in a large "paper-doll' size book. The images from Victorian Angels and they are gorgeous full colour depictions. This image are HUGE, approximately 800x1500 pixels is average size, in TIF format, perfect for web designs or for use in more personal graphics just as a web page or "siggies".

All are open CD ROM, too, so no bother with scanning them. They are Permission free use, so there is no limit but you imagination and you talent. Nothing to install, you can just open the file from your CD Rom Dive and access the images directly. Great for Paint Shop Pro use.

Yes, I hablo espanol........2000-06-02

I have chosen to review this book in English for a very good reason. I run a computer training school in Northern California. We have had a flood of interest from a very large community of Spanish speaking clients that have been frustrated with traditional computer schools that only teach in English. The students all report that it is difficult enough learning Microsoft Office 2000 applications, but even more difficult with the language handicap. These books have leveled the playing field. Now our students can focus on the application in Spanish while learning English at another school. Our lectures are still in English, but these books make it very easy to follow along. We are all pleased with the ease and clarity in which the books are written. If you know of anyone that is struggling with both English and Office 2000, I highly recommend this book. The book comes along with a CD that has examples, audio clips, text and lessons, all in Spanish. As an added bonus, there is included, a copy of Windows 98 second edition that converts your installation of Windows 98 from English to Spanish, making the lessons very easy to follow. We advise our students to focus on learning how to use the applications, but most jobs here, at least, require at least a competent level of English comprehension.

This title was named a 2004 Sydney Taylor Honor Book by the Association of Jewish Libraries.

Twelve-year-old Elvina is the granddaughter of the great Rabbi Rashi. She has a curious and lively nature and a thirst for knowledge. Her goodness of heart and her knowledge of Torah lead her to assist a wounded Crusader, despite his the cruelty the Crusaders show to the Jews in 11th century France. The guardian angel of the title provides a listener for Elvina's thoughts and worries. Elvina and her grandfather are real historical figures, and the real Elvina was "highly regarded during her lifetime for her knowledge and wisdom."

This chapter book is translated from French, which may account for the strange stylistic choice to shift back and forth between Elvina's voice and an omniscient narrator. Despite this odd structure, the story is easy to follow and the language flows. Elvina is a likeable character, very lively and full of interesting thoughts. The author breathes life into the descriptions of medieval customs, so that they feel natural rather than forced and educational. Additionally, Elvina truly lives her Judaism, rather than mouthing pieties as characters in historical novels often do. It infuses her life, not only in her behavior but also in her decisions, her fears, and her joys.

Historical Fiction At A Nice Pace.......2005-01-04

A Jewish girl named Elvina who knows how to read and write is living in France, 1096. Crusaders have entered her village, Troyes, and are worrying everyone in the Jewish community. During this troubling time, Elvina starts to talk to her Mazal, or guardian angel. When she hides a Crusader who does not want to fight, her life changes, but for better or for worse, you will have to read the book.

If you like historical fiction, then you would really like this book. I do not like historical fiction that much, but this book went at a nice pace and it made you want to know what happened to the characters. The only thing that I didn't like was that sometimes the narrative would change from 3rd to 1st person. Other than that, it had a pretty good plot and it was pretty entertaining. Sylvie Weil could have made the book better by keeping the narratives the same throughout the book, but it was good overall.
