Could be better.......2006-03-11
I finished up 2nd year college Spanish with this series and found the format a bit confusing. And using three books for one class is not very convenient. Although the vocabulary and language structures progress together in all three books, their format is not very conducive to learning unless you really enjoy just curling up with a good textbook and reading it over and over again. However, there are a couple of positive features. The lengua book has a section in every chapter called "Ojo!" which helps with commonly confused words and concepts. The Cultura book has a few interesting readings that introduced some history and political issues in Spanish-speaking countries that I didn't know about, but now want to found out more about.

Before I bought the Pasajes series, I was relieved to see the (then) mostly positive reviews. However, I really feel like the overall review score of 4.5 stars is very, very misleading. I would not, in good faith, be able to recommend this series of books for learning Spanish.
This series of books was VERY confusing and EXTREMELY difficult to work with. Some of the many issues with using this series of books to learn spanish:
1) the concepts are not clearly explained (they invented a "new" english word for one) and the exercises are excessively complicated and do not give you enough practice with the vocabulary/concepts to feel confident using them.
2) Frequently, new words, phrases and concepts are introduced in the middle of a lesson about something else, via a footnote, with no further explaination provided!! This is SUPER frustrating and distracting!
3) Using this series of books is very cumbersome, the books are not well coordinated with one another, and do not appear to reinforce each other's concepts or vocabulary.
I'm very sorry, but these books are just terrible, and 4.5 stars is not at all reflective of the quality of these books... Using this series of books has taken ALL the fun out of learning Spanish, which I used to enjoy. If you have the option to use different books, take it!
Confusing text lacking meaningful exercises.......2005-01-28
I have used Pasajes: Lengua and Pasajes: Cultura for two years now for Intermediate Spanish and have found it quite difficult to use and to appeal to the interest of the students. Tons of vocabulary words are presented at the beginning of each chapter in Pasajes: Lengua with some weird pictures and no follow-up dialogue to reinforce or recycle the vocabulary. Then quite a few difficult grammatical concepts are presented in each chapter and often mixed together into several confusing exercises which don't allow the student to sort out the usage of one concept before being bombarded with another one. I would use this approach if I purposely wanted to confuse and lose my students. Often the students are at a loss as to how to react to the exercises and instructions. Sometimes out of frustration, I have to simply change the instructions of the exercises or bring in my own exercises to supplement the text. I have noticed a decline in the proficiency of our students after using this text and a definite lack of interest in the material. After over twenty years of teaching, I am no newcomer to teaching languages and only continue to use the text because some faculty who are recent graduates have latched onto it. The bottom line for me is that in order to do a good job using this text, the instructor must basically rewrite the text and bring in a lot of original material to achieve the desired results with students. A class that used to be a lot of fun for me with wonderful interactions with my students, now is often drudgery.
Excellent text........2003-09-22
I've had my experiences with a wide variety of Spanish language learning materials, and out of the textbooks I've used, the Pasajes series (especially when used as a series, including the Literatura and Cultura components) ranks as the best. Pasajes strikes the perfect balance between a text for rank beginners and advanced students.
It is abundantly clear to me that the authors of this wonderful work are acutely aware of the difficulties the student of Spanish -- especially intermediate Spanish -- is likely to face. As such, the text reads as more of a "conversation" between "teacher" and student, then a stern, authoratative text handing down the received wisdom to your unworthy soul. A real pleasure to work through.
Although one is more likely to encounter this text as part of a college Spanish program, I would highly recommend it to any serious Spanish student intent on reaching a higher level of accomplishment.

just wanna post a follow up to one of the other reviewers of this book who said this text is too political. WAKE UP UGLY AMERICAN.
this is about the spanish language, and in Latin America, its not an opinion to say "the workers are being exploited" its the reality. more and more gringos are learning spanish and are realizing our countries hands arn't so clean when it comes to the spanish speaking world. in my opinion, this book is not political. it doesnt even touch on the violent US-imperialism that has been oppressive to this region since the end of colonialism! read your history and then you can enjoy this textbook with its helpful grammar exercises.
A good tool for self-teaching.......2005-11-03
There are many Spanish textbooks out there, but this is one of the few that makes teaching yourself easy and interesting. (Learning at school as I did kills any enthusiasm for studying. To catch up on two chapters when I switched into Spanish IV, I studied constantly - with enthusiasm and interest - for two days and was able to learn them well enough to take the chapter tests. But as soon as I got into the class, my enjoyment of studying immediately vanished as we dragged through the lessons with much busywork and silly activities).
Although it begins with the basics, this book is not designed for beginners. Rather, it reviews all Spanish from the basics to more complicated concepts for those who already have a base in Spanish.
It's a fast but thorough review that gives an overview of all the rules and provides the nitty-gritty details and exceptions to help you completely master the basics, something probably not done in lower-level Spanish. It's designed for students who have already taken about two years of Spanish.
The book does teach vocabulary, but its main emphasis (and strength) is in grammar, so make sure you have a solid vocabulary. Particularly helpful is the "Ojo" section, which explains common mistakes, such as words that are the same in English but different in Spanish, "false friends" (what appear to be cognates but are actually unrelated words), etc. (Examples: to work = trabajar (as in a job or labor); funcionar (as in a machine, watch, TV, etc.). Another: to support, which can be sostener, mantener, apoyar, all depending on the specific usage.)
With the textbook and the workbook, you can go through the book quite quickly. Ignore the exercises in the book itself and the video sections, because the workbook is really the best way to practice what you learn.
The vocabulary taught is sometimes silly but a lot more useful than certain other textbooks. However, it doesn't prepare you for actual conservations, only school-like discussions about the environment, gender roles, etc.
Overall, it's a very good textbook. It's a bit expensive to buy on your own, so I'd suggest either taking a class which uses this book, or finding a cheap used copy.
Too much politics and too complicated.......2003-04-28
Why must today's textbooks writers nearly always revert to political themes? From Chapter 1 (Tipos y estereotipos) the authors LIBERALLY (no pun intended) salt the text with their political philosophy. Another example is the slum lord who exploits the poor single mother in Chapter 5. Given that today's textbook writers are graduates of the 60's and 70's, I guess this is no surprise. That said, I also find the layout of the book wonting and too complex. Between the textbook, the accompanying "Cultura" book, the combined lab/workbook and the tapes, you're looking at some serious coin to buy supporting materials for an intermediate Spanish course. Add in a dictionary, 501 Spanish Verbs, a tape recorder/player and notebook, and I have to carry it all around in a small suitcase. It also becomes challenging to coordinate all the assignments between the different books. Enough with "learning systems". What ever happened to a simple, straight-forward textbook? Of course, there's even more stuff for the instructor (videos, instructor's manual). Surely these good caring folks couldn't be that heavily motivated by money -- could they?
A magnificent 2nd year textbook.......2002-05-24
I have taught out of Pasajes Lengua from time to time over the last 10 years throughout several editions. The Fifth Edition, with Rodney Bransdorfer added to the author team, appears to be their hottest edition yet. The grammar activities are better organized and cleaned up, and the presentation in the book is sharper and more comprehensible than ever. While many texts just lose steam after several editions, Pasajes has hit its peak!
Great Supplemental Text.......2000-02-03
I use this book with my fourth year High School Spanish class. I have been using it for 3 years and have found it to be an excellent basis for conversation practice. The content in most of the chapters is interesting to the students so they enjoy talking about the subjects and learning the vocabulary by using it in real discussions. It's a buy!

This was purchased for my teenage daughter who wanted to learn caligraphy to add verses onto her watercolor paintings. She has learned it takes a lot of practice. This is a very nice set with good supplies for someone who wants to learn caligraphy.

I bought this as a Christmas gift for my daughter who LOVES to write and draw all over EVERYTHING and it kept her occupied for hours. However, the ink does get all over the place if you aren't careful. She has enjoyed it alot and the price is good.

When I was a teenager, my father bought me a galigraphy set for Yule one year. I loved that set, it was so easy to read. This set looks very much like the one he gave me. So I am going to order is and I will let you kmow how it goes
Not really *complete* but could be worse.......2004-03-05
I was excited to get a 'complete' kit for beginners, as that is what I am to calligraphy--a total novice. Instead of being pleased, I am mostly annoyed that I need to go out and buy a whole new "beginner's kit" of all the things this one is lacking.
The Pros:
* The booklet is small and gets to the point. There is not lengthy history of calligraphy as an art form to wade through before you get to the actual instruction.
* The construction of the "book" (actually a book shape that holds the booklet and all of the pens) is very good. I haven't lost any of the pieces yet.
* The pens seem to offer the experienced beginner several options with nib size and colored inks.
The Cons:
* The booklet tells you about letter spacing in one paragraph. So it is insinuated that "round" letters should be bigger than the other letters so that they appear truly round, but you only get one example, and it never comes up again. There should have been a practice sheet with a few vertical lines as well as horizontal, to help you get the hang of the spacing.
* The booklet does not show you the letterforms as they should be sized in relation to the practice sheet. Again, you get one example showing you the relative height of capital and lowercase letters, but you don't get to see a whole alphabet sized up against the practice sheet gridlines.
* The most frustrating thing: there is a single sheet of paper with gridlines, that you place under the practice paper--but the "practice" paper is so heavy that you cannot see through it! You can only see through the nicer parchment that is provided. So I have used up all of my parchment with practice work.
* The alphabets in the book are very simple (good for a beginner) but also very boring--I would have liked to see at least one really beautiful curvy alphabet at the end to look forward to...
* Beginners are encouraged to use the felt-tipped pen to get the hang of letterforms before moving on to the nib pens--so why not have two felt pens (a thick and a thin) and two nib pens instead of only one thick felt and three nibs?--I am still just a beginner!
* There are no instructions for how to clean the pens or switch from one colored ink to another. There must be tricks or techniques that I should be using.
Final thoughts: This was a great idea that was poorly executed. I think beginners would be more frustrated by their limitations with this set than inspired to progress.
I am buying a couple of Margaret Shephard books to get (a) more alphabets, and (b) more in-depth spacing and construction help, as well as trying to track down a big pad of practice paper and some more felt pens.
