Book Description
A unique color dictionary of international urban design and phenomenal photographic reference,
The Color of Cities, by Lois Swirnoff, documents the distinctive color characteristics of cities in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, Latin America and Asia. The book features beautiful original color photographs by the author who is an acclaimed artist and world authority on the three-dimensional use of color. Topics covered include how cultural color preferences are grounded in vision differences in different geographic locations and the similarities within diversity in streets, facades, plazas, boundaries, and marketplaces. A reference section provides you with typical color palettes for each country, complete with thumbnail photographic examples.

The Color of Cities.......2001-02-14
As a colorist for the last twenty years, specializing in exterior building color I was sorely disappointed to read this book. Basically everything she had to say of import could have be said in an essay. The author has a wonderful vocabulary but after wading through all the prose one finds there is liitle said that isn't entirely obvious. I was left with the impression that this book was concieved as a great excuse to travel to the world's really wonderful places. You will note that she not traveled to Lubbock or Erzerum.

A visual, historical and sociological treat!.......2000-09-20
The is a somewhat remarkable book, worth the high price tag. Swirnoff tackles an unique issue: the role of color/light in forming a particular city's identity. She cites (and sites) examples from New York to Santa Fe to Venice to Mexico to Paris to the Caribbean to Stockholm to Japan and many others, too. The book has many photo examples, both black-and-white and color, as well as quite thought provoking written discussion. This is a much-needed book, focusing on an important issue of local identity at a time when globalization challenges the specifics of space and place. The book would appeal to travellers, visual artists, architects, sociologists, urban planners and many others.

Customer Reviews:
Great material, cheap quality.......2006-01-24
This book seems to cover the material very well. I say it seems to because the copy I received is a cheap xerox and it was immediately apparent that it wasn't going to hold up to repeated use. After browsing through it once the covers had already started to split and I had to return it. I expect better for $83.00.
the BEST serious perspective drawing book available.......2005-04-06
This book contains the best most thoroughly explained and demonstrated professional use of the measuring point (MP) direct measure perspective method, as well as the other common perspective methods, that I have ever seen in my 30 years as an architect. For those who want to know how to fish rather than be given a fish, this is THE book. If you own only one book on perspective drawing, this should be that book. If you wish, combine it with Architectural Graphics by Francis D. K. Ching, Drawing as a Means to Architecture and Design Drawing both by William Kirby Lockard and Perspective for Interior Designers (especially interesting for deriving and understanding original perspective setups from finished drawings or photographs) by John Pile, and you will never need buy another book on perspective drawing (Of course I own several others anyway). The really nice thing about the MP method is that you can accurately determine the finished size of your perspective drawing before doing the drawing AND project scaled measurements directly into the perspective as you create it. No one explains and demonstrates this more completely and effectively than Helms. Shade and shadow are just as carefully discussed and illustrated. Short cut methods and techniques for getting out trouble, such as finding your way when no vanishing points seem available, are covered with the underlying understanding always near and emphasized to lend the necessary support. This unpretentious book is not an outstanding demonstration of rendering technique and does not intend to be; many others have done that well enough. But, better than any other, the book reveals the practical inner workings of perspective drawing, step-by-step. Job very well done Michael E. Helms! Thank you.

Book Description
Writing from inside the discipline of architecture, rather than from the more common extrapolations from the history of painting and philosophy, Alberto Pérez-Gómez and Louise Pelletier focus on the implications of the tool of perspective (and the hegemony of vision) for architectural representation. Their primary thesis is that tools of representation have a direct influence on the conceptual development of projects and generation of forms, and that there are alternatives to the reductive working methods of most contemporary practice.
The book examines textual evidence across a broad historical period, concentrating on the relationship between drawing and architectural space in the period from the seventh century to the twentieth century. The book discusses such issues as optical correction and the nature of architectural drawing in selected treatises, revealing the complexity and potential contradiction inherent in any linear history of representation. The authors' ultimate aim is to probe the possibilities of the constructed world--that is, architecture--as a poetic translation, rather than prosaic transcription, of its representations.
Customer Reviews:
esoteric architectural representation.......2000-04-21
Perez-Gomez wrote a very important book, the research on thearchitectural representation, and its roots, is enlightning, anddisturbing, in the sense that he pushes us to rethink our reflexes of perceptions and representation of architecture.
Book Description
The growing use of the computer in architectural and interior design has changed many work habits and procedures in the design office. The electronic revolution has opened the door to exciting options that were simply not possible before. One of these options is the almost infinite number of ways to study a proposed design in three-dimensional perspective views. Perspective Grid Sourcebook now offers architects, interior designers, and graphic designers hundreds of state-of-the-art computer-generated grids for plotting perspective and projection illustrations. This practical working tool contains several hundred small scale, exterior and interior, and nearly one hundred large scale perspective girds, including ground, eye-level, and aerial views, from a wide variety of viewing angles and distances. The volume also provides a helpful visual index that easily guides the user to the desired point of view. Created by an architect for designers as an aid in preparing perspective drawing, designs and presentation illustrations, Perspective Grid Sourcebook is the only collection of grids currently available in book form. This unique reference will enable design professionals to visualize designs quickly and to study them from a multitude of viewpoints.
Book Description
NYSR produces the Portfolio every few years, both as a showcase of the very best in contemporary architectural illustration, and as a resource for architects, developers, and designers who wish to commission renderings of their own. This edition is by far the largest we have produced to date, and features over 360 color renderings by 46 top illustrators, a foreword by Alan Ritchie of Philip Johnson/Alan Ritchie Architects, and contact information for each artist.
The illustrators featured in the NYSR Portfolio represent a broad array of styles and techniques; from traditional media such as watercolor and gouache, to digital renderings, to hybrid renderings that combine computer and hand work. As a design professional, you know that renderings are often the most public face of your project prior to construction. The right rendering can help sell your ideas to clients, prospective tenants, regulatory bodies, and communities. Within the Portfolio, it is our hope that you will find the right illustrator for your project.
Customer Reviews:
A Valuable Resource.......2007-08-02
Though most of the artists in this New York professional group have websites of their own, as well as their Society site, to see samples of their work, the book is well-printed in excellent color and easy to take to meetings, stick in a briefcase and discuss with clients, or simply review when you're tired of peering into the monitor. The book itself offers a broad survey of illustration styles, useful to others in graphic arts. Also, the rendering services that are promoted here are of interest beyond the New York region, just as New York architects do work all over the world. It's a semi-annual publication that I've followed and used since it began a dozen or more years ago.

Book Description
Incredibly elaborate Baroque architectural stage designs reproduced from 1750 copperplates. The ultimate in classical sets.
Customer Reviews:
Baroque Theater Design at Its Most Fantastic.......2002-06-28
I bought this book because the Bibiena family were such a profound influence on the spatial perceptions of Piranesi. During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, this single family, from Northern Italy, created a series of increasingly ingenious stage designs for, especially, the Hapsburgs. Much of what they created was deliberately perishable and is now lost, although the great theater in Mantua survives. This book gives the plates from Giuseppe's book on architectural designs. They are extraordinary, really the culmination of a great Baroque tradition. Particularly effective are the interior designs, which use elaborate perspective in order to suggest infinite space. The presentation of the plates in this book is not especially polished, but still pretty good.

Book Description
The culture of the kitchen – a sophisticated portrayal for planners and users.
The kitchen is regaining its role as the central living space in home life. Since the 1990s the kitchen has moved into the fashion and design spotlight, and this publication now examines and reviews its significance in an architectural, cultural, social and economical context. The authors and contributors look at important developments and revolutionary kitchen concepts of the last decades including standardised kitchens and open kitchenliving spaces; they also review design basics, current trends, the changing demands posed by patch-work families or single person households. Even culinary aspects are included. This is a book which should certainly have its place in every 21st century kitchen. Our new book series “Living concepts” presents clearly and concisely selected topics relating to aspects of the home. It is aimed at general readers as well as specialists, and edited by the ETH Wohnforum Zurich.
