Phrasebook for Australia.......2004-12-06
Lonely Planet's "Australian Phrasebook" is a great introduction to the Australian way of life and speaking for foreigners. Whether you are a tourist going on a trip to the land of Aussies, or a person studying English as used in Australia, this can be a good guide and reading supplement. Traditionally to Lonely Planet phrasebooks, this one gives you a short and easy-read introduction to the origin of Australian English. Then follow the sections dealing with present-day Australian English, Australian culture and regional languages.
Firstly, you get acquainted with phonetic and grammar features of Australian English, with British, American and Aboriginal influences, regional varieties of English in this huge country and some borrowings. Here you will also find out how to greet people, get around with Aussie English, and catch the most important colloquial phrases. You will even been able to join the Australians singing their national songs. After you've enriched your general vocabulary it is possible to get to know more about Australian culture and institutions: food and drink, party-culture, sports, urban and rural talk. Whether you'd like to find your way in coffee types or the art of argument "Australian Phrasebook" is helpful enough. It even gives you the recipes of the most popular dishes, so that next time you can throw an Australian party yourself, or just feel sure when ordering damper, pavlova and hedgehog.
The regional section gives you a thorough cultural and linguistic insight into numerous aboriginal languages. Here you will read a lot about the culture of indigenous people, as well as find rather short lists of major words you may encounter during your visit to the inner parts of the country. But, unlike the same sections in "British" or "USA" phrasebooks, the "Australian" one does not let you more or less exchange basic phrases with the Aborigines.
The strong feature of "Australian Phrasebook" is a great number of examples, comprehensive lists of words and expressions, extensive coverage of spoken language. Written in a simple language and entertaining manner, while being very informative "Australian Phrasebook" is a must-have on your next trip to the land Down Under and will certainly be your good companion, which will easily fit in a pocket.
Fair dinkum, this is a great book!.......1999-05-28
As an expatriate Aussie searching for a guide to everyday Aussie slang to show my Canadian friends, I can say that this is by far the best one I've seen - and essential if you want to order a beer in Oz! Its section on Australian Aboriginal culture and languages is also excellent and informative for non-Aboriginal Australians as well as visitors - it was put together by a group of respected Australian linguists.
Heading to Australia, have a squizz at this........1999-05-22
I'm an Aussie who was given this book as part of a going away present. I am living in America for a year. The night before I left my sister and I read to each other parts of this book. We were both in stiches, laughing at parts of our culture, colloquial expressions, and Aussie English which we normally don't give a second thought. This Phrasebook really gives a good insight to many of our 'ways' and explains what we are saying half the time. Is it necessary? Well I know if I speak in America the same way I speak at home no one can understand me! So yes, grab this book if you are heading to Australia, or are just interested in our lifestyle. The book also has a large and interesting section on Aboriginal culture and language. This is something many Australians living in the cities do not know much about. Other topics given a go are, food, wine, sports, and lots of other information about Australia and Aussies!

Excellent!.......2006-06-08
Although now appearing in the new cover, this is in fact still Lonely Planet's old Fijian Phrasebook - fortunately!
As such, it not only gives you plenty of useful phrases arranged thematically, but a very thorough introduction to Fijian grammar. This is essential to those planning to actually learn the language, something that may well be useful if you fall in love with the country and decide to stay longer than most holidaymakers.
If you are on a short holiday, you may be relieved to hear that English is widely spoken in Fiji - but trying a few local phrases always goes down well.
The best resource for quick learning.......2004-05-22
Dr. Geraghty is the world's leading linguist of Fiji's 300 indigenous regional dialects, and this book is a simple, straightforward, useful introduction to any traveler.

Great guide to the cultures, but not the lingos.......2006-06-08
This fat little book is the only cheap resource available to a number of obscure languages of the South Pacific.
It basically covers the languages of Polynesia, including those of tiny Niue and Easter Island, plus Fiji and a minor language of New Caledonia.
Unfortunately, the coverage given to each individual language is very, very limited, pretty much restricted to hints on pronunciation and a few essential wordlists like numbers, plus basic phrases like greetings.
What fills up much of the book is lenghty and insightful descriptions of the local cultures instead, with great tips on etiquette.
However I couldn't help feeling those should actually be in the relevant guidebooks, not in this phrasebook!
Still, the info included is interesting and there is nothing better, so this book is worth buying - just set your expactations right.

Talk your way through Melanesia!.......2006-06-08
This book covers the three Pidgin languages of Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu - three of the most diverse, fascinating and unspoilt countries in the South Pacific. While English is spoken by many people in all the three, the Pidgins described here are the lingua franca in each, and I found that locals were very happy to hear me speak them. Each of the three languages is introduced by a good description of its grammar (don't worry, easy and similar in all three) and pronunciation, followed by useful phrases arranged thematically.
And here comes my only complaint - I would have preferred more phrases, and perhaps short dictionary listings for all the three languages. Space for that could have been found by omitting what seems a waste here to me - descriptions of two obscure pidgin languages of Australia, which are also included in LP's Australian Phrasebook (where they logicaly belong) anyway.
Still, within the confines of its limited space, this little book is excellent.
If you are lucky enough to travel to these charming archipelagos, don't leave home without it!
Book Description
The best available guide to the pidgins and creoles of Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, north Australia and Torres Strait. These fascinating languages have developed from English, so you'll recognize plenty of words, but their grammar, sentence structure and extensive vocabularies mean that you'll find this phrasebook invaluable in understanding the language around you.
Customer Reviews:
A phrasebook plus much more to help you "tok pisin".......2000-09-15
Lonely Planet's "Pidgin Phrasebook" may be the only show in town when it comes to a traveler's language tool for Oceania. In Spring 2000 my wife and I traveled to Papua New Guinea for a highland teachers conference. This book was our companion along with Lonely Planet's Papua New Guinea travel guide (highly recommended!)
This compact book (3.5 x 5.5 x 3/8's inches) is small enough for a shirt pocket, but packed with the language basics-- grammar etc. for 5 or 6 of the island creoles, and much more. Each section contains a mini-travel guide for culture, history, business, travel. It also include a few basic maps. The only drawback is the lack of any kind of dictionary.
Pidgin is the people's language of PNG. You will actually be able to get along fine without a phrase book since English is the language of tourism, education and business. However, if you want to get off into the highlands or another local area, this is a great resource to talk to the everyday folks. As with most countries, a little effort goes a long way in good will.

Great book but a little short........1999-07-12
This book teaches you Pidgn English. This language is spoken in Papua New Guinea, and other Pacific Island countries. It is great for the traveler.Pidgn is an extremely simple language for english speakers to learn. The pronnounciation is the same and the words sound exactly the same. The only problem is that it is a bit short, otherwise if you want to learn Pidgn, buy this book.
An essential addition to traveling in PNG.......1999-06-09
Papua New Gunea has a myriad of local languages but one truly common language-pigdin English. Being able to communicate with the locals in even the most isolated of villages is both an advantage and an experience I highly recommend. The book itself is top pocket size (a huge advantage), well laid out and predictable. The only critism is that it is limited but then again so is the language. A must for travelling in PNG.

The most beautiful book I own.......2006-04-25
This title is a reproduction of a late medieval/Northern Renaissance Book of Hours or prayer book. There is just enough explaination of the artistic conventions, the revisions made as one nobleman's coat of arms replaced another, artistic conventions and medieval/early modern symbolism to let the modern reader understand the book, without going into abtruse art history discourse.
The physical book is suprisingly small--palm sized. I can look at this volume for hours to marvel not only at the calligraphy but also the details of paintings of the borders.
I am no art historian, just a book lover, and I love this little book.
A jewel.......2000-10-07
This is a lovely facimile of a book hours in the bodleian library in oxford. This book of hours was made by "the master of Mary of Burgundy" in the early 16th century. In additon to the 'carpet pages' of this manuscript, various text pages are also reproduced. Many of the illustrated pages have gold leaf on them and an gold ink is used to reproduce this effect. My only complaint with this book is that this ink has in some places obscured details of the manuscript and made pages look heavier than I think they probably do in the orginal work.
If you have read any books on illuminated manuscripts in the past, you might be suprised by the number of pages you will recognise in this book. In size the book is quite small. Quite litrely the size of your palm, and this is a reflection on the actual size of the manuscript in Oxford. The publishers have tried to reproduce the facilmile as close as possible to the orginal where they could.
If you are interested in illumanated manuscipts this book is worth having.
