Over time, in his cookbooks, and on his TV series, Jacques Pépin has taught people how to cook simple, fully flavored dishes--food that reflects his French training while embracing American informality. Jacques Pépin: Fast Food My Way takes this approach one step further by providing 100-plus recipes for a wide range of delicious, meant-to-be fast dishes. These include Stuffed Scallops on Mushroom Rice; Chicken Breasts on Mashed Cauliflower with Red Salsa; Pasta, Ham, and Vegetable Gratin; and Apple, Pecan, and Apricot Crumble. The "my way" of the title can mean the use of time-saving tools (Pépin uses pressure cookers to achieve easy stews like his beef short-rib, mushroom, and potato dish) and convenience foods (canned black bean soup or sweet potatoes for new soup versions). Generally, though, the Pépin approach emphasizes the use of foods that are themselves quickly cooked, like chicken breasts or beef fillet and that can be made flavorful with equally fast-to-fix accompaniments, like his salsa mayonnaise or his tomato-olive sauce.
Fast is, of course, a relative term, and readers will find more than a few dishes in the book that may require more time or attention than they're willing to spend on a daily basis. But overall, the book offers enough easily made recipes, and super-time-saving formulas, like Instant Vegetable Soup, to make it a true cooking resource. --Arthur Boehm
Book Description
In Jacques Ppin Fast Food My Way, the man who taught millions of Americans how to cook shares the techniques he honed in the most famous kitchens of the world to show you how to create simple, special meals in minutes. In this companion volume to his new series on public television, Jacques shows you how to create great-tasting dishes ranging from stunning salads such as Tomato and Mozzarella Fans to Suprme of Chicken with Balsamic Vinegar and Shallot Sauce to his breathtaking Almond Cake with Berries, all special enough for company, yet easy enough for those weekday evenings when you have no time. Fast food Jacques's way involves no compromises in taste but saves you hours in the kitchen. His Instant Beef Tenderloin Stew, for instance, not only is far faster to make than traditional versions, but tastes brighter and fresher. With concise, clear directions, Jacques shares the secrets of his kitchen. He teaches you how to season a salmon fillet perfectly and cook it in a low oven, right on the serving platter. You'll learn how to make a satisfying homemade vegetable soup in seconds, a baked potato in half the usual time, and a succulent roast that takes minutes, not hours, to prepare. He also shows you how to create elegant meals from convenience foods: a bean dip that will keep guests coming back for more, silky soups, and caramelized peaches made from canned peaches. With Jacques Ppin Fast Food My Way at your side, the best food is always the simplest.

Makes You Look Fabulous.......2007-08-18
I am very far from being a great cook. I have, however, been able to impress so many guests in my home with these recipes which practically make themselves. All this due to the genius of M. Pepin. Highest possible recommendation. And it's fun, too!
Fast and Wonderful Food.......2007-05-12
Jacques Pepin uses cooking and food to love people, and it shows in this wonderful and usable book. The recipes consistently reflect simple but important techniques, such as grating the onions rather than chopping them in the "Fridge Soup," or "Instant Vegetable Soup." You can't get much simpler than "Grapefruit Gratinee," yet the flavors meld delightfully.
This book goes on the shelf beside my favorite 3-4 time-tested, proven, yet fun cookbooks. I appreciate Jacque Pepin's contributions to cooking, and so do my family!
Making delicious, home cooked meals couldn't be simpler........2007-05-07
This cookbook may not be the all encompassing tome that your grandmother may have used for her home cooking, but it provides the reader with various simple to make recipes nonetheless. The recipes found in this book require few steps from start to finish and use ingredients that you can find at your local market. You could plan a multiple course meal, from appetizer to dessert, and impress your friends and family with minimal effort. The underlying philosophy in this book is that fast food doesn't have to be empty calorie junk food.
Worked better (for me) in conjunction with the (5 star) PBS DVD series.......2007-02-26
I picked up this book because a friend recommended it, and because I knew of Pepin as a contemporary of Julia Child, so I figured I couldn't go too far wrong. However (as the editorial review so discerningly mentions) some of the recipe titles and ingredient lists didn't seem promising to a first year cook who was stuck in "reheat takeout/deli food in microwave" mode until recently. and the food photography didn't help in most cases, either - eveyrhing seemed to be taken at an odd angle with a fish-eye lens. So I put FFMW up on a shelf in the back room, figuring that I might someday find it more in line with what I was looking for in a cookbook.
Then I happened on a PBS cable channel rebroadcasting a FFMW episode late one and I tuned in to see Pepin in action. Well, it was a revelation. Pepin was a true class act, and just seeing him in action was a culinary education. He was interesting, informative, modest and witty, and he put a 4 course dinner effortlessly and without fuss. Plus, the dishes he prepared looked fantastic. I watched another episode the next week, and the same thing happened again.
So I went back to my bookshelf, pulled FFMW down, gave it a serious look, and realized (smack palm to forehead) that once I had actually seen Pepin cook (as most purchasers of the book would have), then every thing in it made sense and was quite useful and compelling. The value had always been there. But as a beginning cook (and an American unfamiliar with this style of cooking) I had needed Pepin's "voice" to make it work for me. That's probably my failing, not Pepin's or his editorial staff, but I have to review my experience with the book, not what *should* have been if I were more seasoned in the kitchen.
Since then I have made several dishes from the book (and twice put together an entire menu on my weekend) and I can attest that this is a great culinary resource for people who want to eat well - but who can't deal with MTV style celebrity chefs like Rachel and Giada. I've ordered the two DVDs and am looking forward to seeing more of Mr. Pepin in action.
good book.......2007-01-09
my wife likes this book very much, the title pretty much covers the contents: quick and nice-tasting recipes.

worth every penny!.......2007-03-12
French the Easy Way is, in my opinion, a definate buy if you know nothing about French and are just starting out, or if you took it in school, totally forgot it (like me) and want to re-learn it. Basically, it's a work book and grammar book all in one.
I am so glad I bought it. In addition to providing a pretty solid foundation for further study, this book is a breath of fresh air. Many language books are confusing, illogical, ill-organized and just give you a bunch of seemingly meaningless phrases to memorize! The well-written lessons get to the point quickly without confusing you with a bunch of mumbo-jumbo convoluted phrasing. The lesson chapters themselves are organized one after the other in a logical sequence. The excercises, although kind of too simple at times, are overall quite effective and fun to do. Also for a beginning language book, the (often mind-numbingly dumb) reading material is actually pretty funny.
This book does not cover prononciation or French culture; it's just a bare bones BASIC grammar book with basic vocabulary. However, as simple as it is, it still packs a punch.
If you wind up buying this book, I suggest studying the lessons first, vocabulary list next, then onto the story at the beginning of each chapter. Rinse, lather, repeat.
Helpful Grammar Book.......2006-11-25
I just recently bought this book and I really like how it explains the grammar in an easy and clear way. Grammar is something I dread. Things that I had a lot of trouble understanding in other books, were made clear quickly and easily in this book.
Good Grammar Book.......2006-11-19
I took a basic French conversation class and used this book as a supplement to learn how to conjugate verbs, improve my vocabulary, etc. The exercises are easy and you can do them on your own.
Some of the weaknesses are that (1.) it doesn't have CDs (2.) the vocabulary is targeted towards middle- to high-school kids and (3.) the exercises are very basic and cover mostly present tense.
Good, But With One Big Flaw.......2006-02-07
This is a nice book for anyone looking to learn the basics of the French language. It's essentially what you might learn were you to take French 1 in high school or an introductory college level course. The exercises are fun and engaging but there is still one flaw that is excruciatingly annoying if you are attempting to use this as a self-instruction medium -- the pronunciation guide is essentially non existent. Half a page for covering the complexity of French pronunciation? It's ridiculous that an author would create such a fine work, include so many helpful exercises and prompts, claiming that the purpose of the book is for "communication purposes," and then give essentially no detail-oriented instruction on the pronunciation of the language. More over, the pitiful little pronunciation guide is complicated to comprehend and in some cases, either blatantly unconcerned with certain special cases of French pronunciation or just flat out wrong. Perhaps I'm too much of a conspiracy theorist, but one paragraph inparticular from the introduction caught my attention. It reads, "The guide to pronunciation of French sounds...is merely a guide. If you want to improve your fluency and pronunciation of French, I would recommend "Pronounce it Perfectly in French," also issued by Barron's Education Series, Inc." Well, isn't that convenient.
All-in-all, it's a book ample in practice exercises, grammar points, and vocabulary, but Dr. Kendris' insistence that he wrote this as a communication guide, not for the purposes of merely comprehending writings, and the subsequent lack of pronunciation points is something that I simply cannot move past. So, if you know nothing of French or haven't already purchased a copy of the Barron's French pronunciation guide, be aware of this book's one serious flaw.
Great book for beginners.......2005-08-24
This book is great for beginners. It has a lot of interesting dialogue with pictures and exercises. However, if you want more comprensive grammar explanations, you might want to purchase another more grammar-orientated book to go along with this one!

Customer Reviews:
french grammer.......2007-10-01
very useful book, simple explanations using a lot of illustrations, suitable also for beginners and also for intermidiate
I'd give it 10 stars if I could!.......2007-03-10
I'm completely amazed by how good this book is. As a writer of technical textbooks, I know how hard it is to get across such material concisely, completely and clearly. This book blows me away.
Most grammar books simply contain descriptions of correct language. This one goes the extra step and explains WHY things are as they are. For just one example: I had been struggling for ages with "ce que" versus "que". I could never seem to figure out why "ce" was sometimes necessary. One read through the single page in this book that deals with the issue and I was sorted out forever!
The book is full of handy tips for remembering things (to be frank, sometimes they do feel a bit contrived, but you're not forced to use all of them, after all) and I just love the nearly 10 pages dealing with negative sentence structures using the concept of a burger with various ingredients! It's so well done that the complexity of dealing with the placements of pronouns and the various negative adverbs becomes totally clear and easy to remember.
A book which explains concepts so clearly might be expected to only deal with beginner concepts, but no...it devotes 43 pages to the conditional and subjunctive moods, again, very clearly explained.
One more bit of praise: the practice exercises come with answers! How rare is that?
An Excellent French Grammer Text, not only for college students.......2006-10-01
This is a surprisingly good book, at a very cheap price. I'm more than twice as old as your typical college student and although I limped through a year of French 30 years ago in college, I'd forgotten virtually all of it until I embarked on a program of study in a language school in France with additional study at home. During the 2 years I've been working on this little project, I've bought just about every French grammer and many of the other French language books available on Amazon. To be honest, most were either useless or more trouble than they were worth. "The Ultimate French Review and Practice" by Stillman and Gordon is but one example of a book I've bought and found of very limited value.
What is great about THIS book is that it is written by a native Frenchwoman who was educated in France but who has lived a long time in the USA where she has taught French language courses to English speakers (e.g. "Anglophones.") As a result, she is personally very familiar with the problems that Anglophones have learning French, both from the experience of working with English speaking students and from her own experience of being a Francophone trying to learn English. The perspective this gives is oh, so much more valuable than when you have native English speakers trying to teach French.
The other book to which I referred above is full of examples of non-idiomatic speach, sentences and word constructions that while technically (maybe) correct, are often non-idiomatic. When I tried to work with that book with a young Frenchman who has been helping me practice French at home, he kept saying, "but that isn't how WE would say it."
On the other hand, when I read the Chauderlot book, I find many explanations of things that I never was able to grasp when it was attempted to teach them to me solely in French. Sometimes it is just easier to have complicated sentence structures, the use of prepositions, and other specific grammatical points explained to you in your own language so that you can actually understand them rather than using them by rote. When you use something by rote you will probably get by with it, but then later when you are faced with a variation of the construction you did not really understand, it is anyone's guess if you will comprehend it.
I have not finished this book but the portions that I have read, dealing with nouns, prepositions, conjunctions, and pronouns are very clear and comprehensible. I am taking this book with me to France to use during my upcoming monthlong trip during which I'll spend 3 weeks back in the language school. I am going to give it as a gift to the library of the school when I leave in the hopes it will help other Anglophone students.
Of course, I have ordered a second copy so I'll have one back at home when I return from the trip!
An excellent book.......2006-04-04
I am a college professor and have been using this book for three quarters now - it's excellent.
I have no idea what the gentleman beow is referring to as full of errors... Go ahead and email them to me scolbert56 @ yahoo.com but it sounds like he doesn't have a firm grasp of the language. Possibly he's thinking of French Canadian / Arcadian? Get a clue. Do you really think that Barron's would have allowed three or four proofreaders to miss any major mistakes?
Anyway, as I was saying, we've been using the book in class and even the students whose first choice wasn't French are entertained and immersed into learning the language.
Steven
full of errors.......2005-12-18
The book covers a lot of material and will undoubtedly be useful to somebody who has already learned the material before (but might have forgotten it). Unfortunately, the book has many many errors, sometimes in crucial places, and many of the summarizing charts are poorly conceived and designed. I suppose it does make one think carefully in order to untangle the correct information from what is written.

Breakthrough French.......2003-05-06
I was dissapointed with this program. First of all because the program is listed online as being available in CD format (which it is NOT). Secondly, there is an echo after everything that is said in the cassettes.
Don't Leave Home Without It.......2001-09-22
Like most people planning their very first trip to Paris, I spent the days leading up to my departure hoping to have a wonderful time, and praying that I'd be able to communicate with Parisians when I got there. Too busy before leaving to get much farther than the second chapter of this book, I was a bit worried that I hadn't studied enough French to do me any good. Boy, was I wrong!
Using just the material I learned in the first two chapters of this book and cassette course I was able to communicate well enough in French to get most of the people I met in the mood to try their limited English with me. Happiness and goodwill abounded. They seemed appreciative that I was at least *trying* to speak their language, and most could barely hide their amusement at my earnest American attempt. Even the people who didn't speak any English at all could in most cases understand me.
The taped lessons are easy to follow and pleasant to listen to thanks mostly to the engaging voice of our French speaking Englishman host "Phillipe". The written segments at the end of each section are fun to complete and will give you a real sense of accomplishment at how much you've learned. The books layout and graphics make it an easy read with pleasing type, and numerous color photos and illustrations.
Ahhh, if only my high school French class had been more like this...
Best I've Found.......2000-06-07
I am an absolute beginner in studying French, but I must say this book has been the most helpful. Unlike other books/tapes that give too much too soon or are too 'touristy', the exercises move just fast enough and the situations and exercises are as interesting as they probably can be considering you're learnign to say hello my name is molly. I'll buy Breakthrough French 2 as soon as it comes out!
Worthless.......1999-02-08
I've used several different tape-driven language programs before, but never one worse than this. The audio track sounds like it was recorded underwater, but even Jacques Cousteau couldn't understand this. Avoid like the plague.

Fans watching the 2004 baseball playoffs were often treated to shots of Stephen King sitting in the stands, notebook in hand. Given the bizarre events on the field, from the Red Sox's unprecedented comeback against their most hated rivals to their ace pitcher's bleeding, stitched-together ankle--not to mention the Sox's first championship in 86 years--you could be forgiven for thinking King was writing the script as he went along, passing new plot twists down to the dugouts between innings.
What he was writing, though, along with his friend and fellow novelist Stewart O'Nan, was Faithful, a diary of the 2004 Red Sox season. Faithful is written not from inside the clubhouse or the press room, but from the outside, from the stands and the sofa in front of the TV, by two fans who, like the rest of New England, have lived and died (mostly died) with the Sox for decades. From opposite ends of Red Sox Nation, King in Maine and O'Nan at the border of Yankees country in Connecticut, they would meet in the middle at Fenway Park or trade emails from home about the games they'd both stayed up past midnight to watch. King (or, rather, "Steve") is emotional, O'Nan (or "Stew") is obsessively analytical. Steve, as the most famous Sox fan who didn't star in Gigli, is a folk hero of sorts, trading high fives with doormen and enjoying box seats better than John Kerry's, while Stew is an anonymous nomad, roving all over the park. (Although he's such a shameless ballhound that he gains some minor celebrity as "Netman" when he brings a giant fishing net to hawk batting-practice flies from the top of the Green Monster.)
You won't find any of the Roger Angell-style lyricism here that baseball, and the Sox in particular, seem to bring out in people. (King wouldn't stand for it.) Instead, this is the voice of sports talk radio: two fans by turns hopeful, distraught, and elated, who assess every inside pitch and every waiver move as a personal affront or vindication. Full of daily play-by-play and a season's rises and falls, Faithful isn't self-reflective or flat-out funny enough to become a sports classic like Fever Pitch, Ball Four, or A Fan's Notes, but like everything else associated with the Red Sox 2004 season, from the signing of Curt Schilling to Dave Roberts's outstretched fingers, it carries the golden glow of destiny. And, of course, it's got a heck of an ending. --Tom Nissley
Book Description
Early in 2004, two writers and Red Sox fans, Stewart O'Nan and Stephen King, decided to chronicle the upcoming season, one of the most hotly anticipated in baseball history. They would sit together at Fenway. They would exchange emails. They would write about the games. And, as it happened, they would witness the greatest comeback ever in sports, and the first Red Sox championship in eighty-six years. What began as a Sox-filled summer like any other is now a fan's notes for the ages.

A fan's notes for the ages, Faithful grew from an email exchange last summer. Filled with the heady mix of exhilaration and frustration familiar to all Boston Red Sox fans, Stewart O'Nan fired off a note to fellow Sox fan, Stephen King, who responded with his thoughts on Pedro, Nomar, Manny, Mueller, and Theo. From the supposed Curse of the Bambino to f###in' Bucky Dent to the recent off-season battle for Alex Rodriguez, Sox fans have seen it all since 1918...except for that elusive World Championship. Baseball history has transformed these fans into a "nation" -- not to mention the most dedicated, knowledgeable fanbase on the planet. Stewart O'Nan and Stephen King, proud members of Red Sox Nation, will chronicle the 2004 baseball season from spring training to the last game of the season -- the important plays, the controversial managerial decisions, the significant front office moves, and the spectacular finish (whether heartbreaking or joyous). Attending games together, keeping a running diary of observations and arguments, and occasionally evoking great or tragic events in Red Sox history. King and O'Nan will cheer on their beloved team with the eternal hope that this just might be the year. If you don't have season ticket box seats right behind the firstbase dugout, you can't beat Faithful.
Customer Reviews:
The title says it all: take it for what it is.......2007-08-06
Anyone who thinks that this book should be entertaining to anyone but a Red Sox fan needs to re-read the title. This book was never advertised as anything more than two fanatics game by game reactions to and experiences with each Red Sox game of the 2004 season. For a Red Sox fan, it was a great read, especially knowing how the whole thing ends. For anyone else other than those who are just true sports fans, I can clearly see how it would be a huge bore just as a book entitled "Astrophysics: Two Diehard Scientists Chronicle the History of the Science" would bore the hell out of me. Frankly, I enjoyed the season itself and then enjoyed reliving it through the eyes of O'Nan and Uncle Stephie. It's a shame that more authors haven't picked up on this notion for other sports teams looking at promising seasons.
Look elsewhere.......2007-08-02
I just finished reading this book. My brother wanted to read it afterwards, but I told him not to waste his time. We are both huge Red Sox fans and even as such, I could barely stand the book. From the get-go it is obvious this book is O'Nan's baby and King is just adding his thoughts from time to time (about 30%) so that his name will be on the cover and they will sell more copies. Neither of the fans are "diehard" as they claim to be, missing many games and rehashing what was said on Sportscenter. O'Nan acts like a child and is hard to read - not to mention his other "favorite" team is the Pirates. We don't care. The emails sent between one-another did not sound anything like emails real people would send - they were quite clearly written just for the sake of writing something to take up space. In addition, the authors alleged inability to sleep after a meaningless Red Sox loss or nightmares about the team seemed a bit fake. I only finished it because I had started it but I picked it up each day with a bit of dread. I will never read anything with O'Nan's name on it, and I'm glad I didn't pay a cent for this book.
Great Timing but Not Great Writing.......2007-04-12
"Faithful" is a season-long diary by noted author Steven King and less well-known novelist Stewart O'Nan, both lifelong Boston Red Sox fans. Their editor's choice of season is fortunate--2004, when the Sox won their first World Series championship in 86 years. Both authors include diary entries, which are passioniate and generally entertaining. As a baseball fan, I also appreciated the stories (particularly O'Nan's) about getting to the ballpark and watching the games in person. The book also features some e-mail or instant message traffic between the two--though this is both less revealing and entertaining--mostly dumb. There's no drama as to how the "story" will come out, but there is some uncertainty as to how the authors' mental health will be both when the Yankees take a 3-games-to-none lead in the American League Championship Series and when the Red Sox complete an unprecedented four game comeback to reach the World Series. I'm sure Red Sox "faithful" will love this book; baseball fans like myself will like it; and non-baseball fans will and should read something else.
Faithful.......2007-01-13
The book Faithful written by Stephen King and Stewart O'nan is definitely a five star book. Actually that rating would be different if you were a Yankee fan. If you are a Red Sox fan then you should like it. This book describes every game the Red Sox played in the 2004 season. This book doesn't just show the stats of the games, the games are written from a person's point of view. I liked this book because I am a Red Sox fan and I liked how it was written.
This book shows perseverance. It shows this because when the Red Sox were down 3-0 to the Yankees in the playoffs. The Red Sox didn't give up. They tried their hardest and came back to win 4-3. This is said to be one of baseballs biggest comebacks. Then after the playoffs they went on to play in the World Series. This perseverance is also an example of what Atticus Finch used in To Kill A Mockingbird when he had to defend Tom Robinson. He did not want to do this but it was his job and he was going to get through it. Atticus didn't give up nor did the Red Sox. Like I said I give this book five stars and I would recommend it to Red Sox fans or anyone else. This is a great book!!!!
If you don't like baseball stop now.......2007-01-12
Listen to two die hard fans in what turned out to be a magical season. I stopped being a big time Red Sox fan around 25 years ago when my significant other hogged the TV during baseball games. I never having heard or understood what "Read Sox Nation" meant or why Sweet Caroline had turned into a team theme.
I felt the "thrill of victory, and the agony of defeat" in the voices of the two men who wrote the book. Stephen King is especially interesting as he gets more and more frustrated as the season went on.
If you have ever rooted for the "impossible" to happen, this is a great listen.

A comienzos de 2004, dos escritores y fanaticos de los Medias Rojas, Stewart O'Nan y Stephen King, decidieron hacer una cronica personal de la nueva temporada, una de las mas fervientemente esperadas en la historia del beisbol.
