Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, thorough, a must-have, though some English terms are hard to understand.......2007-06-04

I have been learning Hungarian for about 2 months now, and I have just read this book cover-to-cover. I wish I had read it 1 month ago.

It is an excellent book, designed as a reference rather than an ground-up book. Each section is self-contained and does not require previous section to have been read previously (so the reader could, for example, jump straight to chapter 10 or 20 for quick reference).

There are lots of examples, all of which have English translations (something not all books have). My only complaint about the examples is that I wish there were a few more, especially in whole sentences. Many of the examples are sentence fragments, which does not always give as must help as an full sentence.

I agree with the other reviewer that it would have been helpful to cover the various declined endings in more detail. Some are covered on depth, but others are simply listed with a very brief one-word explanation of the case.

There are several sections on how verbs and nouns form their stems from the base form - the way that some drop a vowel, add a "d", or how some letters change.
It is also careful to describe rules and to then list common exceptions to the rules. This is priceless.

As has already been mentioned, there are lots of linguistic terms that I did not know, even in English. On one hand, it would be helpful to have a brief explanation of some of these terms; on the other it's not the place of a Hungarian book to each an Englishman terms in English.

I thoroughly recommend this book for the beginner as well as for those who've been studying for a few months.

3 out of 5 stars good.......2006-06-09

This book is good if you have studied hunagarian fo months. There are not to many examles and if you know and love grammer and thinks it is easy than you will understand it. But if you do not understand grammer you will be sitting with a dictionary the whole time and looking up what an indefinate verb and things like tha are. Over all it is good you just have to spend alot of time wih it to understand it

2 out of 5 stars Best for Advanced Students.......2005-08-22

This is clearly advanced material and not for the faint of heart. It's also pretty dry - reminds me of old English grammar books that were quite rote and abstract. Not particularly helpful for beginning Hungarian students.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential for the serious Hungarian student.......2005-03-15

Torkenczy's the Man. I don't see how anybody could master Hungarian without this book. Torkenczy has simplified Hungarian grammar to its core essentials, and provided lots of lists of verb conjugation and the like that are invaluable for the serious student.

But note that this should be used as a reference book and not as a textbook to learn Hungarian! My recommendation is to get this book only after about 8-12 months of studying Hungarian, depending on how serious of a student you are. Then read it cover-to-cover without stopping or re-reading. There will be much you won't understand, but don't worry about that now; just read it in its entirety to get an overview of all the forms and structures. Parallel to your normal studies, re-read it at least every 6-8 months, this time more in-depth, over and over until you feel confident that you know it all. It'll work!

The only major flaw with this book is that its a little TOO concise. There are some places where a bit more explanation would have served the book better. There are also a few grammar points not covered, unfortunately, such as the "-e" (whether or not) ending. The only other negative comment I would have is that there are too many specialized linguistic terms for the non-linguist learner.

But it gets 5 stars for its overall usefulness and indispensibility.

5 out of 5 stars an excellent REFERENCE book.......2005-03-05

As someone who is taking formal Hungarian lessons, I've found Hungarian Verbs and Essentials of Grammar very useful. While it gives thorough coverage of Hungarian verbs and grammar, it should be used as a supplement to a language course. This excellent refernce books clearly describes the grammatical rules and notes the numerous exceptions. As a reference book Hungarian Essentials is well organized. This book has also been helpful in building my vocabulary.

I would highly recommend as a complement to this book Practical Hungarian Grammar. It was written by the same author and published five years later in 2002

    Book Description

In these three plays, García Lorca's acknowledged masterpieces, he searched for a contemporary mode of tragedy and reminded his audience that dramatic poetry-or poetic drama-depends less on formal convention that on an elemental, radical outlook on human life. His images are beautiful and exact, but until now no translator had ever been able to make his characters speak unaffectedly on the American stage. Michael Dewell of the National Repertory Theatre and Carmen Zapata of the Bilingual Foundation of the Arts have created these versions expressly for the stage. The result, both performable and readable, has been thoroughly revised for this edition, which is introduced by Christopher Maurer, general editor of the Complete Poetical Works of García Lorca.

5 out of 5 stars Verde Que Te Quiero Verde.......2003-11-29

Here is one of Federico Garcia-Lorca's most famous poems, in Spanish. It will give you a taste of what it is like to read him in English or Spanish:

    Verde que te quiero verde*
    por F. García Lorca * Friday October 24, 2003 at 09:46 PM

    Romance sonámbulo*

    Verde que te quiero verde.
    Verde viento. Verdes ramas.
    El barco sobre la mar
y el caballo en la montaña.
Con la sombra en la cintura
    ella sueña en su baranda,
    verde carne, pelo verde,
    con ojos de fría plata.
    Verde que te quiero verde.
    Bajo la luna gitana,
    las cosas le están mirando
    y ella no puede mirarlas.
    *
    Verde que te quiero verde.
    Grandes estrellas de escarcha,
vienen con el pez de sombra
que abre el camino del alba.
    La higuera frota su viento
con la lija de sus ramas,
    y el monte, gato garduño,
    eriza sus pitas agrias.
¿Pero quién vendrá? ¿Y por dónde...?
    Ella sigue en su baranda,
    verde carne, pelo verde,
    soñando en la mar amarga.
    *
    Compadre, quiero cambiar
    mi caballo por su casa,
    mi montura por su espejo,
    mi cuchillo por su manta.
    Compadre, vengo sangrando,
    desde los montes de Cabra.
    Si yo pudiera, mocito,
    ese trato se cerraba.
Pero yo ya no soy yo,
ni mi casa es ya mi casa.
    Compadre, quiero morir
    decentemente en mi cama.
    De acero, si puede ser,
    con las sábanas de holanda.
¿No ves la herida que tengo
desde el pecho a la garganta?
    Trescientas rosas morenas
    lleva tu pechera blanca.
    Tu sangre rezuma y huele
    alrededor de tu faja.
Pero yo ya no soy yo,
ni mi casa es ya mi casa.
    Dejadme subir al menos
    hasta las altas barandas,
    dejadme subir, dejadme,
    hasta las verdes barandas.
    Barandales de la luna
    por donde retumba el agua.
    *
    Ya suben los dos compadres
    hacia las altas barandas.
    Dejando un rastro de sangre.
    Dejando un rastro de lágrimas.
    Temblaban en los tejados
    farolillos de hojalata.
    Mil panderos de cristal,
    herían la madrugada.
    *
    Verde que te quiero verde,
    verde viento, verdes ramas.
    Los dos compadres subieron.
    El largo viento, dejaba
en la boca un raro gusto
de hiel, de menta y de albahaca.
    ¡Compadre! ¿Dónde está, dime?
    ¿Dónde está mi niña amarga?
    ¡Cuántas veces te esperó!
    ¡Cuántas veces te esperara,
    cara fresca, negro pelo,
    en esta verde baranda!
    *
    Sobre el rostro del aljibe
    se mecía la gitana.
    Verde carne, pelo verde,
    con ojos de fría plata.
    Un carámbano de luna
    la sostiene sobre el agua.
    La noche su puso íntima

    como una pequeña plaza.
    Guardias civiles borrachos,
    en la puerta golpeaban.
    Verde que te quiero verde.
    Verde viento. Verdes ramas.
    El barco sobre la mar.
Y el caballo en la montaña

5 out of 5 stars Lyrical, Passionate, Elemental.......2003-10-23

I saw BLOOD WEDDING and THE HOUSE OF BERNARDA ALBA on television during the '50s or '60s. I loved them so much, I got the books out of the library read and re-read them during high school.

Garcia Lorca is a master of language and poetry. His plays and poems are romantic, lyrical, and passionate.

THE HOUSE OF BERNARDA ALBA, BLOOD WEDDING, AND YERMA center on the urgent sexuality of women and the rage and pain that come when that sexuality is denied or thwarted. Lorca's plays are not pornographic or sexually explicit--rather they deal with drives, yearnings, impulses that inevitably flower, and how different characters in the play are affected by social pressures that allow--or restrain--her from expressing these ancient needs.

One reviewer included a quote in his review, and so will I--this poem will perhaps give the reader a sense of his style:

    The Gypsy and the Wind

    Playing her parchment moon
    Precosia comes
along a watery path of laurels and crystal lights.
    The starless silence, fleeing
    from her rhythmic tambourine,
falls where the sea whips and sings,
his night filled with silvery swarms.
    High atop the mountain peaks
    the sentinels are weeping;
they guard the tall white towers
    of the English consulate.
    And gypsies of the water
    for their pleasure erect
    little castles of conch shells
    and arbors of greening pine.

    Playing her parchment moon
    Precosia comes.
The wind sees her and rises,
    the wind that never slumbers.
    Naked Saint Christopher swells,
watching the girl as he plays
    with tongues of celestial bells
    on an invisible bagpipe.

Gypsy, let me lift your skirt
and have a look at you.
    Open in my ancient fingers
the blue rose of your womb.

    Precosia throws the tambourine
    and runs away in terror.
But the virile wind pursues her
with his breathing and burning sword.

    The sea darkens and roars,
while the olive trees turn pale.
    The flutes of darkness sound,
and a muted gong of the snow.

    Precosia, run, Precosia!
Or the green wind will catch you!
    Precosia, run, Precosia!
And look how fast he comes!
    A satyr of low-born stars
with their long and glistening tongues.

    Precosia, filled with fear,
now makes her way to that house
    beyond the tall green pines
    where the English consul lives.

    Alarmed by the anguished cries,
    three riflemen come running,
    their black capes tightly drawn,
and berets down over their brow.

    The Englishman gives the gypsy
    a glass of tepid milk
and a shot of Holland gin
    which Precosia does not drink.

And while she tells them, weeping,
    of her strange adventure,
    the wind furiously gnashes
    against the slate roof tiles.

Now imagine these words in Spanish!

5 out of 5 stars Spain not Peru.......2001-08-03

The trilogy by FGL, Yerma, Blood Wedding and The House of Bernarda Alba is set in Spain not Peru. They are an excellent portrayal of life in rural Spain during those times. A must read for anyone, but especially those who are studying Spanish literature. Allthough most widely known as a poet, FGL displays his talent for drama with these plays.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply brilliant.......2000-03-10

Lorca uses simple mathematical expressions to convey emotions. A colour, for example white, combined with an object, for example a baby in the opening sequence of Yerma, will add up to a symbolic meaning where either two factors can be used somewhere else. Basically, anything white is a dream of happiness which is destroyed by an event. This very basic set of symbols and the application of "equations" makes Lorca one of the most powerful and accessible writers i've come accross. Oh and the stories are good too (!)

    Book Description

Lorca's Blood Wedding is a classic of twentieth-century theatre. The story is based on a newspaper fragment which told of a family vendetta and a bride who ran away with the son of the enemy family. Lorca uses it to investigate the subjects which fascinated him: desire, repression, ritual, and the constraints and commitments of the rural Spanish community in which the play is rooted. Ted Hughes's version stays close in spirit and letter to the original Spanish. With marvellous directness, he fuses Lorca's vision to his own, and the result is a powerful poetic text which captures all the violence and pathos of the play for an English-speaking audience.

    Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars Blood Wedding.......2000-06-12

This is going to short, but I found the play below standards set by the author. There is weak imagery combined by poor, ineffective dialogue, yet there are nice character settings. There is a nice story line combining fire and passion in Leonardo's case with love for the bride, yet it is let down by the poor use of language. It is good for reading before bed, but other than that, I'd say "NO", like the "Just Say NO" drug ads.

5 out of 5 stars Sex, Violence, and Horses.......1999-06-07

Lorca is often called the 20th century's greatest Spanish dramatist, and his skill with poetry in images of knives, sex, love, blood, horses and the moon illuminates this English translation. While my knowledge of Spanish is limited, the conflict of a Bride longing for but yet resisting another man who has already fathered a child by his Wife is poignantly portrayed in this version. The other man (Leonardo) rides a horse nearly to death, and rides like mad to see his about-to-be-married love beyond the peering eyes of others. His driven horse stands "down there stretched out, with his eyeballs bulging, heaving as if he'd just come back from the end of the world." The conflicts of love and the Bridegroom's Mother, who has lost her husband and her other son to violence, and the building passion, hate, love and the continual imagery of the wild horse--representing Leonardo himself?--build in poetic images and language that begins in the real and subtly transforms to surrealistic images of the moon who exposes the hidden shadows, then returns to the poetically real. In some aspects, the images of horse and rider hint at the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, but a knowledge of them is unnecessary to experience the passion of this play written by a friend of the then young Salvador Dali. The play is worth reading for its visual imagery alone, but it also encompasses a powerful story of passion, betrayal, hate, violence and love.

5 out of 5 stars Chose to perform.......1998-05-15

This will be a very brief review, but basically we have chosen this book to perform for or theatre studies cat. It is a really good play, and I recomend it to anyone who likes reading plays.

        Book Description

Spain's most celebrated dramatist Federico García Lorca (1898-1936) was murdered by Nationalist sympathizers shortly after the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. His plays are renowned for their evocation of the profound and primitive passions of Spanish peasant life, displaying an innovative mixture of modern dramatic technique with Spanish popular tradition. This volume contains three of his greatest plays and Lorca's intense, lyrical dialogue is perfectly captured in translations of Blood Wedding and Doña Rosita the Spinster by Gwynne Edwards and Yerma by Peter Luke.

5 out of 5 stars Lorca is misunderstood by small minds.......2000-03-02

I find it quite amazing that readers find themselves capable of disregarding a playwright's work simply because they have read what could well be a bad edition! This edition of Lorca's Yerma and Blood Wedding is definitely not among the best I have read; others do more justice to the original works. Obviously, much of the content and passion is lost upon translation. I have had the privilege of reading most of Lorca's work in Spanish and must say that he is indeed one of the most influential and talented playwrights (and poets) of our time. Lorca's work is infused with the beauty and passion of the Spanish people and culture and it is quite difficult for us considerably less emotional Americans to understand, let alone feel the intensity of such power; again, this has a lot to do with reading it in English.

5 out of 5 stars He captures human nature and sexuality very passionately!.......1999-10-22

I read the review of comyking@home.net and I think that you need to develop literary skills(An education perhaps?!). Maybe then you will undrstand what literature is about. Yerma and La casa de Bernada Alba are two of the most fascinating books I have ever read. They depict the life and frustrations faced by females in an era when chastity, "social stauts and appearance" influenced a woman's life. I think these books are extremely interesting and insightful. One must have an exceptional literary background to appreciate this type of literature.

1 out of 5 stars I did not like it at all........1999-06-06

The book was trash. It had no plot, no story, and no action. I couldn't wait to put it down it was so bad, but I had jury duty and there was nothing else to do. I wish I had brought a different book. PLEASE DO NOT GET CAUGHT IN THE SAME SITUATION!!! THIS BOOK IS HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars A great play in which many important themes are presented.......1999-02-07

This is one of Lorca's most interesting plays, in which a dominant and strict mother controls the lives of her daughters. Many themes are expressed in this play: social pressure, love, dominance, etc.

            Book Description

Not to be outdone by the likes of Carl Jung, this author delves into the deep unconscious -- and gets to the roots of a powerful set of symbols that guide the creative output of one of the giants of the Spanish language world. (His writing is prettyy great stuff in translation too!)
