Missing the Pronunciation of Hungarian words.......2006-03-31

Because the Hungariqan alphabet and especially the pronunciation is different from English, it it a must to have next to each Hungarian word or phrase, its pronunciation - and this book it missing it!
Yes, they have pronunciation of letters in separate page, but you have to look back each time you want to learn how to prononuce a word.
If you're a beginner, stay away from this book.

Not Very Detailed.......2005-10-06

I bought this book to help me translate messages and Hungarian ancestral documents for my genealogical research. This book is has very limited vocabulary. I am currently searching for a better more comprehensive Hungarian/English dictionary. Spend more money and buy a better book.

It helps when off the beaten (Anglophone) track.......2005-05-02

All I can say is that when in provincial Hungary, an English-speaker is not necessarily found. This portable phrasebook and simple dictionary serves the purpose, and using it, I was able to communicate in a limited fashion, along with gestures and smiles. The price and size are right, and it'll help you navigate in a part of Europe that still may expect German or even Russian speakers more often than intrepid and often mono-lingual Anglophones.

I had an excellent trip to Budapest & Debrecen assisted by using this book. I was able to order food, beer, and travel with ease.

Handy, Compact Guidebook for Multiple Languages........2007-02-03

This guidebook is a handy, compact reference for simple survival and simple courtesy-based conversation. It is suited for the traveler who intends to visit the countries that feature these 12 languages, but not for the student who is trying to learn one particular language. Alternatively, the book will serve well the student of a language who needs a quick reference for simple phrases, should he stumble.

The book features simple greetings and situational phrases, such as at the airport or the restaurant, along with a brief history of each language. It also has a section devoted to telling time, which I found lacking, since it did not cover all the times of the day (just the times within 9 o'clock, and how to say "noon," "afternoon," and "evening," for example). One of the book's strengths is its phonetic pronunciations for each translated phrase. Although I found some pronunciations were incorrect (in the Lithuanian section), it will help you in a bind.

Phrases in conversations are not helpful.......2000-06-08

Of all the resources I found on learning Hungarian, the tape with this was the least helpful. The conversations have you learning phrases that are unlikely to be used. (Can you imagine that you would be renting a water bicycle on your trip to Hungary?) It can be useful for practice at a more intermediate level, but is not the tape that a beginner needs.

Expensive, but one of the best........2005-02-10

From the introduction: "...follows the tradition of the Spoken Language Series, prepared under the auspices of the American Council of Learned Societies during World War II, but it also takes advantage of more recent pedagogic theory." The original series was developed to teach languages to soldiers fast. This course is designed for speaking Hungarian, not for reading.

Lessons begin with a five to six page conversation, Hungarian on the left, English on the right. The recording speaks the Hungarian and gives pause for repetition. Sentences are built word by word or phrase by phrase, then the sentence is read at normal speed. Only when the student has mastered this, can cover the Hungarian and give the English and vice versa does the lesson procede to pronunciation exercises (many are needed for Hungarian).

There follows the meat of the course, the exercises that make the student fluent in each point of grammar covered. The speaker says sentences in the affirmaltive, the students says it back in the negative, the the speaker says the sentence correctly, and so one with each point of grammar covered. Only when the student can do these easily does the course pass on to "narratives," half-page all-hungarian lreadings using all prelvious material studied.

This is the audio-lingual method and is still used by the State Department to teach languages to its staff.

The price is high, and Amazon appears to offer only the first of two volumes-the second covers lessons thirteen to twenty-four. However, the second volume and tapes can be found through www.booksinder.com.

The Foreign Service Institute has also published an enormous Humgarian reader-more that 400 pages-, and the Army's original Spoken Hungarian may still be available from Spoken Language Services, although its language pre-dates the communist government and is therefore outdated.

My personal favorite is "Learn Hungarian," published in Hungary but available in this country, with cassettes. For thoroughness in every respect it is unrivaled.

The best ever language book.......2000-04-23

Very practical because it starts with conversation all in the present tense. Keeps incorporating what has been learned into each new lesson, thus helping learner retain the language. Conversation is practical, excellent for basic conversation. Find a Hungarian to read into a tape recorder so you can listen to the pronunciation.

This format should be copied by writers of other language books.

Originally published in 1962 by the US Foreign Service Institute to help Cold-War-era diplomats learn Hungarian (thus the emphasis in the reading selections on press conferences and embassy cocktail receptions), this is still rated by students as one of the best textbooks available. Although the topical content and the grammatical explanations are both quaintly old-fashioned, this is the only textbook currently in print that has enough drills and exercises to enable a student to learn Hungarian outside of a classroom setting.

An excellent resource!!.......2003-11-27

This is an absolutely brilliant book! I tutor ESL voluntarily, and this has all the bilingual resources (lists, sentence structures etc.) that I would otherwise have needed to create myself. This is sure to empower any Turk living in an English speaking country to be able to cope in any situation and to improve grammar, speaking and vocabulary. The Turkish phonetics next to the english spelling are invaluable, and the lists are simultaneously comprehensive and relevant. So for any ESL tutors with Turkish students, take the time to hunt this one down. For English speakers, this book is going to make communication with Turkish speakers so much easier. A definite must-have for all those interested in Turkish/English language (depending on mother tongue).

Highly informative, expands your vocabulary imensely........2003-11-01

Anyone who wants to expand their Turkish vocabulary should definitely invest of this book. It contains everything from foods to gemstones to planets and more.

Beware: NOT a Phrasebook!.......2004-09-19

I must agree with the first review that this is NOT a phrasebook at all!
After an introduction of Hungarian grammar on 30 pages or so (which is not bad and the only reason I gave it even 2 stars), there follows an alphabetically arranged dictionary, with phrases containing some of the words listed inserted under the word's listing, and boxed texts on cultural hints scattered throughout.
Calling this a phrasebook is a misnomer!

If you want a real phrasebook, go for the Berlitz or the Lonely Planet one.

Pitiful, avoid it at all costs.......2001-03-10

Rough Guide's HUNGARIAN PHRASEBOOK is one of the poorest phrasebooks I have ever come across. In fact, it isn't even a real phrasebook, but rather a slim dictionary with occassional cultural commentary. This was *totally* unhelpful on my trip to Hungary, and I feel sorry for anyone who has purchased it.

Handy and concise. I've used it recently when I had to resolve a difficult dialogue set in a Budapest cafe. One of the characters tries to impress his fellows with his Hungarian and -embarasses himself! But, seriously, 2176 useful Hungarian phrases that fit in your trousers!

Lovely book but too small for research.......2003-08-19

This is a little itty bitty book. It'd be perfect as a gift to someone vaguely interested in images from the middle ages but it's nearly useless for -real- research. The images are just too small to show all the details.

Les Tres Riches Heures is a fantastic set of medieval illustrations done by the Limbourg brothers at the commission of Duc Berry between 1413 and 1416. It's far far more than just the 12 months included in this book.
