With its vivid yellows, glowing reds, cool blues, and lush greens, Tropical Asian Style evokes the riches of Southeast Asia. Gorgeous color photos of homes from Chiang Mai to Kuala Lumpur demonstrate essential design elements: living spaces open to nature, and accents of wood, textiles, and earthenware. This is a coffee-table book that will enlighten and entertain with its discussion of local crafts, such as basketware, batik, lacquerware, furniture, terra cotta, ikat weaving, Thai silk, garden sculpture, and more. Its sumptuous full-page spreads--from a saltwater pool above the surf in Phuket to a lovely open-air bathroom accented with old beams and seashells--will beckon you to exotic locales and entice you to add a little Asian flavor (a carved teak daybed, a decorative weaving, or more simply, a hammock on the veranda) to your home. --Jhana Bach
Book Description
Tropical Asian Style is the first book to showcase contemporary residences throughout Southeast Asia-from Chiang Mai to Bali, Kuala Lumpur to Java. Featured are houses in more than 20 different locations in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.
Each home is designed to achieve perfect harmony with its tropical surroundings. In this book, the essential design elements of these homes are presented thematically, to show the various ways in which this harmony has been achieved-through the use of breezy verandahs, outdoor pavilions, refreshing pools and elegantly decorated bedrooms, bathrooms and living areas that open onto lush tropical gardens. Superb objets d'art and hand-crafted Asian fabrics and furnishings from around the region are an important hallmark of Southeast Asian homes. Silks, batiks, terracotta tiles and lacquer wares from Thailand and Indonesia, stone garden sculptures from Bali and antique furniture from Java, are only several examples of the many beautiful items examined and illustrated in this book.
This book contains over 400 color photos by world-renowned photographer, Luca Invernizzi Tettoni. Well-known architects, designers and authorities on Asia's cultural heritage provide insightful views on the houses and their design elements. A final section on tropical decorating provides helpful tips on selecting Asian fabrics, furniture and artifacts.
Customer Reviews:
fabulous ideas for open-air living.......2001-07-28
After reading it, I wanted to knock down every wall in my house. Or at least remove the window glass. My next house will definitely be designed based on the rooms in this book.
I didn't read much of the text because the pictures were so captivating. They show every aspect of the tropical Asian house, except perhaps kitchens, which seem to be nothing more than a stove-type device near the dining area. The predominant theme is living among nature and even inviting it to share the living space with you (or is it the other way around?). Instead of windows and doors, you see slatted screens and netting. Very romantic. And a far cry from most of America's obsession with locks and glass. I need to move......
Wish I were there..........2001-03-29
My dream is to be surrounded by teak and orchids, eating curry and sipping lime juice, and not owning any sort of time piece. Since that isn't going to happen for several more years I bought this book. I am neither a designer nor a photographer so my only input is how this book makes me feel. I have come to love Southeast Asia after several all too brief trips to the region and Tropical Asian Style, specifically Tettoni's photos, has brought some life to my dull suburban living room. And, while I realize that this book comprises several distinct cultures, it is the overall effect, not any particular region, that is so overwhelmingly beautiful. If you feel trapped in your American workaholic routine, this book is a wonderful diversion.
Truly Gorgeous Overview of Tropical Asian Luxe.......2000-08-28
This is an excellent look at the best examples of tropical Asian luxury living.
It is not a detailed exploration of regional design elements (look to Bali Style, Thai Style, Tropical Garden Design, et al, for the next degree of depth). It is, however, a rich overview of the best of SEAsian luxury architecture and furnishings.
Every page is simply gorgeous, with photos "bleeding" out past the paper, one trait of a good coffee table or style book. There is little or no image repetition in the coverage of the homes or boutique hotels featured, and each photo is perfectly focused, every composition seen in its best light.
In all the shuffle of Thai grandeur, Balinese earthiness, and Malaysian simplicity, the book might at first glance seem to be presenting a kind of fusion. I think it's fair to say that there is plenty of contemporary blurring of the distinctions between regions, but the reader can also look for regional elements and quickly learn them. Each property is given its own mini-chapter, which helps a lot. And the regional details and sensibilities really come alive when you read the accompanying texts, which are the work of expert style writers.
In fact, the contributors list reads like a who's who of style gurus. There is the clever and quippy Made Wijaya, descriptive Diana Darling, the meticulous William Warren, and details-minded Robert Powell. It's a great read!
Definitely some of the best of Southest Asia..........2000-05-18
I am a collector of Luca Invernizzi Tettoni's work because ALL of them is a visual feast for the eyes. This talented man has a knack for details and never fails to capture the vivid and glowing nuances that represents the best of Southest Asia's style. Take it from me, living in the same environment, I sometimes take it for granted. This book is more than just a coffee-table piece, to complement the gorgeous photography , the text , written by various specialists, will enlighten you with well researched information on local crafts and traditions. It also shows the transformation that SEA architecture and interior designs have undergone; overall a fascinating mix 'n' match of vernacular designs and contemporary style.
Enchanting and Inspirational.......1999-04-03
I bought this book just to reminisce about my childhood journeys all-over Asia and to bring inspiration to my "East meets West" Style, as an Interior Designer. Well, after reading the book I was compelled to go an another journey, a well deserved vacation, perhaps... I just came back from 3-month Antique buying trip in Asia. I visited China, Philippines, Hongkong, Thailand, Indonesia,Myanmar, and Singapore. This book will take you to the same places and show you more than what I covered in three months. Tettoni is truly great...! Check out his other books on Asia, and you'll sure save a lot on airfare...!
Book Description
Traditional textiles are one of the most important and widely collected categories of Southeast Asian art. Formed from an extensive range of locally produced and imported raw materials and an astonishing variety of techniques, Southeast Asian textiles are used to fashion a variety of objects-items from everyday clothing to sacred and ceremonial regalia. This authoritative study considers the various ways Southeast Asian textile artisans reacted over the centuries to the steady stream of new ideas and materials arriving from India, China, the Islamic world, and Europe.Originally published in 1990 by the Australian National Gallery and Oxford University Press of Australia, Textiles of Southeast Asia remains the definitive work on Southeast Asian textiles. This revised edition contains a new foreword and updated color photographs. Unlike other books on the subject, Textiles of Southeast Asia is arranged thematically rather than by country. The result is a strong cultural focus and an analysis of how history influenced the region's textile traditions."
Customer Reviews:
Impressive study of a fascinating subject........2006-02-19
This is an excellent book, meticulously researched and beautifully illustrated. It's approach is thematic with an emphasis on various influences that shaped the history and styles of Southeast Asian textile, as well as the cultural significance that textile played in the region. The works examined were primarily drawn from the excellent collection of the National Gallery of Australia. The commentary on each work is detailed in terms of the techniques and motifs. Although it is quite comprehensive in coverage, because it is organized thematically rather than geographically, if you are looking for the styles and examples of a particular culture, you'll have to pick through the book. Historical photographs offer additional insights into how the textiles were used throughout the Southeast Asia. The writing is good and easy to follow once you get accustomed to the technical terms. I am new to this subject and my reading probably has not yet assessed the full extent of the book's merit.

Book Description
Over the last three hundred years traditional folk pottery in Southeast Asia has changed very little. Simple and practical earthenware pottery has been produced by small family groups using the traditional hand techniques passed down over several generations. This book offers a broad survey of the ceramic craftspeople of Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar (Burma). The work, life, and history of individuals and their communities is portrayed in a rich and fascinating tale that combines color photographs of potters at work and text that describes a potter's life in small, rural villages.
Not only a beautifully illustrated and useful reference book for potters, the book also provides documentation of the traditional craftsmanship and a way of life that appears about to disappear with the current generation of potters. In a region eager to embrace change and readily absorb Western influence, the use of traditional pots is rapidly declining and creating these wonderful ceramic pots are considered of little value by potters' children who have little interest in learning the craft as they become Westernized. The book is a final opportunity to read about cultural insights into the life and work of rural craftsman and is essential reading not only for working potters, but for anyone with an interest in the anthropology and sociology of Southeast Asia.

More than Ceramics.......2005-11-04
'Only by knowing the past can we track a meaningful future.'
Mick knows his material, perhaps better than most Westerners can. Both the photos and the text display compelling evidence of his understanding and compassion for the lives that most of us, even as tourists there, never see. The whole feeling of the book is of love and care for these peoples, their cultures and traditions.
Every photographed object is brilliantly contextualised. The ceramic pieces are not isolated for an arid aesthetic study, but are revealed as part of richly beautiful lives.
The writing style is delightful - easy, picturesque, evocative and quite devoid of dreary academic pretension. As a professional ceramicist himself, Mick describes the technical aspects with absolute authority.
Although the book is about the traditions of ceramics in South East Asia, it is equally a book that questions contemporary values, the impact of global economies and the ongoing destruction of ancient and beautiful cultures. This book cannot be read without some ethical misgivings about the careless path being trampled by Western societies.
Mick has added something truly important to human knowledge.
Living story of a living craft, well told.......2005-07-30
In this handsome, profusely illustrated volume Mick Shippen elevates the seductively simple village pottery of Southeast Asia from an appealing craft into a thoroughly fascinating window on ancient folkways.
Graceful jars, pots and stoves take on a life too seldom found in Asian art books as Shippen introduces us to the aging potters and the strands of tradition and myth that weave their work into a village way of life shaped before roads and money linked the farmers of Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam with a larger world.
Here you will meet the old potter who spits over her impromptu kiln of bamboo and straw to keep her wares from breaking when she fires them. You'll see how the clay is dug--and learn how hard it is to convince the modernizing cadres of the Lao Peoples' Democratic Republic that a good clay deposit deserves to be protected from 'development'. You will feel the claustrophobia of digging a tunnel kiln four meters below the village fields, and the searing heat that blasts the potter looking down to see if firing is complete. Again and again you will feel you have met these distant villagers, and known the drifting evening scent of woodsmoke and fragrant rice cooking in an earthen pot.
The extensive and richly detailed context Shippen provides does not lead him to underplay the pottery itself. He gives gratifying detail of process and product, and the differences between seemingly similar wares, all engagingly photographed. This superb book is capable of changing your travel plans and making you a collector. It is certain to give you a feeling of intimacy with Southeast Asia that most of the volumes on broader aspects of the region cannot approach.

Book Description
Fire and light have long symbolized the relationship of human beings to the universe and its creators. In South and Southeast Asia and the Himalayas, the lamp, as a bearer of light, came to be perceived as a vehicle through which the divine could be accessed. The design, construction, and use of the lamp in these regions have been synonymous with the faith of the devotee since ancient times. Today the lamp continues to play a pivotal role in Hindu and Buddhist religious contexts, allowing the faithful to concentrate on the image or nature of the deity.
The 76 remarkable metal lamps and incense burners illustrated in Flames of Devotion form the heart of a collection assembled by the preeminent scholar of Indian and Himalayan art Pratapaditya Pal and his wife, Chitralekha. They are noteworthy for their ingenious design and diverse crafting, as well as their iconographic richness. They represent fourteen states in India, a majority coming from Rajasthan and Gujarat in the west, the tribal areas in central Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, and the southern states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. In addition, stunning examples of lamps from Nepal and Tibet showcase the skill with which precious metals were employed during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and a small selection of early incense burners and lamps from Cambodia, Indonesia, and Vietnam show the role these objects played in the ancient imagination.
In an engaging and highly informative text, architect and art historian Sean Anderson investigates why lamps have endured and remain omnipresent in Hindu and Buddhist practice. While examining the historical importance of the lamp, Anderson emphasizes that as altar and tool, icon and fine sculpture, it is an evocative reminder of an undying devotion forged with the most common yet enigmatic of materials: metal and fire. He considers as well the liminal space the lamp occupies between the secular and the sacred in societies where it is often used to mark every event of significance from birth to death.
Customer Reviews:
outstanding, unique museum collection of ritual Asian oil lamps.......2007-02-15
The 77 pictured lamps and burners out of a total of over 100 donated by a collector to the Fowler Museum "offer a glimpse into the complexities of the symbolic and ritual systems that dominate daily life in South Asia." Most of the lamps are from India, with the next largest group from Nepal and Tibet, and a few from the Southeast Asia countries of Vietnam, Cambodia, and Indonesia. The oldest ones comes from these latter countries. The large majority of the lamps and burners are from the 19th and 20th centuries. There is not a marked difference between older and later Hindu and Buddhist ritual objects as to spiritual figures depicted, shapes, and design details. The objects don't change as in the Western concept of "art styles" or "historical period styles" for instance. What differences there are are that the later ones, of the 20th century, have somewhat more complexity, or sophistication, in their detail presumably from advanced tools and the use of advanced, more modern, machinery in the making of them. The author Anderson with a background in architecture and design discusses the cultural background, use, and production of the Asian lamps and burners. Besides the age of the particular objects, photo captions concisely identify figures in them, what is distinctive as applicable, and how they would be used. The knowledge of the Indian collector of the numerous objects making for the exceptional, broad collection makes the work, though limited in subject matter, especially useful as an introduction and guide to the lamps and burners.
