Book Description
Two world wars, the Civil Rights movement, and a Jheri curl later, Blacks in America continue to have a complex and convoluted relationship with their hair. From the antebellum practice of shaving the head in an attempt to pass as a "free" person to the 1998 uproar over a White third-grade teacher's reading of the book Nappy Hair, the issues surrounding Black hair linger as we enter the twenty-first century.Tying the personal to the political and the popular, Hair Story takes a chronological look at the culture behind the ever-changing state of Black hair-from fifteenth century Africa to the present-day United States. Hair Story is the book that Black Americans can use as a benchmark for tracing a unique aspect of their history and that people of all races will celebrate as the reference guide for understanding Black hair.AUTHORBIO: Ayana D. Bravo.......2007-08-12
Excellent book about black hair and black culture. Would recommend it to anyone wanting to know more about both and how they relate to the "American" ideal.
A Must-Read for Black Women Everywhere.......2007-07-05
I've recently made the decision to go natural and as I did, I pondered, "Why do I have to 'decide' to be the way I naturally am?" It was then that I realized how unfortunate it was that black women, more than half, find their "naturalness" to be unattractive. I myself have gone through hair extensions, braids, and the dreaded relaxer that has damaged my hair and scalp for years. Now I wonder what it was all for. I wasn't being true to who I was.
This book helped be to know something that I should have already known: my hair. The history of black hair is one that is very interesting and telling. I learned more about my hair in this book than I have ever learned, even from members of my own family. There is also a sense of confidence one gets from reading books like these. I am letting all of my friends and family read it as well.
You will not be disappointed in your purchase.
A beginning..........2007-01-10
This book is great begining for people that are redescovering themselfes aftermaking the decision or are trying to decide wheter go natural or not. It helps you to understand how we got here , how black beauty is not well accepted and why. It make you wonder, questionning yourself and others, and in my case keep learning.
Very informative.......2006-11-19
If you don't already know, this book is definitely worth the time that it takes to read. The book goes into detail about the history of Black hair. Prior to slavery, Africans took pride in their hair. The intricate braid designs date back to that time. It wasn't until after the slave trade that hair straightening became common. Also, it's a little known black history fact that Annie Tumbo Malone was the first black woman entrepeneur to market black hair products. Madame CJ Walker actually worked for Malone before going into business for herself. This book chronicles so much history about Black hair. After reading this book, I was really encouraged to stop chemically processing my hair.
Every Black Woman Needs to Read This.......2005-10-07
I love this book so much. Ayana Byrd really did a thorough job in researching both the psycological and spiritual elements involved in this subject of "Black Hair".
We as African American women are so misguided sometimes about what's beautiful. We've been so scarred from distorted generational beliefs that we've allowed the insecurity of ourselves and the fear of loving who we are to become deeply rooted in our spirits. We listen to those beliefs, accept them, and then pass them down to our daughters to let the cycle of ignorance continue.
I personally had to read this book a few times while I was going through my own journey of growing out my naturally tight curls - just constantly trying to cleanse my spirit and renew my mind in what I considered beautiful. After reading this book, I realized that God wanted me (needed me) to stop relaxing my hair with chemicals, and to start embracing His wonderful creativity of me - to accept myself (including my hair) the way he designed so that I can love myself the way He loves me.
Every Black Woman needs to read this book.

Nice, easy-to-use collection of copyright-free clip art........2004-07-27
If you're looking for a selection of copyright-free clip art to use for websites, posters, flyers, or other projects, this is a nice collection - one of my personal favorites. This particular collection contains only Oriental-style designs, including images of flowers, people, cranes and other birds, fans, vases, fish, wildlife, dragons, butterflies, and more, and also just simple patterns. There are 495 black-and-white images in total, useable with either Windows or Macintosh. The graphics are all quite large on the CD-ROM, so you can re-size them in any graphics program to whatever dimensions you need. They are all available in GIF, JPG, BMP, PICT, TIF, and WMF formats, saved at 600 DPI. The book itself contains a preview of every image, each accompanied by the image number, so you can easily find the one you want on the CD-ROM. The CD fits into a plastic sleeve on the inside back cover of the book for safekeeping. I have used clip art from this and other Dover Clip Art books on numerous occasions, and have been quite happy with it.

Included are black-and-white depictions of people in traditional garb, a generous sampling of nature's bounty, decorative family crests, bold geometric designs, fruit tree blossoms, demons, dragons, and much more.

Very nice for faces, animals and repeating motifs.......2007-10-05
I've been looking through this series for ideas for polymer and metal clay jewelry designs. The faces and figures are lovely, and the repeating motifs of flowers and geometrics are very nice. The dragons are a little lame, but I like Chinese dragons. The gin spirits are delightful and so active, they more than make up for the lazy dragon motifs. A very passible source for design ideas.
Great design source.......2007-03-30
This book offers excellent designs, if you're after an Asian aesthetic the way I am, and the CD-ROM allows you to size the designs on your computer. Very useful for the wearable art and etched jewelry we make!
Disappointing collection.......2006-12-03
Those of you who may have read that this collection has vector art files--beware. There are .eps files but they merely contain jpgs of the clipart. While the selection is OK, I found the artwork to be a little shabby. It seemed like they were scanned from something. Some types of designs that I were hoping would be in there, like kimono motifs, were not. Is it useful? Certainly. Disappointing? Definitely.
Useful Things.......2006-07-03
These designs are useful for the projects listed but they adapt well to other uses such as needlepiont, engraving and ever jewelry designs.I suggest buying this book and cd if you wish to add an oriental favor to your clip art and projects.
Great new designs to use.......2006-02-28
I will be using these ideas and designs for several different types of projects! Can't wait.

Great clip art to build off of........2006-11-03
I was able to take this clip art and modify the vector files to accommodate my design. There was a decent variety to choose from as well. Plus it was cheap.
Book Description
351 exquisite, black-and-white Chinese motifs include mythic figures, intricate floral sprays, pandas resting among bamboo leaves, a tiger stalking its prey, dragons, butterflies, and other flora and fauna — plus stylized renderings of clouds and waves, a portion of the Great Wall, borders of floral, abstract, and repeat patterns, and a host of other motifs.
Customer Reviews:
Problems with the CD.......2007-10-05
I enjoyed the Chinese motifs presented in the book, which is why I purchased it. I was not as impressed with the faces; they're too cartoon like. I loved the animals, florals, and scenes. And there's certainly nothing as active and exotic as the Chinese dragon. Lovely book, but I had trouble even getting the CD to open.
useless .......2005-11-28
For the price of this book with a cd, it is absolutely not worth it. The images are scanned (very crappy job of scanning by the way). They ARE NOT vectors, they're flattened. You have to use a tracing tool yourself in the illustrator or photoshop. Images are very good though, but I would buy just the book without the cd.
Book is cool - CD is worthless.......2005-11-28
The designs in this book are very interesting and useful but the images on the CD are jagged and the EPS files are NOT scalable. This is fine for aspiring designers but any professional will definately not be happy.
Book Description
Much admired and highly prized worldwide, the romantically idealized figures and objects in this superb collection of Japanese prints depict a wide range of subjects — from courtesans, geishas, and samurai to flora and fauna, seascapes, and views of Mt. Fuji. 120 full-color images.

Lovely.......2007-10-05
I've been looking for motifs to use in polymer and metal clays for jewelry, and this book has a stunning collection of faces. It also has several wonderful Hiroshigi's and Hokusai's (particularly and ocean wave I'm fond of). While I'm not sure that the designs will work out as transfers, the book is still enjoyable. I found several artists about whose work I was previously ignorant. Something new to contemplate.
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Easy to use.......2007-02-03
I was disappointed that all the clipart is B&W - no color- but what is there is easily accessed to clip and paste into doc.s.
