Book Description
NEW REVISED EDITION:
More information helpful to ESL students, more focus on selecting the right verb form, more exercises to help you fine tune each sentence. This book is a revised version of our very popular Grammar For Grownups printed in 1992. Still a complete self-study program in a handy workbook format, it provides the same practical techniques and strategies Advanced Communication designs instructors have taught to business and professional people since 1980. In only eight lessons, you'll learn to understand the terms used to talk about writing; write complete, clear sentences; use pronouns and verbs correctly; use commas and punctuation correctly; and avoid confusing commonly confused words. It also includes a self-test so you know exactly what you to need to learn, and what you just need to review. Filled with practice exercises with immediate feedback, the book can be used for self-study or as the text for a class.

Grammar for Computer People Too!.......2004-11-10
I'm a programmer, not an English teacher. Now that our company has grown and I'm writing more reports (status, progress, etc.), I felt like I needed to work on my writing. I went through this book in about four hours and did most of the practice exercises. And believe it or not, I am actually feeling much better about my writing now.
Human Resources Director.......2004-11-09
In our company, at least half of our
employees could improve their writing skills and I find that this is a
great resource because I can use it with entry-level administrative
assistants as well as VP's. We also have many people for whom English
is not their first language and this resource has been very helpful for
them too.
Much Needed!.......2001-12-01
Let me tell you about something embarrassing that happened to me last year. I sent an E-mail to an important client who was angry about a misplaced order. The client replied that he understood what happened and wouldn't hold it against us, which was a relief. Then he pointed out every grammatical error and misplaced comma in my message. For example, I had used "effect" when I meant "affect," and I had created a run-on sentence by using a comma instead of a semicolon. There were other errors as well. After I picked myself up off the floor, I went onto the Internet, looking for help, and I found a great book called Grammar for Grownups. It gave me clear explanations of all those tricky grammar and punctuation rules. It also gave me practice exercises so I could work on my own to improve. Now I proofread every E-mail I send-and now I know what I am looking for.
How to improve your grammar easily!.......2000-05-08
Grammar for Grownups is an easy to use and very helpful self-paced training program. The lessons are presented clearly with appropriate examples and exercises. Each lesson reviews points of grammar that are basic to good writing.Grammar for Grownups is also a good reference book because it is well organized and therefore it is easy to look up specific topics. Being a busy person, I really appreciate the valuable content and the user-friendly design of this book.

A practical and entertaining handbook that will help anyone get their written messages across in a clear and effective way.

Help For Crazy Language.......2005-06-19
I thought I never learn all about this crazy language - and now someone makes sense of it for me. Because I come from another country, I want to speak good English. This book helps me when I come to some phrase I do not understand. I now understand more about English then I thought I would ever learn. Thanks to whoever put this together. I thank you!!!
If You Like This One - Try Just Words.......2005-02-26
I have used my copy of Grammar For Grownups until it is worn. Now I need a new one. When I went to check it out, I saw that Val Dumond, the author, has a new book out, so I ordered that too! Hey, if you haven't tested your prejudice ratio recently, you have to get this book. Just Words, the Us and Them Thing is all about those ways we separate ourselves from other people with our language. She doesn't preach! She just lays out some ideas for the reader to chew on. And oh my! Have I been chewing!!!
This book works.......2001-12-22
I loved Grammar for Grownups. I must have slept through all my English
classes because I was continually getting things bounced back by my
supervisor or Grammar check. Thanks to this book, I finally feel competent
in my use of grammar and punctuation. For example, I finally understand
where to use a semicolon and the difference between semicolons and colons. I
don't think I'll ever again confuse then with than. The instructions, hints
and practice exercises really worked. The book is practically designed-I'm
able to go through the lessons at my own pace and easily review certain
sections. I keep Grammar for Grownups on my desk as a reference and I have
even torn out certain pages and taped them to my wall.
Even though I got A's on my college essays, I panicked at the thought of
writing a report. I really wanted the new position I was offered, but I
knew that I would be required to write many reports. I was about to turn
down the job when a friend suggested I try Reports and Proposals. By
breaking the process into a few easily understood steps, the authors
provided me with a system for approaching any writing task. The practice
assignments in the book were extremely helpful-and very realistic. The only
comment my new boss had about my first report was "Good Job."
Thanks to Professional Writing Skills, my letters, Emails and memos not only
get the results I want, they get praise. That book taught me how to truly
communicate instead of just recycling empty words, the way so many business
documents do. Thanks to its six-step process for getting started, thinking
about your reader, clarifying your main statement and so on, I don't even
panic when I sit down to write. I just start with the first step. I'm also
grateful for techniques on writing active and concise language, using lists.
and correcting grammar and punctuation errors. One of the best investments
I ever made.
Writing Performance Evaluations was the one part of my job I dreaded. I
never knew what to say, I didn't want to make people mad, I was confused
about objectives-the whole process confused me. But a colleague suggested I
try Writing Performance Documentation and it was as if a curtain had been
lifted. The meaningful examples and helpful feedback showed me what is
meant by objective documentation. I learned what words to stay away from
and the kind of details that are necessary to write helpful observations.
This is one of the few times that I found the examples of how not to do
something as important as those that showed the right way. The section on
writing objectives was equally helpful. Because I now use details and facts
when writing documentation and develop objectives that can be easily
measured or observed, people actually thank me for my evaluations. This book
has made a great deal of different in how I see my job.
a great must-have for just about anyone and everyone.......2001-07-24
A great book period. It cleared up a lot of questions that I had about grammar. Even though I am young, I pretty much have perfect grammar (for the most part anyway). Well, I want to keep this short so to sum it all up: A GREAT BOOK! A DEFINITE MUST-HAVE.
Grammer For Grownups: A Guide to Grammer and Usage.......2001-07-18
This is an excellent book! I tried using the Idiot's Guide to Grammer and Style and just wasn't getting "it", so I found a copy of Grammer For Grownups: A Guide to Grammer and Usage for Everyone Who Has to Put Words on Paper Effectively at the library, where I work, and it was a cinch. Very easily written for the average person to understand. A+++

Book Description
Christopher Alexander owns what many now believe to be the finest collection of early Turkish carpets in the western world, with perhaps half being the only specimens of their kind anywhere. In this richly illustrated, oversized volume--featuring four hundred illustrations, eighty in full color--Alexander takes readers on an engaging tour of his fabulous collection. Readers will see a 13th-century Seljuk Carpet with Dragons, a 15th-century Animal Carpet, a scarlet-niched Transylvanian Prayer Rug, a turquoise Lattice Carpet from Alcaraz, a 16th-century blue Medallion Keyhole Design from Bergama, a rare 16th-century White Field Bird Carpet, the dazzling color and brilliant geometry of a 15th-century Karapinar with Three Gulls, and perhaps Alexander's favorite, a 15th-century Star Karapinar with Flowers (whose designs he describes as "the high point of all Sufi art, the state of liberation, in which the artist is so free, that he is able to be completely natural"). In addition, Alexander elaborates on his theory that these carpets teach structure to artists and architects through the beauty of their form. This lavishly produced volume makes an important contribution to the world of rug scholarship. Equally important, Alexander's thoughtful meditations on these pieces will fascinate the many architects, artists, and planners who follow his work.
Customer Reviews:
A pearl of great value.......2006-05-20
I love and leave my books, but I'll never part with this one. I look at it daily and always find something new and edifying.
The book's raison d'etere is Alexander's magnificent collection, displayed in glorious photos. But if you feel frustrated/disgusted or uncomfortable/uneasy toward modern design, art, or architecture, you'll appreciate Alexander's axioms for objectively evaluating the aesthetic quality of the carpets. Alexander hopes that a generalized version of these axioms will save us from the ugliness of modernism and get human beings back into the business of creating truly beautiful things, whether carpets, buildings, comptuer programs, etc. That's why he titled it "A foreshadowing..."
Alexander comments on each carpet in the collection, describing the fascinating detective work that went into placing and dating each piece, as well as pointing out the most noteworthy elements of the patterns and colors. His commentary causes me to appreciate each carpet as a historical piece with tremendous significance to today -- the carpets are seemingly messengers from the past, reminding us of truths that have long been dormant in the human spirit.
He describes the best carpets as evoking a presence that is both human and divine. He says that a reliable way to judge the "better" of two carpets is to ask people which of the two they would choose to represent their own self or soul. Even carpet-naive people will consistently choose the more valuable carpet, even if it's not the one they "like" best. Interesting, right?
Great but not what you would expect.......2002-01-31
Christopher Alexander is known among architects and maybe even more among computer enthusiasts. If you are one of them (us) and know his other work, you would be surprised by this book.
It deals with carpets, specifically Turkish carpets.
A friend of mine lent me this book and I was fascinated. It has a certain passion for its subject and its interesting even if you don't know anything and don't care anything about carpets. Author explains about some items in his quite large collection of carpets and why he finds them not only rare and valuable as an antique but also beautiful.
The beauty of a carpet lies in its pattern and here we get to familiar grounds (as for example in his »A Pattern Language«). A pattern consists not only of the ornament but also of the negative space, the area remaining. He explains on examples from his collection. And one wanders if there is yet another application of his theory beside architecture per se, computer design and carpets.
Still its quite expensive, but if you happen to lay your hands on it, go ahead and enjoy.
One drawback..........2000-05-02
...shoddy binding.
Other than that, the book's great.
What I like about his writing is how relates the way your eye works to the way the carpets are designed and built. He yalks a lot about "centers" and about how a carpet can be that much more enjoyable when your eye can be drawn to sections which can be more-easily digested.
a quick & humble impression.......1998-02-15
I got to take a look at this book in the UMASS non-circulating collection. It was beautiful, covered with a gold patterned cloth. Inside, the paper and reproductions of the carpets and art work were of the very best quality. I read the introduction and skimmed through the subsequent chapters. After my breif encounter with this book, I felt as though I had found the secret heart of Alexander's architectural theories. Somehow his passion for these carpets seemed to be the kernal from which his volumes have sprung.

Great Islamic designs.......2005-11-22
To correct the previous reviewer, these designs are by no means Russian! Neither are they Arabic, but, as the name of the book states, they are Islamic. The designs were collected in Central Asia area, mainly in Bukhara, the center of ancient culture, and are the great sample of the wonderful art of the region.
Great colors.......1999-01-29
If you are looking for arabian designs this is not the book, the designs are russian, but the drawings are very good.

what to think...........2007-08-16
I bought this book and was very excited to recieve it...... unfortunately I was disapointed.... it was not what I expected.... usually I like the Dover books.... I am not sure if I like this one.... it feels out-dated and everything (patterns and color palettes) look the same.
Not as Varied as Expected.......2001-09-04
I was excited that this book was in color and could not wait to recieve it, but was very disappointed. Not only did all the fabrics seem similar, but I felt the patterns were not very different from one example to the next.
Customer Reviews:
Breathtaking in Concept; Awe Inspiring in Execution.......2005-08-25
For forty years this lavishly illustrated book has been the definitive work on Islamic design and architecture. It preserves for posterity the design intricacies of tombs, caravanserais, madrasas, mosques, and mausoleums throughout Iran, Afghanistan, and Turkey. And while we are viewing the stunning, full page color plates, we receive an accompanying historical narrative, covering some eight hundred years, from the Seljuks to the Ottomans. We have verse from Omar Khayyam, drawings of ancient cities, and illustrations of construction techniques. And our disbelieving eyes widen to the stunning color and creativity in the glazed tiles and mosaics. When it was published in 1968 there was little available for scholars of design and architecture in Afghanistan, Iran, and Turkey. That this monumental contribution to the study of Islamic design and architecture is the work of a husband and wife team's ten thousand mile journey is an inspiration.

No words, just pictures.......2000-06-27
This book is a source for visual designers, architects, and interior decorators. It is a reproduction of the plates of a larger theoretical opus Hessemer published around 1840, collecting interesting mostly geometric designs from Italy and Egypt. This has no text at all after the publishers note explaining this, and a list of the plates and their sources, followed by 120 pages of color plates, many with multiple designs. The reproductions of the old plates have lost something through the generations, and aren't particularly accurate regarding the details being presented. When you actually go to Italy and see these things, the reds will pop your eyes out. Docked a star because it's pretty dull here. A clever people would scan the images and alter the colors both to match their needs and to approach the correct clarity and intensity.
The publisher claims some restrictions on rights to reproduce the designs: "You may use the designs and illustrations for graphics and crafts applications, free and without special permission, provided that you include no more than ten in the same publication or project", and, "reproduction of any illustration by any of the graphic service [...] is prohibited." You'd think anything published in 1840 would be Public Domain by now.
We may use the 4th down on plate 96 (parts of the mosaic bands on the Duomo of Florence) in our entry hall.
