Book Description
If you buy into the Pepé Le Pew stereotype of the French – arrogant, stuffy, overly amorous, and rather odiferous (Pepé Le Pew was a skunk. Talk about stereotypical!) – then think again. Not only are the French people some of the most relaxed, pleasant people you'll ever meet, but their society is one of the oldest, most culturally rich societies in the world. So it's no surprise that French is known as perhaps the most beautiful of all languages. Listen to someone speak French – sure, you don't have a clue what she's saying, but aren't you enraptured by the sound of it?
Unfortunately, just because a language is beautiful doesn't mean that it's easy to learn. Although French has many things in common with English, French has had many, many centuries to evolve into the language it is today, which means it's had all that time to become more complex. That's where French For Dummies can help. Written in partnership with the language experts at Berlitz, this book can give you what you need for basic communication in French.
French For Dummies covers the following topics and more:
- Basic pronunciation and gestures
- The nuts and bolts of French grammar
- Meeting and greeting in French
- Situations in which you can use French: Making small talk, dining out, shopping, and talking on the phone
- Traveling to France: Dealing with French currency, staying at a hotel, and getting around town
- Top Ten lists on ways to pick up French quickly, things you should never say in French, favorite French expressions, and important French holidays to remember.
- Appendixes with verb conjugation tables, as well as a French mini-dictionary
French For Dummies also comes with a CD that has audio transcriptions of all the exercises in the book, so that you can actually hear the French pronunciations.
So whether you're taking a business trip and need to pick up a little French quickly; you're cramming for your high school French final; or you've always wanted to learn a new language but don't have the time to drag yourself to a class once a week, French For Dummies can get you well on your way to becoming fluent in no time.

Not bad.......2007-05-09
It can be a good book for beginners...it is for sure. I did not expect anything as i knew already it would be presented like that.
In general, you can find really necessary material there, so , good luck to the learners of French!!!;)))
Should be called French BY Dummies.......2006-11-05
The written portion was pretty good and concise. Though I wish it had some sort of abridged French to English dictionary. The CD, on the other hand, is quite possibly the dumbest CD I've ever listened to. First they do a long conversation in French b/t two people (various topics: i.e., flying on a plane, making a reservation at a restaurant, etc), then they go through each line one by one, and give you time to pronounce it yourself. Sounds good, right? Well, they neglect to tell you just what the heck you're saying. They NEVER translate it to English. A couple of the conversations can be found in the book (though you have to search for them, the audio CD doesn't tell you where) but most are not in the book, in English, to follow along. My wife and I were AMAZED they didn't give you the English translation. So, if you use this CD, you'll end up with great French pronunciation, you just won't know what the heck you're saying. This dummies book must have been written by a bunch of dummies.
Good primer for beginners.......2002-12-14
No book can make you fluent in a language. But this is a great resource for those who only want to learn enough to get by while traveling or who want a good back-up for other instructional methods.
You'll get a solid working vocabulary, easy-to-understand pronuciation tips and a foundation in basic grammar.
Good as a supplementary learning tool.......2001-11-18
I have come to the conclusion that one can NOT learn french without attending the old-fashion French class-room based seminars! I tried books, audio-cassettes, and interactive PC softwares yet I made no progress! But once I started attending the classes, all the books and cassettes I had helped me to advance at a rate faster than all my class-peers!
Having that in mind, this book is a good book to read once you start a French course. It's comprehensive on the basic concepts and it's fun to read as well. It will give you some tips that your French instructor might miss or overlook. It will also enhance your vocabulary.
The CD however is quite disappointing! It pronounces the alphabet, which is good. But only few of the conversations are available on the CD. I think that if they had the pronounciations of various words available as well then it would've been much more helpful.
If you're expecting to learn French by reading a funny book or by listening to cassettes while driving, then get real! Learning a new language is a difficult task. Don't expect that a book or a cassette will make it any easier.
A blank page & a missing track on the CD.......2001-10-14
I purchase this book 3 days ago in North Sydney, & I realise that page 247 is blank, unlike other blank pages, this page has no indecation that it is purposely blank with a page number.
I went to Dymocks Bookstores at North Ryde to verify if the copy I had purchased was a fault, not so, in fact they had 2 copies to prove that it was a fault during print.
I would like to know if this fault is found in other cities and countries.
Another issue is the audio CD icon on page 279, either the dialogue roleplay is not on the CD, or the track was missing on the CD.
I have not yet gone over the material as yet, but in less then 3 days, I was able to notice these general errors, and I have some troubles going to dummies.com to look for the missing - page 247.

Customer Reviews:
This is NOT FOR DUMMIES!.......2007-10-01
Learning a foreign language isn't easy but this set allows your eyes and ears to work together! I bought this because I'm traveling to St Bart's and want to acquire some profiency in French. Regular guide books give you phrases and words with phonetic pronunciation but hearing a French person pronounce the word itself far surpasses sounding out a written phonetic pronunciation. I, for one, was very pleased with the three CD's and the book. I feel they worked very well together. Also, the book itself is small enough to carry in your purse or pocket and provides a quick reference as you travel.
Un Pieu!.......2007-08-09
On a recent trip, I decided to purchase this so I could listen in the car on my way to my destination. I guess I was expecting too much.
A lot of the first CD is fine to listen to without the book, but the majority of it needs the book! They start of with singular words and quickly progress to full sentences. You must be looking at the book or you will quickly change this to music in your CD player - you will get lost in no time. I thought that's what an audio series were for?
Either way, I wouldn't recommend it. It's too dependent on the book. Isn't that the point?

Plants Grown Up and Polished Cornerstones.......2005-01-12
I dislike overusing dead words, but AWESOME entirely fits this pair of Doorposts treats. Bible study. Character development. Trait log. Skill-building curriculum. Curriculum - period.
There's something - uh - extra in these two books, too. There is a peace, a gentleness, a nourishing tucked into every page. That's not something I find in just any book. To me it says these books are prayed for and prayed over and prayed through - and that's all on the Forsters' writing and assembling end of the book. On my end of the book, I'll be praying for these truths to root and grow in my children, praying over each assignment and how we'll use the chapters, praying through the years that my children grow into the man and woman of God that He ordained. That growth does not happen by accident, but by careful planning and diligent plodding, even on - or especially on - the hard days of child rearing.
In Plants Grown Up, your sons - and grandsons, and church group, and homeschool group - can study, for example, leadership by making Godly decisions and leading the family in worship, self-control over his emotions and manners and tongue, faithfulness in performing a job, honoring God's day of rest, giving to those in need, sharing the Gospel, and loving a wife.
Stacked loosely in chronological order, you can start in the early pages with your younger boys, and allow them to grow through the book. Pam encourages you to make choices for YOUR boy, like picking through a buffet for what best suits. These projects can be a weekend treat, or part of your curriculum and, as such, Pam has suggested topic areas for each "Plants" assignment: Bible, handwriting, math, research, writing, speech, history, foreign language, logic, reading, and more. Find ways to evaluate your son, too. I read through the Courage evaluation on page 117-118, and found myself asking those questions of myself. (Does HE put things off? Is HE afraid to fail? Ouch, Pam!)
This is a rich assortment of line-upon-line, precept-upon-precept ways to build your son into the man the Lord desires he become. And not all is reading and writing - there's plenty of DO-ing. For example, "Set up your savings boxes, and divide any money you earn or receive into different budget categories." "Plan and host a birthday party for one of your siblings or friends..." (Ah, Mom. Do I HAVE to eat cake?") Add to all of this much study in the rich wealth of the Word.
You'll find the same richness in Polished Cornerstones for your daughter - granddaughter, and other young women you aspire to mold for Jesus.
When I first opened this book to begin reading and writing, I "accidentally" opened to page. 78 - "A Wife's Evil Influence" whereupon I found a chart comparing the ill affects of wives in the Bible. To this chart, I will likely add Job's wife. She was such an encourager: "Curse God and die." The previous page charts two wives who had a good influence. This type of assignment does not leave room for wondering what kind of wife God prefers my daughter to grow into.
The next "flip" took me to several charts on Forgiveness and Bitterness in the Bible, and a chart on God's revenge. These are housed in the "A Peacemaking Woman" section. Again, Pam is not leaving room for wondering. She makes it seem like the Word of God is easy for us to understand and practice. And, she's right. Another flip. Now, I'm looking at "A Devoted Woman" and the question on "How do (parents, aunts, and uncles) treat your grandparents?" And the chart on "Honoring Elders." One more flip. "An Organized Woman" and questions like, "Does she collect 'junk'? ... Is she too organized, growing anxious or angry when forced to deal with the unexpected?" If you're like me, you'll be evaluating yourself along with your daughter!
You and your daughter can grow with Polished Cornerstones, writing goals with "A Goal-Oriented Woman" and asking yourself how those goals will enable you to glorify God. A studious woman will copy passages from the Bible and write her name into them to personalize its truths. The determined woman will keep a record of her times of testing and their outcome. How did she respond? How did God prove Himself faithful?
Pam graciously supplies curriculum headings to help you keep track as you use the book with or instead of other study helps: government, research, law, finances, English, composition, handwriting, reading, Bible, research, family, business education, and more.
There's just so much in these books. Both spiral-bound, softcover books offer more than 500 pages of projects and ideas and training to keep you busy throughout every teaching year of your sons' and daughters' lives.

Beautiful calligraphy.......2007-04-09
Beautiful calligraphy! Botts is extremely versatile in the hands (fotns) he's mastered.
A way to engage people in Bible studies.......2000-08-17
This book consists of 60 calligraphic renderings of Bible passages and an very short explanation by Botts as to why he chose to render the passage as he did. This explaination shows how his art engaged him in a reflection on the passage and how his study of the scripture inspired his art. This is much along the lines of Jo Milgrom's Handmade Midrash. For anyone who is themself interested in calligraphy, for those interested in art as prayer, or those interested in using art as a means of encouraging bible study this is an excellent resource.
Both amazingly beautiful and incredibly meaningful........1998-07-12
"Door Posts" is one of those rare books to which you return again and again, with each visit bringing additional joy and inspiration. Many thanks to Timothy Botts for this extraordinary gift of spiritual and artistic light to readers everywhere.

Worth reading........2007-09-01
If you want to keep the occult completely out of your life, read this book.
A very worthwhile read..........2007-07-04
After being a catholic for more than 40 years, my brother (a former catholic) had tried to get me to read the Bible more and rely less on the teachings of the church. This was difficult for me, because I was in a leadership position in our parish. I was a lector and an educator in the church's RCIA program, an adult education program for those wishing to convert to catholicism.
My brother bought me this book, but I put it aside and didn't bother reading it. I thought it was propaganda that twisted the catechism for the purposes of bashing catholicism.
Well, despite being a life-long catholic and despite being someone who actually was charged with teaching the catechism, I began to read the Bible and listen to a very educated Bible teacher. Many of the messages the teacher was giving me ran directly contrary to the teachings of the catholic church -- teachings I had, myself, been giving to others.
In time, through my own self-education within the Bible itself, with research into scripture, with the help of learned Bible teachers and students as well, I finally came to the conclusion that the catholic church had strayed away from the truth of the Word. While the church may have, at one time, been true to Word, it clearly no longer is.
The church taught me that my salvation was based on how I behaved, that I could be doomed to hell for my sins if I didn't seek absolution, and that is simply not the case.
It was only after I learned the truth that I turned to this book. In that context, I highly recommend this book, even though there are certain parts that may bear further investigation on the part of the reader.
My advice, particularly to those who are questioning the catholic church, is to read this book but don't take it completely on it's own. Instead, get yourself an Old Scofield Study Bible, read this book and research the material presented--then come to your own conclusions.
The bottom line is that you can develop a completely personal relationship with God, that you don't need any organized religion to filter or otherwise mold that relationship, and salvation is a free, permanent gift that requires no church affiliation to obtain. It is yours for the asking.
And remember: this is an honest review from a former life-long catholic who, after more than forty years and having been a lector and educator, found the truth in the Word. My relationship with the Lord has never been stronger, my life of worship never fuller, my happiness never greater.
Good luck!
The very best book ever exposing false Catholic teaching.......2007-01-03
This book is so good I don't know where to start. It exposes all the false teachings of Roman Catholicism simply by presenting scripture alone. The book even cites the Roman Catholic Catechism to show precisely what the RCC really believes on each topic, so there is no mistake in quoting their actual beliefs. This a great witnessesing tool, where you can easily turn to a particular section and find what you need in minutes. It gets right to the point.
terrible, a blatant lie.......2006-02-26
I was a convert from Roman Catholicism to a bible based, born again church. I fell for the lies about my faith for about two years. I decided to study the Catholic faith so that I could be a good witness to these folks. Reading this book along side the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the bible has converted me back to the Roman Catholic Church. I will not live a lie. The truth is not a somewhat or a something, but a person. And that person is Jesus Christ and His body is the Catholic Church.
2 Corinthians 11:13-15 says: For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is not strange if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.
Outside of the Catholic Church this is what your dealing with.
Catholicism contradicts the Word of God, Jesus Christ...........2005-12-28
Exposes MANY of the false doctrines of Catholicism. Jesus warned us in Matthew 15:9 - "BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING FOR DOCTRINES THE COMMANDMENTS OF MEN." If your worship is IN VAIN, are you going to heaven or hell on Judgment Day??? The pope won't be your judge! What happens to ALL LIARS on that day (Revelation 21:8)??? Hebrews 5:9 declares Christ became the author of eternal salvation "UNTO ALL THEM THAT OBEY HIM". Does the Catholic church OBEY HIM BY DELETING HIS 2ND COMMANDMENT - EXODUS 20:4-5 - NO GRAVEN IMAGES??? If you TAKE AWAY FROM HIS HOLY WORD, your name will be TAKEN OUT OF THE LAMB'S BOOK OF LIFE (Revelation 22:19). Pray to the Father in Jesus' name for wisdom and understanding, and study Revelation 17 & 18....

extraordinary book.......2006-12-18
Ruth Gruber has written an extraordinary and unusual book. She has a unique way of writing, revealing a country and the people present and vanished in clear, powerful, beautiful ways. For example, she describes how you notice the empty spaces on doorposts where the mezuzahs used to be. This small, perceptive insight will be one that stays with me and I know when I visit eastern Europe in the Spring I shall be looking at doorposts.
