"Perfect margins and ideal spacing won't prevail over dull, poorly written work," counsel the authors of this book. Still, why would you let sloppy formatting obscure an editor's first encounter with your brilliant words? Formatting & Submitting Your Manuscript will help you, yes, format and submit articles, nonfiction books, short stories, novels, scripts, poetry, even greeting cards. There's no reason, the authors say, to "mangle or otherwise abuse" your work in order to get it to fit a format, but whenever possible, you might as well give the editors what they want. It's all here: queries (electronic, faxed, and otherwise), sidebars, market analyses, manuscripts, treatments, etc. Each element is handled through the use of examples, submission tips, formatting specs, and "other dos and don'ts." Strewn throughout are words of wisdom from those on the submission-receiving end, among them Robin Dolch, a senior editor at ICON Thoughtstyle. "We can always tell when people are going to be very hard to work with," Dolch says. "It's when they're willing to do very little work up front before getting a contract." --Jane Steinberg

Great resource for this aspiring writer. I am just approaching attempts at publication, and am grateful for this guidance on my way.

5 out of 5 stars The end-all be-all of formatting guides........2003-05-22

This is probably the best guide to document formatting I've seen yet. Of course, half the staff at Writers Digest magazine wrote it! Most of them are writers or editors as well, so it only makes sense that it would be good.

I looked at several different formatting books in my search for the best. Many of them got great reviews when they were released. The problem is, most of them are more than 5 years old. With the publishing business changing as rapidly as anything else these days, you need an updated resource to follow, especially if you are new to the business of writing - and yes, it is a business. In business, things are expected to be done a certain way, and this book shows you that way.

This book is chock full of full page examples of everything from proposals, cover letters, tables of contents, etc. It's broken down into sections like most of the other books, each one covering a topic such as articles, novels, and screenplays.

If you want a book that is easy to follow when formatting your manuscript and writing the associated correspondence to an editor/publisher/agent, this is the book for you. The example documents even show you how many spaces to leave between lines etc. I don't think they could have made it any easier if they had sent someone to my house and had them walk me through the formatting!

One thing I thought disappointing was mentioned by another reviewer. Personal essays is mentioned on the cover, but after a quick search, I wasn't able to find that topic covered at all in the book, even in the index. My guess is that it's assumed that these documents would be handled according to guidelines from a different section, although which section eludes me.

Overall, this is the best book out there. It's new, and covers the currently accepted formats for a plethora of documentation. If you're searching for a book like this, spend the money, it's well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Easy, Simple, Great Guideline!.......2003-02-22

This book is a great guide for those at the submission process! I would never have known that there were general guidelines to follow when submitting your fiction, etc and probably earned myself rejection letters because of it. But with this guide, I know that at least I used industry standards upon submissions.

This book also has great examples of query and cover letters. I recommend this to anyone new to the submission process of publishing!

4 out of 5 stars Read this before you submit your work.......2003-01-20

It may save you some rejections. The instructions are very clear, concise, and cover all ranges of manuscripts. Since I am working on submitting novels, this was the section I read the most thoroughly. There are two sample query letters to study, part of a synopsis, a cover letter, and lots on formatting the manuscript itself. I highly recommend this. You'll learn how to make your work look more professional and more appealing.

3 out of 5 stars So-so.......2002-03-09

This book is all right as a basic guide on how a manuscript should more or less look, but the author fails to say, "By the way these aren't set in stone." For example, if you send in a screenplay I doubt it'll get turned away just based on how far down you spaced to start your first line (unless you did something silly like start at the bottom!). Good for an idea but don't let yourself take it as gospel.

5 out of 5 stars Visually Clear.......2007-10-01

I have not read from covereth to covereth in this book, and that is part of the beauty of it. If you are a visual and tactile type learner; such as myself; this is a very useful book. Not only does it explain very clearly how you are to write your proposal (they have other things too) it also gives you a visual example to look at. So when it may be sometimes be confusing (in some other books) to try to figure out visually how to create what is written, this book clears the air on that and has easy steps to follow and matching visuals. I give it two thumbs up. Check it out and see what you think. :)

5 out of 5 stars Good up-to-date information.......2007-01-04

I bought this for my brother who is writing a non-fiction book on WWII and the Marshall Islands and needed some basics. This did a terrific job of providing him with what he needed to be able to submit his manuscript correctly and learn about the business.

4 out of 5 stars A good guide to dealing with agents and publishers.......2006-08-04

Cynthia Laufenberg's book provides all the essentials on the way to approach agents and editors. It covers well the basic across all the main genres. However it does not provide detailed stylistic information such as is offered in the Chicago Manual of Style.

Formatting and Submitting Your Manuscript is perhaps one of the best books for writers on how to prepare than manuscripts for submission. Many times I have been asked by fellow writers how to format pages to a novel manuscript and I tell them about this book. It covers everything from query letters, cover letters, proposal packages and manuscript pages to formatting an SASP or self-addressed stamped postcard. It also touches on front matter such as prefaces, dedications and epigraphs. This is a great addition to any writer's library.

This volume is worth the price for any Cantigas de Santa Maria enthusiast simply for the color plates (although many of these are repeats of those presented in the 1984 book by Keller and Kincade, Iconography in Medieval Spanish Literature). The index, a logically categorized list of specific aspects of daily life in the miniatures, is very thorough indeed and should be extremely useful for further research in Cantigas iconography. The short discussions about each general category do not delve very deeply, and are again only useful as a springboard for further research. Though the written content is not what I would have exopected, for those of us who do not have regular access to the facsimiles, this book is a major blessing.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent, and "illuminating" introduction to Middle Ages.......2001-05-08

"An illumination is a picture, design, or decoration drawn on a manuscript page" (Jonathan Hunt, from the "I" page in "Illuminations").

Jonathan Hunt uses this ancient--colorful and exquisitely detailed--method to introduce readers to a glossary of terms and concepts from the Middle Ages. Arranged in alphabetical order, readers are often introduced to more than one concept per letter, for example on the page devoted to "Knight," terms like chivalrous men-at-arms, king, lord, lady, page, squire, fief and the Round Table are mentioned.

As another reviewer suggests, this is not really an alphabet book for younger readers. Although "Illuminations" is done in picture book format--and the illustrations are a pleasure to browse--because of the way Hunt lovingly approaches his subject, it is an ideal introduction to Medieval times for upper elementary grade students, and perhaps all the way up through secondary. In reading it as a school librarian, I learned some things I didn't know before.

In my review of Marguerite De Angeli's Newbery Awarding winning Medieval novel, "The Door in the Wall," I suggested that a book like "Illuminations" would be ideal for introducing middle-grade readers to the language and terminology of this fascinating period of history. This is a resource that teachers and students in our elementary school often turn to. Highly recommended.

If you get this book, be sure to read "A Note From the Author;" About the Art;" "Suggested Reading;" and the Bibliography in the back.

5 out of 5 stars A medieval ABC book but not for preschoolers.......2000-12-28

The publisher states this is for all ages. My interest in this book was my fascination with ABC books as a method of teaching my children the alphabet and to read as well as a budding interest in medieval times.

At least one of the pages is featured per letter; sometimes the illustration goes across two pages. The illustrations are beautiful and highly detailed. With each word there is a 3-4-sentence explanation of what the word is about. The author states he has gone to great lengths to make the illustrations historically accurate. The author quotes 15 references as the source of his information and he so loves all things medieval that he includes 5 recommended reading materials for readers who are interested in learning more. I love the purist stance the author takes and appreciate the recommended reading section. It is apparent that this is a labor of love for Mr. Hunt.

As the homeschooling mother of young children I say: The featured letter is shown in capital form only and highly decorated which is not conducive to teaching young children the alphabet. The words are medieval in nature and therefore not in everyday language of young children. Examples are excalibur and oriflamme. The text is written in language that may be difficult for even young readers to understand, let alone preschool-aged children. Older children with an interest in medieval times will love this book.

As an adult interested in medieval times, I found this a fun book with lovely illustrations. I enjoyed learning some basic information about some medieval terms.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book to Teach Students About the Middle Ages.......2000-05-08

I have taught at both the Middle and High School levels and found that Illuminations by Jonathan Hunt is a wonderful way to introduce the medieval period to young adults. This book is not just a childrens book. Illuminations introduces the students to important vocabulary words relating to the Middle Ages in a fun and visually stimulting manner. The author takes each letter of the alphabet and associates it with something medieval. The illustrations are breathtaking and compliment the students understanding of what illuminations were all about. I highly recommend this book to young and old alike.

Book Description

Written by the author of the best-selling Francis: The Journey and the Dream, this brief meditation describes Francis' method of prayer. Francis considered this threefold path to God a precondition for anyone wishing to achieve a spiritual interior life. The path has three loves which are really the same: loving God through loving others, through loving nature, and through loving one's self. Focusing on the Other through love is the very center of Franciscan thought. How we love and the extent of that love then teaches us how to pray. Francis is sometimes portrayed as a dreamy romantic, a knight-errant, a troubadour, a poor fool for the poor Christ. The book shows how Francis was also very much a realist and how his three-way path fits practically within day-to-day living. The book shows how embracing others, especially the poor and rejected, is a way of embracing those parts of ourselves we haven't yet accepted; thus we're brought to a new healthier sense of the body and of sexuality. The world is good and holy; this is the Franciscan gift to the world. This slim book offers enriching help for spiritual seekers, for those looking for a more affirming way to pray, for those in need of self-forgiveness and love, and for those working toward social justice. It's also a delight and a treasure for Francis devotees and for anyone who wants to find "the Francis within."

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars An appetizer of the Franciscan charism. .......2005-08-03

Truthfully, this merits closer to 3.5 stars. The reader can expect the same mystical, romance-filled style from Father Murray here with a very specific formula to follow Francis. Just as the appetite is whetted though, the text ends. Expect Bodo to briefly touch on his three prong approach in the 38 page "booklet". If you're after a Fransican review or a "Reader's Digest" version this is a nice read for one sitting. If you're after something more substantial and in-depth then look for his previous book, "The Way of St. Francis".

5 out of 5 stars Insight into design analysis.......2001-02-10

This book is a must for art historians, designers of objects, students of the development of thought in Europe, and everyone who appreciates careful, extremely intelligent research, which opens up fresh vistas on the birth of Europe.

If you are fascinated by the early Irish texts and illuminations, you need this book, to better appreciate the extraordinary capacity of their authors to structure their work on principles of design which I found (and find) astonishing.

If you are not, but enjoy thought-provoking reading on matters which need re-thinking (how Europe came to be, for instance), the rigor and originality of Stevick's work will satisfy... and refresh your questions.

Stevick himself would not claim so much; the (great) value of his work is for us to decide.

        Book Description

The book discusses principally the iconography and text of a mid 15th century copy of the mystical treatise Horloge de Sapience in the most sumptuously illuminated ms. known of the text. Each of the 36 illuminations is discussed in turn, with reference to their pictorial traditions, to the French textual matter and to a unique contemporary commentary, called the Declaration des hystoires. The Declaration is one of the earliest essays in the history of art criticism to survive. The study is rendered useful for teachers and scholars by an English translation of the text of the Declaration, which enables the reader to see the illustrations through the eyes of a 15th century critic.

          Book Description

Reading Images focuses on the multi-layered relationships between the textual image and its reader-viewer in the Apocalypse manuscripts produced in England during the thirteenth century, a period of profound changes in the social and cultural fabric. The exponential expansion in the production and dissemination of illuminated manuscripts that occurred at this time provided a critical, cultural mechanism for the creation of new technologies of the self. As the Apocalypse narrative was visualized in pictures, it became a powerful paradigm within which problematic contemporary experiences such as anti-Judaism, the later Crusades, and expectations of the world's end could be defined. Reading Images explores the kinds of contemporary mythologies that constitute ideology, a realm in which visual representation becomes an agent rather than a reflector of social change.
