Book Description

Two CD set pronunciation practice guide accompanies the book Creole Made Easy. Ideal for students of the Creole language, newcomers, and visitors to Haiti. The CD set covers:

How to pronounce Creole letters and words, the basic elements of Creole grammar, sixteen easy 15-20 minute lessons, and easy practice exercises in English with Creole translation.

The Creole words and sentences in each of the sixteen lessons of the book Creole Made Easy are spoken so that the student may listen and practice. The Creole words and phrases are first spoken slowly and deliberately for maximum pronunciation emphasis. They are then repeated at a slow speaking pace with slight inflection for better contextual practice.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars a great intro to Haitian Creole.......2007-04-03

I recently took a trip to Haiti, and in preparation for the trip I used the Creole Made Easy materials, including the Pronunciation Guide cd, and the Workbook. I used all three of them together, so I'll review them together as well.

Creole Made Easy is an excellent introduction to the Haitian Creole language. It provides the basic building blocks in terms of grammar and sentence structure from which to go further. This book is not an "emergency Creole" book, and didn't have anything by way of greetings, phrases to use while traveling, etc. Being in Haiti, those things were very easy to pick up, especially with some of the basic grammar under my belt. The Workbook is split into two sections, the first with exercises that correspond to each of the 16 lessons in Creole Made Easy. The second half of the workbook has more practical lessons like: numbers/time, months/days/seasons/weather, colors, family/friends, marketplace/food, around the house, and health and medicine. Indispensable to learning any foreign language is listening to it, and the Pronunciation Guide cd was excellent in that regard. I found that it was great practice for listening to the native speakers (though even then, I was listening too slowly most of the time) and great for understanding how to pronounce all of those nasal sounds. There were a couple of moments of frustration in using Creole Made Easy: there were a couple of misspellings; sometimes a word or phrase was used seemingly out of nowhere and wasn't listed in the mini-dictionary in the back of the book; a couple times a grammatical structure or phrasing was used and I had no idea why it was used that way, and it wasn't explained. This happened very few times, and can sometimes be a good problem-solving exercise that you need good practice for when trying to have actual conversations with Haitian people.

Of the eight people who went with me on my trip to Haiti, I was one of two who used Creole Made Easy, and the only one who completed all 16 lessons. I think some of the others used the Pimsleur cds (not any books). I was by far the best Creole speaker/listener and felt like I was in a perfect position to learn exponentially more while I was there. I was told over and over again "ou pale Creole byen!" ("you speak Creole well!") which I shrugged off for awhile until it began to sink in that this was true. Also, I wish I would have brought Creole Made Easy along with me instead of the Hippocrene Haitian Creole/English dictionary, because I think the dictionary in the back had a better selection of words and phrases I wanted to say. The Hippocrene has no phrases at all, and often didn't have the words I was looking for. All this said, I would strongly recommend the Creole Made Easy materials to anyone interested in learning Haitian Creole.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent intro to Creole!.......2007-04-01

I highly recommend this book for beginners! I use it everday along with the CD to assist me in proper prounciation of Creole words.

3 out of 5 stars Mr. Turnball's patience shows in his pronunciation........2006-07-21

Although, I think the subject matter of the tape is a bit dated or is more relegated to country living ~25 -40 years ago, Mr. Turnball's pronunciation is impeccable. His pronouncing of each syllable provided to us, the listener is with great patience. I know whereever he taught, he loved the art of teaching. Even though much of the CD and the corresponding book have pratice pieces about archaic Haiti rather than the present times, listening and repeating after Mr. Turnball will help you with the language even when the subject matter makes you laugh. Would I recommend the book, I'm not sure that I could recommend it to someone that has more than an inkling knowledge of the language, but if you are just starting out as I was a year and a half ago, the book and CD will get you ready for the Haitian Creole CD/book I subsequently purchased by Pimsleur a couple of months ago.

5 out of 5 stars Great accompaniment to the book.......2004-05-28

Great cd's. The speaker is clear, the quality is good. The phrases are repeated to give you time to practice. A lot is covered in the 16 lessons, if you master them you will be able to converse on a simple level. Vocabulary is included in each lesson so you learn the vocab as you go along.
If you get the book as well, you won't have spent much and you will be much further along in your quest to learn creole. I rarely have to call for a translator now when dealing with my patients.

This will be difficult for any beginning English speaker to use. The introductory information is spoken rapidly and will not be understood by someone learning the language. The "exercises" only pronunce the words once with little time for the student to repeat the word. I can see lots of students getting frustrated with this program very quickly.

This is most helpful in every way - large font - definitions as well as pronounciation guide. A great bargain.

5 out of 5 stars That's Easy for you to Say.......2007-09-12

I like being able to listen to the word being pronounced. The program loaded easily and I did not need to call and get any codes. I loaded it on my laptop with Windows XP and on my desktop with Windows 2000 and it did fine. The only complaint I have is if I want to upgrade to Windows Vista I will have to purchase a new disk.

5 out of 5 stars That's Easy For You To Say.......2007-08-23

I get tongue tied over many of the names, especially in the Old Testament. This book gives me much more confidence when teaching Bible classes and preaching.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Confidence.......2006-11-06

That's Easy For You To Say instills confidence in any Pastor or Teacher with word pronunciation. I teach Bible Study quite frequently and when the text is filled with difficult words, I can feel the congregation waiting to see if I will pronounce the word correctly, or trip all over it. When you use the CD, and the program pronounces the word for you, you are no longer guessing, you have amazing confidence when reading the scriptures. I do a word study with each lesson and I use the CD to ensure I am ready to read the text without stumbling. Each verse then becomes so easy and you have such confidence it is absolutely amazing. If you care about being your best when reading the scriptures, this book will be a tremendous value that will provide a life time of pastoral help.

1 out of 5 stars NOT Good; Please Read.......2005-10-28

I had installed this application on WIN98. It worked flawlessly. I loved it!

However, I purchased a new WINXP system and became aware that the software will not install on XP systems! This problem is not a fluke. EVERYONE with an XP system is having the problem, according to search engines.

I found WORDSearch bible software which will install it within its program...But it will not read any names beyond "A" (i.e any names that do not begin with "A", it will not even list)?

Hopefully the publishing company will provide a new version, update or someother fix.

4 out of 5 stars Great Pictures, interesting book.......2007-08-25

I purchased this book for my three year old. She loves the pictures and we play find-it type games with them (ala - Waldo). The only real downfall is that while the Spanish words for many of the items in the picture are around the edges of each page, no pronunciation is included. I'm sure that's no big deal for parents who already speak Spanish, but unfortunately, I cannot read the words to my daughter since I don't know the Spanish rules for pronunciation. Sure, you can go to the internet and after typing in the page number and going through several clicks, hear a single sound clip of the word. That doesn't help me at bedtime, though. I would love to see a phonetic pronunciation under each word. Then, we'd be set!

5 out of 5 stars Fun, Friendly, and Factual.......2003-10-02

Tired of boring and bland spanish tools? This book is bursting with vivid, whimsical, illustrations depicting everyday life with humor and clarity that will attract even beginning adult students. The apealing story type pictures not only define spanish words, but they also promote spanish interaction between reader and child or student with student. On "la cocina" page, a father washes dises amidst a swirling pandemonium of dropping dishes, spilt juice, and a todler with a pot on his head. A teacher or parent could easily springboard off of this illustration to begin to form whole sentences based on the action in the picture.

This intriguing book is sure to be a winner with you and children alike.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful for Toddlers.......2002-07-09

First Thousand Words in Spanish is an enjoyable book with playful, colorful illustrations. We are a bilingual household and so this is a great way to share Spanish with our child (2 1/2 yrs old) and have fun in the process. There are so many details in the pictures that you can read it over and over. This would be a great gift for a bilingual household for a child one and older.

5 out of 5 stars Learning Spanish for a missions trip.......2002-02-02

This book really helped me work on my pronunciation and vocabulary for a mission trip I took to Mexico in early January. I plan on passing it on to my daughter as she gets older...

3 out of 5 stars Not recommended as one's primary resource to learn Spanish.......2001-04-18

There are pictures with the corresponding Spanish definition but the literal English translation is not included. I find this to be a bit challenging for some of the items as there can be multiple English words referring to a single object and without the exact English translation you aren't sure. For example, there is a picture of a 3 drawer dresser defined as comoda. In English this could be nightstand, dresser, bureau... Also some of the pictures are difficult to distinguish. One page has a picture of a sheet and of a pillow and they look almost identical.

My two-year-old and I took this to Morocco with us and popped it out at the end of every day. It was a fantastic companion, then, to what we were hearing in conversation, because the words and pictures were quite complementary to what we were encountering in everyday life. We were able to use it to isolate words we were hearing and piece together what folks were talking about. My daughter began identifying things by their Arabic names. A very cute book, too--very well drawn and appealing to children.

This sticker book is comprehensive and fun for all ages (my daughter age 12 - enjoyed it). The book includes a full glossary/dictionary of all the words in the book with a pronunciation guide. All the words include feminine or masculine articles. The stickers help reinforce the learning.

      5 out of 5 stars Incredibly Helpful..........2001-07-26

This book is incredibly helpful from children ages 6 all the way up to adults. You can be in French 1 in high school or AP French in college. No matter which way you go, this book helps you review for all the common French words that no tourist should be without. What's that word for watermelon? How about bathroom? Oh, dang, I forgot how to say tooth! Well, just review the pages of this book and its cute little pictures, and you'll remember in no time. It's also great if you're trying to teach young children their 2nd language, which I recommend, because children learn easier. This book will be fun for them, and for you to brush up on your French!

5 out of 5 stars Still fun after all these months........1999-11-29

My daughter, age 4, has been enjoying this book since we received it eight months ago. Each page introduces a new theme: the kitchen, travel, the park, etc. Large, colorful drawings show how objects are used and relate to one another. Each theme has a variety of smaller pictures and stickers to teach individual words. My daugher often chose to work with the sticker book at reading time, and even though she has completed all the pages, still finds the book fascinating. I can only hope for a "Second Thousand Words in French" as a follow-up.

Written for the artist new to 3ds max, 3ds max 4 in Depth presents the application from the ground up, starting with interface basics and continuing on through project construction to final rendering.

Overall, the book presents much of the same information in the manuals, although it uses more examples and screen shots, and the authors write with a more open voice. The enclosed CD-ROM includes all the project files and source material needed for the exercises in the book, and the color plate gallery offers some inspiring images.

Twenty-one chapters divided into six parts open up 3ds max 4 in Depth in a way that any beginner can understand. "The Big Picture" and "Working in Max" offer overviews of the computer graphics field and how Max works, while "Modeling," "Materials and Textures," "Lights, Camera, Render," and "Animation" offer specific chapters on their respective topics.

A favorite chapter, "Working Smart," closes the second section. It includes information not normally found in books of the genre, such as modeling using instancing and clones, using the Mirror and Snapshot tools, aligning objects, and other tips and tricks for working efficiently. Analyzing scenes and objects using tools like Summary Info, ideal for determining where to trim scenes or alter models, is also covered.

This is a thorough and understandable book, lacking only in-depth information on Max's programming language, MAXScript, which is worthy of a book of its own. For artists new to 3ds max 4, and especially those new to 3ds max, 3ds max 4 in Depth makes a fine handbook and addition to a powerful program. --Mike Caputo

        5 out of 5 stars The book........2005-01-06

3DS Max 4 In Depth is a book that I feel no serious artist working with 3DS Max should have -- even if they are working with a later version. While the tools shown in this book are refined and their locations moved, the descriptions of their use that you find within this book is priceless.

This is not a pleasure book, nor is it a "cookbook". You won't find the magic numbers that will create a low-poly character in here. What you will find is knowledge if you have the patience to read it. When I first learned 3D -- using 3DS Max 4 -- I began with this book, and I simply treated it as a textbook, reading measured amounts of it every day until I was done.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Even if you are an advanced user, it is likely that this book has something to tell you.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful learning aid for beginners.......2002-07-29

I found this book tremendously useful when I first started out using 3ds max. Of course, that was in it's previous max 3 incarnation, but it's usefulness to me has not diminshed. I teach 3d modeling classes at a technical college and I recommend this text to students who are looking for something more extensive then thier provided textbook, 3ds max 4 Fundamental Coursewares. While that book is quite useful in the tutorial respect, this book gives a more textbook reference approach to the subject. The book begins with the basics, things such as primative modeling and transform modifiers and builds from there into polygonal modeling, patch modeling and NURBS. Sections are well planned out and useful to me as a reference and teaching aid. Also, I found the sections about materials and track animation superb. I recommend this book to anyone who is starting in 3ds max or even to those that have used it for a while as a reference.

3 out of 5 stars Hard to follow if your new.......2002-05-17

Im brand new to the 3d world. I had no clue how 3ds max 4 worked at all. I was clueless about what book to buy but for some reason i coose this one. I have only had it for a few weeks but it is so hard to follow its quite frustrating to use. Now it might just be a hard program to use but the book leads you though but you spend a lot of time looking for buttons, finding shapes and not really sure what the book wants you to do after you find it. I dont know if all the books are like this but i sure hope not. I just want to do fun stuff and it doesnt really look like the book even shows you how to. But im just in the begining so i have no ideas. Do you have an idea of a better book that wont take forever to lean? It looks quite exclusive in some of its progrmas. It needs to be shaped for the newbe in the beging of the book. I have spend hours with this book and got no were. You have to much dissifing to do.

5 out of 5 stars Stuff you can use in a way you can understand.......2002-04-06

If you're looking for specific tutorials to get the more out of specific tools in MAX this may not be the book for you. But if you are like me and just entering the 3D graphics field, this book is invaluable. In Depth has goes into the subtle nuance of 3DS MAX that you won't find in other books or tutorials. It explains the means to the end. Rather then teaching a specific goal, it gives you comprehensive knowledge of MAX that you can apply your 3d scenes. You may not end up with a nifty 'hey-look-at-what-can-be-made-in-max' scene, but you'll have an comprhensive understanding of the tools and how to apply it to any scene. Basically you learn what the hell all the features are and how the hell to use them. It gives you an 'in depth' comprehensive knowledge of said features to apply to a broad ranges of situations rather than a way to use whatever tool to apply to a situation you may never even encounter. I think it's my best peice of reference I have on my shelf, but if you already have a fairly good understanding of all the features of 3D with MAX it may not be worth the investment. I can almost gurantee you'll learn SOMETHING you didn't know, but if you're already very experienced it may not be worth the overhead. To sum it up, if you're new to 3D and to MAX this book will teach you all the skills you need to be cool, but people with a fairly extensive knowledge may want to look to more specialized book specific to your needs. However, if you've got the money to spare there's at least something in there for you.
