HEAR IT, LEARN IT, SPEAK IT
What is the Pimsleur® difference?
The Pimsleur Method provides the most effective language-learning program ever developed. The Pimsleur Method gives you quick command of Brazilian Portuguese structure without tedious drills. Learning to speak Brazilian Portuguese can actually be enjoyable and rewarding.
The key reason most people struggle with new languages is that they aren't given proper instruction, only bits and pieces of a language. Other language programs sell only these pieces -- dictionaries; grammar books and instructions; lists of hundreds or thousands words and definitions; audios containing useless drills. They leave it to you to assemble these pieces as you try to speak. Pimsleur enables you to spend your time learning to speak the language rather than just studying its parts.
When you were learning English, could you speak before you knew how to conjugate verbs? Of course you could. That learning process is what Pimsleur replicates. Pimsleur presents the whole language as one integrated piece so you can succeed.
With Pimsleur you get:
- Grammar and vocabulary taught together in everyday conversation,
- Interactive audio-only instruction that teaches spoken language organically,
- The flexibility to learn anytime, anywhere,
- 30-minute lessons designed to optimize the amount of language you can learn in one sitting.
Millions of people have used Pimsleur to gain real conversational skills in new languages quickly and easily, wherever and whenever -- without textbooks, written exercises, or drills.
Conversational Brazilian Portuguese includes the 10 lessons from Pimsleur's Basic Brazilian Portuguese plus an additional 6 lessons.
The 16 lessons in Conversational Brazilian Portuguese are the same first 16 lessons in the Pimsleur Comprehensive Brazilian Portuguese Level 1.
Customer Reviews:
Good all around.......2007-09-24
I thoroughly enjoy this product! I have found that it was exactly what I needed to begin learning Portuguese. I am an auditory learner so this technique worked just well enough that I was able to learn quite a few things so far. If there were one thing I wish this product included it would be a book with all the lessons written out so I could read how I would read the word I'm learning, although it is called conversational Portuguese so I got what I paid for. And it works just fine.
Excellent Introduction.......2007-08-23
The 16 lessons provide an excellent introduction to spoken Brazilian Portuguese. Each 30 minute lesson incorporates critical vocabulary, important grammatical rules as well as ample review material, all presented in a straightforward, lucid manner. The interactive dialog with native speakers conversing at a normal pace builds confidence in speaking and helps develop an ear for the language. This is the best feature of the course. The biggest drawback is the absence of a workbook. I understand the argument that looking at the words can detract from learning the speech, especially in a language like Portuguese with its unusual spellings. But not knowing how the words are spelled leaves a big gap. I highly recommend it as an "introduction", but you'll need to buy something else even just to get a basic overview. I guess that's why the publishers promote their full first level course by giving a discount to purchasers of this program.
EXCELLENT DECISION.......2007-07-06
Very effective method of teaching. I just got it today and can tell right away its going to be great. I went thru the first disc and can already carry on a short Portuguese convo! Your accomplishments will make you smile. Its a bunch of fun also, its not boring. You may want to get a portuguese/english dictionary or phrase book like I did since the lessons are all audio... this way you can see how the words are spelled.
Cramming for Brazil.......2007-05-09
Am going to Brazil to visit friends and wanted to surprise them by knowing some Portuguese. I found the tapes fairly easy, wished they had repeated some of the more difficult wordsa little more. My friends loved my accent, said was very good. I listen in the car and have been doing pretty well. Did buy the Portuguese in 10 minutes a day and found it to be very helpful. You would need to have a cd and a book, is impossible to pronounce without hearing. It gives basic "how to get around" language. Am on cd 10 and am still going. Loved the 30 minute lessons, was just enough at one time.
For the price I think it is a great resource.
Simple, basic, and effective.......2007-05-07
I teach Spanish and I wanted to review my Portuguese. I find this program to be a nice introduction to conversational Portuguese. If you know that you don't have time to learn the basics of the language, and you are more in the survival mode, this program would be a good start. It may be useful even if you are planning to continue on with more advanced study. I recently was asked by a friend to recommend a phrasebook, etc. for Mexico. Had I reviewed the first six lessons of Conversational Brazilian Portuguese as I have now, I would have recommended its counterpart in Spanish to my friend.

Customer Reviews:
This worked well for me.......2005-10-17
I really didn't think it was at all possible to learn a language in such short amount of time, basically while driving around in my car. But I did and I feel that I'm totally ready for my next trip to Brazil. I think this course is perfect for the vacationer that's traveling to Brazil. The 16-lesson series equips you with enough language to be sufficient for a short visit to Brazil. There is no substitute for hearing the corrrect pronounciation of words in the original dialect and that's one of the benefits of the course.
My only issue with this method of learning is that you don't know how the words you're speaking look, which is important, because many of the words look nothing like they sound. I chose to supplement the CDs with a word and phrase book. With my learning from the combination of the two, I'm more than prepared for my next visit to Brazil.
helpful but..........2005-08-03
This language course is very effective. The repetitions make the phrases stick in your head. But, the way the conversation flows makes it most appropriate for an American man trying to pick-up Brazilian women. All of the conversations, (so far) is between the Americano and a Brasileira. A little odd. Otherwise it seems to be pretty effective.
Duplicates material in Pimsleur Quick & Simple Brazilian Portuguese.......2005-06-27
Unfortunately, in the Instant Conversation CD set the Pimsleur company duplicates the material contained in the Quick & Simple CD set. If you already own the Quick & Simple set, it is largely a waste of money to purchase the Instant Conversation set.
This is a good learning tool great for a vacation in Brazil.......2005-04-20
This audio only lanuguage tutorial is highly effective. The course is broken into sixteen 30 minute lessons. Each lesson gets progessivly more advanced moving from learning individual words, to phrases and finally complete sentences. I found the lesson length of 30 minutes ideal for learning on my commute to and from work each day. (It's not a good idea to drive an unfamiliar route while doing this course, you'll miss intersections!!)
In addition to learning and repeating stock phrases you are challenged to put together phrases and sentences from words you have already learnt but in unique combinations not previously tried. This makes you 'think' about what you are going to say rather than repeat by rote. This mirrors what you'll be doing when communicating to someone on your travels. This approach is key to eventually 'thinking' in a foreign language.
The pauses in the audio for you to respond can be rather short for the more unique and thought provoking phrases. As a beginner one still 'translates' before speaking. I'd like to see longer pauses for new material and shorter pauses for material you should know well. Pausing the CD manually is not appropriate while driving or doing some other activity.
This course is a good primer and you will learn just enough to get around as a business visitor or tourist to Brazil. You will learn to count to 79, tell the time, ask basic questions about eating and drinking and locating hotels etc. It will not teach you enough to understand TV or radio or fast conversations. For that you will need to purchase Pimsleurs more extensive language program(s). I wish they had taught one to say 'talk more slowly please' in this course.
This course gets you much further down the road of learning the language than the quick and simple version. I think this one is worth the extra bucks.
I completed the course in about 20 days. At the age of 46 I am somewhat suprised I learnt the language so quickly - I was resigned to the fact that I was probably too old to learn a new language. Someone younger or sharper than I should be able to complete the course in 16 days or less. If I can learn Portuguese from this course so can you!!!
It's a shame that a short phrase book is not included with the program, reading basic words is a requirement when visiting a foreign land. You will need to supplement this course with a phrase book. Note that it's important to complete this course before opening a phrase book. The sounds of the language are so different to what an English speaking person will expect from the written language, looking at the written word too early will encourage you to add a strong accent.
I can thourougly recommend this course to anyone contemplating a trip to Brazil. In addition it's ideal if you are unsure if you want to fork out the money for the full course(s) and want to a trial run with this first. The full course(s) do include sections for reading Portuguese from provided words and phrases.
5 Stars Pimsleur!! It works!!

Customer Reviews:
Great book, but not quite complete.........2005-11-16
Some will find this course a little difficult for those first learning the language. Some of the lessons are outdated, but the saving point in this course is that it still teaches all the main verbs you'll be using and how to use them within a conversion. It teaches all the tenses of the verbs you'll be using, but I would recommend getting a good grammar book to go with this. It's difficult to find the grammar reference you need in the back of the book and it is sometimes too brief to be of much help. The 501 Portuguese Verbs book is also nice to have with conjugations in all the tenses. This course makes for a good foundation for learning the language, but I have finished the book over the course of a year, and it would still be difficult to get by in Brazil. After finishing the book, you'll still need to expand your vocabulary quite a bit.
Also of note, there is a corrections and changes booklet about 6 pages long that does not come with this book. It includes updates for words that are no longer used the way they are in the book along with many corrections. This booklet is included with the complete Cortina package sold with the audio cd's from their website. I would suggest you contact Cortina for a copy of these corrections if you are purchasing only the book from Amazon. Besides.. you wouldn't want to ask how many cruzeiros something is when the currency is now reais.
Good Refresher.......2003-11-24
The reviews of this book on this site are very mixed. That's probably because the book assumes some context. If you already know Portuguese but have gotten rusty, this IS a good book. It focuses on your most likely scenario: casual conversation. It makes it especially easy to shore up verb tenses (my problema). However, it doesn't convey pronunciation. To supplement this book, try to locate a local Brazilian group (start with a university's language department) and meet new people in the process. Or watch a Brazilian film and try not to peek at the subtitles. Another fun approach for conversational Portuguese is to pick up a Brazilian novela (although you'll also need a dictionary for this).
Ridiculously out of date, not how Brazilians speak today........2003-09-10
Page 115 tell us the capital is Rio de Janeiro. Hello! Brasilia has been the capital since 1960!
If it was only that the book spends too much print teaching us how to ask the barber for a shave, or looking for a milliner to make me a new hat, I wouldn't be too upset, but the grammer and pronunciation the book is NOT Brazilian.
My wife, born, raised and educated in Sao Paulo, has forbidden me to use the book. There are too many things (placement of objects, the selection of second person pronouns, pronunication and more) that she had to un-teach me after I studied the book.
Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere.
SE VOCE FALA PORTUGUES.......2001-10-21
Although the instructions are devoted to a more relaxed form of Portuguese language, it may work well in Portugal where Portuguese is carried in a more formal environment. Due to several factors involving regional, social economical factors Brazilian have a tendency of degrading their language, making learning by experience more difficult than would be without any obstacle. In theory this book is very realistic, As far as grammar it is the closest to the real thing I have ever seen in any other book, keeping in mind that the author will not deviate from the correct grammar to give you a first hand experience of the reality you will face asking for directions. Anyone trying to communicate in Portuguese with Brazilians will notice that the author does not include a bad habit developed by Brazialians which is to minimize their words ex: esta approximadamente perto da banca de revista, when talking to an average person, it would be said: esta bem "pertinho" da baca de revista. pertinho = perto. Any word carrying "inho" "inha" just replace "inho" for "o" or 'A" and you find it in the dictionary...did not see this explanation in this book, but I was not too thorough, who said that learning another language would be easy?
Way To Brush Up On Your Portuguese.......2001-01-01
Just like other books in its' catalogue, Cortina's "Conversational Brazilian-Portuguese" is a good way to brush up on your language skills. Whether studying the language or brushing up on it before a trip, this book is a compact lesson made easy by the use of dialogue, illustrations, and exercises.
While there are better books to learn Portuguese out there (specifically the "Teach Yourself!" series), "Conversational Brazilian-Portuguese" is a good book to have around if you want to accelerate your language-learning skills. While not a great book, it is a good source of reference for those wanting to brush up on their Portuguese.

Product Description
Pimsleur has been a recognized name in language training for decades, and updated Audiofy audiobook chip editions pack the eight cassettes or CDs of an introductory Pimsleur Conversational course onto a tiny memory card that's affordable, durable and portable. Each Audiofy audiobook chip, hardly larger than a stamp, holds an unabridged Conversational course with eight hours of digital audio, and saves the last listening position automatically (unlike CDs).
Created for adult learners, this Pimsleur Conversational Brazilian Portuguese edition offers 16 half-hour lessons, providing "meet and greet" language skills to enrich upcoming travel, begin adjusting as a new arrival, or surprise and bond a bit more closely with foreign-born relatives and acquaintances. Lessons emphasize good pronunciation and courteous interaction with native speakers.
In addition, original purchasers of this title qualify for a $50 rebate toward the expanded 30-lesson Comprehensive Level I edition purchased directly from Audiofy. Note: Purchase of the Conversational edition alone does not qualify for any rebate.
This Audiofy audiobook chip edition can be played on Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh desktop computers or laptops (Microsoft Windows XP/2000/Me/98, or Apple Mac OS X 10.3.9 and above) using an SD memory card slot or adapter, like those for digital cameras. Audiobook chips also move seamlessly to most Palm OS and Pocket PC handheld PDAs with SD expansion slots, as well as Treo and Windows Mobile "smartphones" (Palm OS 5.2 or Windows Mobile 2002 and above).
Audiofy audiobook chips offer "no look" audio navigation, ideal for anyone hindered by the small displays on some devices. Book Description
Whether playing at defending their own castle or simply chucking pumpkins over a fence, wannabe marauders and tinkerers will become fast acquainted with Ludgar, the War Wolf, Ill Neighbor, Cabulus, and the Wild Donkey—ancient artillery devices known commonly as catapults. Building these simple yet sophisticated machines introduces fundamentals of math and physics using levers, force, torsion, tension, and traction. Instructions and diagrams illustrate how to build seven authentic working model catapults, including an early Greek ballista, a Roman onager, and the apex of catapult technology, the English trebuchet. Additional projects include learning how to lash and make rope and how to construct and use a hand sling and a staff sling. The colorful history of siege warfare is explored through the stories of Alexander the Great and his battle of Tyre; Saladin, Richard the Lionheart, and the Third Crusade; pirate-turned-soldier John Crabbe and his ship-mounted catapults; and Edward I of England and his battle against the Scots at Stirling Castle.
Customer Reviews:
Way too simple, but OK for kids.......2007-06-29
I find this book to be very superficial when it comes to the real deal. If you're looking for a book on catapults, you're going to get disappointed. This book focuses om making simple small scale models of catapults. I suppose it's great for a weekend project with your wannabe engineer kids, but if you're really interested in pre gunpowder siege warfare, you should rather take a look at Konstantin Nossov's book on siege warfare, which is a really thourough work. Also note that there aren't any metric units for the models, which complicates construction for the common european.
Definitely not worth the money........2007-04-17
I was really dissappointed with this book. Several of the projects are ridiculous, and he didn't do enough research. A few quick searches of the internet reveal that he gets a lot of historical facts wrong.
His first two projects, have nothing to do with anything related to actual catapults. The first is two sticks tied together, and the second is the equivalent of a waterbaloon slingshot. He calls it the "Viking Catapult". Of the ten projects in this book, three of them are modeled on actual historical types of catapults. Two are sub projects, that just show you how to build parts of the catapults, and the other five are things a child could design on thier own. As the one of the other reviewers pointed out, the last project is a plastic spoon catapult game. Small children do this on their own.
Do your self a favor, and download some free plans off the internet.
Perhaps he should name it....Catapults for Kids........2007-01-10
I was disappointed in this book. I was expecting some historically accurate designs and what I received was overly simplified plans presumably designed mostly for children. Yes, most of the text is related to the history of these weapons, but the plans left something to be desired. The ballista plan suggests use of a peanut as ammunition (not a bolt?) and the catch mechanism is nonexistent. The last project is a plastic-spoon-based basketball game. Enough said?
More fun!.......2006-11-10
This is a great book - got a copy for my brother for Christmas, and after taking a look had to get my own copy. I've been wanting to build a trebuchet ever since I saw one as a teenager - here are the plans!
Amusing catapults, interesting history, but no metric units.......2005-07-20
This book contains easy-to-follow instructions on how to build different catapults. Unfortunately there is no data regarding approx. distance and height for the suggested projectiles, why you must try for yourself. All units are english/american, which means you must translate this to metric units if you are more used to that.
A lot of historic background around catapults in general and around each model is given, which makes the book very interesting to read, even if you do not plan to build any of the models.
I can recommend this book to both historically interrested people and those who are more fond of making amusing toys!

Book Description
The 2-volume handbook is dedicated to one of the most significant processes in the history of ancient Greece - colonisation. Greeks set up colonies and other settlements in new environments, establishing themselves in lands stretching from the Iberian Peninsula in the west to North Africa in the south and the Black Sea in the north east. In this colonial world Greek and local structures met, influenced and enriched each other. The handbook brings together historians and archaeologists, all world experts, to present the latest ideas and evidence. The principal aim is to present and update the general picture of this phenomenon, showing its importance in the history of the whole ancient world, including the Near East. The work is dedicated to Prof. A.J. Graham.
This first volume gives a lengthy introduction to the problem, including methodological and theoretical issues. The chapters cover Mycenaean expansion, Phoenician and Phocaean colonisation, Greeks in the western Mediterranean, Syria, Egypt and southern Anatolia, etc. The volume is richly illustrated.

Book Description
The neokoroi, or 'temple-wardens,' were Hellenized cities of the eastern Roman empire who received that title for possessing their provinces' temples to the living emperor. This work collects and analyzes all the evidence for the neokoroi, including their coins and inscriptions, contemporary and subsequent historical texts, and the archaeological remains of the temples themselves and the statues that stood within them. There were at least thirty-seven neokoroi, and each is examined in a separate chapter. The results are then re-analyzed chronologically, clarifying the development of the institution. Finally the statues, temples, cities, and provinces are compared, resulting in new insights into the rivalry and hierarchy among the cities, and the dialogue of worship that related them to their Roman overlords.

Book Description
Ways into the Logic of Alexander of Aphrodisias is intended to give an overview of the logic of Alexander of Aphrodisias (fl. early 3rd century A.D.). Since much of what might be called Alexander's logic is simply Aristotelian logic, instead of engaging in point-by-point analysis, it takes up three themes, one from each of the main areas of traditional logic: the assertoric syllogistic, the modal syllogistic, and the area of metalogical concerns. It provides insight not only into Aristotle's logical writings themselves but also into the tradition of scholarship which they spawned: the ideas and analyses of such figures as Theophrastus of Eresus, John Philoponus and (more recently) Jan Lukasiewicz.

Book Description
The grandeur of an ancient culture comes magnificently to life in this scrupulously researched book. Paper doll fans can dress 2 figures (male and female) in 16 elaborately embroidered and artfully draped costumes from major historical periods: Archaic (c. 750–500 BC), Classical (c. 500–232 BC), and Hellenistic (323–30 BC).
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Illustrations.......2000-02-17
This is a well done book which shows illustrations of typical clothing of the ancient Greeks throughout several historical periods. The drawings are clear and accurate as are all of Tom Tierney's similar works. This was an invaluable aid to designing an historically accurate costume for my 6th grader's "Greek Festival".
Book Description
For over 150 years considered among the finest, most accurate, most useful renderings of authentic costumes from these early civilizations. Carefully copied from ancient vases and statuary, these engravings combine unusual clarity of style with unquestioned authenticity. Over 700 illustrations depict all classes and occupations.
Customer Reviews:
Great for costume references!.......2007-03-12
This book is great, we are using it to correctly dress some of our program participants for a function wehave coming up.
Aysegul Gungor.......2007-01-12
This is a very useful book for Art and Design classes. I used it in my design homework and my teacher really liked my new design which I was impressed by the Greek costumes in this book. Aysegul (12 years)
not bad but could be better.......2006-11-10
The language is a bit weird, like that of the 18th or 19th century European travellers. The information is sufficient but is not as academic as one would expect, if you are looking for a scholarly source.
However, the visual part (pictures, figures) is very extensive and helpful.
Quality for a low price!.......2001-06-28
This is one of the best books on the subject. Every costume, theatrical and visual artist will find this book to be an excellent resource of the period. The illustrations are clear, and beautifully rendered.
Excellent resource for teachers of classics and history.......2000-07-19
The book contains a huge variety of classical drawings which teachers and students can use for fun and enlightenment. Any of the illustrations can be copied on reports, projects, tests or quizzes. They can be enlarged too. You can get a great deal of use from this inexpensive treasure.
