I have studied a lot of languages, and so I've bought a lot of dictionaries. This is by far the best one I have ever used. It goes way beyond the basics, has plenty of idiom, and even archaic words/phrases, all of which is great for the beginner/intermediate student and essential to advanced ones. If you buy this dictionary, you won't need any others. It's worth the price.

GOOD OLD WINE: BUT LACK OF UPDATE SINCE 1978 IS WORRISOME........2003-03-22

In taking care of daily conversational idioms and phrases, this "Cassell's German Dictionary" did not forget technical and professional terms. It is complete in every sense a dictionary in its class should be. Invaluable pronounciation guides featured in both English and German: thus making it a suitable learning tool for either an English native or a German one.
What makes this lexicon so endearing is the way it simplified all those complex verbs, which are notorious barriers for anyone learning German grammar. Also, with over 1,430 pages, the listed price of this dictionary is very reasonable.
However, potential buyers may be greatly discouraged by the fact that this dictionary has not been updated since 1978. Except for antique-geeks, nobody would fancy buying a dictionary that is older than him or her.

Throw the others out..........2002-09-17

I'm currently taking a Survey of Theological German course at a small, liberal arts college. I fought with smaller dictionaries for weeks, but could never find the words I needed. After consulting with the Professor, he told me to throw the others out, and go buy a Cassell's. This dictionary is absolutely indisposable -- it provides me with the old meanings I need for this class (and can't find anywhere else!), but proves equally useful with modern idioms.

The best reader's German-English dictionary.......2001-04-04

I'm very sorry to see a couple previous reviews that seemed to expect more of a conversational or technical dictionary. Cassell's is unquestionably the best for reading essays, stories, novels and poetry (until you have enough knowledge to need only occasional reference to an all-German dictionary like Wahrig's for the occasional mysterious word). There is a British bias, mostly in the English-to-German part, but it seems quite modest. I've used my copy (of a previous edition) for more than 30 years. This is an essential tool for any English speaker studying German in school, college, or independently. I'd rate it at least one "star" better than comparable Langenscheidt or Oxford/Duden products.

OK but a poor quality printing that is physically hard to read.......2006-11-04

I bought the Kassell's based on the recommendation of my teacher, but I don't like it. I am a language student learning German professionally for 20 hours/week. This dictionary has only 35,000 words and is printed horribly. The newstype is smudged and printed on low-quality newsprint. I find this book physically frustrating to read and discern what it trying to tell me.

Buy Webster's New World German Dictionary instead. It is gorgeous, organized better, and printed with crisp black type on bright white paper. It has over 100,000 words and it much better for daily use. I love that one.

There are over 35,000 entries. That is just the right amount for a portable dictionary. This was originally used for a German class. Now I use it to interpret German subtitles in silent movies. There is a table in the back of "German Irregular verbs" and another for "English irregular verbs."

Too bad the Cassell's Contemporary Italian/French/Spanish/German series are now out of print. I have them all the they are the best grammar books I own. I am a language buff and own several grammars and these can't be beat! I had been looking for the Cassell's Contemporary Italian recently and discovered the Langenscheidt Pocket Grammars are the Cassell's Contemporary series in new editions.

A most helpful handbook.......2000-01-25

I purchased this book while studying German at a local university. It was a real help to me. What the text book does not cover, this handbook does. If you are serious about studying German, then you need this handbook.

Indispensible!.......2000-03-01

This conveniently small (portable!) book has words and idioms arranged in standard dictionary format (for idioms this means organized by key words). Example sentences make usage very clear. I only have one complaint: idioms are not identified regionally. At any rate this book would serve admirably as an aid to translation or understanding. After the dictionary proper there are several smaller sections of words grouped by theme and translated in both directions: English false friends (extensive!), journalese, telephoning, food and dishes, travelling, motoring/technical auto terms, animal comparisons and analogies, AND a small section of English idioms. This little book is incredibly helpful and you won't need another one like it.

This handy edition of Cassell's German Dictionary is just that: a handy edition. And although it contains many idiomatic phrases and other helpful tools, it is not designed for those who wish to do scholarly research in German literature. The text does not contain enough technical terms or theological idioms to facilitate this type of research. For those who intend to use it for more casual study, this text would be highly recommended.

Aside from Wahrig's German-German dictionary, you will be *extremely* hard-pressed to find a better German dictionary.

Easy to follow... good examples... idomatic expressions... proper translations that show correct modern usage/interpretations... includes some words in dialect...

I've been a constant student of the language for over 10 years now and this is by far *the* best dictionary to have. No collection of German reference books is complete without this dictionary. My father (Ph.D., German Literature, Univ. Tennessee '77) has used his for over 30 years (with the exception of the 5 years I had stolen it from him while I was in college).

Hands down, the best.

Filthy Rich Clients.......2007-10-05

This very practical book is full of usefull tips to create your own filthy rich client. Definately worth reading!

A fun and useful Java book.......2007-08-22

This is one of those "fun books" on Java that you used to see so much of in the 90's but are pretty much no longer written. This book is about building better desktop applications that employ interesting graphical and animated effects. This book was meant to be worked through from beginning to end, although if you are already familiar with the technology that does not mean you can't skip around. The book has plenty of code and some math. However, as in the example in the section on morphing, the book does not try to get into heavy-duty math. If there are open source libraries that do the trick, as there are in the case of morphing effects, the authors refer you to that library. They do explain math if all it involves is something on the level of fairly simple matrix algebra - blurring for example. The book is not a primer on Swing. It assumes the reader has experience in that area. However, some of the touchier aspects of Swing that may not be self-evident to even experienced Swing programmers are explained in the first couple of chapters of the book. In particular, the authors do a pretty good job of explaining how Swing and Java 2D work together, which is hard to find in books and even in online tutorials. Obviously, there is lots of code involved in such a book, and although there are snippets in the book to the point that you can understand what's going on, you'll want to go to the book's website at O'Reilly & Associates and download the whole thing so you can study it and play with it. The book is divided into four parts as follows:

Not a fundamental tutorial on building GUI's in Java, it points out the stuff you need to get up to speed with the APIs and techniques that later parts of the book build upon.

This is a wonderful collection of poems and short stories; a truly beautiful book. The works are thought-provoking and sometimes disturbing, and always handled deftly. Ms. Addison is a very fine writer, and Animated Objects belongs in the collections of dark fantasy readers everywhere.

A true flight of fantasy! Abandon logic when you open this book and just 'let it flow.' You'll love it's creativity. Follow the progression in the illustrations too.

An extra plus is the authoress' personal journal; this should be a requirement in all books.
