Non Fiction.......2007-09-03
Berlitz Danish-English Pocket Dictionary by the Berlitz Publishing Company is a handy little reference guide when you need to look up a word in Danish and find its English equivalent, and it is not obvious at a glance on the internet. Occasionally useful for checking out a book title on Librarythign too, for combining.
Anyway, not too bad.
Best thing to have in your pocket in Copenhagen (besides a condom).......2007-01-13
Hey, I am out and proud AND this dictionary got me through the day quite well!
It helped me land a Job and a possible husband!!!!
quite good for beginners.......2006-02-28
This book is quite good for beginners, but not so good for scholars. It is good that it at least indicates pronunciation, in contrast to some Danish dictionaries, but the indication of pronunciation of Danish words is not so good as for English words, for example it does not indicate presence of the glottal stop. The dictionary claims to indicate only irregular plurals, which seems to mean change of vowel or doubling of consonants, but some Danish nouns have plurals in -e, others in -er, and this dictionary does not show which plural is used, whether -e or -er.
The grammar section is too brief, it does not indicate for example how regular verbs are conjugated. But it has a good table of irregular verbs.
IPA (Not) For Dummies.......2004-12-12
As other reviewers have pointed out, this little book doesn't have much competition. This is a reasonably useful little dictionary, and is worth its retail price.
Complaint: The English-Danish section gives the reader a pronunciation guide using the IPA. Thus, a Danish speaker has a reasonable idea of exactly how to pronounce the English words. The Danish-English section gives the reader what purports to be a "phonetic transcription," but instead of using the clear and unambiguous IPA, the editors have chosen to saddle the English speaker with a silly, dumbed-down homebrew of an approximate guide to pronunciation. This is NOT a "phonetic transcription," this is a rough guide. Danish orthography, like English orthography, can be tricky and misleading sometimes. Apparently, the editors feel that the big, scary IPA is too much for us anglophones to wrap our pretty little heads around, and that we'll be happy with only a vague idea how to pronounce those dreadful Danish words. "Overraskelse" (surprise)? Just say "o(oo)-o-rahss-gerl-ser." I suppose that's close enough to make me understood, but a "phonetic transcription?" Nope.
Still, this dictionary is better than no dictionary at all, and serves its purpose well enough. The fact that the IPA is OK for Danes but not for anglophones is insulting and annoying, but (oh, well) this is a Berlitz product, after all.
cute little dictionary, but only for beginners.......2003-04-06
Good things about this dictionary: Pocket-sized, great for travel. Quick lookup, because just gives you the basic definitions you would need as a BEGINNER.
Bad things: Couldn't find a few words I needed (such as "boyfriend" and more slang-ish types of words). Only gives one or two possible translations for words that would have at least 10 definitions in an English dictionary. (Example: for the word "miss" they give you only two translations, for using with e.g. "Miss Andersen" and "I miss you," but not for "I missed the bus" etc.)
Get this dictionary only if you're a complete beginner, in which case it'll be very handy.

Good phrase book to get by........2005-03-29
This is a handy pocket sized phrase book that is very handy to communicate the very basics. If you want to get in depth with the language this is not for you. If you want to learn a few basic phrases then this is for you. Many people spoke my native language in Scandinavia which made it easier to get by with the many interactions I dealt with but it was fun to make attempts at learning some of the languages. Have a go at it. Fun Stuff!

Customer Reviews:
Good advice, well organized.......2007-05-03
I was very impressed with this book. The side tabs make it easy to go directly to the section you want. Advice was excellent and well presented.
Extraordinary watercolor, great teacher.......2007-01-03
A beautifully printed hard cover book by an extraordinary watercolor artist. The book is filled with outstanding examples of landscapes, cityscapes from all over the world. In addition to being an inspired World class watercolor artist, Robert Wade is also a great teacher, the book is filled with practical advise and hands on lessons on color mixing, painting people, skies, glazing, location painting and many other subjects.Just to be able to look at his outstanding paintings would easily justify buying this book.
Understanding Watercolor.......2006-11-04
Excellent handbook for the serious watercolorist. Robert Wade has a great approach to some of the more difficult aspects of painting with watercolor. He is brief, to the point, yet his explanations make sense! Enjoyable reading and a great reference tool.
I wish I discovered this earlier!.......2006-08-13
What a wonderful book with terrific instructions and insights. Replaces 20 books in my collection which don't come close to the wisdom this book provides.
My favorite watercolor book.......2006-06-25
I have a library of over 60 watercolor books, and this is by far my favorite. I also own all of Wades's tapes, and his new CD. I find them to be an extension of the book. I took a workshop from a famous watercolor teacher who had us doing wash on top of wash. She must have gotten the idea from Wade as he has a section on just that topic. He covers washes on top of finished paintings that changes the character of the painting completely. A fasinating book that I return to over and over again.
Book Description
This enjoyable guide takes the fear out of "letting loose" and exploiting the flow of watercolor, empowering artists to trust their instincts and create glazes, rich in depth and luminosity. Step-by-step, artists are led through the process of planning, preparing and applying glazes, covering composition, exaggeration, elimination, repition and contrast. Also inside are 30 methods for producing watercolor images, 3 basic steps to developing a painting and 5 complete demos.
These new techniques will not only improve each artist's ability, they will also make the act of painting a more fulfilling and liberating experience.
Customer Reviews:
Pretty good.......2003-09-07
I wish there were even more step by step pictures in here but overall I really like this book. It describes a technique then gives a picture or two to show it. I like a lot some of the newer ideas like using salt and cornstarch to create effects. It talks about softening edges, using glazes, etc. Definitely good for a beginner or intermediate level. I actually use this book in combination with other things like rubber stamping to make my cards more interesting.
More than I expected.......2003-07-10
I was very pleasantly surprised when I got this book.
I was just anticipating lessons on the technique of pouring paint. Yet there was much more.
From brushes to paper to different techniques on how to apply
watercolor,I was definately not dissapointed.
It is very easy to follow.
A good book for any watercolorist to have in their collection.
Watercolor: Pour It On!.......2002-01-16
I am truly excited about the book, Watercolor: Pour It On! As an intermediate-level artist, I feel I have some competency with the basic watercolor skills. I am looking for ways to broaden my scope of techniques, and this book has been a treasure chest for me. It is loaded with step-by-step directions and easy-to-follow sequential photographs.
I find Jan Fabian Wallake's paintings awe-inspiring. I just want to "be there" in looking at each one of them.
The "Thirty Exciting Techniques" ARE exciting and they work! They are fun and easy and they have added new dimensions to my paintings.
I am really impressed with the section on glazing. It is a dynamic technique which has allowed me to move toward a more advanced level of painting.
This is also a visually beautiful book. In addition to the impressive paintings, the graphic layout is enhanced by the use of color, which highlights important information.
I highly recommend this book. It is an inspiration every time I pick it up.
Excellent for creative techniques, but not all I hoped for.......2001-12-28
Here's what I like about "Pour it On"
1. Some creative techniques are given, with complete instructions, like fabric dye, spraying, foam stamping and cornstarch patterns.
2. There's a good section on framing and how to choose the right frame.
3. There's a section on negative spaces (the areas where the drawing "isn't") that helps in composition.
4. There's quite a bit of demonstrations sets of photos from start to finish.
What didn't I like? I found most of the paintings uninspiring. I didn't like the color palettes used, either.
In summary, if you haven't tried some of the more creative watercolor techniques before, this is a great guide. If you are looking for inspiration USING these techniques, I prefer some other similar books by different authors.
Loose, free watercolors!.......2001-11-17
I have been painting with watercolors for a few years and my biggest problem is a fear of "messing up" so I tend to be very controlled. I need to loosen up and enjoy this medium. This book is just what I needed. It beautifully illustrates how to paint with a glazing technique that has gotten me excited about watercolors again. By pouring paint onto wet paper, the author shows how to produce brilliant, clean colors. My paintings usually turn out pale, but now I know how to use this poured glazing technique to get livlier color.
I especially liked the section that shows how to create thirty special textural techniques. There are easy to follow demonstrations and I liked the "helpful hints" that are offered in addition to the written explainations. After reading this book, I remember why I love watercolor so much.
Customer Reviews:
Very good.......2007-03-09
This book has been taken out of the Library several times since I purchased it for our collection in Jan. My hobby is painting, and I thought the directions and examples were well written and illustrated. A very good book for the beginner to intermediate watercolor enthusiast.
Great inspiration!.......2007-01-06
Photos are wonderful, the demos really help one to see how to get from your photo to a painting - to see from both the photographer's eye and the painter's eye. For those of you that sometimes get stuck in the detail of the photo and want to loosen up - this is a very helpful demonstration. A wonderful kickstart if you're having a "block" too - you do WANT to paint from these photos! Happy Painting!
Rating On Paint Watercolor Landscapes from Photos.......2006-08-30
I really should ask for my money back on this book....it was poorly written, vague in description, the cover is great and appears appealing....this is not worth the price of admission.
Sorry.!!

Special tips are also provided on how to capture light and shadow and how to create an overall harmony within a piece.
Customer Reviews:
Watercolour flowers.......2007-10-19
This book has the most beautiful pencil drawings that compliment or preceed the vibrancy of the paintings. The compositional elements are excellent and the book covers a range of flowers that jump out of the page because of the background techniques. Thanks.
Watercolor techniques for floral subjects.......2007-09-29
If you like painting floral subjects, Janet Whittle's method may be of interest to you.
Starting with masked subject areas and dropping in pure colors, Whittle creates a lively, mottled background and then goes on to paint negative spaces around leaves and background flowers. This gives the effect of distant leaves and petals in shadow. Then the main flowers are painted in, dropping colors into the center, shadowing petals and adding detail to stamens, pistils and other structures.
The good thing about this technique is it makes effective bouquet subjects. The bad thing is that the technique leads to somewhat of a sameness to every painting. In this book, the author adds vases, pots and other subjects to the still life, which helps. If you have this book, you probably don't need any of the others as this one is more comprehensive. I don't feel inspired to copy this technique, but there are worthwhile tips to absorb in handling iris especially.

A Good How-To Book.......2006-07-08
This is a good how-to-paint watercolors book. Of course, there are hundreds on the market, but this one is quite helpful. Basically, he teaches you how to paint watercolors like the one on the cover, but if you want to learn this style, this book is a big help. DiStefano's watercolors, I think, are very nice, and you get a lot of them in this volume. There are many step-by-step paintings that are well presented. He paints with nine colors and gets amazing results with his spontaneous style.
