    Book Description

WHO ARE YOU? (Note: It's not a dumb question!)

You think you know the answer - you know your name, gender, occupation, age, personal resume, etc. But those are just outer identities that don't define the person you feel yourself to be, your needs and dreams, and who you can become if your potentials are fully realized.

    YOUR BIRTHCHART HAS THE ANSWER

Your birthchart is a guide to self-knowledge describing the whole person you are and can be. There's no better roadmap of any kind to the work you yourself must do to fulfill the ancient commandment, know thyself! This is the power in the scientifically calculated birthchart interpreted by objective criteria and subjected to your internal dialogue to map out what you can make of the rest of your life.

This book tells you how, and the included a CD-ROM (PC) does all the work for you (and for anyone else), prints out a specific interpretative report for you to study, apply to your current situation and relate to your goals & desires. It's a process that activates your inner power to become all you can be.

5 out of 5 stars Mapping Your Birthchart.......2005-04-14

I found this work easy to use, understand and install
on my computer. This work is an excellent resource for
the beginner or the advanced practitioner of astrology.
I learned things I never knew about my horoscope especially
the sidereal aspect of my sign. I would recommend this book
and CD to anyone interested in casting their birth chart and
it makes an excellent addition to the occult library.

3 out of 5 stars An introductory book.......2003-12-25

Stephanie Clement has practiced astrology for nearly 30 years. She is versed in the domain of transpersonal psychology and its application within an astrological context. Mapping Your Birthchart attempts the challenging task of explaining basic astrological principles for a beginner while also providing personal insight and meaning.

The book begins by covering the basic astrological concepts paramount to anyone exploring astrology for the first time. Chapter one briefly touches on the design of the chart wheel along with the signs, planets, and houses, offering some keywords for reference. Aspects are also introduced with a thoughtful analogy to help define the quality of orbs. Retrogrades are oddly missing, however, and the inclusion of transits seems premature. While well-written explanations can be found throughout the chapter, I would have preferred more care given to this section and its organization as the foundation for an introductory book. A beginner may find themselves temporarily pulled off-track for a paragraph or two before the subject matter returns to the topic at hand. However, as the reader progresses through the book, many lingering questions should be answered.

Clement introduces her readers to the mythological underpinnings of the zodiac. Although the narratives are brief, it is a beneficial addition not often found in beginner books. The majority of Mapping Your Birthchart describes each planet, house and aspect in greater detail, introducing them as a trio in each chapter. This organization is unconventional, but functional. Most chapters contain case studies of well known individuals to assist in clarifying the concepts previously discussed. Exercises in each chapter offer an additional means of practice and integration.

Chapter six, titled "Mercury, the Third and Sixth Houses, and the Trine" is similar to most chapters; Mercury's astrological associations and symbolism is articulated in a warm and casual language, followed by a cookbook description of the planet through each sign. Next, the author expounds on the meaning of each house. Interestingly, a description of masculine and feminine signs is then inserted. In addition, some rudimentary information is provided on planetary rulerships and essential dignities. These pieces would have been more potent had they been woven into the first chapter on basic astrological definitions and concepts. Although they are oddly out of place in the middle of the book, each is an important piece for students to learn. I also wonder about the usefulness of essential dignities and debilities, generally a more classical application, in the context of a modern-based book; especially since the author does not appear to explain or use these considerations in the multitude of case studies presented.

As an introductory book, Mapping Your Birthchart contains the major points necessary for a new student to begin their study of the topic, despite its occasional disorganization. In addition, a glossary and appendix of astronomical data is included that any serious student should not be without. The CD included with the book is an added bonus for those who want to print a birth chart and don't have access to the internet.

    1 out of 5 stars Unremarkable.......2003-11-06

The book is fine, the writing rather unappealing, and the CD doesn't add much. There are plenty of websites that you can get the same information for free.

Mapping Your Birthchart: Understanding Your Needs and Potential.
    Stephanie Jean Clement, Ph.D.
    Llewellyn Publications, 2003. 228pp.

The birthchart is like a map that when understood can explain much about someone's personality . If you don't know how to read a chart it can seem like a foreign language jumbled in a circle. The book Mapping Your Birthchart by Stephanie Jean Clement, Ph.D. teaches how to interpret a chart. It includes an array of good information about astrology. There are only a few concepts that weren't explained as thoroughly as they could have been.

In comparison to many of the astrology books on the market, Clement uncovered more astrology concepts than the usual sign and planet correlation found in most astrology books I've read. It describes concepts such as houses, transits, and aspects, as well as how to find them in a chart. There are also sample charts included to aid in teaching as well as exercises for practice at the end of each chapter, as would be seen in a textbook.

In reading this book I found some of the writing to be a bit mystifying. Some of the concepts weren't presented in a way that could be comprehended by everyone. She jumped from one concept to the next before really explaining very thoroughly what the first one was all about. Which left me with little information and not as familiarized with the topic as I would like. There was more of an overview of difficult topics such as transits and aspects rather than a fully developed explanation.

The book was very thorough in teaching how to read a birthchart. It included explanations for the symbols found in the chart as well as the meanings behind planet and sign correlations. Included was also full paragraphs giving insight to key personality traits according to the reading of your chart.

After reading this book I am now able to look at a birthchart and see many key factors about a person rather than a jumbled mess of symbols. Her goal in teaching people how to read a birthchart was definitely accomplished. I would definitely recommend this book to those that look at a birthchart with perplexity.

This book and CD-ROM has totally helped me to understand both the rather complicated Astrological reports and the planetary associations within each house. The CD-ROM is user friendly and also quite excellent. (The information on your Natal Chart is mirrored within the book.....but they are both of equal value in effectiveness and efficiency!) Highly recommended for the newbie or for getting to know your friends and family better! Excellent.....buy this book!

5 out of 5 stars This is a hidden gem!.......2006-09-18

This book is wonderful. It isn't a "how to " book, but exaplins many topics of the metaphysical that relate to intuition, precognition, telepathy and the like. It is a book packed with information. The author quotes Edgar Cayce many times in this book, and the wisdom of Casey for practical metaphysical knowledge is extremely valuable.
If you are a person who wants to know the origin of those "messages" that you get sometimes, buy this book. If you do not know much about the psychic world, what it can and cannot do, buy this book. If you want a general overview of the abilities we all have, and even a skeptical view of some instances, buy this book. This book is worth its' weight in gold to the beginning student of the metaphysical, and even to those who have some study already under their belts.
This is not a one sided book, it tells how certain "flashes" can be subconscious knowledge that you learned prior to the "flash". Douglas Richards wrote a balanced and informative book! I use this book in my Intro to Psychic Development class.
It is a definate read for those who want to know...just what is psychic ability and what can it do.
          Enjoy!

As a writer, he had the wisdom in his youth to begin keeping detailed journals of his thoughts and adventures in Tokyo and beyond. Unlike many of my journal entries, Richie's are beautifully written and thoughtful, and the people he met and the insights he provides on Japan make for good reading. Although some of the journal entries are truly gems, others can be dull, if not too personal. It was in search for Richie's telling observations regarding Japan and its people that compelled me to continue reading. I would recommend this book for those who are knowledgeable of Japan, its people, language and history. Without such background, the book would not be as interesting. Overall, though, this is a good book by a man who lived life the way he wanted to and lived to write about it.

I usually start reading diaries with a sense of excitement, an eagerness for revelation, life revealed in the small changes and observations over time. But I am often disappointed. Not with Richie. Detailed, poetic, observant and honest--he makes me laugh and cry. Here is the shape of life--youth, sex, love, change, aging, death--as it is too rarely depicted--full of magic and awe even in the banal. Even if you have no interest in Japan, or in film, you will like this book because of what it shows us about life.

5 out of 5 stars humble and honest obervation of life.......2007-04-07

I have only known Donal Richie as a film scholar having admired his commentaries on Bresson and Ozu DVDs. Naturally, I bacame interested in the man himself who continues to live in Japan. In this journal, he meets such notables as Kawabata, Kurosawa, Takemitsu, but what is more interesting is his interaction and friendship with regular people. Mr. Richie goes to a park in Tokyo (his usual hang out) and talks to a homeless, gives him his hamburger. He also befriends local prostitutes while he is also a guest of honor at emperors's palace. What is unique about this journal is that he tells as it is. Unlike some autobiography, Mr. Richie does not try to convince readers, does not explain, does not try to defend his actions, or does not offer advice. He simply dscribes his observation both his own personal life and what he sees and happens to him living in Japan as it moves from war destruction to economic bubble, and to decay.

5 out of 5 stars Informative, fascinating, and moving.......2006-11-01

Writer Donald Ritchie, an expert on Japanese film and a keen observer of that interesting country, has distilled nearly sixty years of life as an expatriate into these fascinating journals. Ritchie emerges as a deep thinker and lover of high culture who derives equal satisfaction from indulging his "taste for the mud" (it sounds much more poetic in French), which takes him to sex clubs, prostitutes, and other similarly disreputable places for which he holds a healthy admiration. His endless curiosity about matters and people both high and low is a strong point of this book, providing a well-rounded portrait of both a society and a man's life.

I enjoyed seeing Japan through Ritchie's eyes from his first days in the country during the American occupation up through the years of reconstruction, the boom years of the 80s, and the bursting of the bubble. He notes the many changes in the people and is quite honest about his own feelings concerning his privileged position as a foreigner, never fully accepted but also not subject to the same severe social strictures to which Japanese hold each other. Among the many highlights of this fine book are the long train trip across the country that Ritchie takes during the days of the occupation, his friendship with Yukio Mishima as well as many other distinguished people, and his closely observed opinions on the evolution of Japan's stance toward the foreigner. A fine read, particularly recommended to those with an interest in Japan.

Who doesn't love the idea of reading someone's personal journal? When reading "The Japan Journals," it is important to keep in mind that is what you are doing. Although pulled together expertly by editor Leza Lowitz's commentary, choppy moments and wide gaps remain. It is a journal; they work that way. This fact does not, however, reduce the quality or readability of this brilliant title.

Sure, this book can be taken as the history of a changing Japan during an integral fifty years. More, it should be taken as the history of a changing man who happens to live in Japan while history marches on.

Deeply personal and eloquently written, Richie allows the reader to be escorted through his life as an expatriate, journalist, lover, and spectator. A life that includes brushes with fame, travel to wonder-filled locale, and honest observations on a society that was never fully his; he remains an American, despite the semblance of indoctrination. Through his words you will experience the tide of times in a world that has passed into the ether and as the author ends, "... look into the future which is already here."

"The Japan Journals: 1947-2004" is a striking reminder that change is constant and our journey is what we make of it.
