Book Description
The Well-Fed Writer: Back For Seconds (Fanove, October 2004)
In 2000, Atlanta-based freelance commercial writer Peter Bowerman released "The Well-Fed Writer: Financial Self-Sufficiency As a Freelance Writer in Six Months or Less," a detailed how-to for starting, building and managing a lucrative commercial freelancing business: writing for corporations and creative entities and for $50-125+ an hour. The book became an award-winning, triple-book-club selection (Book-of-the-Month, Quality Paperback Book, Writers Digest).
As Corporate America has downsized, it has outsourced much of their creative needs, making this particular writing direction more viable and profitable than ever before. Here's a writing direction with plenty of work, strong demand for good writers, hourly rates of $50-125+ ($60-80 average) and where ALL time is billed. No flat fees with vast, open-ended commitments of time. Translation? Less time working to pay bills and more time pursuing your writing passions.
Perhaps you're a writer - seasoned or aspiring. Or maybe a home-based business-seeker or at-home Mom - looking to leverage past business experience into a lucrative, flexible income. Regardless, if you're looking to turn your love of writing into your living - a GOOD living - this might be the direction for you.
With 95% new content, "TWFW: Back For Seconds" is a companion volume (the other 5% is a 12-page encapsulation of the TWFW) that builds on TWFW with dramatically expanded sections on sales and marketing - demystifying subjects that often terrify creative types. Marketing by phone, fax, e-mail, direct mail, Web sites and networking are all covered.
Drawing from the author's own experiences and dozens of firsthand accounts from commercial writers around the world, the book discusses building the business in small towns or rural areas, on a part-time basis, in unusual niches, along with effective networking strategies and much more.
What's "commercial writing"? Marketing brochures, ad copy, newsletters, direct mail campaigns, speeches, sales sheets, proposals, web content, video/CD-ROM scripting, annual reports, case studies, and so much more.
Why do corporations hire freelancers? For good solid economic and creative reasons. With a freelancer, corporations don't have to pay salary, benefits, and vacation time. But they will pay a freelancer $60-80 (average) for their time. In addition, they pay only what they need when they need it. And with a network of freelancers, they get a broad spectrum of fresh talent (hard to get with in-house staff writers used to writing about the same topics day after day) which they can "form-fit" to their specific writing needs.
Veteran commercial freelancer Bob Bly, known as the freelance writing "guru" for his 50+ writing titles (including the classic, "Secrets of a Freelance Writer" and "The Copywriter's Handbook") says of commercial freelancing: "I know of no other arena of writing so lucrative yet so easy to get started in."
His take on the "The Well-Fed Writer": "This book is the best information on how to make more money with corporate clients I have ever read. It answers everything you want to know. Highly recommended."
His feedback on "Back For Seconds": "When I wrote 'Secrets of a Freelance Writer,' it was the first and only book on making six figures as a commercial freelancer. Of the dozen-plus books written on the subject since then, this book is by far the most comprehensive, useful and valuable."

Picks Up Where TWFW leaves Off.......2007-05-14
Here is another helping of Peter Bowerman's sage advice on becoming a well-fed writer. BACK FOR SECONDS picks up where The Well-Fed Writer leaves off. No, this is not a rehash of the same material. This makes it imperative that you read The Well Fed Writer first.
Not only is this book not a rehash of TWFW, this is not an instruction manual on how to write good copy. There are numerous other books available to that end. What Back For Seconds is, is a roadmap for new, and even established commercial writers, to grow their business.
I would say the main points this book conveys would be two things; cold calling and having a website. Bowerman walks those reluctant to make cold calls, through the process, even providing several call scripts. Other points are studied here, such as newsletters, networking, etc., but cold calling and websites are the meat of the book.
Perhaps the thing I enjoyed most about this book is, Bowerman is not afraid to go beyond the realm of his own expertise to seek the advice of others. This makes for a nice variety of reading content and I guarantee you will pick up many ideas you've overlooked. Throughout the book you will find contributions from copywriters of various levels of success telling how they got where they are.
Throughout the book, you will also find countless resources listed. This is compounded in the appendix. Taking up roughly ¼ of the book, the appendix is an invaluable resource. I'm looking forward to spending a few days just researching these sources. This is another "must read" for anyone in, or contemplating a career in freelance copywriting.
Good Reading- and eating!.......2007-03-27
I have enjoyed this book from cover to cover. As someone who is aspiring to be a well-fed writer I highly recommend this book and the original book. Happy eating!
The Freelance Writer's Bible... Honestly.......2006-09-20
I was so impressed with Peter's first book: Well-Fed Writer, that I wasted no time grabbing up this one. And I was not disappointed.
Bowerman gives true life gems, suggestions to make your freelance business take off, and writes in such a way, you're laughing your way through page after page.
He is a gifted writer, mentor and freelance master. This book is a MUST HAVE for anyone contemplating going into freelance copywriting. If you're already freelancing and haven't been able to quit your day job, this book is just the tool you need.
His advice really does work!
A definite income booster.......2006-09-16
Many talented writers hardly earn any money. If you are willing to put your talents towards business writing, Peter tells you what pays and how to go about getting the work.
Peter unapologetically shows how you can take the talent you have, direct it at a job that you enjoy, and come out ahead. It will take hard work, a will to spend your time on activities that lead to success, and an extremely optimistic attitude that will carry you through the slow days. I do believe though that Peter is onto something here.
I can't imagine trying to break into writing without having any professional experience. However, if you commit to making the effort no matter how much rejection you initially encounter, I think that it is doable.
For those of us already in writing, it's a no-brainer. Go ahead and buy the book. It's worth the price just for the sheer pleasure of sharing Peter's enthusiasm. This one is a keeper.
More useful guidance, same entertaining read.......2006-08-27
Peter offers more useful ideas to new and experienced freelance writers in this second book -- yet in the same breezy writing style that makes it an enjoyable read. Particularly encouraging are the profiles of individual writers in Appendix B.

My 8 month boy loves this book!.......2007-07-04
Teaching children to love books is very important, and this book is a great tool for this. My 8 month old boy loves this book & others in the same collection. He's a very active child, with a short concentration span, but will sit quite still to look at this book, & lets out little squeaks of happiness. He recognizes & opens the little flaps, and even has some favorite flaps, that are get quite worn out. We don't let him watch TV, so the book doesn't have to compete with that. Also I think the book is nicely put together, and the photographs in the compositions are of a superior quality.
Good for a weather unit study.......2007-06-29
This book is a good starting point to teach weather to children, it covers all aspects of weather. It is intended for the elementary level but the great photos make this book appealing to younger kids.

How to get kids to enjoy poetry.......2007-06-03
Douglas Florian creates delightful and clever descriptions not only in words that appeal to all the senses but sometimes in the placement of the words on the page to help illustrate the poems. My daughter and I love this book, our favorite of all Mr. Florian's work.
Ages 4-8? Should be 4 to 80!.......1999-12-08
An excellent collection of poems about winter - the joys and woes. A favorite is the poem by the same title, Winter Eyes. Rich language and stunning imagery in a deceptively simple form. I'm sending it to my mother, who recently left Minnesota for New Mexico, she can always have the best of winter with this book.
Product Description
At 7 a.m. on August 29, Hurricane Katrina made landfall on the Louisiana coast between Grand Isle and the mouth of the Mississippi River as a strong Category 4 hurricane. The devastation she would bring to the Gulf Coast was widespread and unimaginable. Though warnings had been issued for days and evacuations initiated, thousands stood in the path of one of the strongest storms in the history of America. Left with no power, no drinking water, dwindling food supplies, and steadily rising waters from major levee breaches, survivors also faced life-threatening looting and widespread fires. Efforts to limit the flooding were initially unsuccessful and refugees from the hurricane fought for their very survival on the streets of New Orleans and throughout Louisiana and Mississippi. While tragedy and desperation brought out the worst in some, it also inspired courage and hope in others, giving them the will to triumph against incalculable odds. Searching for loved ones and pets, seeking shelter and the basic necessities of life, thousands continued to fight on to simply survive the harshest of conditions and help others do the same. Many of these gripping and heroic moments are captured in KATRINA: Stories of Rescue, Recovery and Rebuilding in the Eye of the Storm, vividly reflected in stories and dramatic four-color photographs from the Associated Press and other wire services. A portion of the proceeds of this book will be donated to the American Red Cross to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina.

My three year old loves the Eye Know series books. I think the format is a little confusing to read, and occasionally I question some of the facts. Overall, though these books are a great way to start kids on science.

Kramer's readable, exciting text allows readers to ride with Faidley in his specially equipped vehicle, Shadow Chaser, as he races to intercept likely tornado or lightning producers." --School Library Journal, starred review
"Kramer's narrative, generously embellished with Faidley's photos, follows this professional storm chaser along his various treks, lucidly explaining both the prevailing weather systems and the photographic challenges presented by each atmospheric phenomenon....Kramer keeps the tone immediate and tense." --The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

A smaller "Strom Chaser".......1998-10-08
This book is a beautiful summery of Faidley's "Storm Chaser" for kids. The photos are simply breadth-taking and incredible. Most kids would be more interested in storm chasing than storms itself, but Faidley will use his wonderful photos to arouse their curiosity about the science behind our violent atmosphere. If the words can't leave them gasping awe, the photographs will.

Dissappointing.......2004-01-06
This book is unusual. It has no clear ending (if you like this read "The If Game") and the blurb rather conflicts with the real message. The message completely overtakes the ending (note how a moral can be properly pulled off: "Power of Three") and I felt as annoyed as when going to see the Evolution film and finding that Head & Shoulders shampoo had completely overtaken the actual film. The back of the book suggests light-hearted reading, lots of happy fantasy etc. (Diane Duane's Young Wizard series style - or, in fact, Harry Potter) But this didn't really come through as the ending was so completely overtaken by the moral. Ray appears for basically no reason at all, and reading about Race's life doesn't really make me very warm-hearted. The book also sometimes moves quickly while at other times having such a slow narrative that I skipped paragraphs.
Help Wanted.......2001-09-03
I'm sure its a good book, but I really can't get past the first page! I think it's so bad or badly written that i am able to get distracted so easily and it the subject really doesnt appeal to me
Excellent, especially the beginning.......1999-10-24
I found out that Weather Eye was a futuristic science fiction set in October 1999, so I thought it would be interesting to read it at the time when it was actually meant to be happening. Actually, it turned out to be a very good story for itself--not only because of why I originally picked it up. It is quick-moving and very readable. The author tends to employ very unusual adjectives and imagery, which is occasionally annoying but often startling and appropriate. By the end the plot does not fulfill all the promise of the beginning and becomes too controlled by the message the author wants to get across (Kids can do it! Everyone work together and let's save the environment!) and the writing gets a little preachy. This is unfortunate but does not spoil a mostly great book. The characters are well-drawn and interesting, and it is refreshing that there are no bad guys or perfect people--they are all human. Overall, a very good book for ages 10-14. Recommended. Actually, I'm a little surprised it isn't more famous than it is.

My first story from Dave Wilson, it won't be the last........2006-10-01
The Mote in Andrea's Eye tells the story of a young girl named Andrea who lives through a terrible storm that leaves her scarred for life. Growing up she dedicates her life to learning everything she can about the weather and hurricanes, her goal is to figure out a way to stop hurricanes completely before they ever make landfall. While working in a government sponsored facility she meets the love of her life Phil Wicks, a pilot whose job it is to fly out and drop silver iodide into the storms. After they're shut down Andrea and Phil set up a storm fighting facility of their own. Everything is going well until the day Phil flies out into a storm and never returns, the kicker is when Phil disappears he takes the storm with him.
This book was born after author David Niall Wilson's wife turned to him and asked the question, "I wonder why no hurricane has ever disappeared into the Bermuda Triangle?" Which IMO is a contender for Best Question Ever.
TMiAE has a TWISTER feel with a little bit of FOREVER YOUNG with the whole thing liberally covered in TWILIGHT ZONE. However, it borrows but never steals. The story stands very firmly on its own two feet and kept me glued to the pages except for when it got too emotional for me and I had to put it down. If you've ever stayed in your house while a hurricane came through your heart will be in your throat for the entire first part of the novel. After you finish the first part you'll feel almost as emotionally drained as though you went through the storm with Andrea and her family.
The writing is very clear; there isn't a lot of extra stuff going on. At times I wanted more back story for the characters just so I could get to know them better but ultimately the more I read the better I liked the clean concise style. The only complaint I had was with the synopsis on the inside cover. It pretty much laid out the whole book so if you want to be unspoiled I wouldn't recommend reading it.
Many genres are covered here including science fiction, fantasy, romance and thriller; there's truly something for everyone. This would make an incredible movie.
A rousing adventure at sea -- with a touch of the Bermuda Triangle.......2006-07-12
I've admired Dave Wilson's fiction, both short and long, for many years, and THE MOTE IN ANDREA'S EYE is another of this prolific author's works well-worth seeking out, even if horror/dark fantasy isn't your cup of tea. While MOTE may be rooted in fantasy, the better part of story is pure action/adventure with a touch of science fiction for accent.
In her youth, protagonist Andrea Jamieson loses her father to a hurricane -- an event that sets the course for the rest of her life. As an adult, she becomes a scientist engaged not just in the study of hurricanes but in a quest to halt them altogether. Aided by her husband, Phil Wicks, and a crew devoted to seeing her dream fulfilled, Andrea concocts a plan that evidence indicates may succeed in actually stopping a force five hurricane.
What no one has counted on is the fact that the storm has originated in the Bermuda Triangle.
Wilson's prose here is less textured than in most of his works; it's so plain, so workmanlike, that at first, I wasn't sure it was going to hold me. In fact, with so little dimension, the characters initially held almost no interest for me, and it was only the leaked promises of fantastic events to follow that kept me engaged. However, once the book kicked into higher gear, some hundred pages in, the characters at last came to life and I found myself in their corner as events become increasingly dire.
Wilson uses science as a sturdy backdrop for the story. At no time are the technical details overwhelming. In fact, as the novel progresses, the little details themselves serve to augment the rising tension. By the climax, not only was I convinced I had ridden out one helluva storm, I had the feeling that I knew quite a bit more about certain meteorological events than I did the day before I started reading.
I don't believe MOTE is as powerful as some of Wilson's darker, more philosophical works, such as THIS IS MY BLOOD, but once it finds its stride, it's a fast-paced, highly enjoyable adventure that's not just for aficionados of the dark.
terrific fantasy romantic mystery .......2006-07-03
It was watching her father die during a hurricane when she was just a child that motivated Andrea Jamieson to become a scientist studying storms. Currently she heads Operation Stormfury studying how to prevent or lessen the impact of oceanic fed storms on land. She works with her lover flier Phil Wicks, a former US Navy pilot. His prime mission is to drop silver iodide on hurricanes.
They are currently tracking a horrific storm over the Devil's Triangle heading towards North Carolina Phil flies towards the torrent, but when he makes his approach to drop the silver iodide, he vanishes along with the storm. Stunned Andrea tries to track what happened to her beloved who simply vanished somewhere apparently into nowhere along with the lost storm at sea or elsewhere.
THE MOTE IN ANDREA'S EYE is a terrific fantasy romantic mystery that grips the readers starting with the action of the storm and never slows down as the audience switches from adrenalin pumping to pondering what is going on with David Niall Wilson's superb thriller. Andrea and Phil is a fine couple, who as partners and as individuals make the plot seem real. Mr. Wilson writes a fantastic thriller that fans of nature out of control tales will want to read and hope Hollywood will film it.
Harriet Klausner
Twister meets the ocean.......2006-06-23
If you are a fan of weather thrillers, this book is for you. Andrea Jamieson loses her father at an early age in a horrible hurricane on the NC coast. She grows into an expert on fighting hurricanes, only to lose her husband -- and her storm -- in the Bermuda Triangle! Fast paced and would make a darned good movie.
