Picture Dictionary.......2007-09-24
I was very pleased with the product, and I was pleased with how quickly I received it.
No pronunciation guide under the pictures.......2007-09-04
Nice idea, but it does only half the work. It shows you how to write the words and sentences, but not how to pronounce them, which is extremely important for ESL students. To see how a word is pronounced, you have to check the index, which works just like a regular, non-picture dictionary.
Excellent for Teaching or Tutoring Multiskill Classes.......2007-05-28
A practical took for tutoring and teaching ESL students of multiple levels. Often, a picture really is worth a thousand words - especially if the student doesn't know a thousand words!
Besides, every single object has a name... and sometimes I can't think of the precise word. This book solves that problem. You ask students to turn to the appropriate page, and at least buy some time. You will almost all find the word and object.
By the way, this book can also be an excellent supplement text for intermediate classes. In a better world of more and smaller ESL classes, you would find this class sets of this textbook in Beginning, High Beginning, Intermediate Low and even Intermediate High classes. Flexible, informative, and practical, the Oxford Picture Dictionary remains a must for ESL programs, instructors, and tutors.
My ESL thinks it's great!.......2005-08-06
I used this with a group of adult students from West Africa. They were the ones who decided to purchase the book out of their own pockets because they found it so helpful. They speak French and very little English. I do not speak French. The book was quite valuable.
Great .......2005-04-25
This is great for English language learners. It's organized by sections and is easy to understand. The only drawback is it's ehtnocentric towards the USA and this wouldnt be good for english learners living in Britain.
Book Description
The New Oxford Picture Dictionary and its components provide a complete, four-skills language development program. The program is: BLPractical - a wide range of topics introduce new words in their most common context. BLEasy to use - vocabulary items are presented without ambiguity or the need for translation. BLVersatile - the Dictionary itself and its components have unlimited applications. BLFlexible - the Dictionary can be used alone or with its components.
Customer Reviews:
Great for ESL or for teens and up learning Spanish.......2006-01-03
I used this for several years in my Adult ESL classes - the words, and matching up the numbers are a little cumbersome for any age younger than junior high, I think. The only drawback is the lack of phonetic spelling - I think we expect it from a dictionary, but most picture dictionaries leave that part out for some reason.
This is not a good book for young children - too many things to look at on one page...EXCELLENT resource for adults and teens, though, who are eager to increase vocabulary and are confident with pronunciation. I use it a lot in my Spanish classes, and even as a reference, when wanting to boost the vocabulary list for the week.
For the younger child learning Spanish, try Flip Flop Spanish, which comes with a CD. Or Al reves ingles - which will be out shortly.
Excellent resource.......2005-06-29
I use this book a lot even for adult ESL students. I find this a great resource for one of the basic ESL techniques--describe the picture. I've also used the verb pages to practice tenses. Pages on prepositions are also very good. The pictures are clear and easy to understand.
Pretty Good.......2004-01-27
I still like the original better, but the New Oxford Picture Dictionary is a good resource and is on my list of recommended visual dictionaries.
The new oxford picture dictionary.......2000-01-09
I have been teaching ESL to Spanish-speaking people for over 6 years and this has been a very useful aid in teaching. Now that I am teaching Spanish to English-speakers it is not as useful as it is when I teach English. Spanish words are not updated and I always have to change at least three words per page.
Great for teaching English!.......1999-08-06
I just returned from Mongolia, where a group was teaching English to the Mongolian children. This was a very valuable tool both for both in-class instruction and indepenent study. The real test is that the New Oxford Picture Dictionary (Monolingual version) was a real hit with the kids!
Book Description
A picture dictionary for young children organized by topic.

Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Perfect for school-aged children.......2005-10-19
I like this book because it is specfically made for school aged children. I am currently tutoring 11 and 13 year old boys, and I was previously using the more detailed Oxford Picture Dictionaries with them, but found this book today at my library. This is the only ESL picture dictionary I have found that specifically focuses on school subject matter. It contains illustrations of school aged children. However, I would like to see verbs commonly used, i.e, read, write, study, add, subtract, etc.
Very Simple and Very Effective.......2005-04-30
The content areas being social studies, history, science, and math. As with the Oxford Basic Picture Dictionary, the design is simple and uncluttered. On the left page are the words, accompanied by individual, small but colorful illustrations. On the right page is a large, full illustration containing all the illustrations from the left page. In other words, the right page is the left page in context. Rather like understanding where the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle go by looking at the box cover. A user friendly and effective strategy.
The Best Oxford Dictionary Ever!.......2003-12-26
Most of the Oxford Picture Dictionaries seem too complicated or too cumbersome to use easily. This dictionary can really help a student trying to do homework in English. It can be a great help in fact.
Book Description
A new edition of this popular topic-based dictionary which focuses on everyday, key vocabulary.

the basic oxford picture dictionary (monolog).......2003-06-03
This book is very deceptive. I wanted to get a book on creole
called "the basic oxford picture dictionary English/creole"
and I ended getting this one instead. the two book have the same cover but they are very diferent. one does not have anything to do with creole but the title start the same and the cover look the same. this can be confusing for first time buyer of such a language book. I know that there are a lot of people out there probably making the same mistake. this should be fixed so one does not blow there hard earn cash on mailing back and forth.
Not Creole.......2003-03-19
Although you could never tell it by reading the other reviews, this book has NOTHING to do with Creole. It is an English picture book - you see a picture of a ladder and it's referenced to the word "ladder". It's a lot of pictures and the English word for each item. Before you buy, look at the cover and excepts - I didn't.
I think what you need is "The Basic Oxford Picture Dictionary (English/Haitian Creole Edition).
Just don't buy this book unless you're trying to teach or learn basic English.

Looking back, I think what I needed was "The Basic Oxford Picture Dictionary (English/Haitian Creole Edition). But the way you're pointed to this English version when you search on "Haiti" is misleading - no, make that incorrect.
Please don't make the same mistake I made and buy this book - that is unless you're trying to teach or learn basic English.
Nice Adjunct to more comprehensive Creole texts.......2001-12-30
Attractive, detailed pictures and clear labeling make this a great- and cheap- adjunct to more comprehensive texts in learning very basic Creole. It is primarily useful in helping you to learn the names of common objects and simple actions. There is no instruction regarding grammar and usage. If you are in a situation in which you need a quick introduction for an upcoming trip to Haiti, I would pair this with the "Survival Haitian" booklet and cassette available from the Kansas University bookstore website. If you are in for the long haul and want comprehensive instruction, try the "Ann Pale Kreyol" text and tapes and the Haitian Creole Learners Dictionary put out by the Creole Institute at Indiana University.
I use this ESL book to teach Kreyol at Duke University!.......2000-08-07
I realize that this is an ESL text, but I have been using this picture dictionary since fall of 1997 to teach Haitian Kreyol to Medical and Divinity students and faculty at Duke University, as well as to youth and adult groups traveling to Haiti on mission trips. It has proved true that a picture speaks louder than words. The bold graphics make the vocabulary learning a wee bit more exciting than they would working only with text. Also, I appreciate the practical mix of verbs and adjectives, as well as nouns. I recommend it to everyone who is teaching or studying Kreyol, especially beginners.

A Love Letter for All Ages.......2001-02-07
This beautifully illustrated book is a poem about love and the loves that a school-aged boy has. Along the way we encounter family and friends and the reader is left wondering who will receive the heart that the boy has made. The storytelling is engaging and the reader will surely not be disapointed in the end. I plan on giving this as a gift book to all who have made a memorable impact in my son's life.

Book Description
A gift book with humor and heart
The one thing Dolores is absolutely NOT supposed to do is touch her big sister Faye’s things. But when Faye hides a mysterious heart-shaped box, Dolores can’t stop herself from peeking inside. What she discovers is irresistible – a singing froggie Valentine’s Day necklace! What would happen if she just “borrows” it for a day? Trouble! For when the necklace disappears, Dolores must go to hilarious extremes to make things right with Faye, even enlisting the help of her long suffering cat, Duncan.
Witty text and droll pictures full of funny details give readers much to laugh at as the irrepressible Dolores learns that in matters of the heart it’s important to give as well as take.

Customer Reviews:
The Perfect Valentine's Day Gift for Your Little Critter!.......2005-12-15
Little Critter is very excited that Valentine's Day has finally arrived, as his class is having a huge celebration in honor of the occasion. Little Critter and all of his classmates are making Valentine's Day mailboxes, decorating the classroom with red and pink hearts, and eating cupcakes. But Little Critter is devoting most of his time to making a very special card for an extra-special Valentine; while also hoping that someone gives him a nice Valentine's Day greeting, as well.
I have loved LITTLE CRITTER ever since I was a little critter myself, and am overjoyed to see his arrival on bookstore shelves, once again. Mercer Mayer's illustrations are gorgeous, and really convey the feelings that each and every character is feeling, from bashful to happy, to concerned and in love. With each turn of the page, readers will see - and read about - Little Critter taking part in Valentine's Day celebrations. And this LITTLE CRITTER book is even better than the rest, because it features sweet little lift-the-flaps on every other page. HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY, LITTLE CRITTER! is the perfect Valentine's Day gift for your little critter!

The only problem is that the wedding has to take place in the Longs' house, which is almost a block away. That means that Granny and Mrs. Little (with Baby Betsy to look after) might not be able to attend the joyous event. But Cousin Dinky contrives an ingenious device for transporting the women to the Longs' house. After an adventurous journey, Lucy, as flower girl, and Tom, as ring bearer, attend the tiny bride and groom in a ceremony sure to delight all Littles' fans.
Customer Reviews:
Quite charming.......2005-03-01
Living on this Earth, right under our very noses, is a race of tiny people. They are not dwarfs or elves, but simply tiny people, six inches tall at the most and possessing beautiful, furry tails. And in the home of the Biggs, lives a family of these tiny people, called the Littles.
In this book, cousin Dinky Little comes over and announces his engagement to be married to Della Kett. The whole family would like to come to the wedding, but it is so far to the Long's house, where the wedding is to be. But, don't worry; Dinky Little has a plan for transporting them, a helium balloon. This is likely to be a big adventure for some very little people!
I am a fan of Mary Norton's Borrowers books, and was saddened by the knowledge that there would never be any more. When I discovered Mr. Peterson's Littles books I was overjoyed, hoping that these would be just as good. Well, I wasn't disappointed! This book in particular is adapted from the book The Littles Have a Wedding, and is layedout so as to be easy for younger readers.
The story itself is quite charming, and Jacqueline Rogers' illustrations are wonderful. If you have a young reader (4-8 is probably just right) who would like reading stories of little people, then this is the book for you. My family and I recommend it to you and yours.

Down with Cupid!.......2007-02-20
What great stories!
Elle owns the Cup O' Love coffee bar and restaurant that Elle, Becca & Lucky have their get-together on Friday nights and end up planning the Valentine Party at Cup O' Love to help Elle get more business and Max has volunteered to install WiFi for this promotion. Everyone how signs up has their own webpage to get to meet that special person and the party is to be held on February 14th!
Debra Salonen gives us the middle-age couple in Elle & Max in, THE MAX FACTOR. Elle is 51! They went through school together, she was the popular cheerleader and he was the geek! Lots of years later, with his widowhood and her divorce behind them they find love. Of course he has to be her friend before she can see that they are a great couple.
Molly O'Keefe has written Becca's story. Elle is Becca's aunt and Becca is 27, her mother wants her to be an accountant with Mom & Dad's firm and she is but she's really an artist and makes wonderful valentines for Elle to sell in her coffee bar and Lucky to sell at her Lucky Duck Collectibles. She has an after-school art program in the room above the Cup O' Love. One of her pupil's is 10 y.o. Penny and Becca has a crush on Penny's dad Will. Penny and Aunt Elle try to be cupid for Becca & Will.

Sit back, relax, fill your own Cup O' Love and be prepared for an enchanting trio of stories with Who Needs Cupid?.......2007-01-23

Sit back, relax, fill your own Cup O' Love and be prepared for an enchanting trio of stories with Who Needs Cupid?.
In The Max Factor we meet Elle Adams and her two dearest friends as they plot ways to get back at Cupid for all the disastrous love they've had in the past. It starts as a joke, but when Elle decides to run a Valentines dateathon in hopes up drumming up more business for her failing coffee shop Cup O' Love, she gets more than she bargained for. Max loved Elle dearly in the past and had his heart broken when she stood him up for the Valentine's Dance in high school. He has since married and been widowed but has never forgotten his first love... Elle. Now he schemes to prove to her he's the only man she needs.
This story is as much about family relationships as it is the romance between Max and Elle. While their story is strong and heartwarming as we see them find they love they both deserve, we get as much of a glimpse into their other relationships as well. Elle and her sister Jane have struggled with their relationship for years and it takes a little help from others to realize how much their battles are hurting them and everyone around them. There is also Max's relationship with his grown children, his grandchild, and the chess team he coaches at the high school. The chess team actually provides a lot of humor to the story through their antics and endear themselves to us.
The second story in the collection, A Valentine for Rebecca, allows for us to meet Rebecca "Becca" Potter, the artistically gifted niece of Elle stuck in a job she hates and has to hide her work teaching art classes to the kids in town and her personally designed line of Valentines cards from her unaccepting parents. And it certainly doesn't help matters any that she has a crush (but is it really just a crush?) on Will Blakely, the father of Penny, one of her young students. Penny just happens to think Becca would make a perfect girlfriend for her dad. So with a little help from some friends, they decide to make all of Will's and Becca's dreams come true.
Becca is torn between her perceived duties to her family and her true desire to make a living with her art. As she struggles with the weight of her family battles, she has not forgotten how to help other families. She touches the hearts of some very special children in her class, not the least of which is Penny, who is turning inward to get over the pain of her family breaking up. Through Will's relationship with his daughter we see the immense amount of love he has to share, if only he could find the right person. Watching these two reluctant lovebirds find happiness together is enough to warm anyone's heart.
In the concluding story, Lucky in Love, we finally get to see Lucky win her man. Her dearest friend in the world is Pastor Joshua Watts, so much so she can't imagine life without him. So when she proposes on New Year's Eve and he rejects her, Lucky's heart is in pieces. Josh is going through a crisis in his faith and has decided to give up the little church his grandfather and father built and preached in for a new life in the big city. But Lucky thinks he is making a big mistake and would do almost anything to keep him in town. What both need to understand that their love for each other is all they need to restore their faith in life and each other.
Lucky's story has the longest timeline, and is the most independent, of any in this trio. It starts with us seeing her heart crushed by Josh's rejection and her efforts to recover over the next couple months. She is stubborn and willful, which makes it that much more difficult for her relationship with Josh to recover from his announcement that's he's leaving town. There is also a more inspirational tone to this story as almost everything Lucky and Josh encounter during the story is related to their dedication to the church. Watching these two best friends turned romantic couple is a joy to experience, even through the setbacks they find along the way.
Lucky, Elle, and Becca are three very different women bound to each other in friendship. Each of their stories are as unique as they are, though Who Needs Cupid? Shows us that underneath everything, all anyone really wants is their own Cup O' Love filled to overflowing. This is a heartwarming collection of love stories that are sure to remind everyone of what really matters in life.
