An excellent resource for new Ontario Gr. 9 Art curriculum.......1999-06-19
This is a well researched and concisely written overview of the key elements of the Group of Seven. The price of the paperback edition is such that it can easily be included as a key text resource for the new Ontario Gr. 9 art curiculum. It is organised in a way that allows for easy parsing into lesson sized units. Also, creatinhg review and extension activities should be easy. I recommend it to any teacher who wishes to include required units of study on the group of seven. John Fair OCCI, Oshawa

Book Description
See the legendary vine that dominates the Southern landscape in vivid color in this book, Kudzu in America.
It is the only book in print for the general reading public that tells the story of how kudzu came to America, about our entangled love and hate for this alien vine, and its impact upon our economy, environment and culture.
The author has thoroughly researched the subject and presents a comprehensive analysis of the serious environmental problem kudzu vine is causing in America.
She advocates solving this problem by using kudzu as a raw material for useful consumer products as they do in Japan and other Asian countries. These uses are documented with facts and photographs.
Kudzu in America is an excellent reference book, and illustrated with 150 photographs. The 8 1/2 x 11 inch format accommodates large, detailed photographs.

a fan of all plants usefull.......2003-04-07
I found "KUDZU in America" to be a delightful, fun and fast read. The challenge is that Kudzu is here, available, and above all is useful for making many products should not be ignored. That this plant can (and should) be viewed as an abundant potential *resource* -Not- simply as a pest, will be difficult for most to see. There is no 'silver bullet' quick fix, and it appears that utilizing Kudzu to it's fullest extent is fairly labor intensive. But I agree with the author that *harvesting* and using Kudzu (Many examples are listed) makes so much more sense, and since other countries do, Americans should be able to as well.
Educational and entertaining.......2003-04-01
All the pictures in this book are in color, much to my surprise. They are so vivid it is like taking a trip to a kudzu field but lots less trouble. I did not know kudzu bloomed until I read this book.
I'm a storyteller and artist, and I give this book high marks in both categories.
Book Description
kud • zu \kud-zü\ n: a ubiquitous vine/weed found in Southern climes that, left uncontrolled, will grow over any fixed object in its path, including trees, power lines, and the entire state of Georgia.
deb•u•tante \de-byu-tänt\ n: a young woman making a debut into society, easily spotted in white dress and pearl necklace. Common names include Muffy, Bootsy, and Bunny.
Eadie Boone is no shrinking violet. An artist and former beauty queen who married into one of the first families of Ithaca, Georgia, she tackles everything with gusto and flair. But tailing her wayward husband proves to be, well, an exasperating chore. If only Trevor would just see the light, dump his twenty-two-year-old hussy, and return home, Eadie’s creative energy could be put to better use. Now all she has to do is convince him.
Nita Broadwell, a good Southern girl from a good Southern family, is jolted out of complacency when she discovers condoms in her husband’s shirt pocket (“Maybe he’d found them on the ground and picked them up”). Between clinging to denial and dodging her overbearing mother-in-law, Nita is also trying to break her addiction to steamy bodice-ripper novels. Only now it appears she’s authoring her own real-life romance tale with a hunky handyman thirteen years her junior.
Lavonne Zibolsky–a transplanted Yankee, bless her heart–is saddled with planning the annual Broadwell & Boone law firm party. That and her lackluster marriage have her seeking solace in the contents of her refrigerator. If she could just put down the Rocky Road ice cream and peach pie, she might get around to finding a caterer, dropping sixty pounds, and figuring out how to fall in love with her husband again. Not necessarily in that order.
Bonded by years of friendship, these three women discover what else they have in common: lying, cheating spouses. So they heed their collective betrayals as a wake-up call and band together to exact sweet revenge. The take-charge trio will see to it that the punishment is just, exquisitely humiliating, and downright hilarious.
Cathy Holton’s debut novel is a delicious yarn of friendship and marriage, secrets and retribution, and how nothing stays hidden for long. Against a Southern backdrop of gentility and decorum, Revenge of the Kudzu Debutantes dares to abandon Junior League social graces in ways that would make even Scarlett O’Hara blush.
"It’s great fun reading about these women as they trade their tea for tequila and get smart, get out, and get even, with amusing, and surprising results." --Nancy Thayer, author of The Hot Flash Club
"Sly, smart, and full of great characters -- and then there’s that sweet, sweet revenge. Getting even has never been so creative. Or delicious." --Louise Shaffer, author of The Ladies of Garrison Gardens

Revenge of the Kudzu Debutantes.......2007-09-24
This story had a chance to be funny, but the author lost it. I could barely wade through it, and wouldn't have if it hadn't been a "fun" selection by my book club. It wasn't fun. It was a chore. I only gave it a star above, because your system wouldn't let me leave it blank.
Kuduz Deb's Rule!!!.......2007-09-15
This has to be one of the best reads of this summer. Being divorced myself, I wished I could have done some of the things "the girls" did in this book. It was a fun read and I look forward to the next installment of "The Deb's"
NOBODY DOES REVENGE BETTER THAN SOUTHERN WOMEN!.......2007-08-24
I need not give a plot summary as others have done it so well. But I do wonder why Southern woman do revenge so much better than Northern women! Could it be the speech pattern of Southern women, all that "bless your heart" and you don't know you've been wounded until you faint from loss of blood? I laughed out loud, to the point of my husband asking me if I was okay, during the hunting trip scenes. And the Kudzu Ball description had me rolling on the floor. This was a delightful story and I can't wait to read the next book about these lively, wonderful women!
Read it in one day!.......2007-07-08
I loved this book. I felt Ms. Holton perfectly introduced each character and then showed us why they were the way they were. As someone else wrote, even though it is about revenge, it's not evil, just real. And funny! Looking forward to the next one!
Funniest book I have read in years.......2007-07-06
This is a must read for anyone that enjoys a good, funny, southern belle book. Ms. Holton has written a book that should be made into a movie. I hope someone sends the book to someone like Penny Marshall. Can't you see Julia Roberts, Cathy Bates and Bett Midler playing the lead roles?

Customer Reviews:
Have not yet ordered the book.......2001-09-11
I have not yet ordered or seen this book, but I am truely fascinated by the uses of Kudzu in as much as I have been able to find out about it on the internet. Actually, I currently have some Kudzu growing up onto a fence in my backyard, and yes, it is growing extremely rapidly. However, I have been unable to find out about the apparently called: "pods" that are growing on it.. they are NOT "flat" as I have seen noted, but round, tubular shaped, bigger at the bottom as it hangs on my fence (one is nearly 3 feet long!!). This has me totally curious and I would really love to know more about it. If someone could help, I would really appreciate it... thank you..
I'm Into Wild Foods.......2001-02-04
I am into wild foods and this is the first one I have found that shows how to use kudzu. Most of the books about wild foods in the South feature plants that are hard to find and harvest. Kudzu is plentiful but I never knew what a gold mine it was until I read about a kudzu recipe contest that is open all during 2001 for cash prizes and bought this book.

The Book of Kudzu.......2001-05-21
Great book on all you need to know about Kudzu powder. There are recipes, history of kudzu, and instructions on making the powder. The book however, is limited to uses and receipes of the powder only and does not include uses of the leaves, shoots, roots, etc. Interesting and worth buying.

Book Description
"Everybody calls me Liar. They don't mean no harm by it, it's just a plain fact that I am the finest truth bender in all of Dixon County. And not little weeny white lies. Big fat whopper ones that make people forget the question they asked in the first place."
When a new girl, Justine, moves to town, Pete Larson -- better known as Liar -- is smitten. He gets his chance to impress her after a strange spacecraft crashes in the woods. Along with the class science geek, Bobby Ray Dobbs, they discover that the crashed UFO holds an amazing key to the future. But who's going to believe a kid named Liar?
Bob Schooley and Mark McCorkle (creators of the hit animated series Kim Possible) introduce a character with a fresh and distinctive voice in this very funny, pitch-perfect look at three unlikely friends who try to make a difference.

An amazing read!.......2007-06-19
A rich, vibrant story with tons of humor! I laughed, I cried...this really is an amazing read! It's meant to be directed at readers younger than me, but children and adults alike will find this book enjoyable. It's definitely up there in the 'Harry Potter' league of books. The snappy, witty writing makes this story a real page-turner. I hope to see more work from the duo in the future!
Theres no lying here.......2007-05-09
Best kid's book I have read in a long time. Loved all of the characters, especially Liar and his perspective on life and his relationships. Charming story ever read.

College student.......2004-12-02
A small sleepy little town called Red Mud Flats experienced heavy rains. This was believed to have caused the kudzu to grow at an amazing rate. Bobby Lee, a young boy from the town volunteered to find a woman named Kudzu Katie to help find a solution for their green foliage problem. Katie suggested the use of the plant to make furniture, baskets, rugs, and food. Mud Flats became famous for its crafts. Kudzu turned out to be a blessing to the little town.
I enjoyed this book. I am writing a research paper on kudzu, and I found this children's book from that research. The uses that the character Katie suggested are real world examples of the uses for today. A teacher could use this book to discuss the introduction of foreign plants into the United States. The illustrations were very green!
Kudzu Chaos.......2004-03-31
I thoroughly enjoyed Kudzu Chaos. The book deals with how to turn a negative situation into a positive one, which I think is something more children's books should address. My child and I found it to be very entertaining and inspiring. The book was very well written, creative, and beautifully illustrated. As a southerner, I found the story unique in that the author wrote a children's book about this plant that is such a large part of the south. We look forward to Ms. Lambe's future books!!

I want to get rid of kudzu; this book told me how........1996-08-11
Several rip-off artists sprayed my kudzu with stuff that just seemed to make it grow better. This book has a chapter by Dr. Miller at Auburn University that tells it like it is. Best $15.00 I ever spent. Matt Roland, Bryson City, NC
Book Description
Cotillion: A formal gathering of bright young women on the verge of entering adulthood, the society pages, and prospective high-tax-bracket marriages. Think a Civil War reenactment with crisp, clean white dresses.
Catfight: An impromptu gathering of not-so-young women on the verge of losing their cool. Think a cotillion with hair-pulling.
It’s been more than a year since the Kudzu Debutantes exacted sweet, merciless revenge on their cheating husbands, but the repercussions are still palpable throughout Ithaca, Georgia: Nita is anxiously preparing herself for marriage to Jimmy Lee, a man thirteen years her junior; Lavonne, despite having dropped her husband–and eighty pounds–and launched her own business, longs for love; and while Eadie remains married to Trevor, she feels more neglected than ever.
So the occasion of Nita’s second wedding seems like just the ticket to cheer up the disconsolate Debs. But they’ve made a formidable enemy in Virginia Broadwell, first lady of Ithaca and the bride’s ex-mother-in-law. Hell-bent on vengeance and determined to restore old-school social mores, Virginia hatches a plan so devious it makes her pedicured toes curl in anticipation.
Soon enough, the women are knocked for a loop–but you can keep a Kudzu Debutante down for only so long. The one thing stronger than Virginia’s wrath is the bond between the three friends, who soon learn that one of Virginia’s Jimmy Choos contains an irresistible Achilles’ heel. With spirit, wit, and down-home gumption, the take-no-prisoners trio decides it’s time to ditch their cotillion manners as they rally to save Nita’s marriage, Lavone’s business, Eadie’s sanity . . . and the honor of Kudzu Debs the world over.
Packed with authentic Southern flavor and characters as colorful as an azalea in full bloom, The Secret Lives of the Kudzu Debutantes serves up stinging one-liners and earthy wisdom in equal measure.
Customer Reviews:
Cathy Holton does it again.......2007-09-08
The author has done it again with a witty and laugh out loud funny novel! I could not put down her first novel and this one is just as good. If you want a great read and to laugh from cover to cover then read the latest goings on with Nita, Lavonne, and Eadie! Cathy Holton's novels should not be missed.
Even better than her first novel.......2007-08-22
In Secrets of the Kudzu Debutantes, the triumvirate of Nita, Eadie and Lavonne return in true form with high spirits, scheming minds and great fun. All three women seem lonely and confused with their male relationships: a neglected marriage, a potentially disastrous marriage to a young carpenter and the solo life of a bright workaholic. Despite their men, these three women know how to work together, bond and indulge in shakers of martinis as they once again plot with delight. While on the one hand, they are a sorry lot, on the other they are smart, lovable and laughable.
While focused on Ithaca, this novel slips to New Orleans, Amelia Island, New York and more where we get a glimpse of worlds larger, but perhaps no different from their small hometown. Regardless of whether we share these women's lives, we can see glimpses of our ourselves not only in too small Ithaca but also at nursing home, tennis courts, bars and hotels.
delightful satire of southern customs.......2007-08-15
One year ago in Ithaca, Georgia the Kudzu Debutantes (Eadie Boone, Nita Broadwell and Lavonne Zibolsky) decided they had enough with cheating spouses so these steel magnolia catfighters (even if one is a carpetbagger) went dirty and revenged the affront. The repercussions of this not so civil war continue to haunt residents of the small town. Lavonne dumped her spouse Leonard and eighty pounds of bagels and ice cream while starting a business; Eadie is still married to Trevor, but feels he still ignores her; Nita divorced Charles. The trio's public actions devastated the reputation of the Broadwell & Boone family law firm where their philandering husbands worked.
Charles' outraged sexagenarian mother Virginia is further angered to learn Nita is marrying "boy toy" carpenter Jimmy Lee Motes. She decides to punish the Kudzu Debutantes for annihilating the family law firm by bankrupting Nita via forcing an expensive custody battle that her husband can afford while her opponent cannot over her granddaughter, Whitney. The second uncivil war has begun at a time that Lavonne finds some romance and Eadie struggles to wake up her now novelist husband, but each knows Nita's needs them now.
As with the first Kudzu Debutantes, the second tale is a delightful satire of southern customs using exaggeration to tell a tale of revenge, counter-revenge, and ultimate trumping revenge. The two sides contain terrific strategic planners whose war shakes up the small Georgia town still reeling from last year's combat. Fans will appreciate the antics of Kudzu threesome as they battle the ultimate dominant steel magnolia in a no holds bar catfight.

A Kudzu Christmas.......2006-01-08
A book of stories that you will want to send the mystery readers on your list. Tales about family set in the season for family.
A collection that includes a story about a vampire who bring his lover to meet the family, a little boy who goes around telling other children there's no Santa Claus, and a little girl who makes wishes. Visit the past with a old woman who remembers when girls didn't use bad language.
A set of well written stories by talented authors put together by editors who ably pick stories to keep you happily reading. You'll remember what the season means and want to sit cozily ensconced in your favorite chair by the fire to read this fun collection.
Recommended as a great Christmas present. Enjoy. I did.
Great Stories in Dudley Do-Right Country too!.......2005-10-02
OK, I confess, I'm from Maine. Not your typical kudzu country. Trust me. Maine's growing season is approximately 45 minutes. But I saw the Introduction was written by the wonderously talented Julia Spencer-Fleming, one of my very favorite authors, so I picked it up. WOW! No spoilers here, but a terrific mix of stories. Some big-name authors, and some newbies; Some suspense and some more hard-core stuff. And all GREAT! There have to be at least two award winners in this bunch. This is about the best holiday gift I can think of for one's mother, especially if she lives south of the Mason-Dixon Line.
