Great visual desk dictionary..........2007-07-31
I am a teacher of Spanish and own a number of visual dictionaries, including the Firefly Five Language Dictionary, the Firefly Spanish/English Dictionary, the Firefly Mini Spanish/English Dictionary, and the DK Five Language Visual Dictionary. I prefer the Firefly dictionaries because they tactfully include the gender of words as a superscript after the word rather than as an indirect article, as in the DK dictionary. The latter has the ill-effect of creating ambiguous genders in instances where the indirect article is truncated:
For example: garlic - l'ail - der Knoblauch - el ajo - l'aglio
The size of this hardcover edition make it more appropriate for use as a desk dictionary rather than a pocket edition. It does not contain any more information than the Mini edition, but the Firefly Five Language Dictionary contains almost twice as many pages and words. Given that the image layouts used in all of the Firefly dictionaries are from a common master, the page count is a very good indication of the word count. Frankly, the quantity of the words in the hardcover edition is ample for even most advanced students of Spanish. And the absence of the extra three languages makes it less cluttered and confusing.
As with any visual dictionary, this one focuses on nouns. Students of the Spanish will still want to have a quality pocket bilingual dictionary like the Larousse:

And a quality Spanish-only dictionary like the Dictionario Practico del Estudiante:

Fun exploring in Spanish.......2007-07-14
My family, including children ages 8 and 11, enjoyed this dictionary on our recent trip to Mexico. It is too large to practically use in conversation, but it is great for thumbing though to browse and learn new words that are related by subject. The pictures are lovely and amazingly detailed. This dictionary is arranged by topic, so the index is also helpful if you're looking for a specific word. Occasionally the index is a bit confusing because words are listed exactly as they appear on the pictures. For example, we had a hard time finding the Spanish word for "kidney" because it was listed under "right kidney" and "left kidney." Because this is a picture dictionary, it is primarily a NOUN dictionary. Adjectives are also included if they differentiate between types of items. You will not find verbs or many prepositions, so this won't be your only Spanish-English dictionary. Nevertheless, this is a great resource for families, for exploring Spanish, and for expanding your topical vocabulary.
Adds interest to learning Spanish.......2007-06-12
You may not want to put this book down. It names things I had never heard of. Our teachers use it when introducing new Spanish vocabulary.
Extraordinary find.......2007-05-13
This is the most useful dictionary I have ever found for shopping and identifying items in my apartment in France. The visual groupings by category (plumbing parts) allow you to find words you wouldn't even know how to look up in a ordinary dictionary. It's a fixture on the bookshelf in my Paris apartment. I even bought a second one for home here in the USA to help with my emails to France.

Comprehensive Dictionary.......2007-08-01
This is a very detailed dictionary - great for medical students or any other students. There are a lot of detailed translations of things I'm not sure I'll ever need to speak about, such as the space station, parts of a rocket, lots of insects, cuts of meat, construction vehicles, the solar system, etc. Very interesting for my 5 year old boy to look at and learn both English and Spanish words. I am a beginning Spanish student and, right now, this book is not very helpful to me. But it's great to look at.
Exceptionally practical format..........2007-07-31

The size of this mini edition and hardened cardboard cover make it almost small enough to keep in your pocket, and easily transportable in a bag for trips or going back and forth to school or work. It is a very usable format for a visual dictionary, without substantially reducing the quantity or quality of the images. The smaller size does mean that the print smaller, but it is still very readable.
The full size, hardcover Spanish/English dictionary by Firefly does not contain any more information than this Mini edition, but the Firefly Five Language Dictionary contains almost twice as many pages. Given that the image layouts used in all of the firefly dictionaries are from a common master, the page count is a very good indication of the word count. Frankly, the quantity of the words in the mini is ample for even most advanced students of Spanish.
As with any visual dictionary, this one focuses on nouns. Students of the Spanish will still want to have a quality pocket bilingual dictionary like the Larousse:

Great Book!!!.......2006-11-10
On a scale of 1 to 5 I give this a 10! This dictionary is really great! It would be very good for ESL studies, or an English speaker learning Spanish. It reminds me of the Richard Scarry books I loved as a child. Even though it says pocket you would need a pretty big pocket, but, it is worth carrying around though. I also bought the full size version for home, and just gave the 5 language version to a niece still deciding what language to study. A+++++

This book is one of that you keep your entire life. It's the best book to assimilate subjects from others languages in a simple way. It's not the best gift for your son, but no doubt, is the most useful.

Bring back the previous edition!.......2007-06-15
The current edition is such a disappointment. The book itself is smaller (instead of being 8x11) and the type is much smaller. It is very difficult to read especially since the page is cluttered with five languages rather than just English. Please lobby the publisher to bring back the previous larger edition with its clean layout. It *could* be such a great teaching tool but is too frustrating for beginning readers in its present state. I wish I had bought it before it went out of print :(
Astonishingly good book.......2007-05-14
This book is awe inspiring. I have never been so amazed by a purchase before. The two most amazing things about it are: it's astonishingly high quality, and it's astonishingly reasonable price. If you want to see beautiful, highly detailed, full-color pictures of nearly all the every-day objects in our world, from parts of the body to types of fishes, animals and birds, sumo wrestlers, fire fighters, household items, manufacturing machinery, computers, clothes ... these are just random selections from over 900 pages. Each picture is labeled in all 5 languages, most pictures are further analyzed into parts, which are also labeled. What it is NOT: it is not lightweight; it is not a travel companion; It is not for people who just want to learn one or two hundred words of a foreign language. It IS for people who really like to know the names of lots of detailed items (many of which I don't even know yet in English) in English, Spanish, French, German, and/or Italian. 5 stars isn't enough. This is a *spectacular* buy.
A Good Visual Guide for Everyone.......2007-01-04
This is a must-have for those who are willing to know the correct name of things instead of giving that always extemporized description that, sometimes, goes nowhere. Excellent book for the children, for the language learner and for anybody who looks for an educational yet fun way to improve vocabulary. It is very well organized into topics and its respective variations and has crystal-clear pictures as well, which is a plus in comparison to other visual dictionaries that is based mostly on drawings. Worth the money.

If your child has a reference book shelf that has a regular dictionary, this book is a great companion to that. It shows pictures of common objects (for example, a jet airplane) and then gives the various names of all the parts. A helpful item in my opinion.

Excellent visual dictionary. I highly recommend this book for those just learning the English language and survivors of brain injuries who need assistance recalling words. I know it's designed for 'juniors', but it's applications are for other people as well.

This is a beautiful book for visual learners. It covers an immense variety of topics with wonderful drawings. I keep it by my computer for a reference, but usually end up leafing through for a half-an-hour because it is so engaging. It would be a great classroom resource for Speech-Language Pathologist who wants to draw students into conversation on specific vocabulary as it is arranged by catagory.

The Princess Diaries is a great book. It is book I love to read over and over again it also is very antertaining and once you start reading you'll NEVER put the book down. It's about a girl named Amelia becoming a princess but she does'nt want to be a princess but at the end she loved being a princess. I hope Meg Cabot keeps writing these very exciting and entertaining stories.
Princess Diaries Times Two.......2004-12-29
This collection of Books 1 and 2 gives you more of an insight into the saga of Mia, an awkward teen, who suddenly finds herself a Princess of a small country. I saw the movie before I read the books, and found them different from one another. The movie is very Disney, while the book is filled with more angst and depth. While I enjoyed the movie, the books themselves are worth reading in order to get the real sense of Mia's inner thoughts or "diary".

The Princess Diaries is written by Meg Cabot. The book was about a girl Amelia. The book was like she wrote in a diary every and she sared it with us. The book was about her dad being a Prince of Ginovia and his mother is the Queen of Ginovia. His mother came to see Amelia to tell her a sceret.Amelia never knew she was a princess. When she found out that she was a Princess she freaked out. She never wanted to tell anyone because they would of made a big deal out of it. She was going to tell her best friend Liliy but she knew she was going to make a big deal and tell everyone. Then Amelia couldn't keep a the secret and more. She told her best frined Lily that she was a Princess and she freaked out. When her grandmother wanted her to go to one of the dinners that she is having she wanted her to get her hair strained and cut. She said that she looked like a freak. When she got to school she was in her math class and she was wearing a hat and the one girl she hates told the teacher that we weren't allowed to wear hats in school so she had to take it off. All the girls were laughing at her. Twards the end her dad dies and something happens! If you want to find out more and what happens read the Princess Diaries.
