Approaching language details informally and with a minimum of classroom-style presentation, author and educator Harvey offers practical instruction in Spanish basics. The focus is on conversational Spanish for teachers, counselors, administrators, and other employees at schools where Spanish is the first language of many students. Two opening chapters present fundamentals of Spanish speech and word order, and familiarize readers with often-used words and phrases that relate directly to school situations. The two following chapters pertain to Spanish that is most useful for communicating with younger students (pre-school through elementary grades) and older students (middle and high school grades). Remaining chapters offer help for counseling in Spanish in issues relating to health care, career guidance, college assistance, educational administration, special-needs, and extracurricular activities. A Spanish-English and English-Spanish glossary is also provided to help educators find the right word or phrase for a variety of situations.

I found this book to be very helpful as a resource in my classroom. With several Spanish speaking students (preschool) I repeatedly returned to this book for answers. I do have some knowledge of Spanish. I can see how this book could not be as helpfull to an educator with little or no Spanish language background. It was very relevant to school situations. I have used it as a resource when dealing with students from 2 years old to 20 years old. Every school should be required to have this wonderful book available to its educators.
Useful if you have had prior experience w/Spanish........2003-10-28
As a special education teacher in an inner city school, I am in constant contact w/the parents of my students, most of whom are of Hispanic descent.
Since I have had prior experience w/Spanish, I am able to make good use of this resource. The authors provide vocabulary and phrases for a pretty good number of school situations. I think they wrote this book under the presupposition that the user would construct their own sentences w/the vocabulary and phrases provided.
Which leads me to one of the big weaknesses of this book. The authors would have done well to use conversation vignettes to introduce the topics they cover as giving the reader a context for use would go a long way to assimilating this vocabulary. As it stands now, this book is a glorified dictionary and phrase book; there was a better way to present a book of this nature that would have been far more useful than what it is in its current form.
Nearly worthless.......2001-10-28
This book should be called "Spanish vocabulary for educators" as that's about all it offers. An occasional poorly presented grammar lesson is thrown in. At one point Mr. Harvey says a grammatical concept is too hard to explain so just find some Spanish speaking people and listen to them. I would have the exact quote (which I did when I wrote to the publisher about this insult to educators) but I threw the book out. Don't waste your money on this piece of trash; a good dictionary will serve you better.

Most language courses give you a lot of words and phrases which are needed if you are a tourist. This one concentrates on what you need if you work in the schools. The author writes very clearly and the lessons follow a natural progression. Everything I learned here was useful. A very good investment. Get the book with the tapes. They are well worth it.

Good Resource!.......2006-07-29
I teach Spanish and ESL/ELL. I often translate materials for other teachers who do not speak spanish and am always looking for good resources.
In my opinion this book is probably not for someone who doesn't know anything about Spanish or who is a beginner. However, if you have some knowledge and are trying to improve your Spanish as an educator, this might be the book for you.
The book is divided into several chapters such as, Information Parents Need to Enroll Their Children in School, The Primary Grades, Success in School, and many others. Each chapter covers basic vocabulary, as well as, how to formulate sentences related to the chapter and a grammar review. There are also practice exercises with an answer key in the back. Over all it covers a large range of vocabulary used in the school setting.

Maisie Potter has a huge crush on Eric Delong. It developed over the summer when they bumped into each other in a pool. Unfortunately, he is dating Liz, an evil cheerleader. Maisie decides to do whatever she can to get his attention, so she tries out for cheerleading. She is cut from the team.
When winter season arrives, Maisie doesn't try out for basketball, which she played the year before. Instead, she is the only girl to try out for wrestling--the team Eric is on. Maisie soon learns that there's a lot more to wrestling than she's seen on television.
As Maisie discovers that she actually likes the sport of wrestling and it's no longer all about getting Eric's attention, she also realizes something awful--everyone seems to be against her. Her coach doesn't seem to want her on his team, her teammates don't accept her and they treat her badly, the fans seem to be rooting against her, and the boys from other schools who are supposed to wrestle her in competitions forfeit the matches, giving her an automatic win in order to avoid wrestling her.
It started off as just something to get a boy's attention, but when things get really tough will Maisie actually stick with the team?
I liked that this book didn't have the classic happy ending. As a result of her decisions Maisie didn't end up getting everything she ever wanted, but she seemed to be satisfied. I really liked Maisie's parents and the way they treated her and her siblings.
I found that many of the characters were far too predictable, though. There were few who were able to surprise me.

This book is amazing! You have to read it!!! This book is about a girl who didn't make it on the cheerleading team and goes for something new, something that no other girl did. She went out for wrestling and made the team but there are a few problems along the way. Can she really do this or is she a fake? You can find out by reading this amazing book!

~There's A Girl In My Hammerlock~
How would I describe it? I could describe it as many things but the top reasons are that it made me think and wonder, and also makes me want to write my own book. Best of all it made me read, read, and read.
The title sounded very wierd, but the moment I saw this book I said,"I can't believe that I am going to read this book." When I was done reading the book,I said to myself, "This book was the best book ever." I also said,"That saying is right. You can't judge a book by the cover."
You just have to get your hands on THIS BOOK!
The cover isn't the best thing ever, but the book is!
Go to library now and check out this book. You will have this book forever, even in your dreams. I know I will. If you like to be outside a lot or eat dinner, well, you are not going to have time anymore for that. You will read,read,read!
This book needs those five stars. If the stare would go higher I would rate it 100 if there was such a thing, and a Newbery medal! Pick this book up NOW!!!!!!
Great Wrestling Book.......2006-10-03
My review on this book is a pretty good review. This book wouldn't exactly be my first choice, but it was a good book. If you were into wrestling I would highly recomend this book. It has a lot of wrestling moves and some terms listed. There are some funny parts as well. I would not recomend this book to children under 5th grade and would strongly suggest that you would at least be 10 or 11. This is a good book and I highly suggest it.

There's a Girl in my Hammerlock.......2000-11-21
This was actually the first book I ever read all the waythrough in less than three days. ... Jerry Spinelli has a way of pin pointing a youngperson's perspective and expressing it to his audience. It was a coming of age story, about a girl and her secret crush. Her crush was on the wrestling team for her school. So basically she goes out for the team too, to be closer to him. Once she makes the team she realizes what a big deal, it was for her to make it. Her purpose than changes from love to overcome social sexual-bias against women, peer pressure, and high school torture. It was a warming story, that I can still remember. I would highly recommend this book for young girls, it's a great girl power story.
