"Gratitude is the most passionate transformative force in the cosmos," promises author Sarah Ban Breathnach (Simple Abundance) in her introduction. So that everyone can experience the transformational rewards of being grateful, Ban Breathnach designed a day-by-day journal for counting one's blessing. Years of disciplined gratitude have taught Ban Breathnach that "if you give thanks for five gifts every day, in two months you may not look at your life in the same way as you might now." Ideally, the journal writer will feel less discontent and "complicated need" and instead feel more awareness of simple abundance. The journal itself is highly inviting--bordered with simple country colors of cream, corn yellow, and dried sage. But even more inviting are the inspirational quotes sprinkled throughout, such as Henry Van Dyke's message: "Gratitude is twofold--love coming to visit us and love running out to greet a welcome guest." --Gail Hudson

What a wonderful journal.......2007-09-18
I loved this journal. I bought one for each of my friends. Sarah starts by pointing out all the "simple" things we should be grateful for, things we overlook which I found very interesting. So on those days where we feel we had a bad day and theres nothing to be grateful for you can go to that list and find at least 10 things. Its worth the money, you'll enjoy it.
Absolutely blah!.......2007-09-16
I don't know what I was expecting when I purchased this book! It is a journal, but the spaces allotted for each day are quite small. Perhaps the author didn't anticipate that some people have large handwriting or that others would have a lot to say. I never used it, and would not recommend it. Buy a journal with larger spaces!
Starting small gets big results.......2007-05-12
Everyone knows they should journal, right? So why don't we? It's simple, most of us don't know how to begin. This little book makes it simple to get started as it lends the reader a cheat-sheet sort of format to kick-start the process, takes all of 3 minutes to complete one entry and before you know it, Blammo! You're in the habit of writing in a journal every day. I bought several so that I could send one out to each of my business coaching clients as part of their "Welcome" package. My clients report, after having journaled for a couple of weeks now, that they feel GREAT about their efforts and are more conscious than ever about all that they really do have to be grateful for every single day.
Great Attitude Adjustment!.......2007-03-19
My sister bought me one of these journals for my birthday one year and I loved it. I tried finding them in book stores but couldn't find them anywhere. When I found them on-line I bought 5...one for myself and then a few to have on hand...they make great gifts. This journal truly helps to keep the focus on blessings and things we can be thankful for each day!
Wonderful gift idea.......2007-01-10
I gave out these gratitude journals for Christmas and New Year's gifts this year. What a wonderful way to start off the New Year with being grateful for what we already have. This journal is perfect for jotting down the 5 things a day that you're grateful for. This is a great gift idea for any occassion.

Very Intriguing.......2007-08-26
This book was excellent with a capital E. Everything about it was exactly how the movie was, and that's what I liked about it. Everything was the same nothing was changed. It was a sad book that depicts the way how sick people live in this world. This man Tim Hennis was sent to prison for a crime he didn't even commit, and whoever did it was never caught and only god knows when that person or persons will be punished for the muders of Kara, Erin and Katie Eastburn. I would recommend everyone who loves to read, to read this book it is worthwhile.
Good Book...Case Reopened,.......2007-04-01
The book was good, however new DNA tests done over the summer of 2006 connect Hennis to the murders.
The Army has charged Hennis and he is awaiting an Article 32 Hearing in April 2007 to see if the case can proceed to trial.
An Article 32 hearing is the military version of a civilian Preliminary Hearing, in which a judge or panel will decide if there is enough evidence to go to trial.
We shall see how this all unfolds soon.
PS. THe military can charge and try someone who was aquitted in a civilian/state court, and it is not considered double jeopardy.
Fayetteville Triple Murder Case Reopens 21 Years Later.......2006-11-10
I thought innocent Victims was well written and could not put this one down. It did make me feel a bit nervous and jumpy espeically if your home alone. Twenty-one years ago, a wife and two children were killed in their Fayetteville home in front of the youngest child. But now, after two trials, a conviction and an acquittal, sources indicate that the case has been reopened. I am really intrested to see what the outcome will be this time around. I have always had so many unanswered questions about this case and Tim Hennis. I pray that justice will finally be served and these senseless horrible murders won't have to go unsolved any longer.
not again!.......2004-10-21
Fort Bragg, NC. An innocent man is sent to prison for the murders of a young wife and her two little daughters.. No, it's not the McDonald case of 1970, it's the 1985 case of Katie, Kara and Erin Eastburn, murdered savagely in their own home. This time its not the husband, Captain Gary Eastburn who is found guilty, but another soldier on the base, Tim Hennis. The only evidence pointing to him is the so-called eyewitness Patrick Cone, who comes across as mentally retarded or at least, stupid and inept. There is no physical evidence linking Hennis to the crime, he did adopt a pet dog from the family shortly before the murders. The Eastburns'15-year-old babysitter reportedly had an obsession with Dr. Jeffrey McDonald and exchanged letters with him on a regular basis. She was a drug user and pretty weird, according to this book. But when one of the hired investigators, (who helped put McDonald away), tried to claim McDonald masterminded a plan to get the girl, Julie, to wipe out another family so he would be more likely to get parole flabbergasted me. That guy sounds like a real nut to me. I won't finish the story and ruin it for you, but its very good, and justice does prevail although there is no closure. Of several of the crime books I've read, "Hush, Little Babies", about Darlie Routier, the woman on death row for killing her two little sons, (Texas), "Fatal Vision", the McDonald case, (North Carolina), and this one, the only one I believe deserved to be found guilty and sent to prison was Susan Smith, "Sins of the Mother", and "Mother Love, Deadly Love".(South Carolina). I guess I wouldn't want to be in the South anywhere close to where there's a murder going on!
Very Scary.......2001-11-21
I read this book many years ago, and I can remember it being right up there with Helter Skelter as far as scaring the heck out of me goes. The sad story will stay with you for a long time, and the fact that no one has paid for this heinous crime makes it all the more tragic.

Sickening Story But Very Well Written.......2006-12-06
This was the first true crime book I had read by Brian J. Karem but I found it to be extremely well written and very detailed. Unfortunately, the facts of the case are a bit hard to stomach (especially if you are a parent) but Karen doesn't tip-toe around the gruesome details. I recommend this book to any fan of true crime.
I was there -.......2006-06-19
I'd say a little over 1/4 of this book is accurate. I am not going to say who I am but I did know Sam very very well and a lot of the stuff the author "assumes" about Sam is just that - assumptions, not fact.
It probably would have been a decent true crime read if the facts had been there a bit more. Also, if it hadn't been about someone I cared about :(
Even-handed, compelling account of a nightmare.......2001-12-18
"Innocent Victims" recounts the 1997 murder of Eddie Werner, 11, by Sam Manzie, the mentally disturbed 15-year-old victim of 43-year-old pedophile Steve Simmons. It's a remarkably compelling & well-told story & it gets better as it goes along. One theme is the failure of the court system to respond to the warnings & pleas of Manzie's own parents before the murder. The scene where a prosecutor attacks Manzie's mother in court is genuinely enraging--it's an incredible moment that demonstrates how successfully the author pulls the reader into the story. It made me fervently wish the prosecutor lost his job. The real achievement of this book is getting the reader to care about all sides of the case. Brian J. Karem shows the pain & frustrations of both Werner's parents & Manzie's parents excellently, shows the consequences for both sides, the remarkable similarity between their situations. He shows the families' period of feuding in such a way that you don't judge them for hating each other, you empathize for both sides. And Karem goes above & beyond by presenting the pedophile's point of view in spite of its inherent odiousness. He shows who the pedophile is & lets you decide for yourself what to think (it's not a difficult decision). This was a complex case & Karem presents it very clearly, very economically & compellingly in a way that surely even those involved would find strikingly empathetic. The only people who emerge with dignity in this are Ed & Valerie Werner & Nick & Dolores Manzie. The justice system was at its indifferent worst from start to finish. Karem also manages to deal with thoroughly distasteful subjects sensitively. Excellent.

A true Account of A Difficult Event.......2007-09-29
Those who reviewed this book prior to me are MISTAKEN that this book is untrue. It was written by the reporter who was covering this case for the local newspaper during the 2 years it took place.
This is the story the "other side" doesn't want you to hear. Namely, the FACTS in the case as they unfolded. He is unbiased in explaing why 3 teenage boys were arrested and eventually convicted in the brutal murder of 3 young grade school boys in the town of W. Memphis, Arkansas. The reporter does an excellent job of reporting both positive and negative behaviors of the community, families of all 6 boys, the police department, and those involved.
Take a chance: become informed as to why these boys came to be in jail. Everything contained in this book can be verified through newspaper articles and police reports, both before the murder and after.
It was not written to smear anyone, but rather to explain why a case that to outsiders appeared to be a "whitch hunt" unfolded. Testimonies of many individual are given. The author wrote what he reported as he saw it unfolding in court.
A Sensationalist Account of an Important Case.......2007-08-07
Two books have been written on this case; if you're only going to read one, though, do not choose this one. This case has turned out to be a very controversial one with seriously troubling questions about the manner in which the defendants were identified, incriminated, and prosecuted. But these authors, two of whom covered the trial as newspaper reporters, pretty much miss the story concerning those issues and instead choose to report on every lurid bit of unsubstantiated rumor and gossip concerning Satanic rituals and orgies and sacrifices that they can find; no tale is too absurd, no accusation too outrageous, to be harped on. A goth magazine found in the trash of one of the defendant's girlfriends gets twice as much ink (two pages worth) as the trial testimony of a defense expert witness on false confessions, an issue that is perhaps the central point of contention in this case. Two more pages go to a juvenile in confinement who is obviously improvising a false story about local Satanic street gangs affiliated with Bloods and Crips, while another defense expert who testifies about the lack of factual evidence or scientific basis to support the then-trendy theory of a national occult crime wave gets less than one page.
Like national reporters who have recently been embarrassed by simply believing and uncritically reporting stories from government officials about things such as the Jessica Lynch ordeal, stories which it is now obvious were largely invented by those officials, these reporters basically accepted the word of the authorities - prosecution and police - hook, line, and sinker without doing any critical investigatory work. To take one example that represents the blind trust that these reporters had in the accuracy of what they were being told by officials, the authors repeatedly express how amazing of a coincidence it is that the case number happened to be 0666; it seems so improbable that a case in which the police claim teenage Satanists were involved would happen to get, just by chance, the number of the beast. But they quote the lead detective as their authority that this is purely a coincidence, and they accept his word. Had they only paid a bit more attention to the case files, though, they would have discovered what the author of the other book on this case discovered, which is that the earliest reports from this case were originally numbered 0555; apparently, this was not some "coincidence" after all, but a deliberate act.
The book's Postscript, written years after the rest of the text, does acknowledge, though, that the authors may have erred when they wrote the disputable claim that, at the conclusion of the sentencing phase of the defendant Damien Echols, "all doubts that police had the wrong man began to evaporate." Apparently with the benefit of some hindsight, they have revised their stance and now claim that "given the void of evidence in this case - and developments since the trials - Echols' contentions [of innocence] may merit another look."
And another book. "Devil's Knot" is a superior account in almost every way. However, all of this is not to say that "The Blood of Innocents" is not worth reading at all. It can be seen as a supplement to the other book; it does contain some useful background and interesting descriptions of the towns involved, and it describes early leads and police interrogations of other initial suspects that went nowhere. But for a detailed, accurate, insightful account of how this case unfolded, you have to look elsewhere.
Slanted and Irrelevant Story.......2007-06-14
I bought this book after viewing the documentary, Paradise Lost. I was disapointed. I was expecting and hoping for an unbiased account of this brutal, terrifying crime. Instead, I bought a poorly-written and biased account of the crimes.
Instead of focusing on the sensational crimes and the "Satanism Scare" that plauged the media for months, Blood of Innocents focued more on descriptions of the city and tedious biographies of minor characters.
For those interested in the case of the "West Memphis Three," I would suggest they search elsewhere.
The Best Book About the West Memphis 3 Case Yet Written.......2007-02-13
Written in an objective newspaper style, Blood of Innocents is the single best book yet written about the West Memphis murder case of 1993 in which 3 eight year olds were sadistically murdered, tortured and mutilated.
Unlike the grossly overrated Devil's Knot, this book does not feature any elaborate conspiracy theories about "satanic panic" and police skullduggery. Instead, it lays out the evidence against the 3 criminals and does so in throughly convincing fashion.
Ignore the conspiracy theory hype, Blood of Innocents lays the facts out for all those who really care about the truth in this case.
Heartily recommended.

full of information.......2000-04-26
this book is full of information about Waneta Hoyt but it also is about another parent who killed his babies. Stephen Van Der Sluys also murdered his babies because they were in his way & he did not want to take care of them. Charles Hickey does know how to tell a story.
A can't-put it-down book.......1998-12-31
A very well written book. This is a story that needed to be brought to book to let people take a look at what happened in the family life a Waneta Hoyt and the deaths of babies; Eric, James, Julie, Molly, and Noah. Thanks should go to William Fitzpatrick, DA and to all the investigators for bring these murders to light. Also thanks to the author and contributors. This story will make you mad for what Waneta did, sad for the innocent babies and relieved for some justice. A must read!
Fine investigation of infanticide masquerading as SIDS.......1997-03-28
*Goodbye, My Little Ones* concerns a case of serial infanticide in New York state. A prosecutor was working on a case in which a father was tried and convicted for murdering one of his three children. (He was in fact suspected of having killed all three.) An expert witness brought the prosecutor's attention to an earlier case, in the late 1960s, in which several children in another family had supposedly died of SIDS (crib death); the witness believed those were homicides also. Eventually the prosecutor reopened that case, and the mother, Waneta Hoyt, was convicted in 1995. I particularly like true crime books with a medical angle. This one includes interesting information on the history of SIDS research. Two of Hoyt's children (identified only by their initials) had been included in a major paper on SIDS in 1972, but almost from the very beginning some physicians suspected that those cases were homicides. The authors' style is a bit more reportorial and brisk than the work of some other writers in this genre; Ann Rule, for instance, takes more time to develop the atmosphere of a setting. This book moves the reader right along without, however, slighting any points of detail or character

Finally , someone speaks out .......2007-10-05
This book ia an excellant education source regarding the plight of the child welfare system. I did not realize that this was such a problem until I read LaMonte McNeese's book "How to be strong, when falsely accused. It was an eyeopener for me and more people need to speak out and educate others so that change can occur.
serious presentation of serious problem.......2006-02-25
The book tracks history of child intervention and describes the present situation adequately, but does not assess the reasons for the present situation in a societal context. He does not analyze the role of the press, training, and prosecutorial bias of the courts and the attack generally on the Constitution, although he does describe the result in great detail. He shows the harm that unrestrained child protection does to children, families, and society, although he understates the problem. The book is well researched and footnoted, as well as being well written. Some suggestions for change would be helpful.
how will history judge our age?.......1999-08-21
wexler's book should be required reading. i wish i could get "dr" laura to read this book. it would certainly give her pause before saying kids are better off in foster care or an institution than with their parents... the situation in our nation with respect to child protection is tragic. the power of these programs to act is beyond the power granted in the constitution to our police. no search warrent is needed. a child can be taken with notifying the parents, without review. the records are sealed. wexler has done a service by writing this book. recommended highly.
If you care about our children or our society you must read........1999-02-08
I have been involved with various aspects of the child protective service system for over 25 years. Based on my own experience, this book does not exaggerate the appalling dangers our families and children face at the hands of these systems. I found the accounts, chilling as they are, to be very accurate reflections of what I know to be everyday occurances in our child welfare system. This author has examined the data and the facts and done the homework that all of us should be doing.
THIS SYSTEM HAS TO BE CHANGED!.......1998-09-18
Richard has nailed it. This system is out of control and speaking as one who has been hit, I am very grateful to him for letting in the light.
