Customer Reviews:
This sign book is great for beginners!.......2007-09-28
great book, seriously get it if you are new. I can see the sign so well and understand them. As you get better it will be a good idea to change books. but this one great for now..
Good information.......2007-06-13
I gave this book 3 stars because of the way it is organized and the lack of clarity to many of the illustrations. Sternberg's books may be lacking some vocabulary, but they are much easier to read.
I have a variety of sign books as I am teaching my children signing as a second language. I can't recommend one book or author over any others...they all have their good points and negative ones. I think you have to take a look at a book and see if its drawings and organization make sense to your style of learning.
Signing Illustrated The Complete Learning Guide.......2007-06-08
I just love this book. we have stared a Signing Choir at our church and it shows in great detail the movments for all the words we have looked up. It is so good my 8 yr. old Grandaughter can do it too.
Great dictionary.......2007-05-25
We are using sign language for our speech delayed toddler and have found this guide very helpful in showing us how to do new signs that we want to introduce.
The Gold-Standard of Sign Language Books.......2007-05-05
It seems counter-intuitive that you would be able to learn a lot of sign language just by looking at pictures in a book. But if you have this book by Mickey Flodin (as well as Barron's American Sign Language the Easy Way), you are well on your way to becoming fairly communicative in ASL.
ASL purists will immediately jump on this statement, but please allow me to explain. Unless you are enrolled in a class taught by a certified instructor, you will not be proficient enough to be a sign-language interpreter.
However, if you want to be fairly conversant; if you want to be able to communicate with the hearing impaired, this resource (as well as the Barron's book)can have you well on your way. By using /studying these two books I was able to conduct an interview in a social services-setting with a hearing-impaired person, who used ASL, by using the ASL I learned from these two works. Also, I was able to tell my daughter what two deaf individuals were talking about one day while shopping in an office supply store. It can be done! You can learn this wonderful language!
The illustrations are simple, and crystal-clear. Definitions for signs are given along with memory aids that all but ensure memorization by the learner. The author has written this book by categorizing the over 1400 signs in this book by concept as this has proven to be the most efficient, thorough, and quickest way for individuals to pick up signs.
To top it all off, there is a comprehensive index which includes all entries and synonyms for easy-cross reference. This is the type of book that you can (1)spend a focused, concerted amount of time studying, and/or (2)you can carry it with you (like, let's say, to the doctor's office)to study on the fly.
I love this book and I would highly recommend it. Mr. Flodin has performed a great service to those of us who wish to serve/and communicate with those persons who have limited or no hearing. As a hearing impaired individual myself, this book has given me a lot of encouragement that I will be able to continue to communicate, should my hearing deteriorate.
Customer Reviews:
joy of signing is but its title; a joy! and signing!.......2000-04-18
back in the old country, the deaf community is a highlight. Though they are not treated to the BEST lentil perogies, they are treated to the 2nd best borscht. Lucky them...I love perogies... i need this book to give to my deaf granddaughter Oibaf. She is very young and very scared becasue she lost her hearing in a cooking accident. She was listening to music and the radiation in our gas stove reacrted with the sound waves, destrying her anvil bone. Poor little meshugina. She's still my little dear though. She needs to be joyous and sign, so pease rank this book well...take care and god be with you..Helga

Book Description
The ultimate guide to baby sign language, with color photos and 200 signs!
You can hear -- your baby can hear -- so whatÂ's the deal? Every parent knows how frustrated -- how enraged -- babies become when they canÂ't make themselves clear to their families. But now, before they can talk, they can tell you what they mean -- with signs!
Signing has taken the parenting world by storm. Why? Every parent is eager to give their baby the best possible upbringing, the least frustration, and the best head start for achieving in todayÂ's driven, competitive society. Research (funded by the National Institutes of Health) has found that signing babies: talk sooner and have larger vocabularies; have stronger parent/child bonds; have less frustration, crying and tantrums; show more interest in books; engage in more sophisticated play; and have higher IQ scores. Now, what parent doesnÂ't want that?
Baby signing has been featured on Dateline and Oprah.
Teach Your Baby to Sign features photographs of babies signing, plus line illustrations of each sign. And it provides 200 useful signs -- more than any other book -- so parents can have a wide selection to choose from, along with stage-by-stage guidance so theyÂ'll know which signs to teach first and which to add as they and their baby become progressively more skilled and comfortable with signing.
Book Description
Have you ever seen a yellow elephant, glowing in the jungle sun?
Have you seen a green frog--splash!--turn blue?
Or a red donkey throw a red-hot tantrum?
In this bright bestiary, poet Julie Larios and painter Julie Paschkis cast a menagerie of animals in brilliantly unexpected hues--encouraging us to see the familiar in surprising new ways.
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant Bestiary.......2007-09-08
Here are some stunning and colorful illustrations, mostly in an African style, which illuminate some wonderfully descriptive and fun poetry full of clever imagery that shows us how words can actually create a picture in one's mind - great examples for classroom teaching. One of my favorites... "Blue Turtle, slow in the blue shade of a blue-leafed garden." Some work better than others, but in general the artistry of both poet and illustrator come together to make a most delightful menagery that will appeal to children as well as adults.

One of the Best Poetry Books for Young Children.......2007-03-07
Rarely have I come across such a wonderful poetry book for young children. My 3 year old is mesmerized by this book--its lovely verses about animals and the beautiful illustrations make this a favorite in our house.
animal poems.......2007-03-03
This is a book of poems about various animals. The poems are great; their content is funny and rhythmic. Through the poems we learn about the various animals. The illustrations are very creative collages that are unique compared to most other children's books.
The poems are short and to the point, and his illustrations are extremely creative.
This would make a great read aloud during a unit on poetry animals.
YELLOW ELEPHANT A BRIGHT BESTIARY.......2007-01-15
A lovely and tantalizing world of colors and shadings and large animals with significant personalities.
Even a three year old remains mesmerized by an orange giraffe or a red braying donkey with red tantrums and the startling pink of a lazy kitty.
The text might appear difficult for a young child, but the words merge easily and fascinate with divergent tones.
Imagine a green frog that becomes incandescent blue with a hop into water.
Jeweled illumination, fiery gems for you, only for you..........2006-11-02
A beautiful gift from a friend brought this book to me for use in my 1st grade classroom and to lighten my teacher tired spirit. It's a book of poems with animal and color ,truly a bestiary....evoking the East and things exotic. I love the poetry not only for their insight into the animal but for their depth of understanding of nature and her grandeur. In fact for some reason they made me think of G. M. Hopkins poems.. Poetry for children should be as poetry is for an adult, rich with word, evocative, and never "easy". Here is one written for the Gold Finch,
"Clinging to a prickly thistle,
the gold finch flutters, whistles,
then flies away.
Some say
his song is only as long
as his tail feathers,
three gold notes,
that float."
The illustration that accompanies this verse is as elegant as the finch, which if you have had the pleasure of knowing golden finches you will relate so well to this delightful work. My grandmother had finches in her yard and many a summer I watched them...
The book has poems on frogs(my favorites), owls, donkeys, kitties, gulls, and more. I would definitely consider this as a fresh and wonderful present for child or classroom ....it has filled my cup with great inspiration tonight. Poems are word images, alone in their ability to connect us to feeling and experiences. Quite good work.

How I Live Now

Book Description
It only takes a few hours for Turner Buckminster to start hating Phippsburg, Maine. No one in town will let him forget that he's a minister's son, even if he doesn't act like one. But then he meets Lizzie Bright Griffin, a smart and sassy girl from a poor nearby island community founded by former slaves. Despite his father's-and the town's-disapproval of their friendship, Turner spends time with Lizzie, and it opens up a whole new world to him, filled with the mystery and wonder of Maine's rocky coast. The two soon discover that the town elders, along with Turner's father, want to force the people to leave Lizzie's island so that Phippsburg can start a lucrative tourist trade there. Turner gets caught up in a spiral of disasters that alter his life-but also lead him to new levels of acceptance and maturity. This sensitively written historical novel, based on the true story of a community's destruction, highlights a unique friendship during a time of change. Author's note.

A Young Adult Book with a Real World Ending.......2007-09-29
Mr. Schmidt has recreated the events surrounding the destruction of a black squatter's community on an island in Maine in the early 1900s with pathos. The Buckminster boy is white; Lizzie Bright, black. Their friendship is caught in the cross-hairs of a town bent on the erradication of the black community in their midst.
I felt that Mr. Schmidt was at his best in describing the life, land, and sea of Maine in the early 1900s as a boy would see them. The ending I found surprising, since, just like in the real world, the problems didn't have nice Hollywood endings.
I have one minor quibble - the secondary characters tended to be one dimensional - the white town folk were bad; the black squatters were good. Of course, a young teen might see the world so, and part of the delicious charm of the story at the end was that the Buckminster boy matured. He realized that some folks were not bad afterall, and, perhaps, could even be friends.
Reminded me of "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee.......2007-08-21
As an adult reader, this is one of the most touching novels I've read in months. It's a book that demands to be read aloud, for maximum impact, and someday I'd like to read this to my children.
The issues of death, prejudice, and the wonder of life are addressed well and simply. You can get the plot synopsis from other reviews, but this is one awesome novel that deserved the awards it won.
I'm not giving five because I am an adult reader, and the book was a bit on the simple side. I'd recommend it highly to/for kids, and parents might learn something too.
A strong beginning.......2007-06-22
This novel is a great beginning for class discussions of racism, bullying, studying classic literature, youth interaction with the elderly and community development issues.
The story is rich in the use of similes, metaphors and personification making it an excellent example of these methods of writing for instruction.
The many issues touched upon as the story unfolds are a rich resource for essays and enrichment studies.
REALLY GOOD THE SECOND TiME AROUND.........2007-06-01

best children's book .......2007-05-08
A wonderful book for the tweens.
It's up there with the very best. We read this for our inaugural Mother and Daughter Book Club meeting and are now spoilt.......it is very unlikely we will come upon another unknown (to us) children's novel that is this good. What a discovery!
The writing is perfectly suited to the older child. Huge concepts of growing up, death, love, racism, ecology and religion are all dealt with with grace and charm.
Partially true to historical fact, Schmidt transcends the everyday completely convincingly. A truly wonder-full novel.

Coutesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-01-18
Thirteen-year-old Turner Buckminster III is not happy. He has moved with his parents from Boston to Phippsburg, Maine, and everything that can be wrong is: The local kids play slow-pitch baseball, his stiff white shirts label him "the minister's kid," and his mother isn't kidding when she hands him the Sears, Roebuck catalog and points to the little building out behind the parsonage. And when Turner begins to question the choices that residents of the town--and his father--are making regarding the future of the inhabitants of nearby Malaga Island, Turner begins to fear that what he heard before leaving Boston may have been the truth: "Folks in Maine spoke a whole different language and didn't care for those who couldn't speak it themselves" (p. 2).
Schmidt sets this story in 1912, basing it on events which occurred in the Phippsburg/Malaga Island area on the coast of Maine. It starts a little slow, but readers who hang in through the first three chapters will find that he doesn't shy away from emotionally-charged issues such as racism, greed, and social posturing. However, Schmidt's focus is ultimately on the wisdom gained not only by young Turner, but by a surprising number of characters most readers will write off as "hopeless" early in the novel.
